12:37 AM
@RadishoftheOpera @X-27 @NoviceInDisguise This is quite useful for getting a quick start on learning git try.github.io/levels/1/challenges/1

@GiantCowFilms Those types of simulators are cool
@RadishoftheOpera If you want, I might be able to try to get you something
I can't guarantee quality though.

12:56 AM
This is so cool, @David, You can have a remote git repo without github/bitbucket, just on your local machine! (Which means that if you are not working with anyone, you need not get a private repo service)

1:12 AM
Do you even need a not-so-remote remote repo?
How would that do anything that your local local repo couldn't?

1:29 AM
@RadishoftheOpera My audio system is screwed up, can't get Cubase to recognize my headphones, so no, otherwise I'd love to :P

@NoviceInDisguise Why does it need to recognize your headphones?

I get no audio output otherwise
I really need to splurge to get a better audio card devoted to music

@NoviceInDisguise It won't output anything unless it can find your headphones?
There's no way to force it either?

It is an issue with my sound card and how Cubase handles audio outputs

Okay

1:44 AM
@NoviceInDisguise no problem. . . Whats it like to be a music junkie and not be able to do anyhting? going through withdrawal?
@TARDISMaker sure!
thanks

@RadishoftheOpera It is awful :P I have been weeks without writing a single note

@RadishoftheOpera Okay, can you give me some sort of reference for what you're looking for?

I was in the middle of writing a track too

@TARDISMaker Like jaws, but instead of a shark, a 12 lb. mudcat
just underwater sounding i guess.
@NoviceInDisguise :(

2:10 AM
@RadishoftheOpera So a bit more lighthearted?
btw, I'm listening to that soundtrack for the first time
I've never heard the soundtrack, and I've never seen the movie
I just realized that I'm actually listening to the Jaws 2 soundtrack
I doubt the music is much different though
Also, how fast do you need it done, and is it one piece that needs to loop seamlessly?

needs to be done by saturday if you can, sorry it's such late notice, and no, a fade-in/fade-out will work also. i can cover the blenkspace with ambiance

2:40 AM
@RadishoftheOpera that's okay
Because of it, I just can't guarantee that I'll get it done in time.
Or that it will be any good
Okay, I'm not going to work on it any tonight
I was almost starting to turn it into some music from Christopher Nolan's Batman Trilogy :)

3:05 AM
I'm done for today also... :/ i was hoping to get more done

3:23 AM
@TARDISMaker What?!?! I use ortho for nearly everything. (you really should try ortho, for a bit.)
@GiantCowFilms I dont see the significance in what you discovered.

3:56 AM
@David No more reliance on bitbucket/github for private repos
Probably not much of a discovery, but I only just figured it now
@NoviceInDisguise Maybe you should completely reformat you machine... good time to do it anyway since win 10 just came out.
@TARDISMaker so much for front end in one day XD
I encountered a worse then centering problem
XD

1 hour later…
5:08 AM
@David I should probably mention that I don't use the default 35mm focal length for the viewport.
I usually increase it to at least 50mm
Sometimes 80
And I have tried ortho, but it just doesn't work for me
@GiantCowFilms What issue did you run into?
Also, what are you making?

3 hours later…
7:56 AM
hi is someone there?

3 hours later…
10:52 AM
@GiantCowFilms I probably should. That will take ages :P

11:17 AM
I love writing scripts
Like filming scripts
I just "finished" a short film script, but I'm scared to death because I need to do creature VFX . . . and i never did that before
It will be interesting for sure

4 hours later…
2:56 PM
@Jonathan Now....
@TARDISMaker Hard to describe
@TARDISMaker A website

2 hours later…
4:39 PM
I find it very sad there is so few activity in this chat, would totally love like a really
alive Blender chat. Is there something more like it?

Hello

Hi there

@Jonathan This one can be alive...
Sometimes it just dies off if most of the users are busy

It's a real shame

occasionally we can have 10 users chatting :D...
@Jonathan Not at all
There are a fair number of regulars

4:41 PM
Trying to chat a little bit with people whilst teaching myself bge

gandalf3 NoviceInDisguise RadishoftheOpera X-27 David....

this is why I think an active chat would be best

just to name the most active
@Jonathan As I said, it is rarely this empty
usally we average 1000+ message per day

good, then I know who to bother when I could need some advice :)
oh well, then
I just stay here to see wether it becomes more crowded

I know a thing or two about the BGE, @David @RadishoftheOpera and @X-27 are knowledgeable as well
@Jonathan We also have our slightly dead collaborative BGE project

 BGE - Dinosaurs

Room for the people collaborating on The Game Where You Don't ...
It will probably pick up...
on that note, where is everybody?

4:43 PM
hello

Ah there we go!

Perfect timing or what?

hi

hi
I like your name

@NoviceInDisguise You'll back me up, that chat is usually much more active
@NoviceInDisguise I wonder why :P

4:43 PM
@GiantCowFilms yes
@GiantCowFilms lol

I'll check that game out when I find the time, maybe I can learn from the code or add my own spice

@Jonathan Yes
its open source and on github

had this topic about a blender chat with others before
think it was in the blender irc lol

@Jonathan O.o?
@Jonathan I don't like irc
we are much chattier and more personalable

we were like "there should be a platform for a Blender related chat"
yeah I feel so too ^^
regarding bge a quick question:

4:46 PM
@Jonathan okay

do you know where I find a function to load a new scene?
cant find a method for the KX_Scene objects

@Jonathan You mean in python?

yup

Easy in logic, python, no clue

and there is no function in the logic module

4:47 PM
I believe you have to use a logic brick
+ python (optional)
Unless @David knows of another way

That is one thing about the BGE I don't like, I feel like everything I do is a hack

No problem I'm still teaching myself all of the bge module so if Im done and went through all of the tutorials I'll let you know ^^

I'd try looking into the logic bricks

@NoviceInDisguise yea it totally is lol

The API is, for the most part, just for interacting with your logic bricks, not the actual game
(yes it sucks)

4:49 PM
checked them out before but they are too complicated I'd rather like to do this in code it's better to realize
and easier

game --> Logic bricks (sensor) ---> python (controller) --> Logic bricks (actuator) --> game
@Jonathan It may not be possible
You kind of have to pad your python with logic bricks, I know, it stinks

yea I noticed that too but isnt there a way to just start a script instead of starting it via an always sensor-python controller combo of some object?

@Jonathan No
1 min ago, by GiantCowFilms
game --> Logic bricks (sensor) ---> python (controller) --> Logic bricks (actuator) --> game
That is how python in the game engine works

Dammit

in a few cases you can bypase the actuator, but those are rareish
However, you can change virtually every property of the logic bricks with python
I liken them to including libraries
esp the actuators.
Each one you plug in is a new library that will allow you to interact with your game...
@Jonathan this is how you can look at it
Sensors are events, that instead of making in code, you make in logic bricks
actuators are APIs that instead of including in code, you attach with logic bricks

4:54 PM
Yup I know that already :P
Yet
When you say that some things cant be written in code and need the logic bricks it confuses me.
This cannot be possible, is it?
game --> Logic bricks (sensor) ---> python (controller) --> Logic bricks (actuator) --> game?

You need to attach the logic bricks to the python to interact with that part of the API
@Jonathan Game calls an event (sensor), which calls python, python then calls the actuator to edit the game.

Isn't it actually the always-sensor triggering a Python Controller?
to start the first script

@Jonathan Which ever sensor you want
you can even have multiple
Think of it like an event
always will trigger once at the start of the game (and never again beacause it is never reset)
key press will trigger when a key is pressed
etc

that's a little bit disappointing I have to say

I know
I felt the same way

4:59 PM
well I check this out further and how it works as an .exe maybe to realize it won't be that complicated.
I'll let you know what I come up with, thanks for your help so far :D

@Jonathan The exe is complied magically (and unreliably) out of hte .blend
@Jonathan Alright
stick around, @David may have some extra useful advice
he knows a lot more then I

is he btw the david who made those rabbit video games?

@Jonathan ? I don't think so............

Like this one guy once sent me a link on a question which was for a video about a speech from a David Rosen it was about procedural animation.
Thought it was him maybe.

5:16 PM
@GiantCowFilms Just checked this out and saw you were right about the scene thing.

@Jonathan Ah okay yes...
I encountered that exact problem in the Zombie Game
somewhere in the history there will be the solution
(it is now changed though)

@GiantCowFilms Then you just have to set a Scene Actuator and activate it. A little detour but in the end it does what one needs.

@Jonathan Yes exactly
as a said earlier, think of it as attaching an API
You just need to plug in the connector and your good to go

You say that most of the stuff can just be realized with the actuators so this might be a little bit awkward.
Stuff like movement can also be done with GameObject methods
so I tought maybe...
might require to get used to but seems kind of comfortable on the other hand
where can I find the newest build of the zombie game on github?
I'm kind of a noob with github and it has a complicated mapping.
Nvm downloaded it from the homepage...
which doesnt work actually

Just download the .zip
Unzip it and run the l1.blend file (under levels)

5:28 PM
@NoviceInDisguise got it, first thing I notice is that the lower 3 buttons dont work.
ok seems like someone messed with it, there is actually nothing to be played :)
lol sorry my mistake it does work
had the wrong file
on g you can throw grenades on right click jump and r does use something but nothing happens
how to use the weapon with 55 ammo?

Click, MMB to enable, disable
Faster with it disabled

5:43 PM
i managed to use the jeep, different on views with c pretty cool ^^
and the lights
how to actually use the missiles thoughß
I actually really like it how the zombies are influencing on the jeep
they push it away one runs around it and tries to get in
quite cool
lol i just drived with the jeep had the gatling gun enabled, then went out of it with f or e and the zombies were following onto the jeep

lol
@Jonathan Comma key for missiles

@Jonathan Yes... that must be fixed
still some work to be done ;D

6:26 PM
sup

yo

not a lot

hi! nice name!
says a lot.

@Jonathan BTW, how did you accidentally get a greek letter beta instead of a question mark?

@NoviceInDisguise I just put gasoline in a brand new Briggs-and-Stratton, so I'm happy today! :D

6:28 PM
Nice!

you mean this ß ?

yes.
it means a failure of technique that no-one can explain.
some-long-last-name effect

it's the lower case letter for the question mark key on german keyboards

maybe gogeimler? or something like that.

6:29 PM
it's called "sharp s" and sounds like it

@Jonathan Ah! ours is /
@Jonathan like a "Z"?

@Jonathan Interesting!

yea i know i switch to english layout by accident sometimes when pressing the hotkey combo for it lol

I switched to Yiddish once

6:31 PM
lol german keyboards got a built-in factory functions to alert secret police then

@NoviceInDisguise im kind of the do-it-myself guy too so I totally know what you mean, wish you best luck with it. what always helped me is to realize that one shouldnt give up learning the whole thing because it can be really demotivating not to know how to achieve this and that utilizing the program and/or python.

Yeah, it is hard to stay on track if you are doing a project by yourself

When this happens I always need a huge dose of stuff like this: youtube.com/watch?v=Qu3Na3nDeWg
@RadishoftheOpera Are you actually a professional designer with Blender or also hobby designer?

@Jonathan He is a hobbiest

6:39 PM
kk

@Jonathan no thanks

@NoviceInDisguise lol not everyone's taste ^^

Hans Zimmer is my favorite
I listen to film scores
I actually like writing music a lot

you write it in notes on note sheets?

A lot of MIDI in Cubase
Live MIDI recording
Stuff like that

6:41 PM
pretty cool
I play drums, did quite some stuff with fruity loops and love to just jam for hours on a korg kaossilator lol
do you record just a keyboard or also other stuff?

I once improvised on my electric piano for 50 minutes without a break, so yes
I do that, and i also use a irish whistle
I can play guitar and violin a bit, but not pro level by any stretch

that sounds interesting lol
you should check out the kaossilator pro
you can also use as kind of an usb controller with fruity loops or cubase

then you can assign like anything to its x or yaxis and play with it, it is pretty much super intuitive and super addictive you should check it out some time.

@Jonathan Sounds cool!

6:46 PM
@NoviceInDisguise it doesnt work

Maybe being in germany is an issue?
does that work?

yup it worked

Probably not your style, but that is my nearest approach to modern stuff

no no I love any music!
especially from the indie guys

6:48 PM
just not that bleep bloop gaga charts garbage
and pseudo hiphop bs

lol, I agree

may I tell you what I think of your style regarding my own personal taste when it comes to music?

well as the issue of music is a rather higher one and I'm not versed enough to tell you exactly about which notes or which scale to prefer for your melodies I just put it like this:
I basically love this style but I rather like it when the melodies are a bit more mystic. When they have more of a neutral yet beautiful touch to it.
The way you play them I find it sounds too cute.

They are a bit more "free"? I think that is a good point. A lot of it was MIDI based, which makes it a lot harder, but I totally agree

6:52 PM
But it is a common way and you do it right so it fits it.
No I dont really mean free

Oh well
I'll figure it out when I get Cubase working again
Speaking of indie musicians, how do you like Piano solo?
more modern styles

Im just not versed enough, one could explain it more objective explaining which notes, accords or which scale to use to get that sound.

Maybe things like using the minor third, note bending, and such would help

Im not a fan of it but rather have respect for piano players from the point of a drummer lol
See, you know it better than me already ^^

Well this guy is one of my favorites: soundcloud.com/zacharybrunomusic/sets/dawn-light-album
@Jonathan lol, I pretend I know it anyways ;)

6:56 PM
When it comes to notes I basically now a little bit about some scales but thats it. Reading notes on a note sheet is a whole different story for drums too.

yeah
Being able to read notes and having a solid base in music theory makes other instruments a lot easier to learn
You are just learning technique at that point

that dude plays really good especially regarding his age, did he composit it himselfß
ß =?

Yes, he writes them all himself

little genius haha ^^

You like more mystic/spacey sounds
There are basically no melodies in those pieces tho

These guys are pretty cool: soundcloud.com/methlab-recordings/… At minute 17:00 they give an interview and they talk about how they were influenced by video game sounds and stuff and the background track of the interview totally has the skyrim touch to it.

Lol did you recognize it?

Sorta
I listen to game tracks too

7:09 PM
like that slow atmospheric sound of it
gotta love it

Nice background track
The rest sounds like someone is choking a speaker tho :P

yea it's not the cleanest sound ^^

Anyways, nice chatting. I g2g for now

ok bb

2 hours later…
8:52 PM
@TARDISMaker my default is 55
@Jonathan bge.logic.addScene()to load a scene in the same file or use bge.logic.LibLoad()to load from another blend file. LibLoad addScene

@GiantCowFilms Me, maybe :)

@Jonathan that is true, for some thing you need the logic brick. (most can be coded without an actuator)

@NoviceInDisguise I second this

9:10 PM
@TARDISMaker @GiantCowFilms definitely goes at the top of that list. :)

@David Yeah :)

@TARDISMaker Oh sorry, I forgot you
@David How could I have forgotten
@David WHY could I not find that D: D: D:
@Jonathan as you can see, @David is the real expert

@GiantCowFilms because for some reason you have a problem with the blender docs.

9:24 PM
Kind of cool
The result isn't all that good, but the techniques could be used in really cool ways.

Everybody should read this. A new user asking first on meta if his question would fit our site's scope.

9:48 PM
@David It's rare for newer users to post anything!
I'm surprised to see something like that on there, especially by a new user.

10:13 PM
@David I do
They don't google search well
I need search
'Cuase I don't have the patients to read the hole manual

10:42 PM
@RadishoftheOpera Sorry, I won't be able to get you any music to use
I only have a few hours left today, and I'm going to be gone all day tommarow

11:36 PM
@TARDISMaker Yeah I'm leaving at 5:45 AM tomorrow so I won't be around either
