6:00 PM
@MrHen Very nice.

@Cerberus I don't actually remember my rating

@Cerberus If you do, note that this is one of those rare cases where the EMP is not just for emergencies. I usually use it fairly early, to get rid of his Chimera and Neocyte Guard, which otherwise kill too many of my cards through Counter.

And I haven't played with any of the robots or pirates

@RegDwight Yeah I have used EMP early as well, depending on how things went. But I keep losing!
I think I should toss Havoc.

Okay, I just checked. I am SR20.
But lunch over; g2g

6:04 PM
@Cerberus Yeah, that one is pretty useless. I never actually use it. At most, I try it out for fun, when the rest of the deck is überstrong and I only need 8-9 cards to win.

Bai @Mrhen!

CU!

Huh?
Havoc, really?

Ah.

6:05 PM
No wait.
Nonono.
I mean the chaos wave.
Sry!

Oh.
That one is tricky.

Well hm. I don't think I even have this one.
But from the looks of it, does it even survive long enough?

(Notice the "3x" muwaha.)
It has 3 leech.

Oh.
Yeah, but 2 wait.

But yeah the BT cards are much better in this type of deck.

6:06 PM
That's my point.

Yeah, that too, the wait.

Is this still EL&U?
What goes on here?

So what about this:
The plane strikes all Raider 2...
@Kosmonaut We apologize. But this game is rather fun and challenging.
Look at how I suck at this! You are winning this war on your own.

@Kosmonaut The dog and pony rat are blathering on about some computer game or other.

@Martha Join us!

6:10 PM
@Cerberus (1) I have to do this little thing called "work", and (2) I don't like collectible card games. Or fighting games, really. Word games and puzzles for me, thank you.

No need to make up reasons, just say Wordsplay and leave it at that.
And why the heck am I a pony?

Hehe.

@Cerberus My main worries right now are actually about my defense deck.
I have no idea how it's faring.

Kit
Anyone want to give me personal advice?

I often switch defense decks mid-term, but it's hard to judge if it has any effect.

6:15 PM
@Kit: Bring it on!
@RegDwight ... you worry about that; I'll worry about winning a single time. I can't do it.

@Cerberus Well, if they wake up and attack, my advantage is nil unless I have a good defense deck.

Kit
My mother-in-law is a wonderful woman. She's with a guy who is deteriorating physically and mentally even as you look at him. I think their relationship is turning abusive. What can I do?

Oh my.

Kit
Well. It's Friday. I have to lighten the mood somehow.

Okay, a difficult problem. How well do you know her?

Kit
6:18 PM
It just cropped up because I have to leave early to pick up the boys because he's being a dick.
@Cerberus Very well. She's like my own mother, only better because she's not my mother.

And by abusive, you mean he shouts/curses at her?
Or physical abuse?

Kit
@Cerberus Yes, yelling and put downs. I don't think she'd hold with physical abuse.
So probably not that.

Have you talked to her about it? Has your husband?

Kit
We're neither of us sure what to say.
Or relationship with him has never been particularly positive.
But we didn't want to make it hard on her by bringing up the fact that he's a dick.

It is a bit difficult to judge because I am not there to observe exactly how bad it is... what kind of things does he say? How does she react?
Oh, and how long have they been together?

Kit
6:21 PM
@Cerberus Long time. Twenty years or so, I think. Not married.

OK.

Kit
Hard to describe the interactions. More than just griping or snapping.

Hoe does she react?
Bites back? Keeps silent?

Kit
She's upset by it, but I can't believe the extent to which she excuses his behavior.

How long has the abuse been this bad?

Kit
6:23 PM
I get a lot of "Well, he's had a stroke, so..." and stuff like that.
Maybe a year or so.

(Sorry about all these questions, but I need data to judge...)

Kit
I feel like if I had a solution, that would be useful, but I don't. It's a complicated situation.

Is it affecting her happiness, you think?
Or her physical well-being, even?

Kit
It's true that he's had lots of health issues, but where do you draw the line? I mean, it's like saying "Cerberus just tore my arm off because he's in pain. He didn't mean it."
Yes, her happiness. Physical well-being, I don't think so.
I probably shouldn't even have put it out there. But it's bugging me just now.

No, why not ask for advice from strangers?

Kit
6:28 PM
I think I might just check in with my company's EAP on Monday. I bet they would have some good advice.

Yeah do that (what is EAP?).

Kit
@Cerberus I always raise a questioning eyebrow when people unload private information in public. I should probably hold myself to the same standard.
@Cerberus Employee Assistance Program.

Even if it's not physical abuse, it sounds like you're worried for her and she may not be telling you how bad it is.

Kit
@aedia Thanks. I'm sure she's having a lot of difficulty recognizing and accepting that his behavior has changed. I'm having a hard time thinking of the phrase abusive relationship with respect to her as well.

6:31 PM
My advice would be: call her, say you'd like to talk to her, make an appointment. Then say you hope she won't be offended with your meddling with her private affairs. Then say that you've noticed "Tom" seems to be going through a difficult time of late. Ask how she feels about that, how she is coping. Then, depending on what she says, gently suggest that you have noticed a "change" in his behaviour toward her and that he has been nasty to her. If she tries to talk it down, say you were there...

Kit
Truth of the matter is, the man is brain-damaged.

...and it really didn't seem healthy, to you, as an outsider.

Kit
Yeah, my husband and I are having her over for dinner tonight. We plan to strategize with or without her.

I'm not sure two v. one would be the best setting?

Kit
strategize <- is that a word? (semantic satiation)

6:32 PM
One on one usually makes people most open and least defensive...
Strategize... to be honest, I didn't quite understand what you meant by it, hehe.

Kit
@Cerberus I understand that concern, but we have a really close bond. I think it will be ok. If not, I'll find some time with her alone soon.
Maybe shopping on Sunday.
So what would you do with a person who you love who is not the person who you love? And probably never will be again, especially if they have gone sour?

It depends.

Kit
@Cerberus Assisted suicide is not legal in my state. ☺

If this person is damaging your mental health too much, you must let go eventually. Otherwise, I have no answer.
By "let go" I meant "walk away".

Kit
I know, I got it. I was joking. I don't think she'll do that though.
He's too old and close to death already.
I think she'd feel guilty for "abandoning" him now.

6:37 PM
They live together?

Kit
Yes.

If only she could get a little bit of distance from him...
How old are they?

Kit
Hmm. Late sixities. I think he's almost seventy.

Does he need physical care?
I mean, what if she simply moved out but kept seeing him?
And have they tried some kind of therapy? Couples therapy, or perhaps therapy just for him?

Kit
@Cerberus No, it's her house. And he has no means to support himself because he's made poor financial decisions his entire life (which is why we have never much liked him).
@Cerberus He would not go for that, I am certain. Everyone else has a problem, not him.

6:40 PM
Having home assistance for medical care can also really help reduce the burden and isolation for someone who's having to become a caregiver.

Could he survive by himself if she rented a small appartment for him? Or couldn't she afford that?
@Kit She could warn him that she can't deal with him this way, so he must choose between therapy or leaving?

Kit
@aedia Well, I agree, but she doesn't really care for him physically. She does however, care for her mother as well, and has in home assistance for that.

@Kit Hmm. Perhaps you can talk to his doctor?
Like, if he does at least have regular checkups for medical issues, perhaps you or MIL can talk to them about his mental state?

Kit
@aedia That is a very good idea. I think I might suggest that to her.

I like it too.

Kit
6:43 PM
And I think I might see if I can find an eldercare support group that she might want to go to.

But are doctors allowed to discuss those things, with their professional privacy and all? (I don't know.)

Someone has to tell the doctor he's going nuts. They won't see him long enough in those 5 minute appointments to notice for years, but if they know to look, they can help you convince him he needs further checkups and support.

Right, telling the doctor would be a good idea in any case.

Kit
I think I have to convince her that her relationship with him = eldercare.
And since he won't talk to a therapist, a doctor might be a helpful outsider who could intervene.
This poor woman is still trying to adjust to the notion that her mother is in the early stages of dementia.
Now I've got to point her toward the same thing with her partner.
Barf.

@Kit Oh, man. That's hard.

6:46 PM
Those things are the worst things in life.
One thing I've learnt, though, is that a protracted divorce is extremely damaging and generally bad, very bad.

All my older relatives have lost their minds in their late years. It's really difficult. I'm not looking forward to it.

Kit
She's a genuine and intelligent person. She has some good sources of emotional support. I think she can weather it.

Yeah it sucks, I have seen it happen to some relatives as well.

Kit
@Cerberus They're not married though, so she could just give him the boot.

@Kit Thank goodness.

6:48 PM
@Cerberus Yours? I'm sorry.

@aedia Yeah... but they were two generations older than I was, so that isn't as shocking as seeing it happening to your own parents.

Kit
And on that cheery note, I'm off to see my boys who are the very foundation of happiness in my world.

My friend(28)'s father(65) has had to abandon his doctor's practice because patients complained that he was going ga-ga... not pretty.

@Kit YAY!

Kit
Thanks for the ears. And the advice.

6:51 PM
@Kit Haha ok, I'm sure everything will be better eventually!

Kit
Sorry to drag the mood down so much. Enjoy the weekend!

@Kit Have a rainbow-filled weekend and good luck.

Kit
Thanks! Tchuß!

No it was interesting!
Bye!
Oh I need to go get groceries and books from the library...
Later!

@Cerberus One mouth free to drink a beer! Or do you need two bags of groceries? Or two books? :)
@Cerberus Adios!

6:57 PM
Bye all who's out.

7:22 PM
@Reg: I just played on auto by accident, and I easily beat our enemy. Odd.

@Cerberus Harharhar.
Das Problem sitzt vor dem Computer.

Bwah!

Lol.

Incidentally, could it be that those Hatchets of yours are so good because they dodge the Dozer Abomination?

Well, it certainly doesn't hurt that they dodge. Quite literally.

7:31 PM
Indeed.
And my poor Vampires are being dodged upon by those evil Exodrones and Nimbi.

That's why I have those flying units in the first place.
Other than that they are inferior to 4-health leech units.

Oh, but my recent addition of some cards with higher hp seems to have helped: Draco Queen and some 7-hp BT card (3 speed) will survive the evil action cards.

I have no idea where my draco queen is.
I sure as hell have seen one.
Perhaps in the rewards section, where it was too expensive, so I just left it there?..

Aww.
I think I got it from a mission?
BT, flying, rally, leech.
Isn't it in your other deck?
Well, it's not as if I should be advising you...
Dammit, got defeated again.

Guys, how far are you? I can't be bothered to read above.

7:36 PM
It's actually his action cards that kill me, oh, besides the Dozer.
We are still way ahead of our enemy, thanks to Reg.

For once.

Is MrD actually asking about the game?

I just presumed.

7:38 PM
@Cerberus That's another advantage of Surge: he usually wastes his first action card for nothing.
He plays it right away, without any effect, and then I'm basically playing white, and with a one-card advantage at that.

I'm just 'bouta get barbaric in some Arctis raid.

"Usually"?
@MrDisappointment Oh! You are playing too! Great.
@RegDwight As far as I can see, card order is completely random? Yes, if he pays an action card first, I win.

But I'm just proceeding with the missions right now, I take it you guys have done this stuff and are participating in co-op arenas, or something?

Hold on a sec. Are you in a faction yet, @MrDisappointment?

We are in a faction.
We will save a space for you!

7:41 PM
Nah, literally just been playing for 30 minutes or so.

If our Führer allows it.
Wait..
I'm not sure it would be a good idea to join the faction just now.

Well, sure, but he'll be added to the queue, and I can approve later.

Ah! Yes.

I mean, we're running out of places!

7:42 PM
I didn't know it worked like that.

We need to get to level 4 real quick!

@Reg That link just initialises the game to my dashboard.

Yeah, with the endless throngs of applicants...
@MrDisappointment Just wait till it loads...

Ahhh
It registered the application automatically

Perhaps we should give that developer the boot, the one who has only 9 Colossi? I mean, sure, he has a 99.8 % win rate and has designed the game, but... he's just not as hot as the other girls/boys waiting in line.

7:44 PM
Yup, I can see you. Level 4.

Yay!

When will he get decent cards? Level 10? 15?
BTW, this is one feature that is totally missing: trading cards with one another.

That is generally not allowed in these games, because it can be abused...

Tell me something, do you ever lose cards? I mean, I've always won and presume I didn't permanently lose any cards that 'died', but maybe I'll lose this raid: will I lose cards?

Besides, it will be one less reason to buy cards with real money.
@MrDisappointment Never!
You don't even lose game honour, though your real honour... well...

7:48 PM
@MrDisappointment You can sell cards, though. For like 10 gold. It's a shame. But still better than nothing.

Wow. What happens when I actually lose? I hate losing. Gives me the feeling that the universe is about to suddenly contract back into the density of this period, right here -> .

Losing? Nothing happens at all: you've merely wasted energy.
In a faction war, on the other hand, the enemy gains points if you lose.
Hmm it's nearly ten: perhaps I should make dinner.
Later!

CU!

Aye!

OT @Reg Re your starred comment...

7:50 PM
Um, which one? I have so many!

Aristotle said 'All paid jobs absorb and degrade the mind', or something like that. I'm sure that, should he have had the opportunity, he would have been a proponent of the internet saying something along the lines of 'But the internet is cornerstone for the future of all comprehension!'
Um, sorry, I know you're a starred-comment god. Your last one.

Well, that reminds me of that essay of Joel's.
It's not about salary as such, mind you.
But the point is not unsimilar.
You're best at what you do for fun.

Interesting. Yes. Sure I've skimmed through this before.
Man, this bitch is kicking my ass!

Hey, Cerberus is out. And he's a male.

AFAWK.
I need to rethink my deck.

7:59 PM
Happens all the time.

Ack.
I just hate, hate that stooped Dozer.

You teliin me.
Just surrendered two times in a row.
Oh, and that stupid raid takes forever to take off.
7/50, 20h left, only 10% done.
I'm on it, but I can't do everything myself!
I even put my Swarm on hold to participate in this Xeno Walker.

8:15 PM
Are you guys still prattling on about that stupid game? Sheesh.

@Martha It makes me confused about which things are words. Like I was able to comprehend anything before, but still.

@Martha Okay, okay. I'm out. I'll even post a baby picture myself.

Laterz @Cerb. Gotta go play some console games with family.

(Speaking of niece, she has reportedly utterly refused to take a nap today. At all. She's been up since oh-my-god-o'clock without a wink of sleep. Let's just say, her mommy is really cranky.)

8:33 PM
@Martha She looks so wide awake and peppy! I'm sure it's just more fun to be awake.
I certainly didn't value sleep one iota until college, when it became a precious resource.
My parents must have hated my childhood, now that I think of it.

@aedia Apparently. Problem is, when she's this tired, she forgets half the skills she's learned. E.g. going down the step from the kitchen to the family room. Hence, thud -> bawling -> even more frazzled mom.

@Martha Aw. Poor lil' thing. Happens to me too. Well, not the stairs, but the forgetting. Just last night I stayed up too late, forgot how to use the Windows command line properly and overwrote my java executable with nothing by accident. Then the installer wouldn't fix it for me because the old version wasn't there. It was sad. I was sad. I should have gone to bed before that happened.
That is a true story, by the way. I am not making up my stupidity.

@aedia Yeah, that's the "no sewing after midnight/no cutting after 9:00 p.m." rule.
And if the fabric was very expensive, the cutting deadline is even earlier. Because there are just some things you can't undo.

@Martha Oh man, yes. I need to make a sign that says that. A plaque, prominently displayed.
I think maybe just "Have you checked your caffeine levels?" would do. I'm not to be trusted before my morning coffee, either.
No Crafting Without Caffeine
There we go. If I don't have a coffee or tea near me, it's probably not the right time of day to be doing anything serious.
