maybe we can talk about something more... "productive"?

38 mins ago, by Phrancis
I'm having a weird feeling... wrote some code on Saturday... coming back to it now... I don't remember what problem I was trying to solve
Well I kind of do, but the test are failing, so I need to change the tests or change the code
The code's clearly not working right, so I should start there

Actually, I have a question, sort of a general question
Suppose I'm creating a programming language
Is it better to have inline functions, or non-inline functions?
Any thoughts?

2:30 AM
"fifteenth" is a difficult word to spell
(not related @Ethan)

lol I can tell ;-)

@EthanBierlein From an unwashed SQL dude, I'd say

Just posted a pattern for implementations on it

So, I recommend waiting for someone more experienced than I :)

Can anyone take a looksy

2:33 AM
it should be coming in the feeds soon

Alright

Templates are cool:
template <typename T>
T max(T a, T b)
{
    return a > b ? a : b;
}

Are you guys talking about the same thing?

I'm not sure if the implementation is correct but its just for fun really

2:34 AM
wait
I'm not sure
For example, I don't have to specify the type:
max(10, 12);
But I can if I want:

max<float>(10.5, 12.6);

@EthanBierlein That's not what you're talking about is it?

no
Inline functions are different

OK good, we're clear nothing to see :)

2:36 AM
Would you like me to explain?
Or do you already know what inline functions are?

Me? I wouldn't understand. I was just checking if you and @june1992 were talking about the same thing

It's actually very simple

The design pattern

Trust me, it's not crazy functional-programming nonsense

I've probably seen inline functions, maybe used them by accident.

2:38 AM
Let's say I defined the following function:
int pow(int a, int b) { return a ** b; }
Now let's say that our magical compiler has an -inline option.
If we enable this, then the following code:
pow(10, 10);
Is compiled to this:
10 ** 10;

ok

Hence the name "inline"

Go on while ... HOLY CARP @CaptainObvious
@EthanBierlein Go on, sorry on behalf of Cap'n

Inlining is often used for functional crazy stuff too :-P

2:42 AM
That was it

O.

Someone clearly doesn't know how to validate emails:

@EthanBierlein It's normally helpful to have both options. Going for always inlined or never inlined doesn't seem useful.

I use SQLCMD variables at work where the values in the script are replaced before the script is run, is that what inline functions are (approximately)?

sort of
inline variables might be a better name

2:45 AM
Inlining means the function call is dispensed with and the code implementing the function inserted where the call would be.

:setvar myTable "Foo"
select Bar from $(myTable);

Can make faster execution at the cost of code size growth

That's a difficult trade-off

The compiler can work directly with registers rather than pushing and popping the stack

Wait
How would a recursive function be inlined?

2:46 AM
And it can be used to implement tail recursion

Oh I think I get it now. Albeit, I'll admit not having an opinion on the matter

Would that even work?

It can be done easily if the function is tail recursive. Because then a new stack doesn't need to be created on each iteration. It just becomes a while loop
If you have lazy evaluation, then there are even richer options

method inlining is considered to be a significant performance advantage.

oh, hello @rolfl!

2:50 AM
As long as the function can be made productive, the recursion doesn't even happen. You just return the first value and a thunk to fetch the next when requested, if ever. GHC is really good at spotting that. And at avoiding boxing/unboxing for the same reason.

(as itsbruce says, it comes at the expense of executable size (not code size).l

I was under the impression that you were gone for the night. I guess not. :-)

I got roped in to a work discussion

And at eliminating intermediate collections/objects
@rolfl Executable size, yes :-)

The major benefits of inlined function calls are (as I am aware):
1. no stack frame allocations (and associated register saving/purging/reverting)
2. no long jumps in code paths (and no trampolining)
3. reduced register churn and cleaner L1 cache lines
major drawbacks, as I understand them:
1. muddled stack traces (harder to compare core dumps to source code
2. larger executables
3. tougher incremental compilations

2:56 AM
Well, I'm off to bed. It was nice chatting with all of you tonight! :-)

Rust and Haskell both use inlining to remove the speed overhead of generics at the cost of executable grown
Go would be a sounder and faster language of Rob Pike would be honest about that. Compile times would go up some, to be fair.

night

Java uses inlining because inlining makes sense, and Java normally does the best things ;-)

Let's not mention Arrays...

3:13 AM
1. scanf("%[^\n]%*c", str); is weak. If user types "\n", then scanf() fails and the '\n' remains in stdin. str has random data in it. The return value of scanf() is not checked - abd. 2. Post this on the code review site instead. codereview.stackexchange.comchux 1 min ago

@Duga If someone else points out the code might be broken, does it then become broken and off-topic on CR?

@Legato Hey!

This question could be suitable for Code Review, as long as (a) your code works as intended, (b) your code is real code, rather than example code, and (c) your code is included in the body of the question. If you wish for a peer review to improve all aspects of your code, please post it on Code Review. — Phrancis 12 secs ago

I'd urge you to look at some of my other answers. I will often provide longer explanations when appropriate. But sometimes, all you are doing is condensing syntax and using some built in functions the OP might not know about. The code is the explanation, and further explanation would be redundant. If this breaks the rules of the site, so be it. Downvote me. It's a poor rule imo that doesn't respect the judgment of the poster. — Jonah 38 secs ago

OP's accept dumb/bad answers all the time
If we didn't still downvote them, the whole of SE would be much less useful.

I have, and upvoted a few. Just trying to help here, upvotes tend to come easy when you take the time to describe what changes you're making and why - note that I can't modify what the post notice says, it just so happens to be the most appropriate one that we use for code-only answers. I like the approach, the naming is excellent and indeed the code speaks. You might be on to something though, I like your reasoning; feel free to start a meta discussion. I'd remove my downvote, but it's frozen by now :( — Mat's Mug ♦ 57 secs ago

Might be more suitable for Code Review since you don't actually have a problem. — Dave Newton 40 secs ago
I've voted to close this question as too broad; it would actually be a good fit for Code Review... the only thing that's keeping me from flagging for migration is that you haven't implemented the last part. Feel free to implement it, and put it up on CR for peer review. See you there! — Mat's Mug 29 secs ago

Looks good to me. You should consider proposing it to Code Review if you are interested in actual comments. Just two quick ones though: 1/ omp master doesn't imply any barrier at the end so be careful that other threads might get started on what follows before the master parts is done; and 2/ which is strongly connect with my 1st point, be careful that whenever a non-blocking communication has been initiated, you must not use the communication buffers until the communication is completed. Yes.... and that's the right format too.

I've been struggling now with handling dates##UserCreationStartBound:date?'2015-01-16'##
Seems to cause problems

Don't use date, use string.
(and don't quote it).

hmm, that would be a easy solution (that I didn't try <,<)

Also, I found it easier to use relative dates, like, "weeks ago", or "months ago".
declare @epoch as datetime = DATEADD(WEEK, - ##Weeks:int?104## - 1, CURRENT_TIMESTAMP)
^^^ that will get the date Weeks in the past
(104 is "2 years" worth of weeks)

and then you can just use the @epoch in your query?

I guess I need to apologize to my parents, friends, and the staff at Chuck E. Cheese's for all the times I called the cops on them.

It would have more appropriate to start with a LayoutManager based class. You would then need to determine the "base" (or normal) ratio, maybe based on the preferredSize of the component, then from this you could calculate the required size need to facilitate the requirements of the actual physical layout (as the ratio would only be a small part). If you're after a review, it would better to post the code on codereview instead — MadProgrammer 43 secs ago
@EJP, that's exactly why I want to automate this and stop any discussion on whitespaces during code review. @BassemRedaZohdy - your comment is really hard to understand. I feel you have a broken understanding of how Streams are supposed to be used. In each of your recent questions you are doing things which are "backwards" in your implementation, and I don't know how to say that more politely, but there was a time when streams were an "upstream" fight for me to use, but then it "clicked" and I now use the streams to help with the flow. My impression is that you are still trying to swim upstream, and you will have more success if you use the streams in the directions they naturally work. — rolfl 27 secs ago
Bear trap...... possibility

no not really..

Do you all agree with giving this question a protected status?

Yea, sure

Meh, protected questions are a weak defense, with as many downsides as upsides.

Well, it in the least, a defense.

1:32 PM
usually I'd do that when the answers are not spam-deleted.

The big downside is that it prevents new users from answering questions.

spam-deletion is quick enoug.

which is also it's upside... ;-)
I see protected questions as only being useful for things currently on a 'hot list'.
and the protection should be temporary.
nada to see here.

Zak
I thought protecting questions was for "If this were asked today, it wouldn't be on-topic, but it's got historic/cultural/other value, so we'll freeze and preserve it"

@Zak That's "Historical lock".

Zak
1:35 PM
Oh, then what's "protecting" for?

Protection just means that only people who have earned 10 or more reputation by participating in this site, can answer.

Zak
what's the point of that?
Let me rephrase

It prevents "drive-by" answers.

Zak
why do we need that when there are already tools for first posts / spam deletion

@Zak Preventative is better than curative

1:37 PM
@SuperBiasedMan - except, it's not.

@rolfl Well it's the theory at least. I don't know about how it works in practice.

@rolfl Do we get many of them in this 'hood?

Many people are first introduced to this site by seeing something interesting in the hot questions section.
By stopping them from answering we are saying F-off to people who have things to contribute - even if their contributions will need fixing, or removing.

@rolfl and he downvoted your answer??!

if we are getting nothing but low quality answers, (more than 1) then that is a good time to protect the question

1:39 PM

The only times I have seen protection help on this site, are when some question has marginal review-based quality, and lots of people come in with stack-overflow like responses "Do it this way" or "do it that way" .... which are not reviews.

@Malachi You and I have always fundamentally disagreed with protection. I feel you overuse it.

if there is a spammer, spamming a post over and over again, and no mod around, and the spammer is under 10 rep, then protect
and keep and eye on him, flag him
right?

usually spammers hit the rate limits pretty fast

@rolfl I do agree with this
but hey, you give anyone a shiny new tool and they want to use it a few times, right?

@Malachi A spammer should be handled with spam flags.
@Malachi Sure, that is something I understand... but, as I say, it is a broken tool...

1:43 PM
@rolfl agreed

protecting questions is really just to put a speedbump on HNQ's, to prevent non-review answers from users that aren't yet familiar with the type of answers we give on this site...

but it has a use. when a question is hot and new users keep coming in and giving one liners that don't help anything, then we should slow things down, otherwise the mods are going to get a ton of flags that don't need to be there.

Q: Swing Component Resizer Class

Patrick WallaceIve created a class to help resize Swing components while maintaining their aspect ratio within a container. The class works by creating an instance and adding a container's components to it, then the SwingResizer's resizeComponents() method can be invoked whenever the container's size is change...

if it is a good question and we are getting people that are not taking us seriously, protect and flag. but unprotecting it is the thing we need to do more swiftly

thing is, it's usually the not-so-good question that prompt SO-style answers...

FGITW people are the ones that usually give crappy answers trying to get freebie reputation and ▲▲
usually happens right away and then stops

FGITW = ?

Fastest Gun In The West

Q: Python code to process plain text file of many fulltext articles from news publications

miconI'm relatively new to programming and have started writing some code for work. This script is something I wrote that I'd like to have someone comment on. Am I doing anything silly, stupid or totally unnecessary? Am I making things more complicated than they need to be? This script takes a plai...

@Mat'sMug I thought you'd like to know that when my co-dev googled "strong typed configuration settings", a CR question you answered was the top Google hit.

Q: English Checkers - Python 2.7

AvneriumI've written this English checkers game. Meanwhile, it's a human vs. human game, although it is easily extensible to a game between other players (such as a computer one). I hope it is not too long for this website. """Play English Checkers. see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_draughts ""...

and fix the mess I created?

> I hope it is not too long for this website.
Only Mugs make posts that are too long for this website ;)

"It requires no stretch of the imagination to conclude that the current helmet craze is likely to have been propagated by the Government, possibly with the involvement of the FCC."
"We hope this report will encourage the paranoid community to develop improved helmet designs to avoid falling prey to these shortcomings."
Absolutely brilliant :)

Q: Highlight Current Link

Sirwan AfifiI'm using this technique for highlighting current links, I changed the code a little bit and come up with this extension method: public static MvcHtmlString MenuLink( this HtmlHelper helper, string content, string action, string controller) { var routeData = helpe...

@CaptainObvious define "current link"? how can't that be done with just plain ol' CSS?
oh wait...
hmm

It'd be really clear if "highlighting" was defined.

A: Numerology Calculator

Jonahmap and reduce are tailor made for problems like this. To understand the while loop in the final version of the code at the bottom of this post, it may help to consider a "longhand" version that does the same thing: // this sets the answer we seek to the sum of all the digits // of every number...

"About" is "current"
(from the link in OP)

that could easily be done without the need of razor, or c#, or whatever that is

I'm sure
but I don't do enough web dev to recommend anything
I just know that using C# to concatenate HTML tags like this, is plain wrong. especially in ASP.NET MVC
I've seen such crap in ASP.NET / WebForms too

Q: Perl parsing code

CharlesI've extracted a subroutine from some perl code I've written. (I also included the use enum line for easy reference.) Its purpose is to parse the given code, returning a string with an error message if the code is malformed. The purpose of the whole program is to check code for errors, so the 'no...

@m6nut, you may ask such questions at this site: codereview.stackexchange.comkelin 46 secs ago
@kelin as explained in the help center, codereview is for reviews of existing, working code. This question is definitely off-topic there. — Jacob Raihle 23 secs ago

Working as a dev for a client who still has their own devs in the code base is meh.

@kelin assuming there's actual working code to be reviewed, yes. In its current form, this question would be closed in nanoseconds on Code Review. — Mat's Mug 42 secs ago

why is that @nhgrif?

@nhgrif Getting a lot of clashes on how things should be done?

@EthanBierlein Don't scare away the new guys. For a first post this is pretty good.
Your title should only describe the purpose of your code, and your body should elaborate on that, and ask for improvements. — Ethan Bierlein 8 mins ago
