I wonder if there is a "correct" way, to display different content, based on the the state of responsive webdesign. Different in this case is meant as an abbreviated text to display instead of the full one. I have created this example table with a couple columns, containing either the full name of a state, or, when resized to a smaller screensize, it's 2-letter code

I'm fairly new to python and have been told that it is better practice to incorporate template strings into my code. How would I go about doing so for this piece of code? #!/usr/bin/python import sys, urllib2, re es="http://eutils.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/eutils/esearch.fcgi?db=protein&term="+sys.argv[1] ef="http://eutils.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/eutils/efetch.fcg

@Phrancis Speaking from my own opinion, rather than as a moderator, I find several of the listed memes to be problematic. In particular:
- Ammo, napalm, and ho-ho-ho-napalm. We fought a great battle. We won. A permanent state of war is unhealthy. It would be a nice graduation celebration to declare Mission Accomplished, I think.
- Friday was fun fun fun for a while, but the party got out of hand. There's not much point to promoting or explaining it anymore.
- Punisher seems to be promoting downvote brigades. It might be against Stack Exchange policy (revenge downvoting), and even if it weren't, it's still a mean-spirited attitude to voting. Downvote individually as appropriate, but as a group, we should be stay positive. A reputation for negativity can really kill a community.
- The lower-scored entries in the meme list are pretty weak. It takes more than two people to make a meme.
Having stated that, I don't think I should censor any of those posts. I'm also not sure whether they should be marked "of historical interest" or just deleted. I'll leave it up to the individuals involved to decide on the appropriate action.

@200_success so you're trying to tell me that we should leave answers, that we as community decided are not something we want, live and prosper in peace?

I'm saying that voting should be a private act.

that remains...
but I think it's a sign of a healthy and active community when members who find things that are undesirable by consensus make these things "public"
you can't help the chat-effect and the meta-effect

I can see your point there. But "punishment" crosses a line, or comes close to it, I think.

true again..
I think it would be nice if you could voice your disagreement in a comment ...

I don't have a problem with you downvoting posts as you see fit. I just don't think that it should be proudly displayed as the public face of Code Review.

It has a huge repository of "extensions" and syntax highlighting is definitely one of them.

Oh, well switching editors may be overkill then I suppose...

@200_success Thanks for your thorough response about the memes, I agree with a lot of what you said. I didn't know posts could be marked of historical interest, perhaps that would be good way to handle some of those related to The Mission?

2:45 PM
So I wrote this bit of code
        /*Overflow check*/
	if (length > length * 2){
		/*I can't duplicate the string size - it won't fit in the uint16_t!*/
		return false;
	}
And my co-workers are WTFing at it
why?

because you're not checking against anything like 16bit

what's wrong with length > length * 2?

length is not constant?

no
/*Converts an ASCII string into a hex string and writes it to the buffer.
Useful for passing SSIDs to Java, since my Json library can't handle strings with NULLs.*/
static bool writeStringAsHexString(buffer_write_t* writeBuffer, const char* string, uint16_t length){
	/*Overflow check*/
	if (length > length * 2){
		/*I can't duplicate the string size - it won't fit in the uint16_t!*/
		return false;
	}

@Pimgd How can a > 2a ever hold?

2:54 PM
255 max
128 > 128 * 2 = 128 > 256 OVERFLOW! = 128 > 0

Ahh... You are wanting to check for overflow, I would say your code there contains a WTF

why is it a wtf

Because it looks like wtf

so...

I'd opt for if (length * 2 > uint16_t_MAX) {

2:56 PM
@skiwi Broken code

It at least shows that it is related to overflowing

0 > 255 = false

Ah right
because it overflows
How about if (length > uint_t_HALFVALUE) { ?
That would throw less wtfs around imo

255/2 = 127
hmmh yeah
bah

Plus points if you can programatically but statically obtain the halfvalue of a data type

2:59 PM
I can't
The datatypes change per platform
it's fixed here but the include files change per platform
so I can't just #include <limits.h> or something like that

@Pimgd It's C, isn't it?

Yeah

An alternative solution I was thinking about is to stuff the overflow check away in a method call
Then either you keep the wtf-check and hide it via the method name and throw some unit tests at it, or you do it with a halfvalue, but then you get a configuration file/value that you need to update for every platform (datatype)

at that point you're just stuffing the comment in code
but that'd work?
Kinda?

I'd say that if (length > length * 2) { is totally reasonable inside a method called check_overflow(datatype value) {, but it's not reasonable inside an external method call
And it might need to be a macro actually instead of method

3:02 PM
@200_success For the record, I went ahead and deleted Friday as no longer relevant, I also deleted Automagically as it's not really a meme here and not really funny.

Having stated that, I don't think I should censor any of those posts. I'm also not sure whether they should be marked "of historical interest" or just deleted. I'll leave it up to the individuals involved to decide on the appropriate action.

@Vogel612 Once you launch atom, you can install any package you like under file -> settings -> packages
The editor has a built-in package search feature and implements it's own package manager (apm) that uses the node.js package manager (npm)
alternatively, you can do it from the command line as well.
I write all of my SO and CR questions in atom before posting because it has an as-you-type markdown previewer built-in to the editor.

Anyways I can't copy it out to Word and retain the highlighting... for whatever reason.

stuff like "OpenDocument Text"-Elements cannot span more than a single Page
and I was like: How do I make my code-snippets for larger code look pretty now?

I hate fighting with Word, I'd just as soon write the document using HTML and CSS :)

4:53 PM
That's why I use LaTeX.

yea that sounds reasonable @Phrancis

@Phrancis what should this return?

@Morwenn now get the company to switch to latex...

When I do know how to do something, I Google it and copy-paste stuff until it works.

4:54 PM
or make the National Educational Association accept something aside from Word for Documentation..

I don't always understand what I'm doing, but I only have to copy-paste it again if I want to use it again.

@Morwenn that

I don't have to exactly remember how I did it.

is how I write most of my code when I need it done fast..
the making pretty comes after that,...

@Phrancis So it will autochange in 2015?

4:55 PM
Exactly

Ok, i see where its going wrong, give me 5mins

Take your time and thank you :)
I had got the example code from W3Schools so I'm hardly surprised it doesn't work right

Haha

It's still surprising how good they are in google rankings..
but I have to admit... they got their standard SQL down...

@Phrancis try this: <script type="text/javascript">var year = new Date();document.write(year.getFullYear());</script>

4:59 PM
@CodeX all java-devs please start screaming now ;)
