Q: Calculate distance using speed of sound

PhrancisBeen working on learning Java and this was a challenge as part of a chapter on data types. Create a program that computes how far away, in feet, a listener is from a sound. Sound travels approximately 1,100 feet per second through air. You can also compute the distance to a large ob...

@Phrancis Is this kitten gonna ask Java questions ? :P

It's too late and too drunk to talk Java

@CaptainObvious Thank you!

@Mat'sMug ping me when you're around, i've got a couple of questions about RubberDuck

1:23 AM
@mjolka I'm always nearby ;)

@Mat'sMug :O !

sup?

so when RB is refactoring code, what's the process? text in editor -> ast -> transform ast -> replace text in editor?

yeah
wait, no
the syntax tree is immutable AFAIK

so you create a new syntax tree?

1:28 AM
nope, I analyze it in-place
using tree walkers

i guess i'm more interested in how you replace the text in the editor -- all at once? or do you diff the old text and the new text and perform only a few deletes/inserts?

the VBE API really sucks for this - I can replace lines, delete lines, and insert lines. that's all.

@Mat'sMug that's not too bad is it? what more would you want?

It'd be nice to be able to replace parts of a line

@Mat'sMug ah, gotcha

1:30 AM
I wouldn't need to rewrite a whole signature to pass a parameter by value

@Mat'sMug so you do a diff then?

depends what you call a diff
        private void PassParameterByValue(VBE vbe)
        {
            var parameter = Context.Parent.GetText();
            var newContent = string.Concat(Tokens.ByVal, " ", parameter.Replace(Tokens.ByRef, string.Empty).Trim());
            var selection = QualifiedSelection.Selection;

            var module = vbe.FindCodeModules(QualifiedName.ProjectName, QualifiedName.ModuleName).First();
            var lines = module.get_Lines(selection.StartLine, selection.LineCount);

            var result = lines.Replace(parameter, newContent);
it seems a bit frail, I'd love to know a better way

@Mat'sMug as would i, as i would i :)

the only better way I can think of involves regenerating the signature from a modified parse tree

@Mat'sMug i think that's what i'm doing

1:35 AM
how?

so text in editor -> ast -> new ast -> text. run a line diff on original and new text, delete/insert text as specified by the diff

@Mat'sMug It shouldn't be hard to replace part of a line.

it's not. but there are cornercases and pitfalls

True.

it's just that deleting/inserting lines is ... not fun ... because the original EOLs are lost in the translation to/from asts

1:38 AM
well everytime an inspection quickfix is applied, the modified module gets reparsed and all inspections are rerun
it's pretty fast ;)

i really think i should have gone with antlr

@mjolka what do you do with VBA?

@Hosch250 nothing with VBA, i write a thing similar to RubberDuck for LoadRunner scripts

I thought ANTLR was only for VBA.

lol
ANTLR takes whatever grammar you give it, and generates a lexer + parser for it

1:42 AM
WOW

doesn't even have to be an existing language.. could be a custom expression editor in your app

How in the world does it do that?

Witch of the North + Witch of the South

it interprets a .g4 grammar file, which defines what the tokens are and how they are organized into what forms a language

1:44 AM
I see.

sharp
see sharp

mug plz

lol
I know right
(tired)

@Mat'sMug Can ANTLR take too?

So, did you create the parse file?
Or did you feed it an official file?

1:53 AM
@Phrancis why not?
@Hosch250 I grabbed an open-source Visual Basic 6.0 grammar

Stupid question I guess :)

and then tweaked it to accomodate VBA
and then C#'d it (ANTLR has a Java background, the generated members would be camelCase so I made all grammar rules PascalCase)

Now, to figure out how to make a constructor for my SoundSpeed.java class :D
(I have accidentally made constructors before, it will be interestingly to make one purposefully)

try a method named after the type..
like
class foo {
    public foo() {
    }
}
ugh those braces

2:13 AM
@Mat'sMug what's wrong with them?
They look like normal braces to me.

nothing, except I had to backspace to place them there

Because you are used to C# braces?

Ahh so you make the constructor inside its own class eh? I was tempted to make it before the main in the same file, but that's probably not ideal I'm assuming

a constructor belongs to the class it's constructing

So the constructor is part of the "blueprint" rather than the instantiation

2:21 AM
hmm not quite

The only time you can call the constructor is when you instantiate the class.
So, you don't call class.constructor ever.
You just do customType t = new customType;

Hey Phrancis ... I see you in JavaLand?

Indeed!

Class t {

I don't find the Trails particularly helpful on the topic of constructors

2:32 AM
Type .... main->

public class SoundSpeed {

	private final double SOUND_TRAVEL_SPEED = 1100;
	private double timeInSeconds;
	private boolean isEcho;
	private int distanceDivisor;
	/*
	private double getResult() {
		if(isEcho) {
			distanceDivisor = 2;
		} else {
			distanceDivisor = 1;
		}
		return (timeInSeconds * SOUND_TRAVEL_SPEED) / distanceDivisor;
	}
	*/
	public SoundSpeed (double timeInSeconds, boolean isEcho) {
		// stuck here
	}
}

Who needs the trail. Do you have some reading under your belt on OOP? (it's OK to say 'no').

Anyone have a hint what the heck I'm trying to do? lol
No, not much :)

OK, objects are an encapsulation of data, and the methods required to manipulate, and access the data.
That's big speak for saying that objects are a combination of both data, and methods.

Ok

2:35 AM
It is most convenient, for a number of academic reasons, for objects to represent one, or very closely related things.
That way, you can use the same object defintion, and swap out the data only, and the methods still do the same thing.

@Phrancis I don't think you'll ever be able to call getResults

You change the methods, and you have a different object. You change the data, and you have a different instance of the object.
So, what woul dbe the right object(s) in your problem....

I think you need to make it public for it to be accessible outside the class.

Q: YAuB - Yet another Micro Benchmark

rolflI recently answered this Beautiful String question, where the task is to maximize the value of a string by assigning each character a different value (from 1 to 26) in a way that the sum of all characters is maxmized. A number of different solutions were presented, but, the question is, which on...

Also, the constructor is usually used to assign variables and stuff so the class methods can be called and have the data they need available.
So, assign timeInSeconds in the constructor.

2:41 AM
	public SoundSpeed (double timeInSeconds, boolean isEcho) {
		this.timeInSeconds = timeInSeconds;
		this.isEcho = isEcho;
	}

But, I think you need to use a different name in the constructor signature.

Would something like that make sense?

If I was generous, I would identify the following objects in the problem:
1. the listener
2. the time
3. the source of sound (echo/remote)

Yes.

@rolfl Following you

2:43 AM
Also, if you don't need to manipulate the data, try doing something like this.

So, I would create Listener class, I would create an enumeration for the source, and an appropriate Numeric type for the time (Double?).

public SoundSpeed(...) : var(var1) { ... }

public enum SoundSource {
    ECHO(0.5), DIRECT(1.0);

    private final double distanceFactor;
    private SoundSource(double fact) {
        distanceFactor = fact;
    }
    public double getDistanceFactor() {
        return distanceFactor;
    }
}

Not sure if Java supports that notation.
C++ does, so...

now you have two instances of the SOundSource class (which is also an enum - a special thing).
each sound source: SOundSource.DIRECT and SoundSource.ECHO has a different factor you use to determine the final distance.
enums are a special kind of class, that have lovely uses, like this. You will need to learn them at some point.
Think of them as being like magic constant instances.
you declare the enum, as well as specific instances of the enum, all at once.

2:48 AM
Simon keeps talking about enums like they just went out of style :)

enums are relatively new in Java still .... like, only 8 years or so.
people are still getting used to them

:)

I lie, they are 11 years old, introduced with Java 5.
But, my descriptions still holds. Enums are just special classes. You declare the methods of the class, the data the class can contain, and specific, constant instances of the enum, all at once.
SO, in that code above, we have created the class SoundSource, and the two instances ECHO and DIRECT.
Each of the instances has a different value for the method getDistanceFactor().
does that make sense?

Trying to digest, but yes it appears to make sense, so far

Hooray!
100 downloads of my app in the WP store.
4

2:55 AM
So if I were to use the above enum how would I go about calling it in, say, main or whatever?

Well, actually, we are going to wait a bit.... conside this first....

The private SoundSource constructor (I'm guessing) seems to be expecting a fact parameter

a measure of time, in nano seconds......
import java.util.concurrent.TimeUnit;

public class TimeDelay {

    private final long nanoseconds;

    public TimeDelay(long duration, TimeUnit unit) {
        nanoseconds = unit.toNanos(duration);
    }

    public long getDelayTime(TimeUnit units) {
        return units.convert(nanoseconds, TimeUnit.NANOSECONDS);
    }

}
The above is a gutsy class...
all it does, is encapsulate 1 item of data, a duration, in nanoseconds.

ok

It allows you to construct the class with a duration, specified in one of a few units of measure.
TimeUnit is a Java standard enum (yes, an enum), and it has instances like NANOSECONDS, MILLISECONDS, HOURS, etc.
Let's look at the constructor.... it shows off a number o language features.
public TimeDelay(long duration, TimeUnit unit) {
    nanoseconds = unit.toNanos(duration);
}
The unit could be something like TimeUnit.SECONDS, and the duration could be something like 3.
the unit is an enum, and it has a method toNanos
so, we can convert 3 seconds to 3,000,000,000 nanoseconds

3:00 AM
Ok

In that constructor we populate the encapsulated data nanoseconds by converting some arbitrary time/unit to nanoseconds.
Then the getter method does the opposite... it converts the nanoseconds to some arbitrary other unit....
public long getDelayTime(TimeUnit units) {
    return units.convert(nanoseconds, TimeUnit.NANOSECONDS);
}
So, we have two classes, 2 instances of the first class SoundSource, and many possible instances of a TimeDelay.
We can create any arbitrary delay with:
TimeDelay delay = new TimeDelay(3, TimeUnit.SECONDS);
make the 3 and units whatever you want.

Makes sense

That is a versatile class, and it shows the basic principles of a class.
thre is data, it is encapsulated (you cannot access it directly), and many instances of the class can have different data encapsulated.
So, you have a TimeDelay, and a SoundSource.
Now what you need is a Listener.... who hears something....

So a class like TimeDelay could easily be used in any number of different contexts/calculations and predictably work the same every time, regardless of the data?

Yup

3:06 AM
You could use that time delay class for any calculation you want, including space travel, and microsurgery.
TimeUnit.LIGHTYEARS
etc.

Yup

(that one does not exist.... just kidding).
We all know that LIGHTYEARS is a measure of distance, not time ;-)
It would be really good to have a Distance class that was able to take distances in one unit, and return them in another....
In the same way that the TimeDelay takes inputs with a TimeUnit, we should have a Distance that takes input in one unit (say meters), and returns it in another (say feet).

If I wrote that class, there would be conversion methods.

You could have an enum like TimeUnit, instead it would be DistanceUnit ... and have METERS, FEET, INCHES, YARDS, LIGHTYEARS, ASTRONOMICALUNITS, etc.
and you could say:
 Distance d = new Distance(3.6, DistanceUnit.METERS)
double feet = d.getDistance(DistanceUnit.FEET);
But, that is more of an undertaking than you want to do right now ;-)
So, instead, do a hack ;-)
2

I'm actually surprised a DistanceUnit doesn't exist. But then you'd also have to make WeightUnit, QuantityUnit, etc.

3:13 AM
I wonder what gymnastic cyborg would look like?
Especially one who infiltrated the Olympics.
(I bet you are thinking I'm a lunatic)

The thought briefly entered my mind :)

import java.util.concurrent.TimeUnit;

public class Listener {

    private final String name;

    private static final double FEETPERMILLI = 1100 / 1000.0;

    public Listener(String name) {
        this.name = name;
    }

    public double calculateDistanceInFeet(TimeDelay soundTime, SoundSource source) {
        long millis = soundTime.getDelayTime(TimeUnit.MILLISECONDS);
        double feet = FEETPERMILLI * millis;
        feet = feet * source.getDistanceFactor();
        return feet;
    }

Actually, just listening to my brother's watch Bolt by Disney.

now we have a lsitener, but this is a crappy object.
really, the method could be a static method, or the main method, it's arbitrary.
there is no reference to any of the encapsulated data in the calculateDistanceInFeet method at all
It is not a good example.....

What's the purpose of name in all that?

3:20 AM
    Listener listener = new Listener("Phrancis");

    long[] times = {100, 500, 200, 1345, 321};

    for (int i = 0; i < times.length; i++) {
        SoundSource source = (i % 2 == 1) ? SoundSource.ECHO : SoundSource.DIRECT;
        TimeDelay delay = new TimeDelay(times[i], TimeUnit.MILLISECONDS);
        double feet = listener.calculateDistanceInFeet(delay, source);
        System.out.printf("Listener %s is %.3f feet (%d milliseconds %s)\n", listener.getName(), feet, times[i], source);
    }
There's some crappy test code... ;-)
2
Take a listener (you), and some arbitrary times-in-flight.
even-indexed times are DIRECT, even-indexed times are ECHO.
It produces the output:
Listener Phrancis is 110.000 feet (100 milliseconds DIRECT)
Listener Phrancis is 275.000 feet (500 milliseconds ECHO)
Listener Phrancis is 220.000 feet (200 milliseconds DIRECT)
Listener Phrancis is 739.750 feet (1345 milliseconds ECHO)
Listener Phrancis is 353.100 feet (321 milliseconds DIRECT)

@rolfl It does look a bit crappy lol. But I think I'm getting the gist of it. Kinda.

I made the code a bit nneater (took the delay out....).
Gotta run.

Ok thanks for the taking advantage of teachable moments :)

See you.

I've been running Windows 10 in a VM, as some of you know.
I REALLY am hating it.
Why do they have to puke the desktop all over everything (to paraphrase Modern haters)?
I can't use Windows-I to access app settings - it just opens the Settings app.
I can't use touchpad swipes to switch between the desktop and my open modern apps.
I can't choose whether to leave an update uninstalled.
^ is a really dumb move because at least one update I've received through Windows Update wasn't published by them, but my some hacker.
I can't uninstall problematic updates, which is very important.
In the Store, I can't browse apps by a certain publisher (how can I find other apps by a great developer, or even find other MS apps?).
I've been leaving feedback like crazy, but I doubt they will listen because most the other people are desktop-only advocates, so my proposals won't get much attention and upvotes, so they will be at the bottom of the list.
ALT-f4 won't close modern apps, just desktop apps.

Just sent a polite rating on the build to them, lowest rating possible (very low).
I told them if they didn't fix these and either revert the icons to 8.1's or update them to be as nice as Office 2013's, I will only run it on a VM or dual-boot and keep 8.1 for my real work.
They should look at that given the rating level.
Sorry for the off-topic rant, but fighting viruses and being tired and general frustration have irritated me.

@Hosch250 can you post an example of an ugly icon?

Sure, lots.
Now, compare those to this:

People have been begging for icon updates...
Now, MS can design good icons still. Look at some Office 2013 screenshots.

You know... I'd love to see a genuine floppy disk drive on something like a modern tablet PC.

@Phrancis I don't think they make floppy drives any more.
But, if you change the drive letter you install on, it can really thwart most viruses, I've read.

4:49 AM
You can probably get them still, but getting the media would be a challenge

Because they depend on the system being installed on C:

Granted, the icons are smaller.
But still, they look a bit better.
Or maybe, they look better given the layout/UI/other elements.
Whatever it is, they seem to fit there good.
@rolfl Cool.
Apparently, they even work with Windows 8.

I lookd a moment for an actual drive, but it appears I am wrong, you can get the media easier than you can get the drive.
I remember the cool smell of new 5.25 floppies.

What is the difference between the media and the drive?

4:57 AM
The way the desk would shudder when the heads changed loation
^^^ drive
media:
Hmmm, that;s not a 5.25. disk.

I don't know what size media we have/had for our Brother typewriter.

The orange one is a 5.25

But, we had something similar.
Ours looked almost identical to the blue one.

The orange one is about th size of a CD jewel case

Ours were smaller.
Ours had the paper and the black thing and everything.

5:00 AM
the blue one is a 3.25 "floppy" which people in the rest of the world, call 'stiffies' ... (just South Africa)

Not sure if we still have them.
And, they were stiff.

The black one is a 8-inch... I think.

Were the other ones actually flexible?

@rolfl 8 inches... I've had vinyl records about that size, I reckon.

5:02 AM
Yes, the other ones were as flexible as cardboard, and the actual disk, if you cut it open, was about as floppy as..... paper.

I've never seen a real record/record player.
One of my great uncles has/had a bunch.

The outer cover was about as floppy as the plastic on strawberry boxes, or margarine tubs

OK.
I'm feeling young and inexperienced.
Wouldn't the drive get wrecked if you bent it?

The 3.5 inch 'floppy' had a fairly rigid case, you coul d bend it with force, but the actual disk inside was about as bendy as paper.

Ours had a plastic case, I think.
I never tried to bend it, but it was quite stiff.

5:04 AM
In South Africa, we called them "Stiffies". They do not call them that in the rest of the world, and you get odd looks if you use that name.

"I got a 3.5 inch stiffy" would certainly get you odd looks, indeed

So, would the drive get wrecked if you bent it?
Or, only if you creased/broke it?

The disk would, if you folded it with a crease.
but, they took a fair amount of abuse.
They were designed to run in contact with the head..... so they were 'hardy'.
Hard drives have the head 'floating' over the surface, never quite touching.

I see, cool.
Is that because the drive spins so fast?
Do they make contact on wind up/wind down?

No, they don't make contact, until they break.

5:08 AM
Because I've read that the drive only wears out at wind up/wind down, and there is no wear when running at full speed.

A head crash is a hard-disk failure that occurs when a read–write head of a hard disk drive comes in contact with its rotating platter, resulting in permanent and usually irreparable damage to the magnetic media on the platter surface. It is most commonly caused by a sudden severe motion of the disk, for example the jolt caused by dropping a laptop to the ground while it is operating. == Head details == A head normally rides on a thin film of moving air entrapped at the surface of its platter (some drives of the mid-1990s used a thin liquid layer instead). The topmost layer of the platter is made...

My drive has an automatic brake built in, in case I drop it.
Or something.

When the drive is not active, the heads are normally positioned in a place which prevents the heads mechanicially from crashing.
The heads are moved to the side of the platter where physical devices lock them in place.

Clever.

When the disk senses zero-G (being dropped), it moves and locks the heads in place.

5:10 AM
How fast does it move?
Like a centipede?
Or like a snail?

The average seek-time for drives is about 10ms ..... which is the combined time for the disk heads to move over the right cylinder, and for the data on the track to move under the head.

This looks somewhat off-topic to me, want to check it?

BlackI just completed a Codility test. The question presented was pretty simple but I may have over thought it. Question: Find the element which has the highest absolute deviation from the mean. E.g. You should probably go to Code Review for that kind of question. — Olivier Grégoire 51 secs ago
CodeReview is for working, existing, self-maintained code. Which is what this question seems to be about, so that's good! This question would work, provided it merged the question and answer as a question on CodeReview. I don't think that'd be easy to do for a mod, so probably the OP would have to post it themselves... — Pimgd 1 min ago
@OlivierGrégoire We on Code Review need the code to be reviewed to be present in the question. In its current state this question would be off topic. Please see our help centerHeslacher 1 min ago

Q: Thread lock algorithm

stackunderflowI am trying to make a thread lock for a method so that only one thread can run it at a time. Although this is a well known issue and in C# there is the lock keyword to do it.
