Ed note: This is a part of series where an author plays both sides of an issue, one of which is obviously terrible. Can you guess which is which?

Our industry needs to own up to something we’ve all known for a long time: whiteboard coding interviews suck. At best, they’re ineffective at measuring a candidate’s capacity and aptitude for the real day-to-day work of a developer, and at worst they’re an inhumane ritual that amounts to little more than fraternity hazing.

I have never, in over 20 years as a professional developer, had a single project that required me to stand at a whiteboard and impl …

@brug: HI! What are you working on these days?
I thought your "orbits" question was interesting and well done. I'm not a C# guy or I'd have taken a try at that one.

Hey @Edward ! I started picking up C#. I'm doing Advent of Code in it this year to get a little practice with it. On top of that I went back to school and am trying to get a degree in CS

Nice! Busy year for you, then.

My goal is to be able to push one button within the web browser and get the code downloaded, formatted and ready for compiling.
I'm very close, but still have some tweaks to do on the javascript portion.

is there a platform for code review? didnt find tag for that — victor 35 secs ago

@brug Nice! Have you a particular favorite area of CS that interests you?

@Edward I don't know. Most of it is interesting to me. I started with games but it doesn't have to be that. I just like making things. I like putting pieces together like a puzzle until eventually, you have a picture. I also like algorithms. My whole life I have always tried to do everything I do as efficiently as possible (I'm not always good at it but that's another story.) That's why I chose C++ when I first started learning to code.

@brug I love puzzles, too and also started with games. But that was in the late 1970's, so I've been at it for quite a while now.
I should probably be better at it than I am by now!
My first experience personally interacting with a computer was in 1969. There was a computer demonstration where you could play tic-tac-toe against a computer using an oscilloscope and light pen. I was fascinated and deeply hooked!
Fifty years later, and I still find it amazing and fascinating.
Do you have a career aim in mind or are you still exploring?
(and "both" is an acceptable answer!)

10:10 PM
@Edward Does everyone feel this way forever? It feels like a very common theme. As for my career, I don't know. I do enjoy games but I've heard a lot about that industry that is kinda a turn off and I'm not sure if I actually want to work in that culture. Otherwise, I just don't know. I would love to get a job writing code somewhere and start to get an idea of what I am getting into.
After all I'm not getting any younger.

@brug I don't know about feeling that way forever, or even continuously.
Some days I'm just annoyed!
I've never worked in the game industry, but I hear it's brutal.
My thing is embedded systems.
Your idea of just starting somewhere and figuring out how it really is, is smart. Good plan!

@Edward Thanks. To be honest people ask me that a lot and I never know how to answer. I just like writing code... It isn't that much more thought out than that. Embedded systems sounds fun but daunting... I'm not sure I've really accurately depicted it in my head though. ><

@Edward 50 years ago.. damn that's a long time

@brug I've seen your both your questions and answers here and you have nothing to worry about. You're already quite competent.
"Keep an open mind and try many things" is about all I have that might pass for "wisdom". :)
@skiwi Yep. I can't believe it myself sometimes!

I'm glad I got a job where we make an application with which you can create applications, giving a lot of generic problems to tackle
I still haven't quite found a similar system, I think DBase comes the closest of all..

10:19 PM
It comes up surprisingly frequently. Usually some lazy sod (like me!) says "hey, this is boring and repetitive -- let's automate it!"

@Edward Thanks! That means a lot! I pretty much learned how to code by reading through your answers and all of the others over in the tag

@brug Oh dear! I hope you had more competent guidance than that!
:0

><
Nope. The internet has been my only teacher ;]

wow!
I did a lot of self-study early in my career and then discovered "pockets of ignorance" -- stuff I thought I should have known but did not. I finished a degree and then discovered there are only more things I don't know diddly about but should. It's a never-ending battle, (but fun!)
I learned a lot, but there are even more things to know, so I guess I'm steadily losing ground!

I tried to do it around the turn of the millennium with HTMLGoodies. But there just wasn't enough information out there at the time and I didn't get very far. But then I started again a few years ago and between SO and CR it has been a lot easier to figure out.
Yes, the whole more you know the more you realize you don't know paradox.

10:26 PM
Yes, I rely on CR and SO very often, which is why I try to contribute something back when I can.

I feel like my whole life is an ever expanding understanding of just how ignorant I am.
@Edward Same. Even though I have often felt like my contributions are minimal. I give what I can.

If you haven't already read it, I would highly recommend Stroustrup's "The C++ Programming Language" book. Not only does it tell what you'd expect (how to use C++) but it's also interesting to see how the inventor of that language describes how to use it. I learned a lot from it.
@brug Benjamin Franklin once said "“Being ignorant is not so much a shame, as being unwilling to learn.”

Well I am definitely willing to learn
4
eager in fact.

Thinking about that I haven't contributed to CR for a long time
