Hey, what are you guys talkin' about?

@Reg: FF was only about 900 MB this time.
@Kos: No freakin' clue.
Now I have only 1.2 GB in use, yay.
My FF has only 84 open tabs by the way.

@Kosmonaut Scroll back a little.

Didn't say articles are simple, just well-defined. (If you could substitute "one", use "a". Otherwise, use "the".)

I see it

Do Chrome users exist who keep lots of tabs open?

@Cerberus I'm typing this in Chrome.

8:03 PM
@Cerberus As opposed to doing what?

If you say "yeah I have like 12 open", you disprove your own statement.
@Kos: I like your attitude.
So I am assuming you guys keep 50 or 100 tabs open on a regular basis too?

I usually don't have more than 6 or 7 tabs open in Chrome. But I have pretty much every site of the network open in Opera at any given time.

Okay, so how many tabs in Opera?
And why not in Chrome?

Because I use Opera. Chrome is strictly for ELU chat.

I usually have so many tabs and windows open in Chrome.

8:05 PM
@Kos: And does Chrome slow down / hog memory if you keep 50+ tabs open for a day?
By hogging I mean 500MB+ , I think.

It seems to do alright. Depends if there is any Flash.

Ah.
Well there are bound to be some flash sites too?

Yes, it can easily get 500MB+ on average when I have tons of stuff open.

I am trying to find out whether FF is truly worse at handling lots of tabs, or Chrome users just leave much fewer tabs open and use fewer extensions than the average FF user.

My wife uses FF, and she hates bookmarks, her concept of a bookmark is a tab. So she has like 20 tabs open all the time, and it literally takes minutes for the browser to fire up, and most importantly, just as much to completely die after being closed.

8:08 PM
Firefox does seem to go slower for me as well.

@Reg: Okay but that is rather strange. Normally FF can take 20 tabs easily, and minutes is longer than I ever see.

The most tabs I ever have open is maybe a dozen, and Firefox can take forever to open or close.

Really? Whenever I try FF with a dozen tabs and a few extensions, it is as fast as vanilla Chrome.
I have never tried extensions or many tabs on Chrome.

I use FF at work, and I have to re-start it every few hours or so, because it literally grinds to a halt, usually with just a few tabs open.

Really?
Weird, I have never seen that, except on older PCs...

8:11 PM
Yes. And I have a fast PC, believe me.

Analysing this problem seems to be rather problematic.
Hey, hey, don't worry, I believe you!

@RegDwight WE GET IT, YOU HAVE A FAST COMPUTER

YEAH
But how fast?

fast.

Fast, or REALLY fast?
How many REALLYs?
3? 4? 4.5?

8:13 PM
Can you reword the joke somewhat? I still don't get it.

10 bushels of fastitude.

Thank you.

Fastitude... that sounds like fasting.
Not my idea of fun.

fastitude (n.) — The attitude required to successfully carry out a fasting regimen.

@Kosmonaut We actually measure the performance in how little ass it sucks to analyze flight control software and work with control flow graphs with 40,000+ subgraphs.

8:14 PM
I've actually switched my online radio listening to Chrome, because Firefox would leak memory like crazy when streaming anything.

@RegDwight — Wow, you're like all feisty today.

@RegDwight Exactly. That's 10 bushels worth.
See how much easier this is than the metric system?

You have a point...

@Kosmonaut Little ass is not metric. And 10 bushels worth corresponds to how little ass, exactly? Could you be less precise with your imperial-march nonsense?

@Martha: for me, FF is always leaking memory unless I'm not doing anything on it. I will test how it fares when I'm streaming music but not browsing at all.
March?
Oh.

8:18 PM
Yes, a popular month by John Williams.

Eh.
(Fact: last year a girl was born here called Eh.)

@Robusto I'm not feisty. I went all in and won, so where's my monies?
@Cerberus Fact: some people call their children Rocket or Sputnik.

Afk.

8:42 PM
Aflak.
?
That was weird.

What drugs are you having with your bagles now?

I wrote a message and it appeared in your dialog box.
Then I refreshed and it was fixed.

Okay, lemme repeat: what drugs, exactly?

I like to have lox with my bagels. It is basically the best thing ever.
When done properly.

Thank you. Duly notying.

8:45 PM

That is so not original.

Heh. Wikipedia has a whole blurb about the inaccuracies in Cromwell.
I can quote unrelated stuff, too.
But I see that them loxen are strong drug.

If I knew that I would definitely be having a lox bagel on Friday, I would be thinking about it all week.
When I order, sometimes they say, "do you want the lox cream cheese, or the lox slices?"
I am like, SLICES, ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

WTH is lox cream cheese? It don't come in tubes, mehopes?

8:53 PM
It is cream cheese with little bits of lox in it.
I have never had it.

Now that is just wasting perfectly fine lox.

I know!

Like having tasty grape juice and letting it spoil.

Agreed.

So what is the difference between lox and smoked salmon in America?
We have smoked salmon and Gravad Lax in Holland, but the latter isn't lox.

F'x
9:08 PM
the difference is: if offered to drink lox, decline

And why is this guy called Rimmer?

F'x
(at least for me, lox is liquid oxygen)

Hah so I read.
I suppose it is an acquired taste.

@RegDwight did anyone ever refer you two to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Box-drawing_characters ?
Box drawing characters, also known as line drawing characters, or pseudographics, are widely used in text user interfaces to draw various frames and boxes. In graphical user interfaces these characters are much less useful, because it is much simpler to draw lines and rectangles directly with graphical APIs; besides, box drawing characters work only with fixed-width (monospaced) fonts. They are still useful, however, for plaintext comments on websites. Used along with box drawing characters are block elements, shade characters and terminal graphic characters; these can be used for filli...

Q: "Would" with a present meaning—is this correct?

RiMMERA great example I can think of: "Please, leave! I would be alone!" With would meaning something like, "I want to be alone." Is this correct, or not? EDIT: To further clarify, I am not aiming for would like to. My original question/sentence is not a typo.

@drachenstern I know Unicode by heart, like, all of it in its entirety, but a) where's the fun in that? and b) you still have to use multiple lines, and that's the real challenge.

In philosophy and logic, the liar paradox or liar's paradox (pseudomenon in Ancient Greek), is the statement "This sentence is false." Trying to assign to this statement a classical binary truth value leads to a contradiction (see Paradox). If "This sentence is false" is true, then it is false, which would in turn mean that it is actually true, but this would mean that it is false, and so on ad infinitum. Similarly, if "This sentence is false" is false, then it is true, which would in turn mean that it is actually false, but this would mean that it is true, and so on ad infinitum. His...

There was a children's encyclopedia set that we had when I was growing up, of roughly 15 volumes in nature, and the last in the series was a book replete with puzzles and logic games. The name of the set escapes me, but I'm almost certain it was affiliated with World Book. Regardless, they had colorful covers and spines, and the puzzle book was one of my favorite books.

I would recommend a ton of books, too. Alas, them ain't in English.

Reg Strikes Back is the twenty-first studio album by British singer/songwriter Elton John, released in 1988. It was his self-proclaimed comeback album, and his own way of fighting back against bad press. The "Reg" in Reg Strikes Back refers to Elton John's birth name, Reginald Kenneth Dwight. This is the last album that bassist Dee Murray would appear on. He died in 1992. The tracks "I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That" and "A Word In Spanish" peaked at #2 and #19 on the Billboard Hot 100, respectively. Elton brought back producer Chris Thomas.
