Q: Contact list with java / object oriented Not fully working, inefficient

ElorionI have been working on getting a contact list program working and I have browsed some code samples from this site which has helped. I am a bit stuck, though I think I am close. Would someone be so kind to review the code and give me some pointers on how to close the loop and get it all working? I...

A: Write a function to find the first non-repeated character in a string

VenuThe runtime of the 1st solution you posted is not O(n2). You are just traversing the string twice, which makes it O(2n) => O(n).

Also, is there a way to have a link straight to an answer comment?

The timestamp (now "11 hours ago") of the comment is the link.

Ok, I never thought I would be putting that into comments of code
Explaining the meaning of "iff"

you can do that if and only if the person reading the code is clueless.

honestly, it's pretty mathematical, so anyone reading it who doesn't know what iff means is probably going to have a bad time anyway
but I have that nagging feeling in the back of my head of "are these comments useful, or are they just going to confuse the hell out of whoever is reading this"

A: 'Canonical' questions to help address common issues

Mat's Mug As you've seen, I've experimented a bit. Sorry for jumping the gun and going ahead like this, I hope not too much damage was done. I've given this lots of thought lately, and I come to a conclusion that's radically disagreeing with the idea. Should we have such CW questions/answers? No....

Q: Is this the right way to handle game states?

Mislav BlaževićI'm writing an ORPG. The code below is client side. I have main thread looping in Game::Run: Game::~Game() { PopAllStates(); } void Game::Run() { sf::Event Event; while(Window->isOpen()) { if(LoadQueueMutex.try_lock()) { while(!LoadQueue.empty()) ...

@Jamal Oooo fun. I took a concurrent class and loved it. Is it single computer concurrency, massively parallel or both?

I'm not sure. I haven't fully looked at the class description yet. I would've taken OSes instead, but there wasn't anything open.

4:24 AM
I like upper level CS courses. They're always at least a little interesting.

@Jamal Hope it's not C. Concurrent programming in C is a pain. Classes give a nice way to encapsulate locking. In C, there's nearly no way to avoid it being sprinkled throughout nearly all the code. Even getting tiny programs correct gets non-trivial, and large ones...nearly all have problems, often almost permanently.
2

I only assume C since I've had this processor before, but for a different class. But I also hope it's not something other than C++. I will already learn Java that semester.

@Jamal Do I have any takers for Erlang?

I'll let you know what language it turns out to be. Or, I could just email the professor to find out.

@rolfl Thanks, Monkey! Nice answer you posted. I'll look through it more when at home.

@amon Good attempt at FP there, too bad you are stuck with java 7

@skiwi It's not the question whether FP is possible with Java < 8 (it is), it's just the question who has to compile the ideas down to a low-level representation: me or the compiler. Every language has such “blub” moments where the programmer has to do unnecessary work.

@skiwi I might take a look at when I have time.

@SimonAndréForsberg Have you worked with google maps in-app?

@skiwi Nope, Google Maps is one of the things I haven't used.

8:50 AM
@amon Yeah I agree that FP is better in this case, but now the anonymous methods are bloating the code, but it is still an improvement over the original code in general, and mostly in clarity

@skiwi Would you happen to know if the Java 8 source is available anywhere?

@Loki was in here? Cool. Seems like he came during a chat room downtime though...

@SimonAndréForsberg It is... In your IDE you can step into classes for sure
and also I guess there's a src.zip
Also is this a codesmell? I found it in some tutorial:
public class MainActivity extends Activity implements GooglePlayServicesClient.ConnectionCallbacks,GooglePlayServicesClient.OnConnecti‌onFailedListener,LocationListener

@skiwi Nope, implementing a whole bunch of interfaces isn't a code smell, I'd almost say it's the opposite.

But in a MainActivity?

There's nothing wrong with that IMO

9:21 AM
Ok, well I can just imagine something implementing 30 interfaces would be kinda hard to understand

As long as the MainActivity doesn't get unnecessarily big. If it's useful to implement it in the MainActivity, there's nothing wrong in it.
I think you won't need to implement 30 interfaces. There's a big difference of 3 interfaces and 30.
A difference of 27 to be exact.

@skiwi That's why some people designed concepts (or type classes).

That's great, I have currently 3 starred messages saying "Monking!", "lol" and "rofl". Rationale: if you want to get stars, post no more than one word.

@syb0rg On the SO question, it does sound like he is looking for (a kind of) code review.
"Can anyone please to check this code and tell me whether it is correct or not."

but also that the code is not doing what he expects ... is not working.

The only problem is that he's saying he's having "an issue" with the code.
@rolfl Exactly. But he doesn't exactly say that so that it's clear on SO.
They should however, have asked him "what is the issue?"

Morning @Jamal
Question .....

Morning!

2:43 PM
If I am going through the non-tagged android questions and fixing them, why are you fixing them again? .... ;-)

Because I like to fix things (again). :-)

Should I be a lot more aggressive with the formatting/text editing ... ?

I don't see too many people making changes like those. Sometimes I tend to really take out unneeded text. I suppose it's up to you.

Also, I think I feel offended that we see you pop up in the edit queue before you pop up in the 2nd monitor... ;-)
2

And to user3463336: Please state exactly what the issue is. (which results are you getting, and which results did you expect?) Then you don't have to be bounced back and forth between sites. — Simon André Forsberg 42 secs ago

2:47 PM
I sort of consider flags and edits a priority. Yeah, I can get on chat first, but sometimes I forget.

@rolfl It's Jamal we're talking about, are you surprised?

Nope ;-) , and hammer away at those flags and edits .... don't mean to distract you from your duties ;-)

Most of these edits aren't part of them anyway; it's something I've done way before then. But I haven't found anything else this morning that required moderator attention.

Also, I have a question about this one: codereview.stackexchange.com/posts/45346/revisions
Note the very bottom of the first edit.... should that have been flagged somehow, what is the CR policy on that. I think the edit and title change pushed that question to Hot Questions.
But the question did not get my upvote... out of spite, I guess.

Mine, neither. But it was mostly because the OP never fixed that indentation (tabs in code are really starting to annoy me). I was going to fix it myself, but it was already mentioned in an answer.

2:57 PM
But the language edit was handled correctly/appropriately?

@JerryCoffin Concurrent programming in C has one advantage over C++: no exceptions. So It's OK to have lock/unock statements without a lock_guard class. The Windows 'NT' kernel is/was written in C.

We have both @Mat'sMug and @syb0rg for artificial intelligence.

@ChrisW Love it, I'm gonna take a look at that later.
For now, I'm stuck with this:
StackTrace for thread pool-1-thread-1
java.lang.Object.wait(Native Method)
java.lang.Object.wait(Object.java:503)
org.apache.batik.util.SoftReferenceCache.requestImpl(SoftReferenceCache.java:131)
org.apache.batik.ext.awt.image.URLImageCache.request(URLImageCache.java:81)
org.apache.batik.ext.awt.image.spi.ImageTagRegistry.checkCache(ImageTagRegistry.java:94)
org.apache.batik.bridge.SVGImageElementBridge.createImageGraphicsNode(SVGImageElementBridge.java:227)
org.apache.batik.bridge.SVGImageElementBridge.buildImageGraphicsNode(SVGImageElementBridge.java:177)
And I really mean stuck. The program never gets out of there. I think I might be dealing code like @Mat'sMug had a while ago.

In the dump you should be able to get a reference to the monitor it is waiting on.
(I don't see any lock notations in the trace through, maybe quite low in the trace).

@rolfl Nope, it's from Thread.getAllStackTraces
Either way, it's nothing I have to deal with now. It's only been caused by one SVG image so far.

OK, if you do a kill-3 or a Ctrl \ it will dump all the 'monitor' conditions......
You can identify which threads are holding which locks, and so on.

@rolfl Remind me about that if I have to deal with this bug later on :) I don't expect to deal with this again in a month.

Q: First Time HTML5/CSS Site

NegglyI am working on my first HTML5/CSS web site and, like all of my first-time projects, they end up cumbersome, crude, and hard to work with when changes need to be made later in the life cycle. I am attaching some code with a small amount of HTML and CSS. I have read up on CSS and HTML and, after q...

@Simon don't... please

@SimonAndréForsberg - how old is your batik library: issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=40167

A: First Time HTML5/CSS Site

Dave YarwoodThis looks great! Very nice, especially for a beginner. I really have no criticisms. Does your site look the way you want it in the browser?

@Malachi definitely...

@Vogel612 thank you

@rolfl When I looked at that artificial intelligence guys answer, I concluded I don't know jack-squat about AI.

@syb0rg I am surrounded by people who make me feel stupid when they talk AI.... I know little too.

I just tried my hand at ethical code review.

A: Speed dating algorithm to select the pair of dates

MorwennComputationally speaking, I don't have anything to add what has already been said. @amon did a really comprehensive review of your code. However, there are some serious sociological and/or ethical flaws in your code. I would say that, genderly speaking, it could be made more generic: Sexual ori...

4:02 PM
@Morwenn - please tell me your code matches men with women....

@rolfl it looks like it also works in a different way......

I gave hint to produce code that would be easier to extend to consider Ménage à trois speed dating problems.

Damn the french and their Ménage à trois, Galavanting Presidents, and, is it true, that the French call 'French Kissing' - 'English Kissing' ?

That's not true.
We call that "bisou avec la langue (kiss with the tongue)"

huh, my sources are wrong.... and, that's just disgusting....

4:08 PM
And also sometimes "French kiss" since it's widely used overseas.

euphemisms have a point.

However, we now have a dedicated word for "ménage à trois": it's "trouple".

That common, huh?

Not common, nor generally accepted.
And it is already hard enough to maintain a good relationship with two people... let alone with three.

I somehow get the feeling we're drifting off to somewhere we don't want to go...

4:15 PM
Worry not. I'll be leaving soon :)

@rolfl When I was young, I'm sure I was told that "baiser" means "to kiss".

"baiser" is rather polysemic.

isn't it also some kind of sweet?

Myeah, I would not advise people to use the word baiser unless they are fluent in French, you might get slapped
2
you have to know how to use it

Generally speaking it's used for either "kiss" or "fuck". More generally for "fuck".

4:24 PM
Right, I think I am regretting this digression ;-)

Well, whatever. I'm leaving. See you later xD

I speak two languages.... English, and Afrikaans.... one is useful.

Q: angular directive with use of scope.$parent and $timeout

user17893For the over eager people: check out this plunker I create a directive which has to add buttons on top of input fields, to select the language you want to input. This is used on forms, such as a product form. A product has translations (i.e. has a description that is language dependant) Things...

French will get me in trouble ;-)

You generally don't need to know French whatsoever.

4:26 PM
@Morwenn canada has some french-only provinces...

@Vogel612 But even so, people will probably be able to speak English.

but @rolfl one can assume, that the canadian french is somewhat different from the french french

@Morwenn I spent an uncomfortable week in Paris once....

@rolfl stop right there..

Canadian French is funny :D

4:27 PM
Was on a tour though Europe, and we rolled the tour bus on the peripherique ?

@Jamal i think it's time for the vacuum about right now

I was one of 6 who was able to physically wlk away from the accident.... but I spent the next week visiting people in 11 different hospitals.

I got lost on the périphérique once...

phew... crisis averted.

I learned enough to know that if I spoke Afrikaans instead of English, I got further ... ;-)

4:28 PM
@Vogel612 For what? :P

@Jamal i somehow had the feeling rolfl might take us on an excourse into an area where I really didn't want to go...

cough

I'm really leaving this time. You won't miss me :)

Grats, @Malachi - !

@rolfl thank you

(LET THE HOLYWAR BEGINS!!!11) I believe it's more apropriate and more readable here, than while. Or goto_is_bad is a dogma? Anyway, may be there are some another notes? — user2198121 7 mins ago
