hi chat

@Dair how's it going?

@Phrancis Good, you?

Good, just waiting for CaptainObvious to post my new question :D
First Q of 2019

6:44 AM
Yes

Nice. Having fun with C#?

So far, I am indeed. Just feels like a massive toolbox I can tap into with very little effort. That's unlike my other coding experiences so far (Python, JavaScript, Java)

0
Q: House plan design (Head First C#)

PhrancisI've been working through the book Head First C# and this is an exercise from chapter 7, which is about interfaces and abstract classes. I'd like a review on any and all aspects. My code ended up quite a bit different than the book's solution, because it's a few years old and I think "holds bac...

Hey!
There we go.

Slow RSS feed

6:47 AM
@CaptainObvious @Phrancis I'd add whether the overall class design was required by the author.

@Zeta Good point. It was. I'll clarify

Lol. Hmm.. Interesting, here I thought C# was like a Java clone and that they were fairly similar...
I didn't realize C# had that massive of a toolbox.

@Phrancis Good to know. That would have been my first review item, if I actually knew C#.

Maybe I'll look into it in the future...

@Dair The .NET framework that comes with C# (and F#, VB.NET) is massive, I could hardly believe it

6:51 AM
Hmm. Are there any linguistical (non-framework) features you find interesting about it?

If I get the point, you don't need. Just pass the Board instance to the Pawn method (def legal_moves(board)). But it is unclear where @position came from. Maybe you can update the question with what you want to accomplish, somebody could show a different approach. Check this: codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/10312/…iGian 14 secs ago

It's like Python: batteries included. Although C# also contains a nuclear power station and the industrial wires to connect them.

^that

dang, sounds hardcore lol

@Dair Well, it's pretty standard, business-looking language, but there are lots of linguistic shortcuts (i.e. sugar) that make the code much more succinct than Java

6:53 AM
"more succinct than Java" tbf... there are lots of languages like that. haha.

You're not lying
But yeah, having the whole Microsoft .NET toolbox + a nice, clear, succinct language together is a happy middle

The path of moderation.
On a different subject: Has anyone here programmed in any dependently typed languages?

@Dair What are those?

There are some functional languages that support dependent types.

@Dair No. I read many articles, but my usual programming languages do not support them (at the moment)

6:59 AM
Oof, seems very CS-ish.

@Zeta :( I wish more people did lol. The information out there is scarce and I really think the idea of proving properties is super cool.

I've played around with Lisp a bit, but I don't know that it necessarily falls into the dependent types category

You can simulate some properties of DT with DataKinds in Haskell, but again, I haven't used them much in practice. I only played around with Singleton types.

@Phrancis I'm not entirely sure about dependent types, but there is a lisp that can prove theorems: cs.utexas.edu/users/moore/acl2
@Zeta Do you program in haskell for your job?

@Dair If it's just about proving properties, there are some add-on provers that can check properties on code statically. It's really helpful in C++ for example.
@Dair Apart from rapid prototyping for some interface tests: no. I program in C and C++, but mostly C++(14) with Qt.

7:04 AM
@Dair Cool. I'm personally not too much into CS theorems and such, I'm mostly just an IT guy wanting to get work done :)

@Zeta That sounds super cool, C++ is scary lmao. So many different ways, so many wrong ways. So many wrong ways that can be right ways in the right contexts.
Or at least that was my impression...

Nah. That sounds right.

But hey, if all else fails, I can just write C and ask C++ questions on here, am i rite?

@Dair However, I think that's more or less an educational problem, to be honest. There are tons of C++ tutorials, that teach you C first, and then C++. They often fall flat on both accounts, and you learn a weird mixture of C, and C with classes, but not the actual essence of either.
2

@Dair Yep

7:10 AM
@Dair If you write C and tag it as question, I'll point out the 12 missing casts, VLAs and then vote as "not working" :P

@Zeta I've done a lot of rust recently for my spare projects.

@Duga No, it's not. That user asks for additional features, not for a review. >.<

I really wish there was a Rust w/o the borrow checker lmao

7:14 AM
@Dair There is. It's called unsafe and you drop down to T* and mut T*. Welcome to the hell you just tried to escape.

Rust has like a nice beginner friendly set of tools with a complex borrow checker lol.
@Zeta "This is fine."
I'm just lazy lol. I want my programs to run, but I want them to be fast and I can't do it with Python rip.

@Ludisposed I think I'm missing something, because I can't find the line that states he's willing to pay for anything.

@Mast It got deleted already, there was an "answer" willing to pay for help

@Ludisposed Ah.
@200_success Expressing doubt about the code is fine. Not knowing whether it completes all edge cases successfully is fine. Nobody has tested against all edge cases. At times, the community is too harsh, yes. But what do you think of questions where OP appears as if he simply has no clue whether it works? Or, should we create a meta to find out where the line is and provide a couple of example statements which are and aren't acceptable?
After all, if the OP doesn't know whether the code works, how would we know? How could we even help? There's a reason such questions get closed. And yes, at times it goes wrong. If you have suggestions in this regard, I'll ask a meta question about what is and isn't acceptable and you/me/others can write answers to it. Could be used as a canonical reference next time someone has to be educated on not being too harsh.
Just thinking out loud here.

I'm pretty sure that you can't make a determination just by looking at the text. You have to consider both the text and the apparent quality of the code, as well as the apparent amount of effort they put into the question.

3:18 PM
You can't make a solid determination by just looking at the text, no. But let's phrase it like this: why would the code deserve a close look if the text explains OP isn't sure the code even works (at all)? Wouldn't that directly violate the rule that code has to work to the best of OP's knowledge?

OP isn't sure the code fully works, that does not mean it does not work... instead of DV, write an answer : Write test that way you can be sure
Just run the code, to check if it actually works before closing, Words can be deceiving, not everyone is a native English speaker
