2:34 AM
i'm confused

2 hours later…
4:43 AM
@quintopia You expected a "Code Jam"?

vzn
@ThomasKlimpel and got "BTE"! "Better Than Expected"!

4:58 AM
@ThomasKlimpel yes

vzn
@quintopia so whats the problem?

no problem. what is this code jam that didn't happen but i was notified of?

@quintopia vzn would probably jam in ruby, but he may tell you more if you ask. I'm more of a problem solver type. For example, I fixed bug 142 in kdiff3 (because it is annoying), and the problem would now be to even get the slightest feedback from ...

vzn
@quintopia did you sign up for the notification? the idea of the code jam mtg (thx for asking) is just to connect with ppl who like code etc., in a very broad way. show and tell, conversation etc. more here

5:14 AM
Or I started to implement the following proposal in klayout, but it crashes too often, because I haven't studied the rest of the code sufficiently:
6
A: Mathematical software wish list

Thomas KlimpelIt would be great if mathematical plotting programs like gnuplot would support both mouse based zoom-in and mouse based zoom-out. I once tried to describe what I mean in a German post titled Zoom-out could be so easy, but the description is too incomplete. One issue of that post is that you norma...

@vzn Do you have current proposals for code jamming? Or maybe quintopia has some too?

hmm...i am a bit surprised that this is a thing in tcs chat? but it seems cool
i am surprised to see b_jonas on this list :P

vzn
@quintopia do you know b_jonas? the list was compiled over a long time

he hangs out in #esoteric
does the list mean people you've talk to here, or just people you're interested in their work?

vzn
@ThomasKlimpel the idea of "code jam" was that it was a catchy title for a chat room sort of like "h bar". ie just a catchy/ attractive name. have been trying to build momentum on that for several years with mixed effect/ success :|
@ThomasKlimpel collatz ofc! (a code jam of 1 for years!)
@quintopia the list is people who have signed up. it could be anyone.

collatz is too hard for me

vzn
5:28 AM
@quintopia #esoteric, is that irc? SE chat is so dead sometimes, am thinking might have to investigate IRC sometime.
@quintopia lol dont feel bad its too hard for anyone... aka "join the club"! have you played with it at all?
@quintopia why surprised? can easily guess but want to hear you say it :P

@quintopia He doesn't mean to completely solve it. He means to play with it, to do visualizations, compute statistics, implement it with a finite state transducer, ... anything goes

vzn
@ThomasKlimpel exactly. ofc solving it would be "nice too", wink :P
when was young, the goal was solving it, now (older), the goal is just working on it without triggering manic depression :P
code jams are all about play right? "QED"!

oooh...i think i do want to trigger manic depression
goes to spotify for some jimi

vzn
@quintopia its a serious thing! ;)

it's a seriously good song

vzn
5:34 AM
purple haze runs thru my brain!

so code jam is for playing with tcs stuff too?
i have a few languages needing implementation

@quintopia Cool, tell me more...

this is the one I'd most like to see implemented (and possibly the most difficult to implement): esolangs.org/wiki/CASTLE

vzn
hey guys thx for dropping by, was in a hot springs/ restaurant in mtns during the scheduled event, now have to crash, plz drop by later, thx for stopping by, lets continue this fun chat & plz feel free to invite all your friends too... later :)

@quintopia Looks interesting. But I will also leave now.

5:48 AM
well that lasted a long time

9 hours later…
vzn
2:58 PM
@ThomasKlimpel good idea, gnuplot windows has zoomin/ zoomout (reset). the zoomout/ reset seems to be broken on some versions of gnuplot.
@quintopia lol yeah really keepin the momentum going there (without me) eh?
what prjs are you interested in? what have you done with collatz? what languages do you know? ETC

vzn
3:25 PM
fyi ABD in CS chat is interested in CAs & has written a paper lately.
@ThomasKlimpel what is klayout?
@ThomasKlimpel thx for noticing cogito ergo sum

3 hours later…
6:04 PM
klayout is a very good viewer for the layout data you deal with in semiconductor manufacturing, and it is open source. Just use it to look at the different layers in some standard cell libraries and maybe some obsolete compete chip, and you get a good feeling for the things semiconductor manufacturing is dealing with, and why the described zoom-out functionality can be important.
Some day I will have to blog about this (and include some interesting standard cells and complete chips), and how the way hierarchy is used to compress layouts is related to inverse semigroups in a way that can't be emulated by groups.
@vzn Sorry, it was actually in the middle of the night for me. I had made a small mistake which forced me to interrupt my sleep, and I had to go back to sleep sooner or later anyway. So you leaving was a good opportunity for me to leave as well.
