A: Basic Block Building Game Part 2

Alexis KingYour code style is good, but first and foremost, I want to talk about the two major logical problems with your code: randomness and camera control. Randomness You've mentioned that you have a desire to make the world infinite at some point. Well, if you want to do that, you're going to need t...

3 page long answer for his question. Hope he deserves it
I learned something from my own answer though :D

Even if the OP doesn't deserve it, the dozen other people who read a good answer later probably do.
That's why this is different from an IRC "HowAreMyCodez" channel

VB people (@Mat'sMug, @RubberDuck) is there an online of offline tool to translate code form VS to C# which can handle async and await syntax?
@Edward totally agreed. I am in the similar idea but was just thinking out loud :D

I tend to write long-ish reviews, too, so I make a habit of not wondering if the OP deserves it!
:)

hahaha. somehow this was a little bit different. @Edward. First off it was a SO question and also his question was a 3 liner. But I am happy and that's all it matters as a result of a job done. :D (I hope)

I understand what you mean. Like you, I sometimes learn stuff myself when creating an answer. So I figure that at least somebody got something out of it. :D

12:16 AM
exactly

I think yours is just the right attitude.
I saw somebody else on a sister site delete an answer that was actually pretty decent, just because he (she?) didn't get what she (he?) thought were sufficient upvotes. :(
I resisted the urge to ask if he/she was saving up "points" to buy a house or something.
3

hahahaha... I know

@Edward this is gold :D

Everyone knows you can only buy stuff with stars!

Just two more and I'm getting a Ferrari.

I've been saving up for a Porsche.

12:22 AM
You're down to one

@Marc-Andre One rarely sees Care Bears driving Porsches on the Autobahn.

Helped you out with stars mate. Give me and @Marc-Andre a ride with the Ferrari. Although most of them only have 2 seats.

I'll just lend you the keys. Be careful with it!

hahaha... that works like a diode. it only goes one way.

Nuts. That's the second sports car I've lost this month. :(

12:26 AM
You're into cars also. aren't you

Definitely, yes, I'm into cars.

I have added this page in Instagram which posts pictures of super cars. and from since I don't check my instagram with an empty stomach.

No idea @Mehrad. Sorry. =(

Somebody just sent me a car-related link you won't want to see on an empty stomach.
Wrecked Lambo for sale -- cheap!

@RubberDuck all good. removed all the asyns and awaits and did it in converter.telerik.com. I'll put the back on :D
I should learn VS syntax sometime
or I don't know. SHould I ? @RubberDuck
@Edward I am SHOCKED. I watched the video and it was :/
don't think they have survived.
the chassis was melted. I don't think airbags can do anything for you.

12:38 AM
The chassis melted after the crash...

Must have exploded or something. Or even say being dragged on the tarmac with that speed on the roof would result on the same thing
anyways... @Edward I am gonna take one of your stars off of you for that

Q: Macala Game made with Meteor

vrundbakenThis is my first project I've written totally from scratch. It hasn't been styled yet so it's pretty ugly and it's missing some features but the core functionality works. Q: Is this dynamic programming (rod cutting) solution valid, and can it be improved?

jesse34212I've written what I believe is a valid dynamic programming solution to a variation of the rod cutting problem. In this problem, the goal is to make as few cuts as possible on a rod of length n. I have two questions... 1.) Is this a valid dynamic programming solution? 2.) How can it be improved? ...

@Phrancis I wish it was a way to trim the really long lines in the prettify code editor you're working on
or even to drag it wider then you won't need to scroll left and right constantly.
Scroll up and down is straight forward but right and left always need an special attention and using a mouse (which I prefer not to use until I have to) :D
it certainly would be a new and different feature of what was had over SE so far
@Hosch250 isn't it interesting how @Phrancis isn't around today. :)

1:11 AM
I'm right here buddy

I don't know.
I need to go now.

Ho Ho HO... :D

Be back later.

Ciao

kk.. take care

1:11 AM
@Mehrad Yes, I totally agree the horizontal scrolling is a PITA
However, I don't think that within the scope of Prettify, that could be changed. It would be more of a web layout thing on SE's end, methinks

but now that I am thinking about it, not sure. It matters where to break the line and how to break it. It's not as easy as cutting the line after a certain length and add to the next line with a added <kbd>tab</kbd>

That too, text wrap I don't think would be preferable to horizontal scrolling

@Phrancis, Okay. I honestly wasn't sure. and don't know it can be even done with CSS.
Just brain storming. thanks :D

With CSS you can choose the size of a box, line spreading, padding and things like that

@Phrancis - most people have screens wider than the width of the usable area in stack exchange...

1:15 AM
although you Mac users have the amazing giant track pad that can do everything with all the finger combinations :D

But even the vertical scrolling, that's all done on SE's end, I really don't think the Prettify package has any of that built in

if you can find a way to widen the area used for code......

and most of the people always matters :D

@rolfl SE might be able to give a us up a bit more margin on the left, since it's all white space anyways. On the right... doubt it :D

@rolfl or something like a full screen of even hover screen would be amazing. to click on the code and study it in full screen hovering with and X button

1:19 AM
I feel sure a user script could be written for full screen... Then again, you can copy the code in your favorite text editor and write your question/answer there, then just paste it in SE. That's what I usually do

There is lots of space the follwoing is 1600x900 screen:
The question is whether it can be used.

Well, it obviously can be used. It's more of a question of if they'd let us :)
The way it's layered right now looks like it finds the center of the browser screen, then spans a fixed distance on either side. It's possible (fairly easy, actually) to change it to where it instead finds the left side of the window, leave some arbitrary or relative margin, then extend to the right as far as it's allowed to
Need to reboot, brb

Well, again, the size they have it is about right.
Any wider, it is hard to find the beginning of the next line.
Any smaller, it is too small.

one more answer for me today

A: Reading, writing, and copying files

Alexis KingWarnings Pay attention to compiler warnings! Just because they're called "warnings" doesn't mean you can ignore them. They're errors. Fix them. I'm not sure I can keep writing small essays as reviews, though. It's sort of hard not to with code like that, unfortunately.

Yeah.
@Mehrad That is interesting.

@rolfl what do you think?
@Hosch250 isn't it. I would like it to be like this

Not a bad idea, but how do you expand it?

1:29 AM
@Mehrad - I'll need to see it in action...
@AlexisKing Pro Tip: don't.

Q: Python object modelling with ABCs

decezeI'm modelling the core entities in a callcenter-related system that deals with Operators and groups ("pools") of them. While I've written some Python before, this is my first time building a larger project in it from scratch, and I'd like to know if my approach and code is pythonic enough or will...

I started off writing essays, and did it for a while.
It takes a lot of time.

Since there is no editing and only viewing, i'd say it shouldn't be horribly hard to do so.

I now try to focus on just the part that interests me most.

@rolfl I'll probably switch to that after I get tired of it, yeah.

1:31 AM
There is no reason to do a comprehensive review if you don't feel like it.

I just feel like for the highly-voted posts in my tags, I might as well review them well.

I can understand that, but you should also consider the alternatives..... like:
1. you get more rep with smaller answers... ;-)

haha

2. more people get to answer, and more people get more rep.
3. the question gets more votes.
4. the question goes hot... and everyone wins.

s/hets/gets/

1:33 AM
Sure. I noticed in the time it took me to answer than one question, there were three more questions in my tags.
So it wasn't exactly efficient.

No, it's not that....
Consider this question here....:

Efficient, no.
Effective, yes.
Effective is more important than efficient, but both together are best.

Q: Usage of StringBuilder for returning copies of a string

Vishwanath Dalvi Given a string and a non-negative int n, we'll say that the front of the string is the first 3 chars, or whatever is there if the string is less than length 3. Return n copies of the front: frontTimes("Chocolate", 2) → "ChoCho" frontTimes("Chocolate", 3) → "ChoChoCho" frontTimes("Abc", 3) → "...

That question is successful because it has more smaller answers.

Yep, I've seen that question. Upvoted your answer on it. ;p
But yes, I see what you're saying.

Each answer addresses a little bit of it... I can dig up other examples....

1:36 AM
It isn't long.
Apparently, though, no one else found anything worth commenting on.

Though that one only has two other answers, but with negative score, haha.

I know, but it is a reasonable length.

yep

Anyway, I gotta run.

See you.

1:39 AM
The point is that you just have to add some significant value with an answer.

cya

you don't have to do a comprehensive analysis

Q: Improving isPrime method

LegatoI've been doing some programming challenges and problems lately and it seems like many involve primes. I concluded that I would benefit from optimizing how I'm checking for them. Currently I'm using the following method: private static boolean isPrime(int num) { if (num < 1) { throw ...

Here, many examples of small answers on a small question, lots of winners.

@Mehrad @rolfl This ^^ is sort of how it lines up if you justified the web page using the left margin instead of center

Indeed!

1:45 AM
I knew it right away from my mom's.
She doesn't use space ones, though.
Which version of OSX are you on?
Yosemite?

I see the red iTunes button.

Indeed

2:02 AM
@Phrancis what do you think? I honestly think the right and left pans should always be reserved. I mean it's okay if they are overlaped with the second pane temporarily but removing them would make reading text really hard because of really long non code lines.

Q: Checking Consecutive characters on a string

@Mehrad That's a fair point, and I honestly don't dislike the horizontal scroll that often, though I don't think it would hurt to have a little bit more room on the left, like an inch or so
Every now and then a horizontal scroll may really annoy me ;D

That's right. If it's one long line it's easy. but when it's multiple you have to keep going right and left. But not of a big deal atm
When in the edit mode you can expand the areas to the size you with but unfortunately not when you are reading questions.

2:27 AM
Ah, debugging HTML/CSS is so much fun

I like it.

I was missing one tiny little # in front of a hex color value and it was screwing up the whole pattern

It is easier than somethings I've done.
Ah, I did that in college at least once.

that's the second time I am hearing # is messing things up today @Phrancis

BTW, I'm going silly.
I just posted a nice big question, and got a single comment that pointed me in what I think is a good direction.
Now, I implemented that, and I'm about to post my third question on this topic.

Hi, @Mat'sMug!
I just thought of a question to ask you.

hi!

Would it be considered consistent if I used var on all but the basic types, like int, char, and string?

2:31 AM
Nope

OK, either all or none?

@Hosch250 ^^ got it working on my machine now

Onyx?

Obsidian

Or Obsidian?
OK, nice.

2:33 AM
are we naming something?

Nope, someone else did.

Official guidelines recommend using var when the declared type is trivial /redundant. e.g. you'll want to use var for var x = "value;", but maybe not for var x = GetValue();

OK.
Why bother - I'm used to C++.
I might switch sometime.

As a general rule, should I try to avoid static?
@Mat'sMug?
Do you not use static when you want each class instance to have its' own method?
And use static when the classes should share an instance of that method?

Yes, as a rule of thumb static makes things difficult, but it has its uses.

2:58 AM
Static members belong to the type; non-static members belong to the object - so OOP usually avoids static

Just curious again.

Chrome worked great though

I tried allowing ActiveX, but it acted like there was an infinite loop somewhere.

I think there's an issue with the way this is implemented, Prettify is... a bit wonky
FF giving the same problem?

They probably made it so it only works in Chrome on purpose.
Yep, but I think it might be because of something I blocked.
I don't know, I have my settings pretty tight, but I'm not sure what to enable.

Well, no not necessarily. It works fine on CR/SO etc. but they have it tweaked and integrated into their stack

OK, I just saw his avatar come sliding in.
How are you doing?

sort of ok

Oh, that's too bad.

57 errors in 12 files to fix until I can compile my project

Oh.
That is why I compile every time I finish something.

when I'm done, Rubberduck code inspections will be Powered By ANTLR ™ :)

Nice.
The funnest bugs are when you get >/< mixed up, and that sort of thing.
Takes hours to find, sometimes.
I've got everything working but the code blocks.

'night!

@Mat'sMug have time for a quick question?

sure

thanks
I have this handler for my progress report in the Async/await
    private void ReportProgress(int value){}
I want to bind this to my ProgressBar in the UI which has a Value property
          <ProgressBar
            Width="100" Value="{Binding Path=ProgressedAmount}">
          </ProgressBar>
What is the neatest way to do it?
did I make sense?
basically I am asking how to bind a Handler rather than a variable with a value
@Mat'sMug either you left or writing something up for me :)

hey sorry hold on
