We allow multiple emails in any email field (separated by semicolons) at work. So you can register with the email foo@example.com;bar@example.com.

We don't.
Also, that is just so broken :)

It makes our email validation (and consumption) code so much more painful.

RELOAD! There are 4816 unanswered questions (90.2569% answered)

@Hosch250 How so?

Remind me to submit this address to you: "very.(),:;<>[]\".VERY.\"very@\\ \"very\".unusual"@strange.example.com
Or this: "()<>[]:,;@\\\"!#$%&'-/=?^_`{}| ~.a"@example.org

12:01 AM
Go for it. If it fails on delivery it's not my fault.

:)

lol

But they are both valid emails.

I honestly gave up trying to force people to enter valid email addresses, so I let you enter anything that's *@*.*[;...], it keeps me sane and prevents complicated code from blocking legit emails.

For some values of "valid".

12:03 AM
Since our registration is human-performed, if you enter an invalid one we just ditch your data.
You can try to register with us all you want, but a human reviews it and I gave them checkboxes with a "Delete All" button.

FWIW, Windows Mail can't send to those addresses either :(
But that is literally a valid address.
They both pass the .NET email validator too :)

As they should. RFC 2822 pretty much defines Email addresses as an open format, where you can use anything if you escape it properly.
The problem is developers don't read the damn RFC.
So we end up with crap software with crap email support.

Or the RFC is too loose :P

I think it's perfectly fine.
Why do you need to constrain an email address further?
How do you intend to support foreign character sets if you constrain it further?

At work, because GifTango doesn't support them :P
They used to handle this stuff, but they changed their systems so we do.
We just discovered they did provide an API for email validation, so we are going to go that route.
Trying to think of a small project to work on.

12:09 AM
Then that's a problem with whatever GifTango is. FWIW I've never had issues with our email validation except in one case where an empty string got in, but that wasn't my fault either.

Preferably something with F# or Roslyn or something else where I can have fun and learn a lot.
Stepping back from RD temporarily. Need a broader horizon.

I have a situation where I'm creating a bunch of objects that may or may not be valid (it's based off user input). How do I handle this situation.
I've tried having a boolean check in a constructor that will early return if it's invalid, and then a check where i'm creating it that the object passed that point of creation. I've also changed it so that if it fails that check then it throws an exception. But i feel like im using exceptions for flow control in this case, so I'm not sure how to best handle this situation. Anyone got any ideas?

You could put a static method on the class to validate it.
Something like Foo.ValidateInput().
Heck, you could do bool Foo.TryCreate(out Foo) that returns a Foo if and only if the items are valid.
Assuming that's C#.

ooh
i kinda like that
how would I go about returning an error message string in that case (although i'd just ignore the error unless every object creation fails)
(if it fails)

Well, that's a little trickier.
I'd probably do bool Foo.Validate(out string), or maybe (bool, string) Foo.Validate() (C# 7 value tuple).
Or maybe construct a new object to return: { bool success; string message; Foo object }

oka ythanks

BTW, are you using C#?

12:43 AM
i will give this a go
nope

@SimonForsberg Usually Debug in Production gives you really poor performance, in my experience.

@SimonForsberg Clone it to a test server, run both original and Debug versions, see how it goes.
But yea, what Mr. Brown says, last I checked running debug in production is a bad idea. I know in Python it can deliver a speed hit with a factor 5-40x. Basically, you cripple your program.

Our .NET stuff goes to about 10x execution time in debug.
I can't imagine the JVM being too much better than that.

@SimonForsberg Is there a particular issue that's going on?
I wonder if your company wouldn't benefit from a setup like we have: I can literally tell a server to start randomly dropping packets, connections, etc. to stress-test it.

And once again, Linq becomes the limiting factor of performance.

@Hosch250 Lucky. We don't have access to LINQ. :P

I just changed a select into a foreach and dropped the time from 2500 ms to 70 ms...
Now the limiting factor is the SQL query.
Which is horribly slow because some web dev used inheritance in the EF structure...
Which means we have half a dozen unnecessary joins.

4:18 PM
Specify the .Include navigations.
Those reduce the join counts and cost.

I turned it into an SP.

SQL cannot optimize EF joins away like normal ones because EF actually asks for the data.
Usually, if you do SELECT id FROM table LEFT JOIN otherTableNotUsed ON col = id (et. al.) SQL will eliminate the join entirely.

Oh wait, I made a mistake.
I forgot to copy one of the calculations over.
So, the foreach may not be that much faster.
I'm only pulling the data that I need.
But it literally adds about 1.5 seconds to add one field because we need to join 3 tables to get it...
Two fields, that is.

Depending on joins you can probably index properly and optimize that out.

Because we need data from the {base class} and data from the {inherited class} and data from {class referenced in inherited class}
IIRC, we already have indexes on all our IDGUIDs.

4:23 PM
I mean with Entity Framework it sucks more, but if you join through the intermediate table, and only need it for the join, SQL can be told to optimize that to only use the index.

I'm doing inner join Table t on t.IDGUID = referenceTable.TableID
I just do that a couple of times.
Is there a more optimal way?

That's fine, but do you pull t.AnythingElse?

No.

I.e. do you SELECT * FROM a [LEFT/INNER] JOIN b ON a.bID = b.Id [LEFT/INNER] JOIN c ON b.cID = c.Id? Or do you call explicit columns out?

I'm calling explicit columns.

4:26 PM
If you call explicit columns out, put an index on b.Id and b.cID (from my example).

base.Foo, base.Bar, referenced.Fizz

Yeah, so index base.Bar.PrimaryKey and base.Bar.FizzForeignKey (double-column index), that should eliminate any issues in the table.

OK.

If you look at the query plan, you'll see a TABLE SCAN probably, which is usually bad, or a ROW LOOKUP, also bad.
(Without a plan I can only speculate, but chances are that'll give you far more performance.)
I always make an index on my PK + all FK's for this reason.
Literally 90% of the joins in my data use indexes only.

No, just index scan.
Whatever. It's running in 1 ms DB side. Must be the network is the limiting factor.

4:29 PM
Is it an index scan with ROW LOOKUP, or just an index scan?

Just an index scan.

Then that's as optimal as your SQL gets, sadly.

It's not a problem, I guess.
It's the returning 145 rows that's a problem, it seems.

Paginate that stuff man lol

Can't.
We load it all into a humongous carousel.
Which can be filtered.
I'm allowed to do anything I like except change the way it works, pretty much.

4:36 PM
I'm currently optimizing a boatload of VB.NET that does things like If control.Checked = "True" Then, yes, the " around True is really there.

Wow.
Who wrote it? A JS guy?

Nah, a guy who previously contracted through us, and recently (last week) died of cancer.

Too bad that he died.

He was a very smart person, but most of this was written in an age where there wasn't a lot of documentation.
Some of this VB.NET dates back to 2004-5.

Oh, fun.

4:39 PM
And it was all based on a system that dates back even further.

Eh, at least he didn't use VBA.
Put Option Strict on that. See what happens :)

And yeah, it's a shame he passed. He was a good friend, and I really liked working with him (when I had the chance).

@202_accepted Is it possible to select a list alongside some other data in SQL?
I need something like int, string, string, list<guid>
But SQL doesn't like anything I'm trying, so I have to do a zillion side queries.
It has an index and all, but it seems that querying and getting a couple guids takes a couple milliseconds each query. I'd like to get it down into one query, preferably merged into my existing one.

The typical way to do that is to LEFT JOIN, then in your code group things as appropriate.

Back in the old days, @Malachi used to run out of stars almost daily!

This sounds a bit ... meh. Any alternatives? => "I also have a deep interest in cyber security field."

Writing a resume?
Don't say you have an interest, say you've done research/worked in it.

@Hosch250 yup, I'm trying to rephrase a few words here and there

Q: Get the input-data in an universal way

Ciolte AlinThe problem is very classic. The first value in a value tells you how many records are available to read from the next rows. The problem is data that is in the records. I have to read a name(char[])and a number(int). Then I have to make transactions between the names. For example I get name1 name2...

@MrGrj I would add some specific technologies/scenarios/projects you've worked with, cyber security is a pretty broad term

@MrGrj What section are you putting that in?
If you can, drop it in experiences and reword:
> Understanding of Cyber Security technologies and principles (encryption, hashing);
Always be brief, never say "interest", and always make it relevant. :)

Q: Implementing grammar rules in a parser written in Java

user140908I'm studying how to create a language. I've created the Lexer (tokenizer). Now I want to understand which is the better way to parse my list of tokens. I thought to create a class for each rule I have in my language and I thought to create a Rule interface. I don't know where and how to check if...

not sure what your Q is. If you're asking for code Review, you should use the flag link at the bottom of your Q and ask a moderator to move it to codereview.stackexchange.com . The find looks reasonable. If you're getting errors with it, then post more details so people can replicate your problem. Good luck. — shellter 38 secs ago

It’s just a summary field
In my cv
It’s not in the skills section
It’s just to point out that I don’t have any real experience with it but I understand and like the concepts within that field

Then don't talk about it.
Either you know it, or you don't.
So, on a resume, you can either list it as experience, study, or not at all.

@MatthewWhited this question would be off-topic for CR: "Questions should not contain purely generic, hypothetical code". Please see What types of questions should I avoid asking?. In the future, please choose a more appropriate reason for closing a question like too broad, etc. - see the section What you should not do in this answer to A guide to Code Review for Stack Overflow usersSam Onela 19 secs ago

unrelated webdev question: I have a website that is deployed on a docker container in a special subnet
the site only runs http because it's dev and we don't really have a reasonable way to get an https cert aside from asking "the guy maintaining the server"
now to make the site reachable from the far interwebs, "the guy", let's call him Tom, pushed a redirect from an https-domain onto the site
the site uses some AJAX requests, of which only the GET requests run into "mixed content1" errors.
so far so good. Now I say that we need to push the webapp to https, and Tom says that something in the JS is wrong and it's our fault that the AJAX-request goes into http

@Duga I know that post is on-hold ... the edit doesn't really appear to make it any less off-topic... the spacing changes look to deviate quite a bit from the original code...
@Duga Before I had privileges to edit without approval, I had run code through a beautifier (not thinking about how it would change more than indentation) and it was rejected for reasons like space deviation

@Duga @SamOnela Rolled it back, indentation in questions is reviewable and should not be edited like this.
Honestly, the entire question should be slung into oblivion.

Q: Modifying large csv file with Python

AverellI need to update some (less than 10) fields on some rows in a rather large (3GB+) csv file with about 300 fields. The problem with my file is inconsistency in quoting - some text fields (about 20) are quoted, some are not. If I read the file with read_csv, then write with to_csv, then the quotin...
