@snailboat Thanks :D

7:49 AM
Hi @MattЭллен

How are you?

I'm fine. How are you?

Fine thanks.

are you a room owner?

7:55 AM
yes

Anyone recognize the definition of extension as "something that can be extended"?

no. to me it means something that extends something else

Jez
yeah me too
"something that can be extended"

hmmm. I suppose
that's a very narrow case

Jez
if you were building an extension on a house, you'd never call the house an extension
in what case does that work?

well, they're referring to to the bits that extend out from the table
sometimes they're hidden, sometimes they're extended
they are extensions in the sense that they extend the table
and they can be extended

Jez
10:28 AM
hmm
i'd still define that as "something that extends"

1 hour later…
11:35 AM
one week at number 1

12:27 PM
@Cerberus Hooray!
@MattЭллен Hooray!

:D thanks!

Have fun!

Mornin.

1:01 PM
hi, I'm looking for conferences, symposiums, congresses hypernym
any ideas besides event

Event is the hypernym, if you ask me.
@BraddSzonye Hah. I think it can be tough for Americans to get a handle on how big and diverse Europe is.

@RegDwighт It's harder the other direction. Something about a common language confuses people.

50 states vs. 50 countries, 3.8 million square miles vs 4 million, 300 million people vs. 700 million.
@MετάEd I have yet to meet a single European who thinks they speak Texan in New York.

1:16 PM
@RegDwighт Y'all are funny.

If anything it's the Brits who are extremely confused about Americans (mis)using "their" language.
But Brits are not Europeans, so.
And now for something completely different. Remember that nice trick how to know if you should use "its" or "it's"? Like, expand it and see if you mean "it is"? Well, I am happy to report people are now applying it!

A: Which term is correct — "Afghan" or "Afghani"?

WaheedAfghani is the currency while Afghan is called for the citizen of Afghanistan. It is plural form is Afghans.

> It is plural form is...

@RegDwighт s/confused/annoyed/ s/(mis)using/abusing/

Mission accomplished.
@MattЭллен I don't even have a word for what you just did to Her Majesty's tongue.

Well you're not British, so I wouldn't expect you to fully understand

Do show me one State Opening of Parliament that sports expressions such as "s/(mis)using/abusing/". No, make that three. Yes, show me three. Four would be nice.
my crystal ball predicts your answer:

@RegDwighт Sure they are.
They just won't admit it.

I've admited it. it's Reg who keeps denying it

My understanding is that they admit it at a hefty hourly rate. Brits are all about money.
@MattЭллен now. Listen. You get to bash the Germans. The frigging Germans, dude. That's some quality time right there. Us, we have to make do with bashing the Brits. That's like kicking a puppy. No fun.

@RegDwighт Am I not bashing a German?

Well my crystal ball's reception is not that strong. I can't see too clearly.

1:29 PM
lol

Move a bit to the left.

how's that?

Oh. You call that a German you're bashing? Oh my.
Serves us right for not sending some actual Germans your way.

I guess being technically correct is a German's favourite

Technically correct is the best kind of correct. They said that on the Internet, so that's like correct squared.

Is it common to say You will need to wash that dish out Or should we say You will need to wash that dish up?

hi
anybody here?
I need to just translate 1 sentence

Anonymous
@EinsteinsGrandson I am here! Though I suppose I'm not a translation service

ok
i mean
i don't understand the meaning
So a friend of mine has a psychological problems
I wrote to one therapist from Canada
if she can just email me her opinion
I'm in the Czech Republic
So this is the sentence

Anonymous
You asked a therapist over the internet to diagnose your friend who she's never met, and give the diagnosis to you?

Anonymous
Sorry, do continue!

2:33 PM
what's wrong with that?
in person

Anonymous
I'm just trying to see if I understand the situation

I know the therapist
oh OK
so this is it:
I’m sure it has helped this girl to have you to talk to. When I was in Prague, I met a female psychiatrist – I liked her very much and she is also a psychoanalyst (trained to understand the deeper layers of emotional pain). I know this woman is also a mother. Otherwise I do not know much about her but if your friend would like me to look into a referral and see how that works, I will see what I can find out.

@snailboat well we still don't know her reply. If she is any good, it would be "make an appointment, I take $9000 per hour".
Oh crap, I'm too slow.

So what does she mean by:
"if your friend would like me to look into a referral and see how that works, I will see what I can find out."
referral = the act of sending somebody who needs professional help to a person or place that can provide it
...that she would just send me a contact to that psychoanalyst , right?

Yes, if she can't contact your friend then she will tell you the details so that you can tell your friend

2:36 PM
Or that she would ask if the psychoanalyst want to see my friend... I sent a long story about the problems my friend has...

she will have already contacted the other therapist

I don't get it still
;o)

well, your therapist can't just send your friend along to the new therapist without telling the new therapist and making sure that referring your friend is OK
so your therapist will tell the new therapist about your firend and make sure the new therapist is able to treat your friend

and then tell you the details about the new therapist if the new therapist is able to help

2:39 PM
details?
like email, phone number?

address, phone number
yeah

optical illusions work on cats. good news.

ok, thank you then

Which for the sake of this room, I won't mention here.

cats are flying dinosaurs?

Uhh...

Polydactyly or polydactylism (from Greek (polys) "many" + δάκτυλος (daktylos) "finger"), also known as hyperdactyly, is a congenital physical anomaly in humans, dogs, and cats having supernumerary fingers or toes. Polydactyly is the opposite of oligodactyly (fewer fingers or toes). Presentation The extra digit is usually a small piece of soft tissue that can be removed. Occasionally it contains bone without joints; rarely it may be a complete, functioning digit. The extra digit is most common on the ulnar (little finger) side of the hand, less common on the radial (thumb) side, and...

you know, like them pterodactyls

Why do I have 10 new SE messages?

AIK vs Djurgården tonight, soccer game.
I think the idea is that there is one game on the field and one game on the streets.

You predict a riot?
Okay, I should have clicked first!
Yowza.

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 I'm not very interested in soccer but went with one of the teams supporters once.
Some kind of violence tourist thing.

Soccer is that popular in Sweden?

A somewhat disturbing thing with that trip is that I ended up in a group photo on the supporter clubs homepage. Was on the main page for a while, have not checked in a while.
@cyberskull It is the number 1 sport with no competition.

@JohanLarsson oh dear!

@cyberskull Soccer is a strange exception to the Scandinavian thing, we are famous for our ability to wait orderly in queues I think :D

intentional right?

@snailboat For example "data" and "information". Both of them are singular as well as plural :P

@snailboat Then you're a quick learner. I appreciate it when people listen and obey within a few minutes.
@Mistu4u I consider data to be plural, as various other people do, especially in a more formal context.
And information is exclusively singular, in that you never say information are.
Nor many information.

@Cerberus So why isn't there "information(s)"?

Anonymous
5:32 PM
@Mistu4u Because information changed.

Hello.
How do I properly punctuate this sentence: If you imagine a stale hot-dog bun with a smear of chocolate in the middle you would first, be accurately imagining a Bollycao, and second, be accurately imagining how terrible it tastes.

@JackBNimble Well, first and second are interjections, and therefore require commas on both sides.

I have a tendency to go a little comma crazy.

The opening clause (everything up to middle) requires a comma at its end.
@JackBNimble I, also, overpunctuate.

If you imagine a stale hot-dog bun with a smear of chocolate in the middle, you would first, be accurately imagining a Bollycao, and second, be accurately imagining how terrible it tastes.

The comma after Bollycao could, then, be safely removed, methinks.
