@Phrancis ugh. gotta rethink this over.

@Mat'sMug You're still working with databases?

yeah, but MySQL now
and it's my database, I'm designing it from scratch :)
pulling records from flatfile dumps

8:01 PM
For work still though?

yeah

cool
Damn, I'm busy with work for one day, and I'm so far behind on various forums and news sites

@Mat'sMug I'll be here if you want to bounce some ideas.

thanks! I might come up with something in T-SQL tonight, and ask on SO how it would be done in MySQL, I'll keep you posted :)

Q: Multi-process FizzBuzz in Elixir

Onorio CatenacciSo I was playing with writing FizzBuzz in Elixir; this is my first, naive implementation: defmodule FizzBuzz do def getFB(n) do cond do rem(n,15) == 0 -> IO.puts "FizzBuzz" rem(n,3) == 0 -> IO.puts "Fizz" rem(n,5) == 0 -> IO.puts "Buzz" tr...

8:08 PM
Bahahahahahahaha take that !!!!!!!

@Mat'sMug don't screw it up! do it Right! LOL

damn right!

so @timPost said he was shipping on Saturday! so does that mean it will be another 6-8 weeks?
@Mat'sMug I got no Stars!

@Mat'sMug If you want it done right, do it yourself.
=)

TTGTB

8:17 PM
@Mat'sMug that or just email it to me I'll convert it tonight

'night @skiwi!
@Malachi I'd expect it early this week ;)

NICE!
I can't wait!

@Jamal Done. I think that I found one or two mistakes :p

Q: More idiomatic way to write this Python coordinate parser?

WCharginThis is a Python 2 script to take in a file in one of two formats (unknown), and standardize it. The data are coordinates in the xy-plane. They represent airfoils in the first and fourth quadrants: x should always be positive, and y may be positive or negative. The magnitude of each coordinate o...

@skiwi I'm considering showing you my FXML and just kindly ask you to fix this mess...

8:21 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg is that SFW?
sounds like some Dirty XML to me....

@Malachi FXML is XML files for JavaFX

@Morwenn I have corrected the one given in the comments. Note to self: encapsulate things into functions first.

@SimonAndréForsberg I figured, I was just trying to be funny....

@Jamal Always ^^
I am adding yet another remark about something that struck me.

Hello everyone!

8:24 PM
Cool! You seem to be the only other C++ review around today. Must be a Monday thing...
Hello!

Hey @Svante

@SimonAndréForsberg Hey Simon, can i ask you a Java question? :)

@Svante sure

@SimonAndréForsberg When I'm going to let the user input something in a string variable, like "y" or "n" do i do variable = scanner.next(); ?

@Svante scanner.nextLine is what I usually use.

8:28 PM
@Jamal And I am not even doing a C++ review, but a mere algorithmic/design review :p

@SimonAndréForsberg Oh okey, thanks!

Ok, new remark added to my answer :)

@Morwenn That's what I've been looking towards, especially with the encapsulation. Have you anything to say about that as well?

Like this, variable= scanner.nextLine(); @SimonAndréForsberg

8:30 PM
@Jamal Appart from my last remark which deals with the responsability of the functions, I don't have anything to say about encapsulation.
@Jamal LifeForm is a good idea since you can derived several kinds of players and/or monsters from it.

@SimonAndréForsberg Hmm, dosen't work, it just kinda skips that line when i run the program :p

@Svante I strongly doubt that.

Can i send the code to you in some way so you can look? @SimonAndréForsberg

www.pastebin.com

@Jamal Also, using ints is fine. You probably don't need huge values, and Loki would tell you that unsigned should only be used to represent bytes and that unsigned don't even prevent errors and may create some more.

Q: load images, manipulate DOM, store/retrieve data using localStorage

zokI wrote a little code sample which: load images manipulate DOM (replace images) store/retrieve related data using localStorage Here's the code and demo: http://embed.plnkr.co/hTecMEP9VB300qNhzB2D/ It works, but many parts could be improved. To begin with: I believe these lines should be t...

pastebin.com/mLEuAL56 @SimonAndréForsberg

@Svante I believe this is your problem: if (exit == "n")
google for "how to compare strings in java"

okey, thanks! @SimonAndréForsberg

@Morwenn The reason why I pass the whole object to add_EXP() is because exp is encapsulated. I also don't think I should make Game a friend of LifeForm.

@Jamal I added yet another note. Your last edit probably introduced a bug.
@Jamal I think that you should add a function to tell "how much experience I reward" as I said in my answer :)

8:38 PM
@Morwenn I was aware of this, actually. I thought back() would return a non-const reference as long as the function itself isn't const.

@SimonAndréForsberg I changed it but it still skips the variable = scanner.nextLine(); line :p
When i run the program i don't get the chance to even type in y/n

@Morwenn In other words, don't "absorb" EXP from a monster, but let Game decide?

@Jamal Let the monster know how much it rewards when killed.

@Svante show me the output of your program

@Jamal If you add quest objects, they will also know how much exp they award when cleared with a similar function.

Q: Regular Expressions for finding HTML code in Python

brettwbyronSo, I've been given another task from my professor, and this one is bugging me. Write a program that can replicate this sort of exchange: `What is the url to the course page? http://registrar.indiana.edu/browser/soc4148/index.shtml Searching for departments on: http://registrar.indiana.edu/...

Q: C# Property or Function to obtain information about a collection?

user1071777Suppose I have a MyList class which extends ObservableCollection<MyObject> where MyObject has the Boolean Property Enabled. Let's say I want the number of MyObject objects that have the Property Enabled equal to true. Should define this as a Property or a Function? In MyList class, should I us...

@Jamal Concerning current_monster, you could add a const and a non-const overload to solve the problem :)

@SimonAndréForsberg pastebin.com/DWGjcMhu

@CaptainObvious This is probably better for Programmers.
@Morwenn Would a const overload serve any special purpose?

8:42 PM
@Jamal I don't know. You may have to call the function in a const context, in which case it would probably make sense.

Okay

@Svante The problem might be that you are using multiple Scanner objects in your code. Use only one scanner and pass it along to all other methods that need to use it.

@Jamal That const-correctness thing can be a mess ^^"

I'm still trying to figure out the EXP thing. I wonder if I'll need virtual for this.

If you intend to create collections of different monsters (different classes) that award XP from different ways, it may be the only way.

8:46 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg Do you mean i should use the same scanner in every class cause i only got one scanner in each class

Right. So, like, another derived class (MonsterCollection) of Monster?

@Svante Yes. Same scanner in every class.

@SimonAndréForsberg It's pretty wierd cause it worked when i did it with intergers :p

@Jamal MonsterCollection could be a collection that abstracts the virtual mechanism. It could be a good idea.

Without having followed the discussion: it sounds like you're talking about the Composite Pattern

8:49 PM
@Morwenn And I'll need to learn polymorphism, then. I'll start with these other things-- this is part of the game-expansion.

@Jamal I was about to propose concept-based polymorphism, but that's a bit complicated to explain in a chat.

I'll try to figure it out for myself, then. Right now I'm trying to work out the EXP thing.

@Phrancis same :p

Good thing I managed to refactor that stupid music accompaniment in one night, I'll send it to the studio again so he can tell me the artist liked the first one better.

Q: Simple wrapper for an API

akh2103This is a wrapper for an API. For now all it does is get a certain document or search for relevant documents from a document store -- although I plan to build out more features later. I'm new to PHP and want to both improve my PHP skills and develop "idiomatic" PHP style. Thanks. <?php class P...

@Morwenn I actually got the EXP-absorbing idea from Loki, if it matters. ;-)

@Jamal As good a reference as any :)

Ugh, I may have to keep it as is. I'd rather not fiddle with the encapsulation just to avoid this.

Haha @Phrancis

9:08 PM
@Svante that's what he did last time. "I don't like the sounds you picked for drums" OK so I changed them. "Oh I liked the old ones better". Since then I have learned to make a copy of the tracks and keep the original.

Haha, artists must be really annoying ^^ @Phrancis

Q: Identifying "Matching Bigrams" in Large Text Collection

duhaimeI have a large number of plain text files (north of 20 GB), and I wish to find all "matching" "bigrams" between any two texts in this collection. @Svante you have no idea. But at least he's a repeat customer so I try to treat him good.
I can't look it up from here but go to youtube and search for "Jacob Resch oh marie" good summer time song. That's him, he sings and plays guitar (quite well I might add) @Svante

@Phrancis I will look him up right away

See you some other day folks! :)

later @Morwenn!

Ugh. Was on the phone with this guy for 30 damn minutes.
@Svante you like the song?

@Phrancis The Marie song?

Yep

@Phrancis Yeah it was really good
have you produced the music in that sonbg?

Girl is pretty cute too. I've been told she is a bitch though
No I was not involved with this one

9:47 PM
Haha, the actor?

Search for "Drew Alexander The Best Days" I made all the music on that album. I put some samples on my website
Yes the actor
Got another two albums for other artists where we made almost all the music coming out soon
All Pop/Country music which is not my favorite thing to work on but it's big around here

The drew Alexander is a girl singing right?
So i know i found the right one ^^

Yes
Young girl I think she's 16 or 17
She sounds great on the album but she sucks live, because she insists on playing piano (even though she is not good at it yet) there is no way in hell she can play the piano parts we wrote and for some reason refuses to just sing over the instrumentals we made.

Ugh, I left chat on at work again. Bah.
yay, . Great can't spend anything until Friday.
FML. Moving is so expensive.

10:58 PM
Hehe i don't have that kind of problems since I'm only 15 ^^ @Phrancis
I do have a job though

That's good, enjoy it while it lasts :)

Haha i do ;)

Alright I need to find me a really bad piece of SQL code to review and tear apart

Need something to take my frustration out on...

Why? :p
oh
didn't read the last line
You're frustrated on the money thing?

Yeah. Account was overdrawn $150 when my wife got paid last week because of electric company. We failed to take that into account.

11:02 PM
Oh
That's not fun :(

Right. We'll be eating a lot of ramen noodles this week.
Maybe I can turn in the music project and at least get a bit of money, not much though

11:24 PM
Hope you get money from the studio :)

11:35 PM
Hey guys :)

Thank you. I need to step out for a bit
Hey @AlexL

Hey there @Phrancis
Hello @Svante, I thought your question was actually a very neat one!

Hello @AlexL! Thank you! :D

You got some good reviews out of it

Yeah :)

11:37 PM
It's pretty cool you're learning to program at your age

Many people who program for a living haven't learned to program yet :P

nhgrifHALUserDefaults First of all, the calls to synchronize can probably be eliminated. It's quite rare that you actually have to make this call in order for the data to properly persist, and making the call every time you store something in defaults completely eliminates any advantage you'd gain by...

It's a little depressing to sit in on interviews
heh I remember that one

Part of the interview process should be a full background check of their StackExchange account

Welcome to 4K, @nhgrif!

nah

haha, but i haven't really learnt yet :P The code is pretty awful ^^

like the blog post indicates, you can filter quite a few with stupid simple programming problems

@Svante Well then being on CR is probably one of the best places to be
@DanLyons True

Yeah :D @AlexL

11:42 PM
FizzBuzz is pretty well-known at this point, but even something like balancing parentheses can stymie most

@AlexL Have you looked at my code?

@Svante Yeah a little

@AlexL Any thoughts about it? Do you think i'm heading the right way or thinking completly wrong?

@Svante If you're looking to make a quality piece of OO, I think you're almost there. Of course, there's a lot to be said abut what could be done better, but I think you've got a good idea

999 views!

Thanks! @AlexL That's what i was wondering, if i was doing it OO :)

My advice: follow the tag and check out the code the really good guys are writing

How do i follow a tag? @AlexL

@Svante If you clcik on that button in my message

@AlexL i just subscribed to java but it didn't show up in my favourites

Up top you'll see a link "Filtered Questions"

@AlexL huh, didn't know about that

That'll have all your favorites for each site, plus the ability to edit and add tags
@Mat'sMug Yeah, neither did I. Just found it while looking for a different page xD
@Mat'sMug Congrats btw

Haha it helps, doesn't it

11:56 PM
@Mat'sMug kicking myself for not using "irrational" in the review

@AlexL sure does! "Look 'ma, I can read code!" has 2,270 views so far, 99% of which occurred in the first 24 hours. Title has to have played a part ;)
@mjolka lol - BTW I'm really self-debating which answer to accept here. Both are excellent.

yeah, ben's answer is really good
i've read through it several times and there's nothing i can disagree with
