Q: Public methods vs. logic in setters

CharlesI'm trying to decide if I should put time into refactoring this tiny class. PathParser only uses string locally and every other method is used by an outside class. Should I put the small bits of logic into initialize or keep this as is. class PathParser attr_reader :str def initialize(...

@Hosch250 Did you work in java?

@overexchange a little.

Can you help me understand these comments?

I took the basic course from the U.
I'll try.

@overexchange If you're familiar with Java or C#, a class (with all fields private) is an ADT and an interface is an object. — Doval 10 hours ago
I did not understand when he says, interface is an object

I've heard of interfaces, and I know classes. Never heard of ADT.
Hold on.

2:53 AM
I think one has to have clear idea about ADT && object before going for OOP

ADT is abstract data type.
So, yes, a class with all fields private is an ADT.

@Hosch250 why a class with any field public is not an ADT?

An interface is similar to a class, but only contains signatures.
When a class has all fields private, only those methods in the class can call them.
So, if I am remembering right, you need to abstract a specific class from the base class.
Otherwise, the class can never be used.

When you say field, is it just data members or does it include methods as well?

Data members and methods.
I think.
I may be remembering wrong, I'm kind of hazy from my flu.

2:59 AM
ok

I need to look into interfaces more.
I understand what they are now, but I've never implemented one by myself.
So, does that help a little?
Maybe you can figure the rest out now.

Welcome to SO! Don't be dismayed by @infused's comment. He's doing you a favour. The purpose of Code Review is to help posters--frequently newbies--improve their code. Here you tend to get fairly short, often clever, answers (which most definitely has its place), whereas the purpose of Code Review is to show posters what's good and bad about their code, and ways it could be improved. I suggest you voluntarily remove your question here and post it at Code Review, but do come back, as there's a lot to learn here. — Cary Swoveland 58 secs ago

If you want to be a programmer, you really need to test things yourself often though.

I do assert that things work. I sort of mean the difference in memory usage of a program or running time which I'm told I judge in meaningless ways...
Your advice is well received and taken to heart however.

I can highly recommend writing JUnit tests

I tend to think that I'd rather focus on thinking about the problem and learning by solving it rather than spending too much time just testing what could be trivial implementations, or doing bad tests. A lot of the time I get that "don't even know what I don't know" feeling.

"I don't know what I'm doing" isn't solved by "I'll just not do it" but rather by "Let's take a deeper look and learn it once and for all"

> Besides programming, I frequently travel to international European meetings about peace, trust, and solidarity.
That can be interpreted in too many ways, and most of them will be negative

Yeah, that effectiveky describes hooligans burning cars at G20 summits.

Would it be better if I wrote that I am interested in religious dialogue instead?
I do want to write something about what I do besides programming.

no... thinking here... hive me a second.
Travelling is often interpreted well, it's good to be out of your comfort zone....

G20 summits is more about politics than about peace, trust and solidarity.

4:13 PM
What is solidarity anyway?

Togetherness.

I've heard too many conflicting definitions.

@rolfl "Travelling to big European cities and staying with actual local families, getting to know the real culture, and not staying at a hotel and getting drunk on the beach everyday"... ?
3

Togetherness on what?

@Hosch250 oh, that could require a whole Q&A in itself.

4:15 PM
> Besides programming, I have often travelled throughout Europe, and attended multiple conferences mostly related to social awareness.

On issues, or in general. Limiting individual thought on actions and relegating it towards the "Best for all" or "All as one" mentality.

Count me out then.
I will never support crowd mentality.

Eh, it's generally a good thing. School spirit is just solidarity with the school, and you feel it naturally towards family. It's not about crowd mentality, just that people are natural selfish and showing them that helping others is equally if not more rewarding.

Mmm.

@rolfl hmm... could work... although that sounds a bit like staying at hotel rooms - which it is not.

4:19 PM
All I am trying to say is that people with a strong moral compass are good, but only if that compass aligns with the person reading the resume.

If it's of any relevance, I think it works. If you travelled you stayed at a hotel room, that's a given, but the purpose is the meeting.

At least that is as it pertains to a resume.
once you know the person as an indifividual, it's different.
I would not put the fact that I am a White South African on my resume because that can be interpreted too many ways.

wut

Not that it is not true, but it is something I would prefer to give more context to when it is revealed.
@Legato - I am a lot of things.

I don't see what's to be interpreted in white south African, seems pretty self-descriptive...but don't let me interject.

4:22 PM
Alright, "conferences mostly related to social awareness" it is.
I like the "mostly" :)

@Legato I am 42, white south african having grown up on the 'oppressive' side of apartheid and so on....

I look up to you even more now monking.

It has influenced my life a lot, and in ways that are too hard to express in a resume.

I see your meaning now.

When I was a kid I did not know how many blacks there were in the country, mostly because it was illegal for them to be on the same beaches, schools, toilets, and shops as me.

I simply never saw them much.

@Legato I think "mostly" is better.

I don't vote a lot, but that one got my delete vote

not the kind of person I'd want on the site

@Phrancis Part of that is also because register usage is commonly done in assembly, and you cannot rename registers. You will have to document how they're being used.

@Jamal That certainly is a very unusual question.

How hard can it be to show the default layout of your damn blogging engine
Anyone experience with jekyllrb.com?

@Phrancis It reminds me of one question on SO in which someone photocopied a page from their textbook and asked for code.

8:52 PM
I assume it was killed promptly?

lol

Yep

Some people would have answered it.

Sadly, yes. Just like people keep answering recommendation questions.

I once told someone that SO wasn't a code writing service.
Another user with a couple k of rep responded -1 and wrote an answer.

I'm pretty sure I would be up to par with Jon Skeet already if I wouldn't downvote all the answers on crap questions.

If I were to do that, I would've gotten down to 125 a long time ago.

Glad I'm not the only one who does that @JeroenVannevel

Sometimes I feel that downvotes should at least be free on WoC (Wall of Code) answers.

Q: Form for choosing settings

user3204810I've created a form to choose the settings: These settings are automatically saved in a file from the game client in this form: ["Setting"] = { ["track"] = "Spell Reflect", ["duration"] = { ["minimum"] = { ["enabled"] = 1, ["value"] = 3, }, ...

9:07 PM
Nice.

@JeroenVannevel Hello World!

Don't bookmark it yet though, I'll use a custom domain if I ever get this blog engine working

You aren't the first to name your blog Bits of Bytes.

Really?

Also, why not use Blogger?
Or WordPress?
Nope, I followed someone on WordPress with that name.

9:10 PM
Ugh, thieves stole my name

They did it first.
And they aren't time traveler either.

I'll send them a cease and desist when I have a global conglomerate

I'll be their lawyer.
You'll have to pay them a big royalty for the name if you want it.

Morning all in this beautiful Sunday morning morning :D

Morning.

9:19 PM
You must mean Saturday evening ;)
@Mehrad Australia, right?

I suppose it is going on fall in Australia?
We are going on spring here.

SE chat-related question; I'm logged in from a friend's PC (under his SE account) and the "upload" button is not showing. Is this an SE thing or seem more like a local bug?

Q: From domain to design

DzenanI am trying to create domain model classes representing search criteria, that could be saved into the database. Application would build sql query based on that search criteria. Only "AND" functionality would be supported. Following is search criteria with 3 filters added. Basic flow: User choos...

This is @Phrancis from a different PC

@Jay1148 Hi @PhrancisfromadifferentPC

Could be a rep thing.

That may be the case
Is there a @mod around?

9:34 PM
That's all that came to mind.
@rolfl @200_success @Jamal y u do dis?

What computer is it?
Is it possible there is something blocking it?
Like an ad-block?

ad-block has no effect on file upload
it is likely a reputation issue

Ok

confirmed
What other new privileges in chat do I get?

At 100 reputation you also get access to the "Upload image" button in chat.
I googled for "stackexchange chat upload image reputation"

So, he has less than .1k rep.
@Phrancis

@Legato do wut?

It's been solved! Haha. Unfortunately too late for me to delete that, thanks!

Thanks guys

cmd.Parameters.Add("@FirstName", SqlDbType.NVarChar, 256).Value = newAccount.FirstName. There you go, no more sneaky duplicates and a lot less typing. Also, don't use catch just to throw. Also, use using for disposable resources... would you like to try codereview.stackexchange.com ? :-) — Jeroen Mostert 1 min ago

Q: Convert Int To Date in Java

JasonDue to some clueless soul, we have several fields in a legacy database that uses a 6-digit integer to represent a date in (YYYYmm) format. The date field is assumed to be the last day of the given month. I have written the following method to perform the conversion from int to java.util.Date: p...

You have to be careful there, too. That could be misconstrued as a "give me the codez" question, and that's equally off-topic. In the case you need help with design, you should ask on Programmers Stack Exchange. If you have code and want to know if its correct, then you should ask on Code Review Stack Exchange. — jww 1 min ago
@jww "I cannot figure out how do the same in PHP" is an indication that this does not belong at Code Review. Additionally, OP says in a comment "There is no a single row of code yet". Additionally, this question does not belong on Programmers either. — Simon André Forsberg 54 secs ago
@jww If you have code and want to know if it is correct, you should test it. If you have code that you, to the best of your ability, know is correct and want to improve, then you should post at Code Review. — Simon André Forsberg 2 mins ago

Q: How do I close resources (files, etc.) correctly?

DenisI have the following Main class. public class Main { public static void main(String[] args) { try { MessageWriter writer = null; if (args.length < 1) { throw new IllegalArgumentException("There is no input file path"); } else if (...

Voted.
Should probably be renamed though.

try (FileReader file = new FileReader(messageFilePath);
     BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader(file)) {

Q: Cache for JSON API

ns47731I am working on a small project which utilizes a 3rd party API. Many of the queries from the API can take 5-10 seconds so to keep the front end moving a bit faster I decided to cache the responses from these calls. I ended up building my own cache implementation. There are 3 classes in this imple...

Q: Optimizing Method that compares multiple arguments and returns the smallest argument

Q: optimizing the runtime of the bisection method

jaskaFor those who aren't familiar with the bisection method for finding the root of a function (i.e. finding where \$f(x) = 0\$) the basic idea is: take a function \$f(x)\$ and an interval \$[a,b]\$ if \$sign[f(a)]\cdot sign[f(b)] < 0\$, there is a root in the interval, as one of those is a negativ...

A: Caching data on disk in iOS

nhgrifThis doesn't help with your primary concern of disk space, but you've got a high amount of unnecessary duplication in your code, as well as what appears to be some unnecessary checking and duplication. @BillWoodger thanks a bunch. I might forgo making the first argument omittable. It was an experiment and not really useful. Originally, I misunderstood how OMITTED worked and thought it would use the default values indicated in the subroutine link storage. I think I'll crank along and get 2.0 working. I've built it, but it's giving me some grief about libcob.so.4 at the moment. I'll figure that out. I know it's not a code review site, but if I'm doing anything else ridiculous, I appreciate the feedback. — lurker 30 secs ago
