Yeah. You're right about that. I just don't like feeling like nothing is okay in here now.

Remember how The 2nd Monitor was 2 months ago?

Like, it's all off topic. Just close the room down. There shall be nothing disagreeable here.

Let's try that. It was better than last week.

Or come here to gather for zombie hunting, and otherwise, chill in the nth monitor

@Yann that's true and that's actually still the case
the problem was noise not going down when there was business talk

11:04 AM
But why should we have to? That's the problem. I come here to see what's going on with the site and chill a bit.

@RubberDuck but you're shutting up when it's about business

Spreading myself across yet another chat room just isn't an option.
Yeah, I try to, but it doesn't change the fact that I no longer feel welcome.

But site stuff isn't off topic on nth, nor is the idle chat
So what's the issue with having this as a quick-response meta?

Yet another chat room...

@RubberDuck Give it time.
Don't make one day spoil the long term.

Q: Sqlite db Not visible in DDMS View

user3859356I followed a few examples and tried creating multiple tables in one Database in SQLLite. But I am Unable to see the DB in DDMS Mode in my emulator. I created two Database One For Login and One for the Entire Application. The Login Db is visible in File Explorer Tab Inside DDMS View in Eclipse. I ...

@RubberDuck What @Mast said ^^
Situations like this is bound to happen some time, the only question is How to handle it. Personally, I don't think "Just close the room down" is a good solution.

@CaptainObvious It don't work good, send help

Personally, I don't plan on following things in The Nth Monitor. I already have several favorite rooms, and I'm sure The Nth can survive well without me.

^ that

I feel like if enough people say "it can manage without me", that statement stops being true

11:14 AM
@Yann for that room.... maybe
depends on how the "new regulars" hold up there
I'm personally more scared this will result in a bisected community

Yeah, that's the most likely way I see it going. I hope not though

@Yann Well, if The Nth Monitor would die down, I don't think it would be that much of a catastrophe.

@CaptainObvious RBA

I got a really helpful answer here, it is worthy of upvotes:

Ismael MiguelDisclamer: My review will be short and I will only focus on the function userData(). I've read it carefully and did my best to improve it and make it more readable for you. 11:20 AM
@SimonAndréForsberg You're right

@Vogel612 that's exactly the damage that's been done. It's fractured the community.
I'm not saying something shouldn't have been done, but... it went badly.

@RubberDuck What's the difference between this, and the previous creation of the TCG and VBA rooms?

Those rooms were created because we had other business and respectfully took it elsewhere.
Now I'm left feeling like there's no room for or here.
Those rooms didn't fracture the community.
Even right now, after what happened yesterday, I feel like this very conversation is somehow off topic here now.

just used that in a project, thank god we don't do code reviews though. — Ilya Smagin 1 min ago

@RubberDuck Don't worry, I think there will always be room for here. It will just be.... less idle talk about ponies. I understand that you're feeling a bit discouraged after the recent events though.
2
@RubberDuck In a way, I think those rooms actually might have done exactly that. People like you and I spent more time in those rooms and less time here in The 2nd Monitor, which gave an opportunity for.... less mature people... to decrease the quality of the conversation in here (probably without even being aware that they did so)

11:30 AM
^ I used to find Simon, Mat, skiwi and Ducky in here
now I have to go to at least 2 different rooms..

@SimonAndréForsberg That
Not to point fingers, but the well known regulars were insufficiently handling the situation forcing a mod to step in.

@Mast all regulars were insufficiently handling the situation

@Vogel612 Ofcourse, that's what I meant.

@RubberDuck I sense that you are feeling confused about what to post where now, I get that. I feel slightly the same way, but I think that a big reason for why @rolfl did what he did was to reduce the overall volume of messages in here, which hopefully encourages people like you and me to spend more time here again.

@Vogel612 I'm always here, I just might not be here. I log into my starred rooms each morning.

11:33 AM
@RubberDuck I do, too, but since I'm in the Rubberduck anyways and I was asking something from you, I figured the prophet should go to the mountain

@SimonAndréForsberg it certainly did not have that affect on me.

It hopefully will in the longer run

So, I've been thinking that maybe part of the problem is that several of the room owners aren't here as much as they used to be.

As a room owner in here, I have certainly failed this room at times when I was needed, there are many reasons for this: Being AFK, being occupied with non-chat activity, not getting pinged when I was needed, etc...

Is it time to add another?

11:35 AM
@RubberDuck but who..

@Vogel612 idk. That's a good question.

@Vogel612 Trusted regulars. People who will keep calm.

We had that a while ago already. But rolfl wanted a way to "impartially add new owners without coming off as a club"

@RubberDuck I think the Room Owners in here are likely to change after the CR elections.

Malachi would be a good start.

11:36 AM
@RubberDuck Malachi is also US Timezone

Yeah. I think so too.

in general the locational geographics is skewed in here+

True.
But he tends to be here more than @Simon and @Mat. No offense guys.

We got a couple of EU regulars.
Jeroen, Vogel, etc.

@RubberDuck None taken.

11:37 AM
@Jeroen would be a good one. Perhaps @Janos would consider it as well. I mean, they're both running for mod, so why not take on the responsibility of being another room owner.

I don't want to rush into making room ownership change here today. And because of the recent turbulence, I think we should let things settle down first so that we get a clearer sense for who will be here, who will not be here, etc.

Regardless of how elections work out.
@SimonAndréForsberg Fair point. I'm not saying "let's do this right now".

Mods get auto RO powers anyway...

I've just been thinking about it and I think it's time to spread the work around a little bit.
Also true.

@RubberDuck @JeroenVannevel is not running for moderator.

He's not? He should. =;)-

Okay. I'll let a sleeping dog lie because elections are coming, but if you guys are open to it, I think we should consider adding a few people to help with the volume.
I just don't want to see this happen again.

I think we all agree on that one.

@Nobody wants to see this happen again.

11:46 AM
More RO wouldn't hurt, although it's important not to pick the wrong people.
Doing so could hurt the room.

I was probably too trigger happy, but: I have rolled back the last edit. Please see What to do when someone answers. I strongly suggest you edit the question to contain only the updated code, seeing that there were no answers yet. having two codeblocks is quite confusing... — Vogel612 56 secs ago

RubberDuckHeslacher has been quietly clearing the queues, editing questions, and nudging new users in the right direction for quite some time now. No pressure. You just came to mind as someone who might not have considered running, even though you could be very good at it.
Also, I'm not positive, but you seem to be on a different timezone.

I am in the same time zone like Vogel612. It is more a problem about english not my native language. I need to look up words to often leaving the grammar aside ;-)

Fair enough.
Like I said, no pressure.

I nominate myself to push the around here.

@Vogel612 You must be kidding, it's Germany, nobody drives relaxed!

A: How much idle chatter do we tolerate in The 2nd Monitor?

nhgrifWhile I agree in principle with what is attempting to be accomplished in The 2nd Monitor, I consider the behavior of those trying to accomplish that goal to be entirely unconscionable and absurd. This is not how you moderate chat rooms--not with an iron fist. A singular person can't just decide...

If at any point in time rolfl is removed as a room owner here, feel free to invite me back here.

Pretends to ignore what was said in the last few lines

rolfl has removed rolfl from the list of this room's owners.

Please, no more drama today

Did I miss the owners-fest?

@nhgrif You should know however that moderators are automatically room owners everywhere.

No actually, what happened? It seems that I just arrived in the middle of something.

@Morwenn nope

@Morwenn As of today... All was fine

Q: Are there downsides to using calls to system() instead of your programming language's functions?

PimgdI'm programming in C to create some API for an embedded device. This embedded device runs a variant of Linux. I'm not very familiar with C - I'm more familiar with shell scripting/bash. With that in mind, when it comes to things like checking whether a directory exists, or getting disk usage, I ...

Now it is a popularity club...

Just because someone provokes you, doesn't mean that you should react

hmmh
I wanted to post a code review first
but realised I'd have to type out both implementations

12:29 PM
So what's the problem with your current code? If you want working code reviewed, see codereview.stackexchange.comjonrsharpe 37 secs ago

so went for an SO question

Also, if you'll pardon the shameless plug, you could use this StringBuilder VBA class to improve the performance of constructing the CSV string. — Blackhawk 27 secs ago

but I'm still wondering what you guys think about it because this seems like something that people on CR would make a point about
like "don't use system for that, use this C function, because X"

@rolfl soo.. umm... break time?
we had a small discussion about changing room owners in here earlier, and came to the conclusion to wait until after moderator elections

@Pimgd systemc alls start a new system process.
that overhead is normally not small

12:33 PM
@Vogel612 some things perhaps cannot wait.

Compare it as follows (do you have linux?)

@SimonAndréForsberg perhaps.

copy a bunch of files in to a temp folder.
then do:
find . --rm
and then complare with:
find . --exec rm {} \;

=D I'd never run such a destructive command

exec will take longer, right?

12:35 PM
OK, then do the following:
find . -exec grep -l fubar {} \:

Just don't run rm -rf /

find . -print0 | xargs -0 grep -l fubar
The first one creates a new grep process for each file, the second one does not.

Afternoon all :)
the temperature here is killing me w,w

@EthanBierlein Is that from the cold? Because I have two nice, long, thick appendages that can warm you up
hehehe

haha :D

12:43 PM
@Vogel612 - the mods together discussed changing room ownership when you raised the issue a few weeks ago.
Sure, the timing may be "reactive", but the concept is established

I don't understand why someone that provoked "sudden behavior" (there might be a better word for it, not sure if "emotional" fits) now is a room owner

to create balance
someone has to make a decision, and since I am a moderator (for now), then I will

@nhgrif bullies a mod and threatens him to not come back until he/she isn't around anymore, and you immediately give in and make him an owner

if people abuse their position as room owner, then I will remove that authority

Just my two cents (not valuable enough for an answer on the main topic), but I'm probably still around because of idle chat. I can't say that I disagree with @rolfl's answer on the topic though.

12:46 PM
(and yes, as a mod, my "powers" include anything that room owners can do anyway).

The ironic thing is that it seems that I might be the only community member that actually agrees with what rolfl is trying to do... I just don't agree with how. Everyone else seems opposite--agrees with how but not what...

@nhgrif I think it's been perfectly clear yesterday that the majority agrees on killing the noise

@nhgrif - I feel I need to hash out our disagreements on this, somehow, and I can't help but think you have misunderstood something..... but can't figure out what

The solution would be "to educate people", we all know that it often requires too much time and that everyone is not willing to be educated :)

You do know that your suggestion in meta is not going to work, right?

12:48 PM
I don't care.

I don't like you talking for everyone at all, @nhgrif

@Morwenn #stack-overflow-users #duga

Ahh, OK.

@rolfl The two people who dropped out of the moderator elections as a result of this drama do agree on a few things:
in Standards & Conventions, 11 mins ago, by RubberDuck
I think I'm done man. I never thought it, but I think I'm done with CR.
Err, read transcript from there.

@SimonAndréForsberg You got me good time with that one.

12:50 PM
@nhgrif @RubberDuck I think it is important to remember that there is more to CR than The 2nd Monitor.

Seems I missed some drama over here :/

in Standards & Conventions, 2 mins ago, by RubberDuck
When it stops being fun, stop doing it.
Huh, OK.

I figured out what part of the problem is, but I don't know that there's actually any way to fix it.

people care too much?
maybe that's my issue too.

No, personality clash.

12:52 PM
Well, it was 100% not my intention to piss off the regulars... it wa 100% my intention to respond to exactly what they asked for (including @nhgrif, and @RubberDuck).

Certain personality traits will inevitably cause people to clash - one of my daughters clashes with my wife.

@rolfl @SimonAndréForsberg Did you read the transcript or just the one message I linked?

@nhgrif reading

I can't speak for the duck, but to me, this could have been coordinated way better and hashed out on the meta.

@nhgrif I read the whole thing.

12:53 PM
I didn't understand what you were doing until you were really far into doing it...

@nhgrif 0 I have done nothing new.

Okay.

it has been in meta multiple times before

in Standards & Conventions, 11 mins ago, by RubberDuck
All in all, I just don't need the drama. I feel like I just lost a friend.

hmmh, big drama in here today?

12:55 PM
Just a little bit.

It is also not the first time I have had to get this room back closer to being on-topic

@Pimgd Appareantly some people felt the need to revive it today, I thought it was over with after yesterday

eh, at least the stars on the right are still normal
The same silly type of comments as always =D

@Pimgd The stars will never go away

@Pimgd big drama was yesterday
this is just the wake

12:56 PM
@Vogel612 I can live with the wake, the problem I have with it today is that there are actually actions being done that can be considered harmful
Talking will sort itself out easily
Actions are harder to revert

I don't really see the problem, I mean isn't it normal that a chat-room gets off-topic most of the time. Whenever someone enters with a question he gets handled. Isn't that the way it is supposed to be? I'm currently reading the meta post, so I'm not completely up-to-date. But tell me if I'm wrong.

If you goto hell, then you can't come back for example

comefrom hell;

So, tomorrow is a holiday in the US. Should we celebrate Friday early?

@DJanssens that's how it's supposed to be, but it didn't work
point being the regulars and ROs were letting it slide

12:58 PM
It's my last day at work tomorrow, so if peeps want to celebrate that I'm on board

and we had a mess in here, just read like... 3 days ago

@DJanssens I think the biggest annoyance was immature discussions that have been in here by some people which was generating too much noise

transcript is a mess

define immature discussions @skiwi?

and then rolfl kinda stepped in, and went terminator from one second to another
3

12:58 PM
You can have off-topic stuff that's still serious and mature and by which nobody is annoyed

Isn't the highlighting helping enough to filter out noise?

@DJanssens Like daily life stuff that teenagers encounter, stuff like that is fit for a Twitter feed or for Skype, but not for here

@DJanssens nope
@skiwi then next time say it
Silent (or in other chatrooms) Disapproval doesn't cut it

@Vogel612 "Hasta la vista, baby"-style?

You are the regular, they are the newbies, you teach them how it works
@DJanssens yes... completely with kicks, message moving and a room freeze

1:01 PM
@Vogel612 I often say stuff, but if nobody kicks the violators then nothing will change

^ that

Did he get a warning in advance?

now you couldn't kick people yourself, but I think you got privileges now
ROs are a ping away

I don't like this many room owners without guide lines though, that's bound to go wrong

Is there a "ping any/all room owners" batsignal?

1:02 PM
@skiwi there is guidelines.

@nhgrif @RubberDuck I think it is inevitable that an online community gets conflicts, especially one that grows as quickly as Code Review has been doing recently. I don't know about you, but personally I don't think that giving up is the answer to how to handle a conflict.

@Yann no, but ROs are listed in the room info and have italics usernames

@Vogel612 Fair enough, just wondering if that was the only way

@skiwi one thing at a time. And as long as there is no problem with the room owners, don't fix it.

@Vogel612 But right now so many people have been given room ownership, withotu someone instructing them on what to do

1:03 PM
@skiwi but where do you draw the line for daily life stuff. I mean I also regular ask how everybody is doing. Whine about the temperature being too high. Mumble about sql queries that don't work. etc.

Not to be confused with mods who have blue user names. Except I'm not a mod here, so I don't do mod stuff here normally.

Does that mean that I get kicked sooner or later too? :D
@Donald.McLean °/

@Donald.McLean Is blue a just a diamond thing?

@DJanssens It's after someone nicely asks you to cut the talk (if it is annoying) and you then don't follow "the rules"

@Yann Yes.

1:04 PM
agreed @skiwi

you can get kicked really easy if you're being offensive (source: own experience)
but I dunno about idle talk

@DJanssens Depends on how you behave. Personally, I don't think you have much to worry about.

@Donald.McLean Something something girl's best friend

I'd like to change the room description a little...

@Vogel612 Sounds fine

Speaking of beta, any word on how we're trickling through the pipes?

@Yann we're officially graduated..
fully

Though does that mean that if your in the mids of an off-topic conversation, you should simply stop talking and forget about it?

Except we are still treated like a beta site with respect to design and reputation required for privileges?

1:09 PM
room topic changed to The 2nd Monitor: General discussion about Code Review - Site Business always comes first [addicted-to-cr] [just-saying-hi] [kick-the-trolls] [monkey-business] [my-code-is-compiling] [nice-people-room]

@Vogel612 Congratulations on your first action as a new room owner!

@skiwi Yeah, that's what was throwing me. I knew about the election, but the big beta letters/colours at the top confused me

@skiwi the earlier... as long as the designers take, the latter will change upon elections, if I understand right

@Vogel612 Okay, didn't know about the latter

@skiwi one thing at a time... at least the election is a step in the right direction.

1:10 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg Thank you very much :)

@Vogel612 Except for the parts where they take "beta" off the page and the part where privileges change over to the graduated site scale.

@Donald.McLean Oh man, I forgot about the different privilage scale..

@Donald.McLean I figure that changes when the full mods are appointed

Haven't there been talks about taking a midway between beta rep scale and graduated rep scale?

@SimonAndréForsberg this has nothing to do with "giving up". I'm not giving up, I'm making the calculated decision that if something is no longer fun, then I should no longer do that thing. After the last two days, neither this chat room or CR in general (they are very much integrally related for me) hold any interest for me any more. Walking away is for my personal sanity.

Q: What is dim tab(x,y)?

StarlaysI have encountered the fallowing code: ... dim tab(4,1999) for i=1 to prod.count k=k+1 tab(1,k)=prod.item(i).PartNumber tab(2,k)=prod.item(i).Name tab(3,k)=prod.item(i).Definition tab(4,k)=1 next What is the tab from the code? Is the same as table()...

Maybe someone wants warm water ?

Do you have to have a certain amount of rep to vote or can't you vote during nominations?

@Gemtastic You can't vote during nominations.

Duh, yeah, nominations are not voting yet ;)

Ok, well then. 4 more days til voting :)

Let's hope we get two more candidates so we can have primaries.

Whats the advantage of having primaries ?

I could candidate but I doubt anyone would want that :P

1:57 PM
@Gemtastic I don't think you have enough rep.

Out of interest, is there a minimum rep?

300

Ah, that may answer my question

@Heslacher I think it would be more of a status thing, as there are very few sites that require primaries.

@EthanBierlein Ah, well then, that settles that ^^
