If your code is working but slow, then this is more properly asked on the StackExchange site Code Review Stack Exchange. That said, a hash-table of strings isn't a bad idea for lookup speed. You want to keep your load-factor less than 0.6. The openSSL lh_strhash() is a very good string hashing function that will minimize collision for most sane strings.
