You need to triangulate your mesh, and you need to add a lot of variation.

Lighting is as always, critical.

I would usually use sun lamp (big environment and outside) thats strong then two weak ones without shadow on the sides and some ambient occlusion

A lot of contrast is good for low-poly stuff. I think a three-point setup could work, just adjust the color and strength. Also make the lamp size small to sharpen the shadows.

Edit Mode - Select non-Manifold - F, then it works well with booleans.
