@TroyJamesSobotka I intentionally killed that tag, is not needed. Please do not edit and add it back. BSE already has and tags.

Is this is the room where we complain about impossible rigid body sims?

@Gez please do not edit questions to include .
@meed96 it can be

@David It is right now

@meed96 what is the trouble?

The horror of re-baking your simulation a hundred times, and every single time, your objects explode hundreds of miles away from the starting position
Rigid bodies feel so unstable in Blender. One minute they work, the next, they don't.

1:49 AM
make sure you have the scale, and rotation applied for all your objects.

I've definitely done that
Followed by setting the origin to geometry

and you make sure to always go back to 0 on the timeline, before running your next sim?

I bake each simulation before watching it, but yes.
Thing is, I get it working, and then it breaks. I'm on my 3rd backup file. Just going to have to go slower next time I suppose.
There's so many unknowns as well. I'm keeping all my objects on separate layers, and who knows how that's affecting it.

@meed96 and this is just a rigid body sim?

@David Plain old, full of squares n' cubes, rigid body sim.

1:53 AM
odd

Oh very very odd. Sometimes they explode into the air, then stop, and slide down an invisible wall. I check everything, make sure it's convex hull, try it as mesh, but nothing seems to be generating that invisible wall.
Very hit or miss.

@meed96 any hidden objects?

@David Didn't think of that, but no, no hidden objects.
I tried duplicating my stack of cubes and moving it to a different layer away from geometry, and it acted the same
Now stuff is randomly disappearing 2 frames in.
@David I'm very confused about Active vs Passive, perhaps you know the difference?

@meed96 I just checked, objects on other layers will affect the rigid body sim

@David Then what does the "Collision Groups" (bottom of Rigid Body Collisions tab) do?
It looks like a highlighter for which layers you want affecting your scene.

1:58 AM
@meed96 passive, will just sit there no matter what. Other rigid body objects will hit it. Active rigid body objects can move. it is that simple

But...but it isn't though. If I use "Active" and then uncleck Dynamic, then the object just sits there like a passive object.

@meed96 that is where you can specify what other objects the object will hit. (works the same as the game engine)

I've never used the game engine.

ok
then the rigid body will only interact with other objects on that same collision layer, has no connection to the regular layers.

Collision layers? Is that a game engine thing?
I've never heard of collision layers.

2:01 AM
@meed96 nope
those are what I'm talking about

@David That's the box, but I have no idea what they do.

I just told you

OHHHH
I get it now!
I was wondering where you went to set specific objects to specific layers, but I then realized that that was where you set them. Right.

open up a new file, have a passive plane, and two cubes both active rigid bodies. but set the collision layers different for the two cubes, it will fall right through.

@David Okay, so say for example I want an object in my simulation that doesn't do anything. I want objects to hit it, but I don't want it to move. Like a ground plane that you'd drop stuff onto.
What's the difference between setting that object to Passive, or to Active with Dynamic unchecked?
@gandalf3 I sense a disturbance in the force, as if a powerful master has appeared nearby.

2:08 AM
:P

@meed96 that is a good question, I dont know.

can haz lightsaber?

Only if it doesn't have tiny baby lightsabers coming out of the side of it.

Q: What is the difference between an Active animated rigid body and a Passive rigid body?

gandalf3In the Rigid-body settings, there are two options, Active and Passive. My question is, What exactly does the Passive setting do? how is it different than Animated Active? (I know what Active and Passive are, just not what the difference between Active Animated and Passive Animated is) Thanks

@gandalf3 Dug that question up while searching earlier

2:09 AM
^^ related

I didn't understand the answer

It's mostly a semantic difference

That literally just makes it more confusing.
But fortunately I'm not trying to keyframe anything in my scene
I just don't get the difference between Active with Dynamic unchecked and plain old Passive.
They seem to be the exact same thing

Not too sure about that
AFAIK the only difference is dynamic is animatable

In Andrew's tutorial on Rigid objects he made his ground plane passive, but he made his mid-air stationary chain link Active with dynamic unchecked. Not sure if you've seen that before.

2:13 AM
But you can't animate between passive and active types

No no, nothing like that.
I just look at animations that have characters interacting with simulations, like buildings being destroyed, and I can't get that to work in Blender.
Forget a character rig jumping through my building, can't even get the building to sit still on a flat ground :P

huh

I'm on my 4th attempt (file number 4), and this time I'm going REALLY slow....trying to see what exactly is causing my problems.
Because all my brain remembers is that it was working and then magically stopped working without me changing any settings.

Sounds like the rigid body sim all right

^ my life for the past hour

2:16 AM
XD
Is it possible you could upload your file?
I could take a look..

Well, so far it's still working....but as soon as it suddenly breaks I'll send it over.
So that's how you do italics
Is this how you do bold?

okay :)

Yup
Just exploded into midair

o.o That didn't take long

I took my massive chunk of terrain and set it to passive. Next timeline scrub made the blocks explode.

2:20 AM
scrubbing the timeline isn't guaranteed (or even really expected) to give correct results, unless the simulation is baked

Maybe I should go piece by piece, slowly setting all of them to passive....until I find the one.
I would be baking but as soon as you bake once you can't ever use the timeline again (at least not that I've found)
Then you have to bake every single time

@meed96 you can free the bake
The bake button should turn into a free bake button

@gandalf3 And then the bake decides it doesn't want to be free again

huh?

Freeing the bake doesn't do anything. It just keeps the frames in memory.
And refuses to over-write them with timeline playing

2:23 AM
Even if you toggle edit mode or change some settings?

@gandalf3 Scratch that, I was being a fool. You were right.

oh phew.. I was worried your rigid body sim might be more haunted than normal o.O

Some days of the week it is.
First piece changed from Convex to Mesh seems to have stopped the exploding....*for now*
Isn't Margin set to 0 like....not recommended?

yeees..
But sometimes needed

Hmmmmm.....
High margin isn't causing the gunpowder to go off for the moment...so at default it stays.

2:27 AM
/me is spooked due to having just typed 'margin: 0' into a css file right as you said that

I wish more than you think to understand code jokes....but I just don't :/
It's probably hilarious
CSS is like, webpages...so margin 0 seems like it would be okay :P

@meed96 Not really.. just a rather unlikely coincidence. or was it?

@gandalf3 Quickly, type in some code to make rigid body sims extremely stable.
The fate of my Blend file depends on your CSS code.

rm -rf /blender/extern/bullet2
There.
It's stable. It doesn't exist, but it's stable.

Changing convex to mesh seems to have worked again....
Quick question, why are small objects difficult for rigid bodies to handle? Isn't size just relative in 3D space?
There's infinite points between my two vertices, even if I make them closer.

2:31 AM
The problem is @David is that alpha-format specifically addresses the format. Please tell me where the other tags do the same. It is the wrong call.

@meed96 I think it's not so much size as the difference in size between two colliding objects

@gandalf3 But why can't the empire state building bump into a wineglass? ._.

It can if you have a big enough wineglass ;)
Of course a wineglass is one of those annoying concave shapes...

(Or better @David, ditch the other tags that are effectively echochamber of something nebulous.)

@gandalf3 Confused why my objects don't work with the Convex Hull setting....they aren't super complicated pieces of geometry

2:35 AM
@TroyJamesSobotka IMO it'd be better to have a tag like . I doubt there are too many questions specifically about the alpha format/type (maybe 4-5 atm?), but probably quite a number about some aspect of the alpha channel
@meed96 If you enter edit mode, select all, then run convex hull in the space menu you can see what the collision mesh ends up looking like

@gandalf3 MY EYES
That explains why my objects were sliding down an invisible slope
LOL....
Good grief running convex hull turns my objects into gross deformed masses of geometry.

yep

@gandalf3 That Christmas santa plane gif is really cool looking, that your work?

yes

Surprised you didn't at least make it to the finalists

2:46 AM
yeah.. :/
maybe next year
The winner was amazing though :O

@gandalf3 The problem is that prior to the answers, no one even realized it was a format issue.
@gandalf3 So of course there are no tags when 99.95% of the current readership doesn't even understand it is an issue.
See my point?
@gandalf3 I just randomly looked at about four posts last night and, sure enough, the issue is specifically related to the alpha format. That's just random search and find. I can only imagine there are more with existing incorrect answers or clarifications.

Gez
I agree with @Troy
Most of the questions regarding alpha channel are related to the confusion between its formats.

3:39 AM
@TroyJamesSobotka @Gez With that in mind, it might actually be more effective to have a more general tag. If users are asking questions because they are confused over premultiplied/straight, they likely won't know their issue is due to "alpha format"

gandalf3 I'm actually open to anything that makes it clear that it is about the type of alpha, not just generic "oh that's transparency" or some other inaccurate tag.
@gandalf3 that is...

Of course, other users would then add the tag.. But I can't imagine too many questions besides "my alpha channel doesn't work as expected".
Perhaps it's just my limited imagination though. Do you have some examples of other questions specifically related to the type of alpha?
@troy_s I tend to agree that is far too general
Grouping material transparency (seeing objects behind other objects) and image transparency (alpha) together is perhaps more confusing and not really helping organization

gandalf3 until more folks get up to speed with how the formats differ, and how there is really only one-true-alpha, the tag won't get tagged.
@gandalf3 Exactly my point: We have three or four tags that are utterly meaningless really

It can go the other way too. Tags which are too specific only apply to a very small number of questions and hence don't help organization much either

@gandalf3 Agree 100%. My gut says that a tag should have to do specifically with the answer as in what was the question getting wrong or had wrong or wasn't clear that made the solution possible?

4:31 AM
@troy_s My understanding has always been more tag the question, not the answer

5:09 AM
what does it mean when peopel call little kids "a ham???"

Hooo boy, lots went on yesterday, huh?
What exactly did you want me to check out, @RadishofKnowledgeUntold? (man wish I could stick those together but I don't know if it'll not tag you... Lemme try this...
@RadishofKnowledge if that doesn't work

The Egyptian god Anubis, for those who don't know ^^

3:42 PM
huh! Nice job!

:D

@Gwenn hand drawn? Or digital?

@meed96 Drawn by hand with colored pencils and graphite pencils. I still haven't gotten the hang of digital painting yet.

@Gwenn Nice. Can't draw at all myself.

@meed96 Also, hello and welcome to the Renderfarm. :D

3:51 PM
Thanks, been here before though, just not very often.

Ah, okay.

Complained to Gandalf for a half hour last night about rigid bodies. He was able to help me a bit though.

4:15 PM
@Gwenn pretty cool, but you did the nemes headress weird... :/.. so unless you were a egypt nerd (sorry) you wouldn't notice
but awesome art
@BookWyrm17 there was a link in the post too a minecraft version of blender on BN

ooh whaaatttt? Lemme find it again
im not seeing the link hmm
oh wait the yellow made the blue link seem black

@Gwenn rofl

HOW have I never seen this thing before?!
It looks amazing!
wait what exactly does it do?

@iKlsR can you super ping him here?

Um I've never used an addon before... how does this work exactly?
I'm so confused now... Still excited, but confused...

4:20 PM
@GiantCowFilms who?

The guy who couldn't use BE

who?
oh
hmm
@hawkenfox Hey, can you let @GiantCowFilms know what errors you experienced when trying to upload. Thanks.
cheers

@iKlsR thanks :D
@David BTW, why don't we have a tag?
for generic simulation problems which are not attached to any particular method of simulation?

how do i use an addon someone please help i am so confused but this looks amazing....

Ctrl-Alt-U
to open user preferences ... now is this addon installed?

4:27 PM
I found out how to install it, I think. Find the file and use the user preferences to install it. I just have no clue what to do with it now

@RadishofKnowledge Yeah, Egyptian mythology is not really my area of expertise. Also, the whole thing was originally just supposed to be a quick sketch before it turned into a longer project. Ah well.

what do addons DO, exactly? I thought they added some sort of build in rig to append and changed some settings up so its easier and stuff but I dunno...

@Gwenn should be lankier but looks great
> build in rig to append and changed some settings up so its easier
wut :)
@BookWyrm17 they allow you to extend the functionality of a piece of software basically

@BookWyrm17 Depends on your addon. Also, did you enable it?

oooh..
So how do I use this one? do you use them all basically the same?
I checkmarked it...

4:36 PM
Basically it does what it says it does in its documentation (if it has any)
if you are speaking about rigify, there should be something new in the add menu....?

ok... lemme seeee

@BookWyrm17 if you notice there are several categories, they all do specific stuff as you should be able to see in the description

I'm not seeing a README anywhere....
OK...
its this one here if that helps

@Gwenn it's still awesome...

@RadishofKnowledge do you happen to know what that addon did?

4:43 PM
@BookWyrm17 download this
@BookWyrm17 idk... something about creeps. i assumed it wiould make more sense if you did minecraft
Wait!!! wrong one
this:

:D Ok... I think its less about minecraft and more about cool stuff.. but I dunno I assumed it would have more send if you did blender

lol
okay.. just thpought it was something you'd be interested in
Added the Mob Spawner functionality! You can now with a click of a button spawn in a variety of included minecraft rigs, or install your own!
Now there are 25 Included rigs! Credits for the creators of these rigs are on the readme page
This slightly random assortment of rigs will be expanded very soon, and eventually will cover all mobs in the game! Some optimizations need to be made first.
No significant changes have been made to meshswapping or material prepping.
Added several more objects/groups for meshswapping both for jmc2obj and Mineways, including: bookshelves, some doors, crafting table, enchanting table (pre-aniamted), and more flora.
Added the license for the models, CC-BY. If you use the meshswap files, give credit by linking to this addon!
Changed the default meshswap exporter to none, forcing users to select the right one.
MeshSwap now will keep the same selection after running as before
Fixed meshswap offset function (part of Mineways function), objects should be placed in the right place now

Yeah thats what I thought... But I dunno how to get the rigs or anything :/

whut

4:48 PM
hey! hats are gone.
(thank goodness)

heheh
one mo my youtube is acting up
does it say anything about how to get the rigs?
ahHA!
I found a new tab along the toolbar that lets me spawn stuff :D
Yaaay!
man now im getting errors
I thought this was supposed to be eaaasy :/
its "not a library" apparently. Do I have to find a different folder for where the stuff is?
It looks right...

5:49 PM
@GiantCowFilms where would you need that tag where , , , , , or is not already sufficient?
@RadishofKnowledge why?

@David when you know it needs to be simulated, but you aren't sure which simulation type.
physics is close, but doesn't quite cover it

is that likely? when do you not know if you want smoke, or an ocean?

Yes, I wanted to edit it into a question just now

link please?
(I now wonder why I put a question mark on that last message.)

lost it D:

1 hour later…
7:19 PM
@BookWyrm17 idk really...
@David because they were stupid. :P
i need a spring about half the length of a pen spring but the same diameter... i don't know where to find one

@RadishofKnowledge them fighting words.

@RadishofKnowledge No, they were not! :P I had a scarf, @David, if I recall, had a bathtub and gandalf3 had a Mayan temple; what's stupid about that?!

@someonewithpc thank you.

@RadishofKnowledge Cut it?
@RadishofKnowledge eBay?
@RadishofKnowledge ebay.com/itm/…

1 hour later…
8:52 PM
i hate ebay

@RadishofKnowledge Why?

because it's unpredictable

It'd the only place I buy from

does portugal have home depot?

Tough, mostly because Amazon doesn't ship many things here
@RadishofKnowledge ?

8:54 PM
Home Depot
they sell hardware and building material
@someonewithpc oh.
i couldn't find them on amazon

@RadishofKnowledge There a reason I put a question mark there..

@someonewithpc thats a no then...
what about Radio Shack?

@RadishofKnowledge Not that one, I don't think
But there are others, of course
@RadishofKnowledge No

Lowes?
i'll bet i could get springs at hobby store...

@RadishofKnowledge Dude, it's a different country, from across the ocean

8:56 PM
hobbytown USA, Hobby lobby...
@someonewithpc Aliens!!!
i was just checking...
what hardware stores do you have?

@RadishofKnowledge Hardware not in the electronic sense, I suppose?

you may not understand, but a place without home depot just seems impossible. :D
@someonewithpc yes, not

@RadishofKnowledge I think I do

you have to have walmart, right?

Aki (misspell of 'aqui', meaning here), for one
@RadishofKnowledge Big ocean!

8:59 PM
No walmart????!?!?!?!?!

@RadishofKnowledge Maxmat

NO WALMART!?!??!??!
even new zealand has walmart
and i think south africa did too, but i can't remember

@RadishofKnowledge The one with the fat people, no :P

???
i live in colorado... no fat people here
is that the opinion? americans are fat? lol

@RadishofKnowledge That too :P But I meant Wallmart
Don't they have scooters for fat people, or something?
Nothing like that here

9:04 PM
@someonewithpc no, they don't... where'd you hear that? XD

@RadishofKnowledge Do a google search for "Wallmart people"

they have wheelchair\carts for cripples

Actually, better if you don't

@someonewithpc lol
@someonewithpc wasn't going to

@RadishofKnowledge Here

9:06 PM
whoa

9:33 PM
yeah, thats not normal... never evenseen anyone besides cripples using them, and i've never seen anyone that fat

Well, maybe not where you live...
Apparently, 8Million vertices is a bit too much :P
(Just a suzzane whit a block remesh modifier turned up to eleven)

10:14 PM
the only place that would have people that fat would be wisconsin... i've been to almost every state at this point, and wisconsin is the fattest

11:08 PM
What's up doc?

11:46 PM
