before you ask: yes, this is my mug

@Barry I only just realised there was a costume there. Best profile pic.

Zak
@SimonForsberg I would respectfully disagree with your decision. What, exactly, is the difference between a piece of code with 10 different functions that all do different things. And the ten functions themselves without the minimal overhead?

@Barry It's really cute! :p
@Mat'sMug lol

Wow, so the entire discussion get's swept under the rug.
Well that's nice, I'll remember that for the future.

@EBrown You mean the one that took place in meta? Or the one where you try to point out the world is against you?

6:02 PM
@TopinFrassi Both.

@Mat'sMug isn't that the stock win7 one?

@EBrown I suggest you gather your thoughts about exactly how it has been (or is) misinterpreted, write them down in a structured way, and post them on meta.

In fact, it seems like Code Review has become a place where we all gang up on someone (new or otherwise).

@enderland Win7 comes with a free koala!?

@SuperBiasedMan google.com/…

6:02 PM
@EBrown Look on the bright side: If you repost it as multiple questions, which after all is just a lot of copy and paste, I can repost my answer using copy and paste, and we can both get more reputation! :-)

@EBrown I think it just needs one more re-open vote.

first image result

Three votes to re-open a question, right?

@EBrown It seems like you're wrong.

@EthanBierlein I think it's five.

Moderator Recommendation: Step back, calm down, breathe.
2

@EthanBierlein Considering the meta, it should be re-closed after. That's pointless

@EBrown Huh. I could've sworn that it was 3.
@TopinFrassi Well, I don't care about the consensus on meta at this point.

It's 5 for close and 5 for reopen

@TopinFrassi Really? Should I go through all the chat logs and find all the instances where users here post a question that is gray, say "needs CV" and then it get's hammered?
Because that's the pattern here.

@EthanBierlein Why not? What do you care about then?

6:04 PM
What's going on?

@SimonForsberg Because it's a perfectly legitimate question, and I disagree with the consensus on meta. I care that it gets re-opened.

@EthanBierlein Well that's too bad for you, because that site works on consensus. If you can't understand that we've got a problem
2

I'll just make five new questions, and @holroy can re-answer them and get even more rep. (Since that's what everyone wants done.)

@Zak I can give an argument for that, but right now I am more wanting to calm this discussion down. Please remind me again tomorrow if I still have not answered that.

@EBrown That's not ganging up on anyone. It's applying what we think is right to a question. We've had this discussion before.

6:05 PM
I mean, if we're really being open to discussion, it'd be better to make one new question, have holroy post responses to it, then apply his responses to your next question and post the new question, etc.

@EBrown I do believe @Barry is not targeting you, but rather aiming for raising the qualitity of question in general.

We're not raising the quality of anything.

All we're doing is substituting one problem for another.

This is not a solution to post five new questions like this, we had a meta question about this and the answer if I remember correctly is to take the time to let review come in, enhance your code and then post again

6:06 PM
There's not one thing in the question that's "low-quality".

Zak
@SimonForsberg Sure. It seems like my personal view of where the line should be, and the community consensus have significant differences, so I'd definitely like to reconcile the two.
Also, IMO. There should probably be a proper meta, one not about any specific question, discussing how we interpret "Too broad" as a community.

exactly
like, "What is 'too broad' exactly?"

@Zak Basically yes. There is harm in a perfectly good question being too broad, and we need to establish what it is.

@EthanBierlein To me the question is not low-quality as I've participated in the discussion here on chat leading up to the question. However, it does consist of a lot of code, which seemingly is unrelated besides being multiple answers to different Project Euler questions. The uniting fact of the question, is the beginner aspect which could be focused even more.

and then we come with a consensus like a bunch of grownups, and stick a on that meta, and move on
4

6:08 PM
@Mat'sMug TS

@Zak I would vote to close as being too broad, discussing about what is too broad is well... too broad (I'm trying to be funny here btw ) :D

You know, even if the minority fights with votes, that is a game two can play, and the majority wins anyway.
Just be civilized about it.

user41796
@Marc-Andre Way too meta there... :-P

@Marc-Andre lol (There, it seems it worked. :p)

Zak
Cool. Well, I'll be back tomorrow when things have hopefully cooled down a bit.

6:09 PM
This has been far from civilized from the beginning.

3 reopen votes!

Well, I wasn't there in the beginning, and it can start being civilized now.

@EthanBierlein It'll get hammered back to closed.

Where is the post in question, anyway.

The mods have to respect the meta.

Q: Project Euler Problems #1-#5

EBrownSince I've been playing with F#, I decided to try my hand at implementing some of the Project Euler problems, and I've been having a blast doing it. (f#-is-fun) So, I'm going to list all the Project Euler problems I solved to make things pretty clear: Project Euler Problem 1: Multiples of 3 ...

6:11 PM
@EBrown not with my hammer. but if a majority of people deem it too broad, it's possible it gets re-closed as such.

OK, I agree it should probably be five questions.

@Mat'sMug I'm pretty sure Simon will do it.

Zak
@EBrown I agree with you here (and, in fact, on most of the issues you tend to bring up) but maybe, just maybe, how you approach disagreement and conflict is a contributing factor in how arguments tend to devolve when you're involved.

I don't think it is worth a flamewar either way.

He agrees with the consensus.

6:12 PM
If I were you, I would have only posted one or two before doing the rest, anyway.

@Hosch250 Why?

So I wouldn't write three other solutions the wrong way first?
2

Each problem introduces a different aspect of F#.

I'm not going to vote either way.

All I would have done, by making it 5 problems, is extend the lifetime over which I was incorrect.

Zak
6:14 PM
I'll just leave this here too.

Q: Project Euler #1-3 in VBA

ZakSelf explanatory, and all the functions contain descriptions of their specific problem statements. Since this is project Euler, I would be particularly interested in any analysis of the functions' computational efficiency. Option Explicit Public Function ProjectEuler1() As Long '/ Pro...

@TopinFrassi I'm glad it did ;)

@EBrown Why would that be so? Wouldn't you apply what you learned from question 1 before asking question 3?

@200_success Yes, but some of the aspects of question 3 aren't covered by 1 or 2.

@Zak Are you looking to get all your questions closed? :p

So, part (and probably all) of question 3 would be less-than-ideal.

6:15 PM
@EBrown nope, this one I have no plans on hammering anywhere.

You are not being singled out. @Barry has raised a fine question. We're discussing how to make the site better. Just relax. Things will turn out fine.

@200_success Really? Because it sure looks that way.

user41796
@SimonForsberg To be fair, it's worth stating that most mods won't take action on a post when there are signs of active community moderation taking place. Our role as mods is to let the community handle as much as is reasonably possible of the site mechanics.

My question gets everyone up in arms, but (at least 2) previous ones don't?

Only because it was noticed first with your questions.

6:17 PM
What makes you think everyone is up in arms?
No, this is not the first instance of an omnibus question.

@200_success I suppose "up-in-arms" may be wrong, but it started a (very) lengthy discussion on the issue.

Okay can we please get a cooldown on everybody involved??

The egregious cases have already been dealt with.

Zak
@TopinFrassi More of show of solidarity and respectful disagreement. I think that's a perfectly concise, scoped, On-Topic question. With valuable answers. Which is a net-positive for the community at large. Yet, by the standards currently under discussion, is apparently Too-Broad.
Call it argument by counter-example.

I just read back through transcript and this doesn't seem to be heading anywhere

6:18 PM
Nothing wrong with lengthy. Just relax.

@200_success Really? Two of them have been, who's going to go through all the other questions and filter them?

@Vogel612 I think this one helped a bit at least:

7 mins ago, by Simon Forsberg
Moderator Recommendation: Step back, calm down, breathe.

meh...

@Zak I was just trying to make a joke about it :p But I understand why you're doing it

Probably, yes... Then again I see some grave misconceptions about the concept of "VTC" in here

6:19 PM
@Vogel612 No, I have no plans on suspending anyone from chat, if that's what you're suggesting.

no I'm suggesting to either move this into a room where we don't have 20 pages of transcript intermingled with Duga and programmers scope and Capt. O posts

If everyone who has ever had their question criticized reacted that defensively, this site would be a drama theater.
4

or getting this into a proper meta-answer..

@200_success /s/criticized/obliterated/

Zak
@Vogel612 I think that should probably wait a bit.

6:20 PM
"Obliterated"? In what way?

Zak
enough for this to calm down anyway.

It wasn't deleted, just closed.

@EBrown you're trying to put yourself into the role of the victim
tip: you aren't.

@Vogel612 I pretty much am.
My question starts this whole issue, because what, random chance?
The title?

Random chance?

6:21 PM
Because someone happened to tumble on it and post on meta. Why would this be related to you?

because someone noticed it and thought, "hmm, interesting"

no because it was a question with 5 questions inside and someone VTC'd it, which prompted you to go on a spree of depicting yourself as the victim of "ganging up" and "obliteration"

Exactly. Maybe they didn't notice the others.

@TopinFrassi We've already seen (at least two) examples of posts that occurred long before this one that had the same issue.
And yet, where was the discussion then?

because "VTCing a question is an insult to everyone involved"

6:22 PM
@Vogel612 You misquoted that.

@EBrown because nobody made an issue about it

@Vogel612 That ^

@Vogel612 Right, but why was mine an issue, all-of-a-sudden?

the problem is not the quality of the question. The problem is the scope
that's two mostly disjoint things

Well, on a slightly different note, let's take a look at my first question.

6:23 PM
there's some overlap. Crap questions are statistically more often off-topic

@EBrown that's how SE works. sometimes scope of sites gets refined via meta. It normally gets refined because people notice things and ask, and the community defines them. That's... very common across SE - no site ever starts with a perfectly defined scope that can be never changed
3

but in essence these two are different

I think I had 3-4 solutions to the producer/consumer problem.

Zak
@EBrown Problem because you would not shut up about it. Now, that may have been justified (debatable). It may have been a net positive in sparking a conversation. But let's be clear, it blew up on your question because you blew it up.

Well I'm done with this.

6:24 PM
@EBrown We cannot travel back in time to change the past. May I suggest that we focus on the present?

You guys want to leave it closed, leave it closed.
I personally DGAF anymore.

I heard that one before...

That's not even a final decision. Why are you so upset?

user41796

Moderator Recommendation: Step back, calm down, breathe.

@200_success Because I'm tired of sitting here and arguing about something that just has no purpose anymore.

6:25 PM
then don't?

@Zak Please you too, breathe, step back, calm down, be careful with your words.

So here's the answer: stop.

You don't need to argue. That's what we are trying to tell you.

If rolfl was mod, the room would probably be locked by now. Calm down, everyone.
8

user41796
@Hosch250 That always remains an option with at least four or five mods currently in the room. :-D

6:26 PM
@GlenH7 I'd personally also be okay with a timeout :)

@Hosch250 I have considered it, doing my best to avoid it.

There are so many mods around here suddenly lol.

Zak
@GlenH7 I make it at least 6

user41796
@Zak Oddly enough, your name doesn't show up as blue

@TopinFrassi blame the guy who asked for P.SE people to talk about their site scope from this morning :P

6:27 PM
@Zak I say 10.

there's always more :D

@Hosch250 spilled my coffee over that one

user41796
@Mat'sMug coffee abuse!

@enderland That's @Zak's fault!!!! Grab the pitchforks! :p
@Mat'sMug Man, poor coffee...

Zak
@GlenH7 @GlenH7 @SimonForsberg @200_success @enderland @ArtOfCode @Mat'sMug that's 6

@syb0rg Nope, just a discussion that's being given nudges in the right direction to keep it healthy and constructive

@Zak There are your other four.

Zak
@syb0rg For all the clamour, I'd just like to point out that this debate has been heated for over an hour and it's still a (just about) civil discussion.

That's why the chat count when to ~100 in the two minutes I was away studying Calc
Make sense

crap, 1:30PM, I need to eat!

@Hosch250 I'd not count her as Mod... employees are different :D

She has a diamond, so she can lock the room.

user41796
6:30 PM
@Vogel612 True, because bluefeet can enact a network wide suspension....

She could probably completely delete the room.

that's a mod thing I think.

@Hosch250 I can do that too.

Oh.

@Hosch250 She could delete the universe

6:32 PM
when Mos Eisley blew up it was also deleted by a SFF mod
If I understand the meta over there correctly..

bluefeet could probably get any records of this room's existence erased, is that good enough?

Once you have it working. You should ask for a code review here: codereview.stackexchange.comLoki Astari 34 secs ago

@ArtOfCode wayback machine!

user41796
@ArtOfCode Does that mean we'd cease to exist?

@Hosch250 I feel it's like in a movie where the hero do something dumb/regretful, there is always someone saying : remember your sage mentor (normally dead at that point), he would be ashamed of you. Then the hero take a moment to introspect and think about his actions.

6:33 PM
Dang, why so many mods in here?
Not like I'm against it, just curious

@syb0rg flags and stuff...

4 mins ago, by GlenH7
@syb0rg Nope, just a discussion that's being given nudges in the right direction to keep it healthy and constructive

@ArtOfCode Is that a threat?

@syb0rg We were discussing programmers scope, and a lot of them are regulars.
I can think of at least 7 that are regular.

@EthanBierlein Not unless she says it :)

6:34 PM
The only CR mod I don't see is Janos.

@Marc-Andre hey that's the scene where Simba collapses and the leaves fly back to Rafiki right?

@EthanBierlein We're talking about employee powers, I don't see how this comes close to a threat

@EBrown did you see my update on the answer? I found a way to use Seq.reduce and avoid the mutable variable.

@Hosch250 He's busy editing question

@holroy No, looking now./

@Marc-Andre TS

@Mat'sMug I never really liked the lion king that much. But.. maybe I should check it again. :p

@Mat'sMug It's one of those moment yeah ;)

Just one request guys, don't get the room blown up while I study for my test; I need somewhere to come back to after I fail

@EBrown I don't quite understand what's happening with the timing issues, as version v3a and v3b is actually the same, but the timing differs. And redoing them more times also changes the timings. Don't know if that is due to repl.it acting up, or if I made some silly mistake somewhere. But the variant without the mutable is there at least!

@syb0rg There's probably a bar not too far from where you are. :p
2
But things seems to be calm now

6:37 PM
@TopinFrassi You mean a bar to blow up?

@holroy I think that's due to memoization.

Or to calm down in?

Oh cool another mod.

@EBrown I haven't asked for memoization. Do I get that by default?

@Vogel612 Yeah! I brought muffins!
offers muffins

6:37 PM
@KitZ.Fox Damn it where's the robot food

@holroy Maybe, I have no idea.

@holroy lol. I mean, A bar where to fall back if he fails his test

this amuses me since many of the public chat rooms I'm in have a ridiculous percentage of moderators to begin with. so I'm always surprised about "ooh a mod" sentiment :P

user41796
@KitZ.Fox I'll take a blueberry or lemon-poppyseed, please

@KitZ.Fox I want muffins!

6:37 PM

@KitZ.Fox Apple and cranberries plz

@syb0rg Oh, this one has silicates and is gluten-free.

@Mat'sMug failing that, baz?

@holroy @EthanBierlein and I are in another room for F# if you want to join.

Damn why is this query so slow

Baz and I go way back.

I'd really take a muffin

I've only got cranberry and pumpkin.

@Phrancis I heard there is a good site for questions like that, you might try codereview.stackexchange.com ;)

@enderland Nah, it seems like they close everything. :p

They'll probably be better at it.

I'm scared to post anything on dba or serverfault

@KitZ.Fox Is that a real thing?

6:41 PM
@Phrancis probably because you abuse a String as a status identifier??

@enderland All my Database Administrators posts have >= 10 score.

It's gotta be the damned table, it's not like it's (normally) a very expensive query

@TopinFrassi Is now. Until I ate it.

And my one Server Fault post has 0.

@Phrancis Is it sorted/indexed?

6:41 PM
@KitZ.Fox I should try that one day, it sounds delicious

@KitZ.Fox Good question, I guess I better check

oh dear... a salutation...

Though I suppose I can see why they kept it.
@Vogel612 Gone.

@Vogel612 quick edit it to remove it, and it'll disappear from DVs and CVs!

6:42 PM
there's a close-reason for typos on SO...

I'm wondering, do you guys (The mods) are alerted about flags on all the server rooms? Like, how did you end up here today? Or do you have a special mod room where you.. talk about these things? :p

@Phrancis Also, would that getdate be called on every row?

@TopinFrassi We get all flags on chat.stackexchange

user41796
@TopinFrassi yes

@Vogel612 That's why I thought it would be closed.
But, it was not.

@Mat'sMug until you got kicked by Undo?
initiation rite and stuffs?

@Vogel612 lol, that has yet to happen

hmm.. I remember rolfl saying something...

Mods can't get kicked, so that's a bit of a dud as an initiation rite.

6:44 PM
Ahahah. It seems like that's a sensible subject

Rule #1 about being a mod is "Don't talk about being a mod".

@KitZ.Fox Second rule is "Don't talk about being a mod"

@TopinFrassi narrows eyes Not sure how you knew that.

@KitZ.Fox who's talking about being a mod? I'm talking about being a janitor.

Zak
I don't think I've ever seen so many mods in here without a major flag-storm before.

user41796
6:45 PM
@KitZ.Fox better kick 'em just in case

quick flag everything. wait. dont do that. :)

@ArtOfCode I know, right? high fives

@KitZ.Fox Nah I don't think so, I would assume the query plan designer is smart enough to realize it needs to only do it once

@Zak We're getting popular! :p

@Phrancis I would not assume that.

If I had stars left, there'd be a star wall here

> Did I miss a flag-fest?

6:47 PM
@Zak there was half a flag-storm...

you mean stars aren't legolas's quiver and always full no matter how many get fired out?
9

So glad there was a flag storm ... Now I know where to come for all my codez revoozing needs.

I've never hit my star limit, ever

@enderland you are not welcome here, stranger

@Phrancis Humm I would not assume, I would test :P Sometime I feel like I'm smart enough and well, let's say I did not always prove myself I was smart :P

6:47 PM
@enderland Lol. I don't have the fancy blond hairs to fit Legolas. So I can't have his quiver..

@enderland You clearly don't know our room that well

@enderland if I told you mods get 5 times as many stars, would that explain it?

@KitZ.Fox That's EXACTLY why we flagged everything. We want publicity. :p

@syb0rg nah I've noticed how many fewer messages have been starred recently than when I got here this morning... hehhehe

@ArtOfCode WHAT?? WE NEED AN ELECTION!! NOW!!!!

6:48 PM
@ArtOfCode ... probably not ;)

user41796
@TopinFrassi Not necessarily the type of publicity you should be looking for... :-)

@enderland lots of people don't know about the star-cap until they become regulars in The 2nd Monitor...

@Vogel612 lol

I've only starred 3 messages here today. and one was a message I posted lol

@enderland Mmm, didn't think so. Might explain it to all these strange non-blue people though :)

forgot to unstar it after unpinning :P

@TopinFrassi That is what I was thinking :D

6:50 PM
Or "no such thing as bad publicity."

@enderland You can star your own messages?

Oh, a payroll email. One of the better emails I've got today :)

@TopinFrassi even I can do that

@TopinFrassi by pinning and unpinning. It's a chat bug.

Hm, PK has a clustered index, that seems to be the only index. It's on the field I am counting sos_id, but not on the other field sos_processed that I'm using for filtering

6:50 PM
Ooooohhhh

@TopinFrassi only if you pin it (I then unpinned it since I didn't want to pin messages here lol, someone else suggested pinning and I did/changed my mind)

@ArtOfCode there are no bugs. only undocumented features.

@Phrancis post the query again? what are you working in?

Dang, I kinda like all these mods being in here
2

@Mat'sMug same thing

6:51 PM
@KitZ.Fox Thanks! :) You're also french? (Your profile seems to indicate this. :p)

Maybe we should have flag wars more often

@syb0rg bad

@syb0rg Yeah me too. It brings a new ambiance here.

@syb0rg you mean Star Wars, right?

Meh. let the mods take care of stuff like people asking "What is 1+1" in the Maths.SE room

user41796
6:51 PM
@syb0rg Very bad. You run higher odds of getting suspended that way.

@TopinFrassi No, but I grew up in Maine so I grew up speaking French.

@enderland We should totally have Star wars here.

@TopinFrassi A New Star

@syb0rg bots have negative numbered user ids. :-)

@enderland So does everyone :p

@enderland But he's the ultimate sith lord!

Zak
@enderland Have you ever seen "The Phantom Edit"?

:25981068 2008 R2D2 to stay within context

@Phrancis If you drop the Now column and run the query, is it fast?

Q: Sudoku solver C++

Kyle Marc T. CotejoI am trying to make a Sudoku solver C++ program. The user inputs the sudoku board with blank spaces as zeroes. The program should process the values and replace zeroes with appropriate numbers. I got it working but the first zero it encounters, it makes it 9 and the rest of the zeroes become 1. H...

Q: doubly-linked-list

Safwat Fouad1-Write the type definition of a doubly-linked-list node (DLL_node) in C. 2. Define the doubly linked list to be, simply, a pointer to a node. 3. Write a C function to initialize the list. 4. Write a C function to insert an element at a particular position.

holy wall of messages

Zak
@enderland You aint seen nothin'

@GlenH7 actually that's feeds...
subtle but important difference.
May I introduce?

Introduce

@Zak yet

@GlenH7 How might one obtain one of these...?

^^ a real bot

user41796
@Vogel612 I know Duga quite well. She monitors for Programmers too.

@Vogel612 Aw, thanks! ;)

6:54 PM
shucks

@syb0rg be a feed

@KitZ.Fox Hmm all of a sudden it's not slow any more, although taking out the [Now] column does speed up a bit. I think the table must have been under heavy load

i.e. feed me I'm hungry

@syb0rg you're only half-bot, remember? ;-)

Zak
As much as I feel affection towards @duga, I feel the undisputed king has to be @RoboSanta

6:55 PM
uh, no

All Hail Duga

♥ @Duga ♥

Zak
But it's Santa. And robots.

that's probably a bad motto for a code-reviewing site though...

@Phrancis Maybe it needed enough data to build its own thing.

6:56 PM
after all: All Hail Perfection

@Zak RoboSanta is a much cooler character

user41796
@TopinFrassi But Duga points out horrible SO commentary that we can then pounce on

and Star Wars has decided that Duga is the better bot

Hmm... Flag wars, Star wars, and now Bot wars?

@GlenH7 Same here :p

6:57 PM
@GlenH7 yeah, and get hi-rep SO users to rage-quit over our commenting back

@Mat'sMug That's only you though

I've got a bot I could bring along >:)

@Mat'sMug who needs HighRep SO users?

Zak
@SimonForsberg ROBOT WARS!

God I miss that show.

@ArtOfCode We only allow tool-bots, not toy-bots, in here.

6:57 PM
@Duga you shall now be known as a droid. bots are not cool enough.

speak of the devil

user41796
@Mat'sMug Oh what? When did that happen?

@GlenH7 about a week into my moderatorship, in July

@Mat'sMug define "HighRep"...

6:59 PM
well, 18K IIRC

that's peanuts..

user41796
That must have been epic. "I'm a high rep SO user and I can declare where things go even if I have no knowledge of that site whasoever!!!!"

twice my SO rep, so if that's peanuts, I don't want to know what you qualify my mere 7.5K @Vogel612 ;-)

Zak
@GlenH7 I think the highest rep user I got in a fight with over CR was like 100k or so
