RELOAD! There are 6379 unanswered questions (90.0759% answered)

yeah..none of those revenu streams sound amazing to me
need to read the accounts

the revenue itself isn't actually that bad

This, from your link above,...sounds like what it feel like
"The CMs have been actively told (read: commanded) that they cannot empathise with the community, a wedge is being driven between us, the community and our points of contact with the company, the CM team."

it's just ... not something the VCs behind a company like to see
@OliverSchonrock yea, that's been a smouldering issue behind the curtains for quite some while now

sorry, you mean : revenue= OKish...but not hockey stick => unhappy VC ... ?

12:04 AM
yea, basically

if that's the case, that makes lots of sense, and that might be driven some of the weird anti community decision from central

SO didn't used to aim for hockey stick type revenue graphs, which was a good starting idea
and it allowed multiple strong and cohesive communities to form

when did they get VC funding?
not at the beginning?

years and years back
not directly at the beginning, no, but reasonably quickly after

right...so the "we don't aim for hockey sticks", was a philosophy...not a fact
philosophy always gets overtaken by facts...of the financial variety

12:07 AM
actually... I checked back and there were four VC funding rounds

bascially they know they are hosed and are in the last twicthing throws & making a bunch of bad decisionsa

the first was two years after founding (in 2010), and then in 2011, 2013 and the last in 2015

right..and nothing for 5yrs
and the money has now run out

nah.

so the mgmt team is under huge pressure and they are trying to "crisis manage"..and making a bunch of mistakes

12:09 AM
the company is highly likely to be profitable, actually
From the public comments of the former CEO it seems that they're aiming for an IPO

it has to be more than profitable..it has to produce hckey sticks

and they changed CEO three months ago to work towards that IPO

wonder what the user graph looks like for SO
yeah I thought that guy was new
anyway...code review..is a totally niche corner, so you guys can basically do what yo want..non one wilkl care
you will be first to get shut down too
if you have flat user graphs..then defiitely

the public data dump suggests that SO signups are somewhat plateaued out at 1.5m / yr

and the "net"?

12:13 AM
I think the cost of shutting small sites down exceeds the cost savings

depends if there is manager
a
site costs nothing to run

it's not like the company pays a lot to keep the site running, it's basically a single webserver

well at 10 questions per week I shouild hope so

@OliverSchonrock I mean for all of the sites on Stack Exchange aside from Stack Overflow, you know?

but the real cost is in SW. How much does it cost to merge in the updates etc

12:14 AM
the cost is probably virtually nonexistent, because the software has been unified.

From my experience it doesn't quite work that way, unless they are more clever than me

there used to be a lot more cost associated with running the network, but they've unified the codebase there

but still the cost will be low

Stack Overflow runs on the same code as Code Review
basically, that is

yeah it's the "basically" which makes it "non-zero"
anyway..all mute

12:16 AM
there's some special cases for Stack Overflow around the SaaS thing as well as the Job platform
everything else is running off of runtime-configurable feature switches

my prediction..the IPO will never happen. The whole thing will go tits up. The VCs will be angry, but the community will be sold for a song and then it's a vaiable company. It should never have received VC funding....It's just a fancy forum..

I think you're vastly underestimating what the enterprise versions bring in as revenue
The company doesn't make the money based on users
but eh

That might be...but that's a "separate business" really....it might get spun out...still not worth the VC money which must be in the 10s of millions after 4 rounds...the public community os not moneytisable

@OliverSchonrock 68M

ouch
and they want 10x
righto

12:20 AM
Actually the public community is monetizable through ads
Ads alone pull in close to 30M pa in revenue

love to know what the ad rev is
never seen one

Apparently the current revenue is close to 70M$

oh wait ... i run uBlock origin
it's a dev community

you have an overconfident inference there...

what does that mean?

12:22 AM
there's millions of devs out there that don't use uBlock or similar tools
just because you (and probably most people you know) use something like that, it's not reasonable to infer that this applies to the visitor base of Stack Overflow at large

do they pay the moderators at the top?
sure, I agree

"moderators at the top"?

i dunno..there is probably someone (or 10) who works for SO and "manages the colunteer moderator community"

yea... 5 people

you know the person that fired Monica..or whoever that was

12:25 AM
~twitch

Anyway, it's been nice chatting. I think the idea of CR is great. I think the fomat is challenging, because it's hard to put "relevant amount of real code" in the space/time available, but it just about works...ish.
I think because it's hard, it is and probably will remain niche
and the "huge range of rules" and their enthusiastic enforcement (where it is feels like many of them were written because one question went wrong 5 years ago)...is an obstacle to growth. That's my oipnion based on my personal experience over the last 2 months. Sometimes it takes a "semi outsider to say that. So I am . Do with it what you will.

I would put it to you. At 10 questions per week and 20 modeators. it's a not site.

we're at ... 4 moderators.

I have personally interacted with more than that
at least they acted like moderators

everyone else is just normal users that were around for a while and got the ability to do some cleanup

from my POV
same difference
from a users POV
moderators set the culture
"active users" act as an amplifier
So anyway, It's late here. Thanks for listening. Maybe some of what I said makes sense to you. Maybe you will even discuss or do some of it.

If not, it's no skin off my nose.

I can write my own questions and the answers for them in a local file with emacs. Then I can invite a mate over for coffee.. Same traffic? ;-)

Have a good one.

Q: Find and replace a string in c/c++ without using standard library

@Mast @Mast
@Mast @mast Haven't understood your numbers. But this morning the "policy" of putting off new users continues: codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/236212/… 2 "incorrect" and "hostile" comments, by an experienced user/.moderator....another one bites the dust? I see this every day.

As this is basically working code, you might find better answers on CodeReviewgermi 41 secs ago

8:18 AM
@OliverSchonrock They aren't my numbers, I just provide the link to them.

@Mast sure. I meant "the numbers you provided". More importantly: "the other point"...?

As for your classification of the comments, if you disagree with the overall tone of comments on this site and have a bunch of examples, please take them to meta. On meta, policy is discussed and at times even modified.
Over here, a couple of people will read your concerns. On meta, a much bigger portion of the community will.
I'd urge you to keep the question constructive.

I am not on a crusade. If people are not interested in having "no users", then I am not going to convince anyone. TBH the reactions I have had so far are that " no we don't care about having no users, because we are implementing the policy". I have tried many "styles" of presenting this "argument". None have drawn a receptive response. If there is no fundamental interest in growing the community from a low base, then I am wasting my breath.

I understand how the SE network can feel hard to fit-in as a new user. It's not a forum. It's Q&A. And that means having guidelines and a policy that's more strict. Even if that has unintended consequences, since the alternative may as well be worse. Of-course, if you know a good middle-road, please share. We might learn something.

The question is: "are you open to learning"?

8:25 AM
That, of-course, completely depends on what you're offering. If none of it is constructive, I'd be wasting my effort just like you feel you're wasting your breath.

Take that specific link above. The question is from a brand spanking new account. The code is competent, it compiles and works from what I can see. And the first comment is a) negative b) wrong. The "constructive" feedback I am giving is that "You should look to encourage new users", not "bark at them with poorly informed" comments. Is that constructive enough?

Which 'specific link above'?

The exchange on that question is very typical of what I have a) experienced myself and b) seen other new users experience.

There are a lot of links on my screen.

8:29 AM
@OliverSchonrock To properly review that question, we need additional information. For example, it's tagged both C++ and C, while it definitely looks it's C from a C++ background. So only should survive. The first comment indicates something along those lines. That's not negative, that's willing to help.
Not wrong either.
So no, I don't think your remarks about that comment are constructive. From my point of view, they're borderline harassment.

Wrong is the stdio.h comment...it's both negative and wrong
and yes there a question of clarity with C and C++
see my comment
where I try to demonstrate that I have a) made some effort to compile the code and the n ask for clarification

All that first comment by L.F. is requesting clarification, to improve the incoming answers.

whereas LF (and you) are concerned with the "policy of tagging", which is franbkly immaterial and can be addressed later?>
The stdio comment just a cheap point scoring shot

No, tags are not immaterial. They're used by the reviewers to shape their answers.

and you have failed to address it

8:31 AM
@OliverSchonrock No, it's an honest source of confusion.

reviewers will see it's C
it's so fundamental
if that user is confused about stdio and the OP's intent they should refrain from commenting

It should be clarified to make sure, otherwise the user may get wrong answers and nobody's happy.

I find this a lot: lots of knowledge about policy and (apparently) none about the subject matter
did you see my other comment
the question has been edited twice already

I have written more reviews than you, been around here longer than you, so the one without knowledge of what's going on is you. Can you stop with the accusations?

no-one has read the code yet

8:33 AM
I got work to do. Good day.

"i have been here longer than you": That reply is exactly the the issue. You have been modearting a site with no users longer than me, correct. That's the attitude which comes across. No acknowledgemeht that what is happening on that question is very poor. It's negative and wrong.

We at the Stack Overflow blog want to provide our community, as well as the larger programming community, with interesting articles about what life is like as a coder today. Whether that’s coverage of research on security vulnerabilities in Stack Overflow code examples, insights into what it really takes to be a full-stack engineer, or a look at the never-ending migration from Python 2 to 3, we hope the articles we publish are the ones that coders—hobbyists, beginners, or professionals—want to read.  …
