A poor, measly 4 votes left.
I think I'd better save them so I can have access to the First posts queue.

@Duga I wonder how many such comments SO gets per day.

I'm sure the rate is low today.

@SimonAndréForsberg What if you start a 24-hour cyclus as soon as you hit the rate limit? It would screw up your nice cron-scheduler though ;)

@SimonAndréForsberg feature request: store the posted comments somewhere, given them an id (show us that id in the chat post), and let us be able to reply and mark it as "correct" or "bad recommendation" - and then post number of bad & correct recommendations made at reload; keep that data and analyze to see if bad recommendations decrease over time.
3

6:12 PM
@skiwi my cron-scheduler runs once every 15 seconds, then compares two Instants to see if it is time to check new comments

That must take a lot of CPU.
Why don't you use a Timer?

@SimonAndréForsberg Ah, nice and easy

Just set a Timer for N minutes, and it takes no CPU time, so I've read.

@Mat'sMug @Duga currently does not listen for chat replies.

ScheduledThreadPool ftw..
also we can change that soonish, right?
though JCE got postponed another week...

6:15 PM
@Hosch250 I'd rather use a ScheduledExecutorService. But as I am using Spring, I am using some Spring classes. I think it should be possible to use the Spring-classes dynamically though, it is something I have to investigate more.

Oh, I thought it was Java.
Java with Spring?

Spring is Java

Spring is XML mostly...

I never use a java.util.Timer these days.

Conflicting information.

6:16 PM
@Vogel612 I'm using Java-based configuration.

well I never was anywhere deep in spring..

I should write a WPF clock with a Timer and post it for review.

It'd get killed pretty quickly

@Vogel612 annotation based configuration rules

hmm... ya definitely

6:17 PM
I use quite a bit of Spring, and minimal xml in it

the spring I was "taught" in a few sessions over the course of months had only XML

@Hosch250 got [badge:curious] yet? :)

and the explanation for how and why it works was "MAGIC"
2
 @Autowired // MAGIC ! ;)

me teammate went to a Spring training. It was all about XML. No JDBC. No unit testing. Very lame

@Autowired // REFLECTION ! ;)

6:20 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg well now I figured it'd be something with that..

I'm happy I learned how annotation-based configuration works in Spring

@Mat'sMug Yeah.

but... at that time...........

A long time ago.
That only takes 5 questions.

obtw @janos you were the one who recommended me PyCharm, right?

6:20 PM
Did you mean Inquisitive?

Oh. I meant the silver one

@Vogel612 sounds like me

No, I have the thirty questions, but they weren't all on separate days.

do you maybe have an idea why running my code executes the whole thing twice over?
Ctrl+Shift+F10: main runs twice...

Ctrl-shift-f5 runs it once, f10 is twice of f5 ... ;-)

6:22 PM
the most interesting part is that the data I have in an instance are persisted throughout the runs...
I managed to get that out of it by resetting the data on instance creation, but....

that sure ain't normal

LOL, I like where this is heading...

maybe if you simplify your example you'll find some mistake you made somewhere somehow

Q: Cannot load HTML file into browser

the_proleI am new to HTML. I've been following this tutorial for designing a basic web template. However, I am unable to load the resultant HTML file into the browser. <!doctype html> <html lang="en"> <head> <title = "main" /> <link rel="stylesheet" href="mainCSS.css" /> <meta charset="utf-8" /

I doubt it gets simpler than what I have..
big block comment for simplification...

6:27 PM
@Vogel612 Paint art ftw

put the `main()` call in:

if __name__ == '__main__':
main()

naaah that's the snipping tool pen functionality

Why does it print twice?

gah, can't format code here

it works now...
please please explain

6:28 PM
it prints twice because the module gets imported before executing main()
that's the +1 execution
the if guard prevents that

so it's executed when it's declared?

no, in order to execute the function, Python imports the file as a package

ohhh... and that calls main?

and this is precisely why you should always move code out of global namespace and start executing stuff from the if guard
main() is not a declaration there, it's a method call

so this wouldn't have happened if I had placed def main(): into a separate file?
(assuming a proper import that is)

EnnicolemHello codereview friends, I am learning Python (3) and Django (1.7) after a while in PHP (not POO). I am rebuilding my own website that has public members. Should I vote to kill it?

the problem is having code that executes stuff in the global namespace

I skipped - you guys can handle it.
tfl, bbl.

Skipped as well... but IMO if (((y >> i) & 1) == 1){ could be made clearer.

6:35 PM
@janos and I have no clue what you mean by that. I'll do some research, thanks!

user image
3

izzat js?

@Vogel612 What else would you expect?

@Vogel612 you should avoid code in the global namespace as much as possible. Whenever somebody imports the file, that code is automatically executed. The common practice is to have the functionality inside methods, and use the if guard I gave you to make the file do something when executed as a script. The code in the if guard will not be executed when you just import the file
then your functions will be reusable, as other scripts can import it without anything getting executed

interestingly google already knew the question well..
I just put in "why if _"
and google knew ;)
iow that if condition is something like a prerequisite for a program entry point, right?

6:41 PM
the expression will be true when running the script as ./script.py or python script.py, but not when you do import script somewhere else in your program

which is exactly what's planned if I want this as my "main-method" (to speak in java-terms)

exactly

one last question:
Is there a way to reset class properties on initialization without explicitly doing so in __init__(self):?

not sure, haven't done much Python lately, would need to brush up a little

@skiwi that image shows a 4chan-thread

@Vogel612 Ah... I don't frequent 4chan

it's easily recognizable with the pink background and the green Anonymous as username ;)
@janos while it definitely is almost the same as IntelliJ IDEA from the look and feel, It's not giving me anything near such a hard time

Cheok Yan ChengRecently, I perform re-factor on one of my frequent used immutable class, by removing its getter. My rational for doing so it. @janos i.e. an explanation of why you're doing the if check that way?

the point is to not have much code even in the if guard, because that code is still in global scope
so variables you use there will be accessible by methods you call from there, which can lead to obscure bugs

That sounds painful ^

I see a shamrock.
The shamrock refers to the young sprigs of clover or trefoil. It is known as a symbol of Ireland, with St. Patrick having used it as a metaphor for the Christian Trinity, according to legend. The name shamrock is derived from Irish seamróg, which is the diminutive version of the Irish word for clover (seamair) meaning simply "little clover" or "young clover". Shamrock is usually considered to refer to either the species Trifolium dubium (lesser clover, Irish: seamair bhuí) or Trifolium repens (white clover, Irish: seamair bhán). However, other three-leaved plants—such as Medicago lupulina, Trifolium...

@Hosch250 I think Mario usually lurks, just doesn't talk that often ... Good to see you around @mariosangiorgio :)

@Phrancis you're right. I haven't been much active for quite a long time and even before I was doing more code reviews than talking in chat

Oh.

When I have time I like to have a look at code reviews and also check here if there is some interesting discussion

@mariosangiorgio Time is a precious commodity, indeed!

There's almost always an interesting discussion going on.
