This was not in the center of discussions about , but one of the options that were mentioned was also creating some kind of artwork that would be placed somewhere on the site.
Having seen many pictures posted by him on the main site, I am a bit surprised that Joseph O'Rourke hasn't joined the discussion.
Some examples of sites which have some artwork in the top header (I'm not sure what's the correct term) are RPG and Arqade. (The latter has also something in the footer.)

A: How can we visually differentiate MathOverflow from MathStackExchange within the constraints of the new design themes?

Tim CampionWe could consider choosing some kind of art in the header of the page. MO has always had a "plain" sort of theme, but maybe it's time for something new. If we did this, I imagine we'd want to solicit particular suggestions from the community and then vote on it.

Art is a great way to make the site unique. It can be a full-width pattern like Photography or a single image like Role-playing Games or Worldbuilding. With the latter, be aware that with responsive design, we limit the artwork width to prevent it from overlapping with the logo, though it can be integrated somewhat - see Movies & TV for an example. — Catija ♦ Dec 14 at 17:37
If somebody is thinking about possibilities of "mathematics-related" pictures which might be suitable for these purposes, simply looking at some images posted on MathOverflow might serve as an inspiration.
The question Proofs without words has also be mentioned here in chat.

At the moment there is only one MO question in the HNQ: Old books you would like to have rewritten with high-quality typesetting.
