@GraceNote Of course, 2012 is just a movie. :)

@JasperLoy well, I microwaved some pasta, boiled some veg and heated up some garlic bread. It was tasty :)

@JasperLoy I don't much care for the movie. The prediction predated the movie for quite some time, after all.

Q: Is it "front-end", "frontend", or "front end"?

Mike M. Lin Possible Duplicate: When to use a hyphen in writing a compound word Which is correct? front-end engineering frontend engineering front end engineering I looked over http://www.grammarbook.com/punctuation/hyphens.asp, referenced in this answer, and I'm still not sure which to use. ...

Guy did more research, but it still looks like a dupe

@simchona I think it's flattering that the site is being treated like it represents a substantial authority on the language that we have a final say. That should feel good.

@z7sg If you say so! I still find it suspicious that he should have stumbled upon so many bad wives...
He was probably more like DSK...

Kit
7:04 PM
@simchona I think he's made a good case for his confusion and how it is not covered by the other answer. I voted to reopen.

@simchona Hrrm... uh... maybe it's just me, but perhaps the dupe target could use some more... content... in its answers.

I actually don't like the duped question because all the answers are just links. So I'm offering a bounty on the master hyphen question—if any of you are interested, a comprehensive answer which won't suffer from linkrot because all the info is in the text, there's 300 rep just sitting there.

They are "Check these out" and "Check these out but they're not good because it changes", which... yeah...

Got it

Kit
@waiwai933 Wow, way to throw down the gauntlet.
If only I didn't have this project to launch.

7:07 PM
If only I had a brain /scarecrowed

Kit
@MattEllen It's not your fault your blond. ;-)

@Kit my blond indeed!

Kit
@MattEllen Frig. That's too funny.

@Cerberus DSK was innocent! Sort of. Well I'm sure he's guilty of a few things just not the actual thing he was accused of.

Kit
@MattEllen Or should I say "that's to funny"?

7:09 PM
@z7sg Exactly... not a nice guy to work under as a woman.

Kit
@z7sg What? Who?

Or be married to, unless you are his current wife, with her eccentric views on monogamy.

@Kit as sugar is to sweet? I might not have a brain, but my beard is somewhat ginger, so my chin is smart!

user19161
@Cerberus Have you heard of polyamorous?

@JasperLoy — The dude has three heads. Take a wild guess.

7:11 PM
@Cerberus It's terrible, how can she put up with such behaviour?

@Kit DSK - The French man who allegedly raped and imprisoned a maid in a hotel

@MattEllen Is this a recent story or an older one?

Dominique Gaston André Strauss-Kahn (; born 25 April 1949), often referred to in the media as DSK, is a French economist, lawyer, and politician, and a member of the French Socialist Party. Strauss-Kahn became the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on 28 September 2007, with the backing of his country's president, Nicolas Sarkozy, and served in that role until his resignation on 18 May 2011. He is a professor of economics at the Paris Institute for Political Studies ("Sciences Po"). Strauss-Kahn was Minister of Economy and Finance from 1997 to 1999 as part of Lio...

@MattEllen Yes, that guy.

Kit
@MattEllen Oh. Names elude me, but that guy I remember.

7:13 PM
@GraceNote the only one I am aware of, but haven't been keeping abreast of

@MattEllen I read that it was attempted, not alleged
Which is what threw me off a moment.

Kit
@z7sg Maybe she endorses it. You never know.

@GraceNote ah! then that's what I meant. @DSK please don't sue me!

@MattEllen I'm the one making sure the facts I know are straight.

@Kit She endorses sexual harassment? Mmmm okay.

7:15 PM
Also, I've been running into too many polyamory discussions as of late.

Kit
@z7sg Look, if Paul Bernardo had a girlfriend who was into helping him kidnap, rape, and kill teenage girls, it's possible that DSK's wife is into her husband harassing maids. Just sayin'.

@Kit There are some weird people in the owlrd
yeah
it's where the owls come from

user19161
@cerberus I must admit I was a bit shocked yesterday to discover your age. I thought you were an old man, like @robusto.

user19161
But Robusto seems pretty young at heart so he might be faking it.

user19161
At least that's what I think when I try to peer into his soul, like he peered into yours.

7:18 PM
@JasperLoy But the way she speaks of it... "a man of power should have mistresses". Somehow I like balanced relationships, though I have no absolute proof that they make people happiest.

@MattEllen Someone summoned me?

@Kit Well that is what I am saying, if she sticks by him then she must be into it. I disapprove of that too.

@RegDwight I need you opinion on people from owlrd

@RegDwight The question is, hoo?

@JasperLoy Haha, why did I seem old? And Rob doesn't seem old to me in any way. In fact I forgot his age the moment I heard it. I don't care about ages at all.

7:19 PM
My opinion is yes.

thanks!

Kit
@RegDwight Funny, I thought for sure you would say "fish."

Brb suppering the hell out of those eats.

user19161
@Cerberus Maybe because I subconsciously associated your age with Alain's who is always chatting with you and Robusto.

@Cerberus You actually kind of have a wise-elderly-fellow aura about you, if I had to describe it.
(All due respect intended and I do know you are not that old, but you radiate a much older aura than others in here do. Somehow)

7:22 PM
@JasperLoy Oh, how old he Alain? I actually have no idea.

user19161
@Cerberus His baby photo had to be black and white, not colour, which he showed us yesterday I think.

@GraceNote Haha, well, that is interesting. Do point out the lines that confer this aura upon me.
@JasperLoy I think that is his baby, not he himself!

@GraceNote I must give off a really young aura. I got asked how old I was before being sold a ticket for X-Men first class

user19161
@Cerberus You mean the black and white one?

@GraceNote Huhuh, you said "radiate", huhuh.

user19161
7:26 PM
@MattEllen What was the age limit to watch it there?

@Cerberus I think you just have an older feeling style of word choice. You speak with someone as if you have worldly experience, like someone who is well seasoned.

@JasperLoy I... don't remember.

@JasperLoy 12

No specific lines to draw from, just that's the impression I got. That said, I got introduced to you not long after someone pointed out your actual age.

I suppose I am a bit old fashioned. It is no wonder that you should be able to see this in my choice of words.

7:27 PM
@MattEllen Not really. I mean, in your case, you might look much younger than you are. Which is something you should embrace and I'll really hurt you if you don't.

I have no idea why I was asked. I have a rad beard. I can't be under 12.

user19161
@MattEllen I think there's something wrong with that guy's judgement then. I once bought a vcd for 16 when I was 24, and the person asked me to show my ID too.

@Cerberus Not a bad thing. I'm old fashioned, too, though that's decidedly more my taste in fashion than my language.

Another reason is that it is easier to use well-established phrases and stricter rules: I might make more mistakes if I didn't.
@GraceNote Just fashion? Not architecture, furniture, etiquette, or language?

@Cerberus Fashion's just the one I look at most. I like the architecture and etiquette. Modern furniture tends to be more comfortable. I am bad enough at modern language that I shudder to think how I'd fare with the language.

7:29 PM
@GraceNote Yeah, I think it's genetic. My parents look relatively young too

user19161
@cerberus You are right that age does not mean much. I find many people becoming less wise as they age cos they seem to learn all the wrong things from this wrong world, but that's just my philosophical viewpoint!

@MattEllen My mother's youthful appearance has successfully shattered all of my capability to tell a woman's age.

@GraceNote Haha, I see.

@GraceNote I've been practising - I look at various body parts and find an average.

@JasperLoy Hmm... I don't know, that is very complicated.

7:32 PM
I'm pretty sure my own age should be easy enough to tell.

I haven't a clue.

user19161
@GraceNote Shall we play the guessing game?

I could guess, but Cerberus doesn't like being brute forced

Yes, you guys do it. I couldn't, I am too bad at that.

@JasperLoy Shouldn't take that much. You've even got a margin of error since it's near my birthday so I'll accept being off by one in the right direction.

7:34 PM
@MattEllen Didn't I qualify it, as in "in that way"?

user19161
@GraceNote Seriously I have no idea. I don't even know your real sex. :)

@JasperLoy That's because my sex is even less relevant than my age.

@Cerberus I can't see the quote now, but probably. So we're both right! :D

18 hours ago, by Cerberus
Hey you're not supposed to brute force me.
(Inexplicably, I have a bigger window. This does not happen often)

user19161
@GraceNote True but I must add that sex does have a role to play as well, eg, teen girls mature faster and stuff like that.

7:36 PM
I guess I haven't been around long enough for anyone to get a read on my age, but I've always felt that I'm pretty transparent like an open book, for the most part.

I've moved the chat onto my 1024x768 monitor in an effort to encourage me to do some (hobby) programming. I hasn't worked.

The only thing that's difficult to discern is my tastes, and that's because of being eclectic to a fault.

Kit
@JasperLoy I disagree that sex has a role to play.
Unless you're talking about role-playing sex.

@Kit +1

@GraceNote Sorry to rain on your parade, but your tastes are trivially easy to figure out. You like a) rocks, b) living under them. Everything else follows. Hope that helps!

7:38 PM
Kit read me spot on

user19161
@Kit Yes we can save that for another room. :)

Kit
@GraceNote Did I?

@RegDwight I don't really have taste for rocks, actually.

Kit
@JasperLoy Or dungeon, as it were.

@Kit At least range-wise, aye

7:39 PM
@GraceNote It's an acquired taste.

(Or living under them, for that matter, it's very much a disadvantage)

Kit
@RegDwight Mmm, brimstone.

@GraceNote Lies! From what I know of the world, it is a much better place down here.

Kit
@GraceNote Well, you like gaming, so it can't be that hard.

Hákarl or kæstur hákarl () (Icelandic for "fermented shark") is a food from Iceland. It is a Greenland or basking shark which has been cured with a particular fermentation process and hung to dry for four to five months. Hákarl is an acquired taste and has a very particular ammonia-rich smell and fishy taste, similar to very strong cheese slathered in ammonia. Hákarl is served as part of a þorramatur, a selection of traditional Icelandic food served at þorrablót in midwinter. Hákarl is, however, readily available in Icelandic stores all year round and is eaten in all seasons. Consumpt...

7:40 PM
@RegDwight That's where Kaestur got his name!

Casu marzu (also called casu modde, casu cundhídu in Sardinian language, or in Italian formaggio marcio, "rotten cheese") is a traditional Sardinian sheep milk cheese, notable for being riddled with live insect larvae. It is found mainly in Sardinia, Italy. Derived from Pecorino, casu marzu goes beyond typical fermentation to a stage most would consider decomposition, brought about by the digestive action of the larvae of the cheese fly Piophila casei. These larvae are deliberately introduced to the cheese, promoting an advanced level of fermentation and breaking down of the cheese's fats...

user19161
@Kit I disagree, all sexes and ages can like gaming.

is this what you're eating @RegDwight?

No.

@Kit That's honestly about as revelationary as "liking reading" is, in this day and age.

7:41 PM
I can't even stand olives. Another acquired taste.

Kit
@GraceNote Well, that speaks to your age.

(Also, my mother was a gamer with record scores on Arcade machines. It's in my blood ♪)

Kit
Also, you collect things. Maybe unicorns or snowglobes.
Can't see quite which.

@RegDwight I felt the same, then I had a fresh olive. It tasted like overly salted raw pea. I still don't think they're great,but I don't hate them.

user19161
OK I shall start the guess game then. Are you married @grace?

7:42 PM
@Kit Neither. I'm not a fan of fleshy horses and I'm always afraid that if I had snowglobes they'd fall off the shelf and break.

Kit
@MattEllen You've got to have them straight off the tree.
@GraceNote Hello Kitty?

de-lurks Hi all!

@Kit I'll take your word. there aren't any olive trees near me.
hi @psmears!

Kit
@MattEllen Me neither.

@Kit I am a cat person and do have a variety of cute-cat items including an addressbook and a cellphone holder, but not Hello Kitty as it were.

user19161
7:43 PM
Hi @psm You have been very quiet the past few days!

Kit
@psmears Your cloaking device has malfunctioned!
@GraceNote Hmm. This is more fun than guessing your age.
@GraceNote Are you a smoker?

@JasperLoy Indeed, I have been keeping a low profile cos all the, erm, stuff that was happening was getting to me somewhat...

I'm pretty sure this room just invented chat-based speed dating

user19161
@psmears I didn't know you were so sensitive, for your age...

@Kit Related to some. I don't think I'll pick up the trade and my brother is allergic, so that's even less reason.

Kit
7:46 PM
@MichaelMrozek Who? Where? What now?

Has anything much happened in the last couple of days? I have looked at meta.english, but that's about all... certainly haven't been looking at chat (didn't even realise my other computer was logged in for some of the time!)

@MichaelMrozek you ever used IRC? simliar to this, only a lot seedier

@MattEllen Maybe in the rooms you hang out in :)

@JasperLoy Less about my age, thank you very much :-p

My rooms are mostly about Linux and how much we <3 our computers

7:47 PM
@MichaelMrozek :P I ain't saying nothing

Kit
I just caught a very hard to spot error in my code completely by accident. phew

score!

Kit
Now I feel I should buy a lottery ticket.

user19161
@MichaelMrozek I still can't figure out how to print on my linux!

I love it when that happens

7:48 PM
@JasperLoy Good news! ^_^

@Kit Nicely done!

user19161
@MichaelMrozek And we aren't doing speed dating here, you're too sensitive!

@JasperLoy — Do you really want to get into it with me?

@JasperLoy It's a series of people asking @GraceNote personal questions; that's pretty much exactly how speed dating works

user19161
@Robusto Into what?

7:50 PM
@psmears I feel exactly the same.

Kit
@MichaelMrozek Oh. I thought it was just me. Although if she's interested...
But if he's interested, then no.

@JasperLoy — I have to tell you how to use the arrow now too?

@PSM: Have you written any new answers of late? I haven't, and even Rob has retired...

@MichaelMrozek I don't mind.

@GraceNote Oh, neither do the speed daters, I just thought the parallel was amusing

user19161
7:52 PM
@Robusto I'm sorry I don't get you. Would you care to explain, or did I offend you in some way unknowingly? I'm sorry if I did.

@JasperLoy — Well, if your skills with link references aren't up to it, or your memory is failing ...

@Cerberus No, I have done essentially nothing on the "real" (non-meta) site since everything kicked off. Partly because I felt any time I had was better spent trying to help out on meta but partly because the previous few days just weren't much fun.

Take it easy Jasper. He's messin withya.

@Cerberus BTW how was France?

Also,
2 days ago, by RegDwight
Hear that, @Cerberus? Amsterdam << cosmopolitan US.
2 days ago, by nohat
... although now that I think about it, in my recent trip to Amsterdam, there was a lot of really crappy wine in the grocery stores, so maybe my experience is more typical of cosmopolitan United States living

7:57 PM
@JasperLoy — News flash: if you at-mention someone it shows up in the main site's in box. Red alert, even.
