Q: Why does Windows think that my wireless keyboard is a toaster?

ydaetskcoRI've inherited an old PC from my girlfriend's dad and when setting up the printer I got a bit of a surprise: Two questions spring to mind here: Why does Windows think my wireless keyboard is a toaster? Why does Windows even have an icon for a toaster in the devices menu?

This is awesome.

@chillworld later

@Vogel612 oops my answer is "use a list"

1:29 PM
@Pimgd your answer is: use Collection.contains
whether that collection is a list or a Set is irrelevant for your answer.
you also say "you could use Arrays.asList" to fill your collection.
and additionally you edited....

Yeah I editted to mention HashSet because it might be faster
but you have to do this weird thing
= new HashSet(Arrays.asList({"blah","blaaaah"}));

Also where I commented, he just say "use list", when there is no actual benefit in doing so, especially when op used a Set before.

Good logic

This bug has hurt my dignity.
When serializing objects that contain lists where order does not matter and may change during different invocations... Always, Always, Always, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS use sets.

@Pimgd commented back to his response. Lists are overkill and allow dupes, this means they have 2 disadvantages against Sets.
don't recommend worse solutions ftw.

1:34 PM
@skiwi Why?
A list is an ordered non-unique collection

@Pimgd nvm

A set is an unordered unique collection

And it was actually a second-party webservice that returned the results in a random order

You're only changing 1 of these (order)
so why also change whether the values should be unique?

@Pimgd wrong again...
he's changing 2..

1:36 PM
I mean in the requirements
You wanted an ordered non-unique collection before
now you don't care about the order anymore
so it can be unordered non-unique

I'm still need to figure out if the issue is on my end or on the web service end

why add the unique restrction

I think I am going to program a Langton's Turtle
Langton's ant is a two-dimensional Turing machine with a very simple set of rules but complicated emergent behavior. It was invented by Chris Langton in 1986 and runs on a square lattice of black and white cells. The universality of Langton's ant was proven in 2000. The idea has been generalized in several different ways, such as turmites which add more colors and more states. == Rules == Squares on a plane are colored variously either black or white. We arbitrarily identify one square as the "ant". The ant can travel in any of the four cardinal directions at each step it takes. The ant moves...

I'm happy that at least the Java devs see all the existing issues and acknowledge them
You don't want narrow-minded people on the lead

Well sorta?
I hope they got it right
They seem to have a plan
which is better than nothing

I hope they will make it for Java 10, say 3.5 more years
Java 9 is not the goal, though finished features may always make it... if there is an actual benefit

4:20 PM
As someone who doesn't review code, I'm honestly not sure what sort of information is important in a title on this site.

@AlexM. The title might as well be "API code needs a code review on Code Review."

in short... why is your code interesting to be reviewed?

@Pops Honestly, the titles are almost irrelevant.

@Jamal well technically, it might as well be
that's the point of code review after all

Though I may need my own code reviewed pretty soon. Although really I should just figure out the proper architecture for my little toy program in the first place.

4:21 PM
@Donald.McLean But we also don't need the same damn title on every question on the main page.

@Jamal Well then, only reuse the non-damned ones.

tags are more useful than titles here tbh
jump to the C# tag and go from code review task to code review task
you may name them however you want, they're still code review tasks
but when you put this near the rather atypical philosophy that answers should complement each other
I kinda feel SE's architecture is not that well fit for code review

@AlexM. I disagree on that..

alright

@AlexM. ... and yet, we make it work.

4:24 PM
well

titles have a big influence on which questions seem to end up in the hot questions too

we also make game jams and project showcases work on gamedev meta

@bazola that's always the case.

but it's still workarounds that don't feel natural

@AlexM. you want to create a new network then? feel free ;)

4:25 PM
@bazola yeah that's a valid point
@Vogel612 I... didn't even think of that
what made you think I did?

Well if you say, the "framework" in which this happens is suboptimal, and you seem to be quite dissatisfied with that, then you should create a framework to better support your idea of that...

that's some flawed logic

and that can't happen in the context of SE network..

you can't even modus ponens your way through half of that

?? my latin's a little rusty..

4:27 PM
On the other hand, bad titles can be a problem anywhere (such as "NEED HELP PLZ"), but we can at least try to discourage them. It's understandable if a new user doesn't know about this right away, but they can still be told how to improve their question.

In propositional logic, modus ponendo ponens (Latin for "the way that affirms by affirming"; often abbreviated to MP or modus ponens) or implication elimination is a valid, simple argument form and rule of inference. It can be summarized as "P implies Q; P is asserted to be true, so therefore Q must be true." The history of modus ponens goes back to antiquity. While modus ponens is one of the most commonly used concepts in logic it must not be mistaken for a logical law; rather, it is one of the accepted mechanisms for the construction of deductive proofs that includes the "rule of definition"...
basically there's no way to get from being dissatisfied with a piece of software to writing your own software like how you did

@200_success: Any idea on how to approach this? It looks like it should stay closed.

@AlexM. in chat (or meta) you can seldomly MP through the whole thing....

I much prefer to keep making sense everywhere
I don't let my brain take pauses

everything is based on your observations. And if you can't assert your observations to be true, then everything else based on that can't be asserted true..

4:30 PM
how do you even observe something that's false
rather, how is the observation itself false

@AlexM. the observation in itself can't be verified.

Suddenly very philosophical in the 2nd monitor this morning

You got an object A.

3 days and a half before vacations ! OH YEAH

@bazola nah I don't have time for this

4:31 PM
as soon as you observe it, your mind has an observed object of A, which is not necessarily A
so let's call it A'

@Pops Grease Lightening!

> DRYing

if you base your assumptions on A', then it can't be asserted, they also apply for A...

respect to whoever managed to understand that "to make an API more dry" means to apply DRY to it
I sure had no idea that's what was meant
@Vogel612 I've been through this crap so many times before
google for something like it, find an opinion that opposes yours and imagine I said it :D
it's better for anyone involved

I changed that title a bit, at least to remove the bad grammar from it. We're not looking for perfect titles, just titles that reveals something specific about the code.

Ohhhh tough question.

I'll keep it locked for an hour, and with a comment pointing to this post.
