3:00 PM
He's back again :(

Howdy.

Hello Chris. :)
I mean AH.

Ignoring a user minimizes their avatar to 1/4 of original size

Also: Just got another Necromancer. :>
Thanks @lol
and he's gone. :p

@kleinfreund put on ignore. He's suspended and destroyed, yet there we go. As I said, dogs, sleeping, yada.

3:00 PM
nope

Are we supposed to reject edits that are "too minor"? Or is this a question for meta not chat?

I say yes

@ChrisW hi.... and I am never certain what the threshold of too minor is ....

subjective, but if you think it's too minor, reject it.

^ ought to qualify as too minor if anything does.
It's enforced/important on some boards, I don't know why.

3:03 PM
@ChrisW I've seen worse.

@rolfl Nope, have I missed something?

@ChrisW I'd have rejected as too minor, or possibly edited to remove the "Thanks!"

I'll leave for now, see you in about two hours when I'm home

So there's no policy about "too minor": just individual/subjective preference; and it's not important here.

Bye, @Simon

3:05 PM
well we want to avoid people "gaming" the edit suggestions into farming rep score, with just minor edits left and right.
someone needs a life...

codereview.stackexchange.com/q/40253/14625 : is it me, or did (s)he not implement hasA ?

@ChrisW - I have seen a number of that person's edits come through recently. I rejected 75%.... but the odd good one does come through.

also , someone is back with a vengeance

I approved this one: codereview.stackexchange.com/review/suggested-edits/16436 because it pretties up a link...

ok

3:09 PM
But I rejected most of them because he adds bold and other crap too.

loves formatting, eh?

There are more and more of them...

My threshold for reject/approve is that it has to change something of significance. Unfortunately, I have not yet figured out to my satisfaction whwhat the real definition of Significance is..... but bolding questions, and bulleting lists is not enough.

I am out of options and I have to run. So perhaps @balpha could look into this directly.
@SimonAndréForsberg Or just bring on that MSO question already.

SUPER PING ACTIVATED!

3:12 PM
Kthxbai.
Lators.

Thanks

later!

Bye!

Bye :)
Posted the logo to Meta. Thanks for bringing up this idea.
@syb0rg The current challenge is not really up to date, right?

@kleinfreund No, and we haven't had a challenge in a while either.
Also, I upvoted the meta logo post.

A: What should our logo and site design look like?

kleinfreundI looked through the major SE sites and their logos and noticed they're nice and minimalistic. So I grabbed my sketch blog and a pen. This is what I came up with: I also made a little graphic for the Code Review Community: What do you think? Suggestions? Critique?

Whoa, apparently I just reached 10K on all the SE sites!

3:17 PM
This is awesome. Now call me picky, I think the padding inside the square should be about 1.5x what it is, making the magnifier just a bit smaller.

@lol This is a good thing. On smaller sizes, one might not be able to distinc between the magnifier and a white background.

With that meta post our chatroom population has grown :)

Hello to the new ones.

Hello @all
@rolfl Already 10 upvotes

A: How to make string.Format template more readable?

medaLike @jesse said you can have a custom method, maybe pass a user object to that method. Something like this: class User { public int AutoLoginRequestTemplate { get; set; } public string username { get; set; } public string password { get; set; } public string Val1 { get; set; } ...

Someone's getting nuked

Martijn BuurmanI'm creating a small online multiplayer game in NodeJS and I'm wondering if I'm "doing it right". @syb0rg I remove the current challenge therefor, right?

@kleinfreund ya

@kleinfreund Fine by me.

3:32 PM
Also there are a few scripts added. For example Modernizer, jQuery and so on. We don't really need these at the moment. We should drop them as well.

Well, I gess the rash of self-flagging posts has drawn a crowd to our quiet corner of CodeReview ... ;-) Anyone want to answer some CodeReview Questions while they are here?
Oh, and I see we have Osama Bin Laden here as well.... We have quite the expired collection of the infamous today.

@kleinfreund Do first, ask for forgiveness later. Any objections can be raised as comments on the pull request that would merge it into the live site.

Oh yes, maybe someone wants to answer my first question which still doesn't has a new answer. :p

Hello @TildalWave
I recognize you from IT and Space!

hey

3:35 PM
@rolfl Flagging it in Chat won't do you any good.

A lot of mods are on right now.

only here on "mod business" but I see that's sorted so ...

Flag the message on your site's meta, the appropriate mods should handle it. Chat moderator flags notify all moderators on Stack Exchange.

@TildalWave We still have Osama

@syb0rg User flagged own post and I wasn't sure what to make of it. I guess others neither so we all came here :)
@syb0rg well... shrugs

Q: Enum in database vs. mapping attribute to integer via ini-file?

HedgeI'm writing a web-application with PHP with a friend. We have a few data-types with 3-10 different values each. I included them in the MySQL-database as enums with all of the different values directly. He insists on having a file mapping all possible values to integer-values (which are persisted...

@rolfl you want +90 MSO rep reversed?

welcome new chatters

this is definitely record-breaking 2nd Monitor attendance!

Maybe some of them will stay :P

hehe and mods from all over SE still coming in :)

3:39 PM
Yeah, welcome everyone.

@rolfl Do you have a link to the migrated post?

@kleinfreund Yeah, welcome almost everyone ;)

Who is the resident Java guy, can someone confirm that codereview.stackexchange.com/q/40253/14625 did not implement has A

should have know I would find @kleinfreund here.... casting shadows over all my CSS answers!!!

@rolfl is our Java guru AFAIK

3:41 PM
Yeah, you're right.
I'm sorry @Malachi. :o

If anyone is interested ... I deleted the MSO post.... I figured it had all the attention it needed.
And I got: You've earned the "Nice Question" badge for Adolf Hitler user and Icon. See your profile.

@kleinfreund no it's good. you know more about HTML5 and CSS than I do

@konijn I'd ask what the actual question is.

@kleinfreund I need to read through the rest of the missing manual yet. I have only grazed the surface of this wonderful world

3:42 PM
@rolfl I think it's a legit post, depending on Tim's eventual answer it could be useful in the future, whenever chatrooms get stalked like this.

What the? How can someone with a deleted account associated with chat keep coming in?

@TildalWave They keep creating new accounts.

@TildalWave create a sock puppet account

And using proxies/Tor

@konijn I think that Container hasa One, Two, and Three.

3:44 PM
@rolfl please undelete it… the whole affair pointed out some interesting problems (you can't flag a username or avatar as offensive), and it would be good to have a URL to point to in such discussions
3

Post has been converted to CW, will undelete.

Hmmm no, it would then have to show the new associated account for the chat profile too

^^ I agree with @amon, although I can't star (theoretically starred)

I think someone just has to destroy the chat user too

@lol tell me what I should star. I have some left. ;)

3:45 PM
Where's Churchill?

But you still can use TS.

yeah, done ;)

@syb0rg I'm about to send a pull request now.

@kleinfreund Merged. Looks good: codereviewcommunity.github.io

Ah, I see. Will work on the favicon later.
Kinda knew this would happen. :p

3:49 PM
@kleinfreund just saw your new logo - isn't it better with a larger margin? :)

:D
margin or padding? :p

yeah padding I guess depends if you're talking about the box or the magnifier ;)

I already added some padding to it.
Oh. dang. Now I got you.
Yep, it's better indeed.

did you try rounding the tip of the handle?
or maybe not

@kleinfreund The CR needs to be 'bolder', and the gap between them slightly bigger. It does not scale down to favicon well enough otherwise. ... just sayin

3:55 PM
@syb0rg Thanks for merging it, but there is no need to merge a pull request immediately. You'd usually take your time to review the changes, and leave time for others to do the same.

@rolfl That's what I'm working on currently.

And the colour has to be something onther than beta-blue

Even in the bigger scales the line needs to be bigger. The gap as well.

why? don't like beta-blue?

@amon I did. I looked at the differences between the files.

Q: Code reuse while keeping meaning clear and avoiding unforseen consequences

Reed G. LawI like to reuse code as much as possible and keeps things DRY. But I'm afraid that sometimes it creates too many layers of indirection. It then becomes a chore to find where code exists that is relevant to the problem at hand. I'll give a couple of examples. In the first example, I'm using inher...

That should be "BETA-blue" .... right?

@amon Granted though, it was a quick scan through.

@syb0rg That fast? You've reviewed 44 changed files with 3,201 additions and 1,628 deletions in about a minute? ;-)

@amon I may have only glanced at a file or two ;)

I probably should commit smaller bits and make seperate pull requests for every part?
And it's quite like beta-blue, not exactly the same color tho

3:59 PM
@kleinfreund That would be better, yes.

Okay, no problem.

11th answer. Just protected the question.

@lol.upvote Good choice.
Does anyone have some votes to spare for that new user?

I'd actually downvote that answer if I had votes left. It's not a review.

@lol.upvote It does point him to further reading about the subject.

4:05 PM
yeah. I particularly like advice #5 It's better to avoid Java.

"It's better to avoid Java" - This is very opinionated, and you don't say why to avoid it. — syb0rg 10 secs ago

I'm sorry, but this is not a useful review of the asker's code. Sentences like “It's better to avoid Java” and “Rewrite your program in Haskell” misses the point of a code review: to point things out things in the code that can could be improved (and how, and why). You actually have a few interesting links regarding the why, but miss the first step: the what. Language choice is not a valid “what”. — amon 3 mins ago
(why doesn't one-boxing work with https links?)

@amon Idk, but I don't like it since I use HTTPS-Everywhere.
Also, your comment was much better worded than mine, upvoted.

Although I like the beta-blue, maybe it's a good idea, not to use it because, well, it's beta-blue and we don't want to be beta anymore, right?

^^^ that's my thinking ^^^

4:14 PM

@kleinfreund I like that. Maybe a darker hue?

Navy?

Oh, what about green? Not matrix green. A nice green.

Just posted a comment pointing Mysticial to the Pi question:
@Mysticial It looks like you would be perfect to review this Pi benchmarking C code on Code Review. — syb0rg 1 min ago

It would be cool to see him review that, since he holds the world record for the most digits of Pi calculated.

Malachiyou have a lot of if statements in your SQL, this screams at me that you are doing something in your SQL that should be done in the application, and that this SQL should be separated into two distinct stored procedures. the benefits faster stored procedures use an actual coding language to d...

@TimPost No, but if you'd write some code to make one, we'd be happy to review your code!

Just reading it

Are you kidding? I get paid to chase Hitler around the Internet and destroy him? Hello, dream job.

Can't vote, tho.

All kidding aside, We're mitigating this rather well but he's ... quite persistent.

@ChrisW I also have seen those flags recently. Haven't acted on them. I think the least they should do is to write "Here is one possible alternative of your code, quite different from yours."
I'm not sure if there's been any meta CR question about code-only answers? For some questions, I think code only answers can be appropriate.

Top reason to star questions on CR: Vote limit reached, bookmarked.
@Simon Do you have an example?

Earlier @200_success was saying that a shorter answer is a better answer; so I don't understand why he objects to a code-only review.
Welcome to Code Review. Code-only answers do not constitute a review. Please explain how your changes improve the original code. (@peterSO's post is not a proper answer either, and should have been flagged long ago as well.) — 200_success 30 mins ago

@TimPost: You are so lucky. I have to go to class after a while. Booooooooo.

@kleinfreund The answer to which ^ is a comment.

Oh, he's actually registering. Fancy.

I mean an example where a code only answer is appropriate.

@Seth Is he a smart one, our duplicated-unwelcome user?

A: Minimal Game of Life in C#

Jesse C. SlicerHere's a take on it, that merely does some cleanup of the existing code. Beyond the changes shown below, I would also highly recommend separating the UI logic from the game logic. One error I found: cell.Margin.All.Equals(0); // Margins doesn't do anything at all. What I think you mean is: ...

@SimonAndréForsberg I don't understand. He's a spammer, a persistent one.

^ If you stripped all verbiage from this "Game of Life" answer it would still be a good answer IMO: a slightly rewritten version of the OP code.

@Seth You said that he's "actually registering. Fancy." so I assumed he was "smarter" / "more developed" than what you are used to.

@SimonAndréForsberg Ahh, yes. Most of the spammers don't take the time to register with a real email.

Aha. I can imagine that.

I understand why "code only" isn't as good as "code with explanation"; so "code only" => not a great answer; I was wondering whether it's true/fair to say, as others have said, "not an acceptable answer" and flag it.
