Wow...
here in The Netherlands some colleges/universities are disallowing using any type of watches, due to smartwatches
Which is okay
Then some people come with the argument that: "Looking at the wall clock will cause me to lose my concentration, whereas looking at a regular watch would not"
WTF people?
I call being able to memorize formulas, etc. in college/university bull either way. If you can make the exam in 3 hours, with a full book if needed, then I think you are qualified. If you have no clue what you are doing and first need to read the full book before starting the exam itself in those 3 hours, you will not pass either way.

12:35 PM
I am working on a C++ project, it takes 10 to 15 minutes to compile it from scratch.
It only takes seconds on a friend's computer T___T

@Morwenn cough Java

@SimonAndréForsberg That's more like a problem with my computer.

And let's get to the facts: gcj is as slow as g++ on my computer.

> On average, one reviewer will find roughly half of the defects on their own. In fact, in a study at Cisco, developers who double-checked their own work found half of the defects without the help of a reviewer at all!
Interesting @Donald.McLean.

12:46 PM
@Morwenn My favorite build system was a 14 processor Sun that could run 28 concurrent compiles.

That's just because someone asks them to double check their work
Very easy for hawthorne effect to slip in there
What would happen if I walked up to your desk and said "did you check your xxxyz class for improvements?" and you went and checked?

@Donald.McLean Well, a 12 core computer compiles in 7s what takes 10mn to my computer...
Good ol' single core...

@Morwenn The computer that I'm talking about was one that we were using in 1998, back before the first multi-core chips were created.

@Donald.McLean Was that during the Roman Empire era?

Hi everyone! I've just read the lolcode question! It was so good ! Made me smile :D!

12:50 PM
@Pimgd I would find issues with my xxxyz class.

@Marc-Andre Did you go "lol, code"
2

@Pimgd Pretty much yeah :P The code looks like a bad Stack Overflow question !

@RubberDuck That's pretty much what I'm talking about. You're not finding those defects on your own; you're finding them after being prompted by an outside source.
@Marc-Andre It's a pretty bad StackOverflow question since it works and there isn't really a problem

@Pimgd Well I'm more talking about the syntax of lolcode.

12:53 PM
@Donald.McLean Looks nice :)

And bad questions of SO

@Morwenn Well, in 1998 it was a screaming power machine. 75MHz processors and 768MB of RAM.

Good morning!

Q: How to filter by a value X of a given array Y with fallback?

JurikI wrote a function that solve a special problem. But one of my 'special hardcore software engineers' told me that this is a bad solution - but he will not give me a better solution. @Yuushi I was trying to be sarcastic.

@Morwenn No. I actually have a life.

If people have those variable names in the first place, something needs to change.
@Pimgd @Yuushi is correct

Okay I'm not doing this... I have to finish certain segments on my own here and I can't do that when the code already looks like a bomb exploded inside it

For what it's worth, in my experience, reaching out to contact people is surprisingly effective, and often people respond like people, and are genuinely nice, and accomodating.
I sent an e-mail to Steven Harper once. I got a nice reply (personalized, possibly from an assistant), and he forwarded it to the Canadian minister of Foreign Affairs, who then responded to me too.

Outlooks is really adamant about me replying to this particular email... just sits there thinking about it...

Sure, I've had similar situations and it's nice... but why are you inviting non-coders to a code review clubhouse/treehouse ... via twitter?

Good question, because .... it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Also @Phrancis 's comment in the starred messages list looks really funny cause it's all caps and makes totally no sense unless you knew it was code.
LOLCODE has bridged code and English.

It'd be interesting to see her reaction to knowing she is a meme/tradition for a bunch of computer programmers ;)

The function [im2col][1] in MATLAB is very useful to vectorize Patch based Image Processing algorithms.
The problem is the function isn't optimized and doesn't use C Code.

I'm only after its 'sliding' mode of operation.
I wrote a MATLAB code which mimics its functionality. The code is written C style so the translation by MATLAB Coder would be direct ans easy to allow optimizations.

function [ mColumnImage ] = ImageToColumns( mInputImage, blockRadius )
I dunno how well it copies

usually when you start with a=b you get rid of b in the rest of the equation

@rolfl Yeah, and I noticed that he posted a new, better version
@Malachi (a - b) == 0 because a = b, so you're dividing by zero in the last step. That's a big no-no.

@Malachi Division by zero can do all sorts of things.
Oh, Simon says, already

888 views.. damn

if they changed the b on the right to an a, the equation would be the same on both sides.
and it's legal to do that

I just don't see how the equation works like that
How do they arrive at 2 = 1

@Pimgd - th first line is a = b ... right?

2:15 PM
3 votes from being by top question already!

@Mat'sMug A problem for me I guess is that no one knows how to review :(

So, in the 2nd last line, they have: 2(a-b) = a - b

Someone needs to give me work to do..... I'm golfing (poorly) for the love of all that is good..... codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/37045/20807

Your language is so close to C so it is much easier to review

but, @Pimgd - what is a - b (given that a = b) ?

2:16 PM
what happens first
a - b or 2x both

What the 2nd last line is saying is that 2x0 == 1x0, which is true.
because, a == b and a - b == 0.

Well you're making 1 last jump there but okay
They're saying something wrong

A: Neatly Transforming Anorm ResultSet Into Map[Parent , (Set[Child1], Set[Child2]))]

PhrancisI was hoping someone would review your scala but I don't think it's going to happen. So I thought I would at least say something about sql. Alias names Table aliases are handy especially for very long table names, however I feel that your naming is too minimal. Single-letter aliases tell Mr. M...

it wasn't.. Ahah, I'll read it but I think I got my head around the complexity, thanks to you! I'm just wondering, most people here seems to put the brackets around a one line statement (Say if(true){asd();} instead of if(true)asd();). I'm not used to do this, is it something I should start doing? I don't think it isn't a convention or anything, but is everyone doing it?

those that don't end up getting slapped ;)

@TopinFrassi It is a formal part of almost all coding standards.

you should always be as explicit as possible about scopes, imo

Those people who don't do it can do silly things, like lose millions of dollars.

@rolfl Hopefully you are okay with that edit.
Hey @Pops

@syb0rg I am.

But but... I don't want to lose millions of dollars... Alright thanks, I'll start applying this

@TopinFrassi A small fruit company called "apple" wrote some code without the braces.

Damn this is hardcore for a pair of brackets
Noted, always put brackets

the way it happens, is 1-liners are great when you write code, but they cause problems when you maintain it.
So, the person writing the code is OK, but it is a time-bomb for the next person in line.

Me and my cat enjoyed the Mat's Mug lolcode question

:)

I must say I never worked with big projects and always had to maintain code I was regularly in, so I never had to deal with this

Grats on the shiny silver badge Mug.

I wonder what the passive views/votes will be on that one...

Well, I was sort of hoping for [badge:announcer], but it looks like hot questions is what powered that rise, not twitter.
announcer is awarded at all sorts of times in the day, so it does not appear to be a 'batch' process.
rather, it appears to run every 5 minutes or so.
