So, Simon wants someone to kill the user? o.O

@IsmaelMiguel it also means the truth, though: urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=see+the+light
strangely enough

> see the light
Fig. to understand something clearly at last. After a lot of studying and asking many questions, I finally saw the light. I know that geometry is difficult. Keep working at it. You'll see the light pretty soon.
@IsmaelMiguel ^^

thanks @Phrancis

@rolfl ha - ha
@IsmaelMiguel the light of profilers.

@SimonForsberg That's better. I don't know such light either.

Q: Splitting large text file and sorting by content

wnnmawI have a large text file (~2GB) full of data. The data (sample below) gives an x, y, z coordinate, and a corresponding result on each line (there is other stuff but I don't care about it). The single large text file is too large to be useful, so I want to split it into several smaller files. Ho...

perhaps I was mistaken
'Go into the light' is the appropriate idiom

I just realized that WHERE condition I posted a few minutes ago actually creates a FULL OUTER JOIN on a partial string match. No wonder it's slow.

@Quill not to be pedantic, but that's totally different ;-)

(and not very useful data)

@Mat'sMug perhaps perhaps wasn't a strong enough word

3:10 PM
lol

Out of 3778 "partial matches" I only have 6 distinct "likely matches". I think I'm just going to get rid of this check altogether, 6 records is not worth 2 hours of someone's time sifting through all this garbage

You could throw that and let it run
Depending on your PC, you can limit it's execution to 1 core

@IsmaelMiguel Who are you talking to?

lol
@IsmaelMiguel, that's not the problem
the problem is that it returns crap

@Phrancis To you
@Quill From what I understood, it takes too long for too little benefict.

3:16 PM
@IsmaelMiguel The query is not running on my PC, it's taxing a production server.

@Phrancis Oh...
Ignore what I said then
That's almost funny
I nearly laughed

it already got a lol from me, two lols is just overloling the situation
4

I wasn't going to "lol" that
I'm not in a mood to laugh

if you're happy and you know, clap your hands

I hate jQuery Javascript with a passion.

3:22 PM
@Mat'sMug I'm not happy. And I hate that song
@EBrown Try asmjs
And I mean it

Goes against the business requirements.

You're forced to use jQuery?

Yep.

what does the business care about jQuery? not to be pedantic, but that should be a technical requirement, not a business one.
2

I kinda like some stuffs in jQuery
The Ajax and even handling is pretty cool

3:24 PM
@Mat'sMug Well, it might be a technical requirement instead, but our designer will only use Bootstrap with jQuery.

But for DOM access, you're better off using pure Javascript

So, I'd rather chalk it up to a business requirement, as it makes me feel much better. ;)

@IsmaelMiguel Yeah, the company I work for use jQuery, for basically only that. I considered writing a skin up of jQuery's ajax-stuff and dom selectors for my colleague, but meh

Well I'm using a lot of jQuery for this XML and Ajax.
It's also an ASP.NET site, which is another restriction.

JQuery's not bad. Pretty decent when you want something done fast (In terms of code writing)

3:26 PM

ASP.Net forms or MVC?

@IsmaelMiguel Bingo that's exactly the issue!

@TopinFrassi ASP.NET WebForms.

@Quill I use jQuery at work. It's the fastest (in terms of development time) when comparing to plain Javascript.

@EBrown ouch

3:28 PM
@Phrancis May I have a cookie?

@Quill I like ASP.NET WebForms.

okay

I know nothing about those

isn't it becoming or became obsolete

@Quill Not at all.

3:29 PM
oh okay
@IsmaelMiguel I suppose, but when you're only using it for simplified dom selectors and ajax, I don't see a need for it.
Especially since the context of the website is geared toward delivering fast content

Well, I don't have a choice
Basically, I have to do speed programming
If I can save 5 minutes by using jQuery, I have to
But sometimes I have enough time to clean up stuff
And on those times, I write some things in a better way

Woah
Wtf

@EBrown It's god damn awful. But, that's my opinion and I won't debate it :p

What?

WHY ARE YOU BORKEN JAVASCRIPT?
2
This is messed up.

3:33 PM
It's in its nature.

I'd poind out that 99.9% of time we think a language is broken, we are broken

Use Chrome, inspect the line, add a breakpoint and you pretty much are set

bork bork: sounds like a farm animal with a few too many chromosomes extra

I was wondering why the Design Independent post irritated me, then I discovered:
Hmm.... I just realized that this post is not really a site-specific announcement at all..... it's part of a "batch" operation of "identical" posts to multiple site metas, each with the same message. Really, this post is not "tailored" to Code Review in any significant way: CS, Anime, Blender, and 5 more - all the same posts, the same posts — rolfl 3 mins ago
Look at the other site stats, though..... all the posts were given at about the same time, look at their score, and their answers .......

Yeah Grace mentioned that it was a template in a comment

Didn't we decide not to graduate?

This is, in most parts, a template announcement - "several months" is mostly a safety term and it may be less time. 9 sites were in the bundle of our "launch party" for design independent graduation. I quite remember the decision to turn down joining in the test with Magento last month. In this case, it's becoming official process and not giving you guys these things won't make the work on the design, or decoupling from it, any faster. I'll look into the potential for a chat event and who can partake in it. — Grace Note ♦ 3 hours ago
@IsmaelMiguel They asked about graduating early in a kind of mini beta. That's what was decided on.

A: What should our logo and site design look like?

Gábor AngyalFirst of all I really like kleinfreund's magnifying glass idea. However I think, that as programmers.SE has a logo that is not that serious, even a little funny, the coffee mug, the same could apply to codereview.SE. So what do you think about the famous code reviewing rubber duck? I am by no...

yea..

imo a minimalistic logo is always more 'professional' looking.

@rolfl people have other communities too, @rolfl, why so possessive? ;-P

Not possessive at all, was making sure Vogel saw, that's all ;-)

3:51 PM
However I don't see how kleinfreund's logo references to CodeReview; I notice the C and with some imagination the R, but it misses a line. It looks more like a Q atm. Or am I missing something?

The post only had 18 views in total when I first went there ..... was Vogel one of those? IDK.

@DJanssens joined, I suppose. it seems to be somewhat of a concept kinda thing, though, so I think feedback would've been taken onboard (at the time)

Didn't read the comments, stupid me. It's a magnifying glass, like looking into the code. Pretty neat.

I've always had a thing for that one^
(except maybe the teal color, that looks almost just like "beta-blue")

@Phrancis I don't like the shadow that much
It's too dark

3:54 PM
@Phrancis Visual Studio default colors for C# code.

It might look good on a dark background too with inverted/dark-scheme colors

+1 for the shadow

-1 for the shadow being too dark

+0 for nothing in particular

@Mat'sMug We gotta change it to IntelliJ's colors for Java code.

3:57 PM
@SimonForsberg moar JetBrains. Agreed! :)

lol if you google image 'code review logo', the top hit is the one of kleinfreund

I do think that code.review(); as a proof-of-concept fits really well, and looks like an almost-universal programming syntax

@Phrancis Should be code.Review();. ;)
But that would violate the casing standards on website names on SE.

goto code_review;
runs

@EBrown the color for code is that of a type, so should be Code.Review(); ;-)

4:00 PM
@Mat'sMug That works with me, but then we assume Review is static, which could imply that we review all things the exact same, regardless of what questions you pose.
(Which could be bad.)

@EBrown s/could/would/

@EBrown it also implies that there's a whole community that's going to say Y U MAEK IT STATIC CLASS U DUMMY

@Mat'sMug I think 'guru' is relative - i mean, I'm an Ubuntu Power User, and i do a lot of bug triage, and I maintain the nginx package in Ubuntu, but meh. (My only reason for hopping in was to get something related to a flag that crossed my chat notices window xD)

Q: Significant Figures Formatting.00

EBrownI wrote this for an SO question on formatting numbers to specific quantities of significant figures (after all, reinventing-the-wheel), anyway, all critiques welcome. @EBrown got the link to the SO post?

@Mat'sMug Yeah, why? Is it relevant?

4:18 PM
@EBrown could be, for full context

A: C++ std::setprecision in C#

Hopefully my use of on that question doesn't go unnoticed.

@Mat'sMug do you know the RGB/hexa for that teal color in the logo you made?

@Phrancis not off the top of my head

ok

Haven't had "overflow" before

@Zak congratulations, you busted VBA's stack!

Zak
Tbh, I'm amazed I haven't done that before now

When you ask how to do something more elegantly, your question should be on Code Review rather than Stack Overflow. — the Tin Man 58 secs ago

or is that a numeric overflow?

Zak
4:42 PM
not sure. It was in the middle of filtering 500,000 rows * 40 columns.

yeah, could be a numeric overflow

Zak
So could really be either

Debug.Print CInt(32768)
"Overflow"

I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because asking how to do something that works more elegantly is a code-review and belongs on Code Review rather than Stack Overflow which is for code problems. — the Tin Man 20 secs ago

@Quill ^^ !?!?

4:43 PM
okay, they're in the wrong order
swap white with pink

@Quill Very much so.

swap pink with black

OK
Much better ;)

@Zak probably one of the values you're reading into an Integer that's greater than 32767?

@Mat'sMug Excel Integer only goes up to 32768?

4:46 PM
VBA Integer is 16-bit signed

Wut

Zak
@Mat'sMug Possibly. Whatever it is, I just ripped the offending method out and re-wrote it
It really wasn't well put-together in the first place

@Phrancis sorry, can you try swapping green with white there for a second
that's what @nhgrif's blog seems to do

.Replace("IND", "") this seems like a bad idea.

4:49 PM
@EBrown back then, a hard drive was 40MB, and Windows installs came on 3.5" floppy disks

@Mat'sMug 40MB? That big?

Zak
@Mat'sMug I'm guessing the only reason we still have integer is for backwards compatibility?

@Quill ^

hmm
that looks better
I think

Zak
4:50 PM

@Mat'sMug Consolas (Bold)
To be faithful, XCode's should probably be Monaco :)

^^

There

4:54 PM
the pink is for the var and let style keywords, white for the name of the variable, and green once it's been define, with white as a property

Zak
I like green code

@Mat'sMug I installed Monaco on my work PC just so I could use in SSMS ;)

Zak
Especially since it's supposed to be working once it gets here

I got 2 interfaces, with the same properties. One has the job to provide the property content to the other. Though, as I said, they have the same properties, getter and setter etc. Should I keep one interface only?
ex :

Zak
@Quill 22 in a month

ah okay

I got FooPropertyForm.Bar {get;set;} and FooDomainObject.Bar {get;set;}
Though, I feel like they should be separated because they are not for the same thing, I'm unable to give good reasons to prove my point, and I need those

Slashdot have a deals website with some courses and stuff you can do online to learn more about various languages, concepts and whatnot. I have a friend who got the networking one, he said it was pretty good.

@TopinFrassi what are the interfaces named, and what do they expose?

5:28 PM
I have an interface called IAxis {string X{get;set;} and string Y{get;set;}}, which is used to set axis's names
The form which has the responsability to get user input has those two properties, and the domain object also has those properties. But, I feel that the form is more of a provider and the domain object the consumer
But both have the same interface code
(That's an example amongst other, I got 4 interfaces like this)

Zak
alright. I'm off for the night. have fun#

'night @Zak
@TopinFrassi not sure about the specifics of your project, but it seems to me that if two objects have identically named members, with different implementations, ...fits the bill for having the same interface

@Mat'sMug Yeah I guess that's right, now I just need to find a name that fits both cases

..or any other case

Yeah it is
In... Cegep (which are between high school and university, only exists in Quebec, CA), I used to name everything with pointless names. I "miss" easy slack-ish school projects sometimes. :p

@EBrown back then, a hard drive was 40MB, and Windows installs came on 3.5" floppy disks
Back then, i was in South Africa, and 3.5 inch disks were "new", and "old" was 5 1/4 floppies.
Being South Africa, and being that Hard disks were hard, and floppy disks were not, the 3.5 inch disks were called "stiffies".
It was only when I got to england and asked for a box of stiffies that I realized the problem......
11
