Happy new year!

@Mast Should we post the next round for these? meta.codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/7102/…
Should we do the top 5, or should we do all the ones over +10?
Especially since there is a big drop-off at that level?

Jamalizer one will be pretty difficult to compile

That one doesn't make the cut either way.

Just got the Trendsetter secret hat on CR, what is that one about?

> Do Animals Use Drugs In The Wild?

Ah ok

@skiwi Not the way they did in "Bambi", giving him drugs to make the bleeding stop, etc...
At least, not usually.

@Hosch250 Ask @janos since he posed the question.
@Hosch250 Treebark works like aspirine though.
And a lot of animals eat treebark.

Depends which tree.
And most animals, excluding porcupines, only eat treebark when there is nothing better available.

12:33 AM

@skiwi 4/10, not Egyptian enough.

@Mast I was going to say Too Catty.

This is how you do a proper Egyptian:
Not sure whether they make those in black.

Now that is a hideous cat.

@Hosch250 One of the only cat races that looks even worse when they're young.

12:35 AM
Depends on whether you like cats or not.
But I can believe you on that one.

Q: What happens if you refuse both pills?

Cake_BadgerWould Morpheus have had to force Neo to swallow the blue pill if Neo had refused the both of them?

What if you just plain can't take pills without choking?

@Hosch250 Wow, that's a great question.

@Mast A cat pretending to be a squirrel?
That almost looks like they photoshopped a cat head onto a squirrel body.

@Hosch250 Not sure.
Those comments got out of hand quickly though.

@Hosch250 That cat looks sooo cute, but nothing like an ordinary cat

@skiwi Only if you adore cats, which I don't.

And what if you snort both of them? — TRiG 4 hours ago
@Hosch250 Something tells me you're more of a Dog guy.

@Hosch250 I have quite some issues with pills, I think other ones usually

So I'll just request some of those in The Matrix
@Mast WTF

12:41 AM
Ultimate camouflage.

We need a video of cat animals instead of those mouth photoshopped into cats

@skiwi If you're looking for a fun ride, hit YouTube for some Cyriak.

@skiwi Wow.
Not even cute.
Reminds me though.

None of these are. Go take them to the Nth.

12:46 AM
@Hosch250 If anyone feels like migrating, fine with me. But there's exactly 0% site business going on.

@Mast He still looks cute

There's a big difference between site business and eyesores.

@skiwi It's the eyes and the ears.

Yeah this might need to be migrated :p

At the affectionate stage of being drunk?

I have several versions of the types: Config, PIn, St, and a function called runOneTest. The code using the types and the function is the same. The type signature for runOneTest will always be runOneTest :: Config -> Signal TestResult I want to be able to reuse all the other code that calls the runOneTest function. I posted about this on CodeReview yesterday with no results yet. [codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/151278/…LambdaScientist 5 secs ago

@Hosch250 Nah not drunk at all

Oh. I thought you said you were going to the pub.

2:58 AM
Yeah we haven't left yet, just chilling at his place

Oh.

Listening to old vinyl records

I've heard that vinyls had better sound quality than CD's, at least before they faded.
Is that true?

No

I figured not.
Talking about old vinyls, have you heard John McCormack? He's one of the best tenors ever.

3:00 AM
It does sound "different" because of the medium, and the sound quality can be real good
Most records and record players don't sound nearly as good as digital

I heard it captured all the wavelengths and subtones, while CD's leave some of them out.

Back when CDs first came out that was true, old CD technology was not very good
Today's digital recording technology is so good though in comparison
CDs are 44.1 kHz and 16 bit, but most professional recordings are done at a much higher frequency and bit rate
And just get re-encoded when put to CD

Q: php public key chunked encryption with c# method to decrypt

Kraang PrimeI have written a method in PHP which breaks up larger than the byte size of the key of the certificate used to encrypt, and a method in c# which will decrypt said chunks using the corresponding private key. What I would like to be reviewed is the C# decrypt() function to improve the performance...

Someday they'll be better.

CDs won't get better due to the hard-coded freq and bit rate, but it's high enough to where the difference between CD and higher def audio is barely audible on most speakers
If you buy a really expensive sound system then you can hear the difference, and then and only then does vinyl actually sound better, if the record is in good shape
(which is rarely the case)

3:09 AM
Then they'll come out with a new encoding and call it something else.
I can just see the ads: "Sounds twice as good as normal CDs!"

They tried that already with Audio DVD but it didn't catch on
CDs already sound really good

The new version probably won't be available on disk.
Or can MP3 already have any frequency and bitrate?
If that's the case, they'll probably just stop shrinking them as networks get faster and memory gets cheaper.

MP3 is a really old encoding, I think it can but rarely does

My checkers game is currently in a broken state because I worked on my library.
A little bit more work in my library, then a lot of work on the UI, and I'll be ready for a beta, of a sorts.

Newer encodings lile MPEG 4 (including AAC files) are much better than MP3

3:15 AM
What about .wav?
I always rip my CD's as .wav's because it says it is lossless.

WAV is raw PCM, it sounds good but it makes flr hube files.
MP3 at the max bit rate sounds just as good [320 kbps) with much smaller files
I usually do 192 kbps which sounds exactly as good on most speakers
*for huge files

Hey, I have 8 GB of RAM and 750 GB of HDD.
I don't have an issue with huge files.
I have 520 GB free of 668 GB available (after formatting).

Just realized my typos
WAV/AIFF files are just wasteful
If you have iTunes (or an encoder) encode all that to AAC, otherwise 192 kbps MP3. I promise you won't be able to tell the difference

I have excellent speakers, and good ears.

Barring placebo effect, which a lot of people have wrt sound quality

3:30 AM
I have Beat speakers. They are as good as our old Sony CD player.
Only speakers better in the house are the Bose. HP doesn't skimp on their speakers.
Although, you are probably right.

@Hosch250 I'm pretty sure you don't have "excellent" speakers unless you paid upwards of $5000 for them

@Phrancis We have different definitions of "excellent", obviously.
Well, I'm just plain too lazy. I've got a couple hundred tracks I'd need to convert.
I'd have to upload them all to a website I know of to convert them (or figure out how to use ffmpeg).

@Hosch250 iTunes is great for encoding if you have it. Otherwise there's a small program called CDex that I've used for years that can encode to all sorts of formats locally

I don't care.

essentially, this is what i am trying to improve the performance of by decrypting multiple blocks at the same time > codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/151376/…Kraang Prime 16 secs ago

If Janos is right, you spend the first day of the year chilling your heels in the hoosegow, you'll chill your heels there the whole year.

Nope, i am using public key encryption, private key decryption. Pretty hard code. Since it doesn't support chunks larger than the byte size of the key (eg 4096 key = 512 bytes), the data must be encrypted in chunks (see the php portion), and hence, must be decrypted in chunks. The problem is doing this sequentially is slower than I would like. (about 3 seconds for the sample posted on code review) — Kraang Prime 52 secs ago
