A: RegEx match open tags except XHTML self-contained tags

bobinceYou can't parse [X]HTML with regex. Because HTML can't be parsed by regex. Regex is not a tool that can be used to correctly parse HTML. As I have answered in HTML-and-regex questions here so many times before, the use of regex will not allow you to consume HTML. Regular expressions are a tool th...

@Malachi I've been around, I know the meme. According to knowyourmeme.com some comic writer came up with it at random.
There may be more behind it though.

I don't know about that....
> answered Nov 13 '09 at 23:04

@m
FUDGE!!!
@Malachi I've seen it before
And I've made a regex that matches attributes PERFECTLY

7:05 PM
@IsmaelMiguel so you think

It respects every single aspect and is 100% perfect
It matches the attributes just like a parser would match the values

You can't parse HTML with Regex.

I didn't said tags
I said attributes

@Hosch250 That was asked 2 hours ago...

7:09 PM
Thanks.

@maaartinus Do you plan on posting your Ultimatoe class for review some time?

Well, they start zombifying immediately, but I guess it wasn't a zombie yet.

I have a zombie that is over 1 month old

PHP?

7:11 PM
Don't know PHP.

No that's a zombie that is years old.

Q: PHP function to create a Hex dump - Followup

Ismael MiguelThis is a followup of the following question: PHP function to create a Hex dump @Corbin made a very interesting review, and I re-wrote most of the code. function hex_dump( $value ) { $to_hex = function( $number ){ $hex = strtoupper( dechex( $number ) ); //if we don't check ...

(I don't know what other tags to use)

I'll probably read through it all tomorrow, for now I +1'd it.
Maybe that will get it some traction.

Thanks dude
I've already rubbed this a few times

No problem, just maybe it helps dezombify it.

In this chat and other chats

7:13 PM
But I'll dig into it tomorrow. (Would be tonight, but I am heading to the mall after work. (Long story)).

@Mast That messed up the star wall fairly well.

A: The famous tag regex answer: Should its title be edited?

marioNo. Changing the title to something unrepresentative would only lead to more unhelpful links in unrelated questions. Bobinces fun answer gets glorified on SO, but it is not very useful in itself. Notice how the question there was about parsing nested XHTML. There are many good technical answers ...

45 minutes.

@Mast That was my fault, I starred it for you.

@EBrown You don't have to worry

7:14 PM
fixed

@IsmaelMiguel Been a while since I've done PHP, but I'll drop some comments in there.

Thanks.

@Mat'sMug Good work. Lol

I hope it is extremely hard to find anything bad

Stupid baseball fans are over here calling opposing teams "Hitler".
I HATE SPORTS.

7:15 PM
@IsmaelMiguel Most of the commenting I do is on semantics, rather than main code.

Nope.
Nope.
I'll take my dog on a walk.

@IsmaelMiguel lol

@EBrown Don't be sorry.

Q: Deciding when to update image in database

James HogleI have written a method which is used to determine whether or not I need to update an image stored in a database with an image stored on a local machine. @EBrown I still hope it makes your review a hard job. It means that there's nearly anything bad

7:17 PM
@Mat'sMug Did you just un-star a message?

yes

Don't.

BBL to cast my vote.

@Malachi Sorry about the @h there. It keeps repeating. This chat is bugged

@IsmaelMiguel Your input device is broken.

@Mast That messed up the star wall fairly well.

@IsmaelMiguel are you using a phone app?

@Mat'sMug Let it stick, as a warning.

2 different computers, 2 different operating systems, 3 different browsers
ALL do that

@IsmaelMiguel I may as well offer some critique of it, I appreciate even the most minuscule critiques of my code.

ALL the bloody time
@EBrown Ping me a question. I may not know the language, but if I can read it I will answer it.

7:19 PM
@Mast but I don't want to star it. someone else will have to :)

@Mat'sMug I did star it, you removed mine.

@Mat'sMug did you remove the stars from a post?

@EBrown Wow. My headache just went through the roof!

I haven't done that yet

7:21 PM
@IsmaelMiguel Confusing? Or?

3 mins ago, by Mat's Mug
yes

@EBrown I already had it before, and now I've added a huge confusion

@Mat'sMug chat is scrolling pretty fast. not hard to miss a one word post

Believe it or not I upvote all answers to my questions so long as they are relevant.

2088 bytes... HOW?

@IsmaelMiguel Accents and diacritics.

I know, but how?
How did it got through?

39 secs ago, by EBrown
@IsmaelMiguel Accents and diacritics.
It's Unicode.
It's big.

7:24 PM
That's not what I meant.
How did the chat sent 2088 bytes without complaining?

I think SE uses Varchar(Max) columns.

chat can send much

And I think it only counts actual characters. (What is a character? Well I'll let Joel tell you.)

@Mast That actually bogged my browser down for a second.

Be aware of what?

Of overusing Zalgo.
There might be a DDoS possibility here if we send a bunch of it all at once.

Cthlu, your star went missing
2

But that would not be appropriate in this chat, perhaps we should move this to the sandbox.
We should try it...

Revenge the data? o.O

7:27 PM
LOIC by Zalgo.

@Mast I'd rather not....lol

def greeting = /^(MONK|Monk).*/
2

Monking

@Phrancis That should be /^monk/i

@IsmaelMiguel He likes being verbose about it.

7:29 PM
@Phrancis What language is that?

@EBrown I can write it verbose too
/^(M[oO][nN][kK]).+$/

The M is missing the other case as well.

I know
It was on purpose

Is it bad that we are reviewing that which was meant as a joke?

Nah, joke reviews are on topic for joke code. I guess...

7:31 PM
@EBrown no, it's stage 2 of becoming a CR addict ;-)

@Mat'sMug I guess so....lol

Looks like pseudocode. Shall I move it to the Stack Overflow chat room?

lol

What stages are there?

@200_success Yes. Off topic.

7:32 PM
Stage 1 is denial.
2

What about stage 0 and 2?

Well we already know stage 2, @Mat'sMug said it earlier.

@200_success Groovy

Then stage 3

Monking is a weird word, as for character distribution.

7:34 PM
I bet if you filled a page with it, without any encoding markers IE would crap itself.

Do I want to test that?

@EBrown I bet if you filled a page with it, without any encoding markers IE would crap itself.

Do it!
@Phrancis That looks like you Jamalized my statement.

@EBrown I just made it truer ;)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++.++‌++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++.-.---.--.+++++.-------.----------------------------------------------------------------------.

Alright, I'm on IE11

Get that brainfuck out of here.

Woohoo, Brainfuck! :D
4

WTH???

Only Simon... ^_^"

If you scroll inside the textarea, IE will scroll the whole page o.O

7:38 PM
That was one very inefficient way of displaying "Monking!" though

He could just cat -v monking, no?

Does cat -v produce Brainfuck code?

If monking contains it, yes.
Or he could join us normal people and use "Monking"

inefficient in terms of code required, that is. In terms of instructions being ran at runtime, it is the fastest possible.

Ah, in that case.

7:40 PM
Normal people use Brainfuck use "Monking"

@SimonAndréForsberg That ^^

@SimonAndréForsberg We could use a new greeting

Wasn't that the whole purpose of Brainfuck?

I was going to recommend a s/Brainfuck/Monking there but you fixed it.

Efficiency is key.

7:41 PM
@skiwi If we have to write BF code to greet each other, nobody would write much here...

I've been working on a string -> Brainfuck converter. If you write the decoding part, we're golden.

@SimonAndréForsberg That's an understatement.

@Mast That would be a Brainfuck VM/interpreter

@Mast the purpose of Brainfuck was to create a language that requires an as small interpreter as possible to implement.

Which there are tons already here on CodeReview

7:42 PM
Close enough.
@IsmaelMiguel I know.

There is a 100byte-long compiler for Brainfuck, as far as I know

@SimonAndréForsberg It does really good at that.

@Mast I'm also interested in writing such a one. You should check out esolangs.org/wiki/Brainfuck_constants

What's the fun in a language if you don't abuse it every once in a while?

Some people like it serious

7:44 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg WTF

All usage of Brainfuck is abuse.

You better unstrike that.

@Mast note that that's only char-per-char though, and in some cases there might be better ways of writing it. I have a little Brainfuck project that I would want to support quite many things.

@SimonAndréForsberg Mine is a little more to-the-point
Like, a CLI which accepts input and dumps the result. Way less LoC
I'll put it up for review when it's done.
Currently JS bashing.

7:47 PM
Looking forward to seeing it.

> Primary closes in 11 minutes.

@SimonAndréForsberg The JS bashing? Me too.

(May I include the algorithm in Brainduck when you're finished with it?)

@SimonAndréForsberg Does C++ play nice with Java?

10 minutes.

7:49 PM
You could easily port it I guess.
So, sure. Have at it.
I found a new way of creating Git repo's today, so I probably make one of those as well.

Q: Best practice for ||= a instance variable in Ruby

Ben NelsonSo I have an instance variable x. x needs to be instantiated one time in my class and used for the lifecycle of that class until disposed of. Right now I have some code that does the following: def determine_x x ||= begin # some code to determine x end end Is this the best practice f...

AAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH! I really hate CSS.

@Donald.McLean CSS is nice, what's wrong?
I'd rather have CSS than inline styles.

CSS is fine.

7:53 PM
Just fine.

@Mast yeah, porting it shouldn't be too difficult.

@Donald.McLean I have a love/hate relationship with CSS. Anything I can help with?

Does he know posting it twice won't get it here any faster?

7:54 PM
@Duga Yes, keep posting such non-constructive comments. I almost have my Marshal badge.

I'm working on a panel and the users are unsure how they want it to look. Part of the panel is a group of button/input boxes that are supposed to be below this one table. In the new layout, the table size is dynamic and it's messing up the placement of the control group.

@SimonAndréForsberg Sure, I do. I'll post it probably tonight, I just add some comments.

@k0pernikus It's not. Looks way too examplish to be on-topic. — Mast 29 secs ago

@EBrown the second one was actually a close-vote.

1 minute.

7:58 PM
@EBrown Both are gone.

@Hosch250 you beat me to saying it by seconds

@SimonAndréForsberg Ah, my mistake.

@maaartinus No need to rush. I'm working on your GUI code now.

@Mast Yeah, I flagged both.

7:58 PM
@Duga @Mast @SimonAndréForsberg In what way is that "example code"? There's a working JSFiddle and everything.
It doesn't get more concrete than that.
