@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 OK, like I said, that's not how I read it.

@DavidWallace You are being way too nice to the rapist here. "Forced to spend the rest of his life married to someone he dislikes"? Who says he dislikes her? Anyway he is free to marry other women too. Lots of men in the bible had multiple wives. Kinda like this lady I know who has multiple dogs. When one dies she gets a new one.
@DavidWallace Read the whole thing, the first 5 books at least, and make note of every time a woman is mentioned. You'll see the picture emerge.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Why would he rape someone he likes?

@DavidWallace because he wants to put his penis inside her.

@kenny Howdy

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I have read the whole thing, thanks.

9:02 PM
But I have to get going. My wife, being an autonomous person who is not obedient to me, is working late, so I must be off to pick up the kids.
@DavidWallace Yeah but you should read it again.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 doesn't seem like "like" to me.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 ReligiousTolerance.org did a very good job of collating the passages from which we can see the status of women in the OT.

@MετάEd As an example, Jephthah's daughter. Her own name is never given. (Read the comments on that post for some insightful remarks and some stunning poetry.)

@TRiG The translation of that story is controversial.

@MετάEd Of course. Because Christians don't like tragic heroes, and can't accept that Jephthah is one.

@TRiG It's controversial because the meaning is actually in doubt.
And, yes, that story has created some amazing, poignant art of many kinds.

Dammit. I killed the room again.

@MετάEd Well, if you are bored, you might go through the delete queue and the close queue.
In re this morning’s doughnut convo:

@Carlo_R. I am now. Did you have a question for me?
actually just ping me with your question and I (or anybody else) can get back to it later.
Later!

It's a bit disappointing that the conversation about the Bible's opinion of women had no female participants. I never thought it was against women, but either way, unfortunately it can be and has been misused by unscrupulous people.

Well, any religious text can be interpreted in over 9000 ways!

user19161
Also, we would not know the motivation of the people who put these texts together long ago.

user19161
Actually, the same things apply to non-religious texts too.

That particular subject touches a confusing and sore spot for me.

Well, you know the atmosphere of this room by now.

I was never officially taught that women are inferior, but I think I picked something up along the lines.
I see the atmosphere, but I'm never here when the conversations are going on.
