@Heslacher uh oh
That seems like a bad idea, imo

Ooooohhh I like that!!

No, its a good idea. They shaped their scope and made a complete new make up. Until now everybody who read "oh, programmers" thought that this would be the place to post each programming question´ how off topic they would be didn't matter.

Actually wait. Imo it looks and feels better, so yea, nice.
@Heslacher yeah Ikno, my biggest concern was/is same with any name change: seo issues and slight user loss due to that

Happy to see them have a fresh(ish) start, it's sad that the site had become kind of stale, but I can kind of see why
Honestly I'd like to see more cross-pollination between CR and SE Software Engineering
Damn, they have the same acronym as Stack Exchange :\

Can anyone tell me, what will happens, when a static synchronized method is called from 2 different threads in Java?
Does it blocks the second call to wait till first one finishes?
Because here the static members aren't bound to instances, rather to the class
any inputs from any of you will be appreaciated :)

@Malachi I believe 99.99% people don't understand any answer that goes beyond the basic stuff, if you look at the upvotes then the most trivial questions and answers about naming conventions and parameter checking recieve the most votes

Code Review is the best place for this question. Otherwise, your code does solve Newton's Method correctly. There are obvious cases where Newton's Method will fail and that is inescapable for any implementation of the algorithm. — rayryeng 52 secs ago
Seems reasonable enough. I would just generate the deck with a simple list comprehension and then sample from it in a separate line. Since this code works, it probably belongs at code review rather than here. — John Coleman 54 secs ago
Don't worry about it. I'd much rather see readable code in the wrong place than unreadable code in the right place. Here is the link to code review: codereview.stackexchange.com A final remark: you probably want flop = random_cards[4:7] rather than flop = [random_cards[4:7]. A slice is already a list, do you really want a list inside a list? — John Coleman 36 secs ago

And when you have done everything I might convert it to Java/Groovy and steal use it in Brainduck.

Q: Trying to port my interactive ncurses game of life implementation from C to python

TURNBOMBI have a single out of range bug when trying to iterate over the grid to count neighbor cells. It's almost done, but I've spent a couple hours on this one bug already. I'm determined to deal with the rest of them if any after this. lol. Python and C code follows. Requires the blessed python3 libr...

@Mat'sMug My open tabs on the other hand are a doubly linked list

@Phrancis Well... maybe. Not quite how they use the memory though.

@Phrancis it's just a little state machine really

Ah OK
Interesting article I saw someone posted on SoftEng chat
Quick general question... for some application or website to update its displayed data on-the-fly, you need an asynchronous process for fetching the data right?

@Phrancis Pretty much, unless you want to automatically reload the page every X seconds

@skiwi That sounds like a terrible idea :D

It's not the best idea indeed

Q: Using Node.JS, how do I read a JSON object into (server) memory?

Matthew Patrick CashattBackground I am doing some experimentation with Node.js and would like to read a JSON object, either from a text file or a .js file (which is better??) into memory so that I can access that object quickly from code. I realize that there are things like Mongo, Alfred, etc out there, but that is ...

Probably going to end up doing something similar to that

Q: Displaying live 12 hour time in html - no date, with AM and PM

Jael PerezThe closet thing I could find was Displaying current date and time using JavaScript and HTML time tag - I just have a few questions in regard to customizing it. I have no experience in coding so all help is very much appreciated. I'd like only the time to be displayed, no date. As in "1:07PM" (w...

@CaptainObvious Was thinking for a moment that it would be without Javascript, then that would be a challenge

There is nothing wrong technically with omitting parenthesis, it's a matter of opinion. You might have better luck with the rest of your question on codereview.stackexchange.com. — meagar ♦ 32 secs ago
Oh, I've never heard about codereview site! Thank you, I will try my luck there. — Karel Poláček 32 secs ago

Is it acceptable to modify a loop from within itself if all I do is return; after that?

11:26 PM
@JoshuaLamusga Could you provide some code to show how you mean?

Sure, something like
for (int i = 0; i < someContainerSize; i++) {
   if (i == 50) {
      someContainerSize.RemoveAt(i);
      return;
   }
}
That's just a rigid example, of course. My code doesn't really remove something at a fixed and known index.

@JoshuaLamusga Well... I don't see what would be wrong with that.
Even though it could perhaps be done in other ways...

@SimonForsberg Alright. My usual method is to "cue" all the indices or values to delete, then remove them after the for-loop. Alternatively, I can reverse the for loop to start at the container size and count to 0, then increment i when I remove something at position i while traversing the loop.

Anyway, I thought maybe it's bad for maintenance reasons. At least, I think I should comment not to continue; the loop or anything since it's delicate code.

Q: Invert-range operation in a circular vector

nbroI implemented a invert-range operation in a (logical) circular vector. A circular vector is a vector without a logical starting and ending object, or, equivalently, the successive element of the element at the last index of the vector is the element at index 0 (similarly for the previous element)...

Q: How to well format ruby code; functions without parameters and others

Karel PoláčekWhat I have Hello, I am a bit advanced PHP developer, but now I went to college and we are learning Ruby there. We got first homework and I did it. But I wanna make great code - so I looked for standarts and found pretty much nothing. I only realized, that variables aren't name with cameCase but...
