Noone?
Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?
Meh, OK.

<.<

@skiwi Nice, I'm trying it out right now.
@rolfl What do you need?

I need one person, to flag-for-moderator attention.....
on a comment on CR.

@skiwi When using put 0 0 the field is not updated until end of turn (but you perhaps knew this already?)

(but only one person).

9:02 PM
@rolfl What do you want me to flag?

The forEachRemaming can be done in batches, where a number of pages are analyzed, and then they are 'accepted', and then the next batch happens. But, in essence, this use case is not a great example for the performance benefits of forEachRemaining(), other than by introducing a second thread for the analyze, and the first for the accepts (which could be slow). — rolfl ♦ 40 mins ago

What should I flag it for?

That looks good ^^^^ flag for moderator attention, Rolf said to do this
(I have an issue with comment flags I need to understand).

Thanks.
Huh, my only options are to Delete my comment, edit my comment, or dismiss the flag.
There's no way to mark it as 'helpful' and do nothing.

9:04 PM
@skiwi Got an Exception here for you: (when I wrote "help" after a couple of turns)

@rolfl how could the flag be helpful if no action is taken?
"thanks for bringing that to our attention, we'll ignore it"
i guess you are looking for symmetry with Q/A flags

@rolfl flagging?
sorry I went to take another Vicodin. I was asleep when I was supposed to take another one and woke up in pain again.....

@DaggNabbit There are lots of reasons why people may feel a comment needs to be brought to the attention of a moderator (privately).

@Malachi Follow House's lead and take six (or so) at a time, around two to three times per hour... "I'm not a real doctor, but I play one on TV."

@JerryCoffin I only have 13 left. I don't know if the pain will subside by tomorrow... but I bet I would sleep pretty good!

9:17 PM
@rolfl in cases where they don't expect any action to be taken? I'm not seeing it.

@DaggNabbit - there are a number of places where in SE it is documented that to get moderator attention to things that are not related to any particular post, that you can flag anything for moderator attention.

ahh, that makes sense
like if you want two accounts merged or something
so you still expect an action to be taken, but not on the thing you flagged
I guess instead of telling people to flag anything, tell them to flag anything but comments =p

Exactly.
There was a rash of 'ex-famous' dictators signing up for SE a while ago, and they created no comments, or posts.....
I was flagging things repeatedly that were unrelated.
(flagging my own posts).
Now that I am a mod, I can see all the crap I generated;-)

> Rolf said to do this – Simon André Forsberg 19 mins ago declined
@rolfl The decline there, that can be understood as you saying "No I didn't!" :)
I didn't expect any other outcome to that flag though.

That's the problem I am trying to identify/process.
it appears I have opened a can....

9:29 PM
I think the only way to solve it is a MSO feature-request?

Well, I am hounding some folk in other places.... there may be some things I have missed as well.

Is the moderation system really that complex?
Isn't it just three buttons? Delete, Edit, Dismiss?
What can you possibly have missed then?

So, StackOverflow is forcing people asking questions about Apple's new programming language to use instead of just ...
This is because there's already an existing which has a whopping 56 questions in 3 years.

@nhgrif I believe I gave the best suggestion in the M.SO thread on the subject.

I respectfully have to disagree.

9:37 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg dismiss automaticlaly declines.... and I don't like declining helpful people.

@rolfl But you already know that, so what can you have missed?

Okay so... hrm...

Seriously? Just retag those 56 questions and be done with it... Ugh. SO...

That's kind of my feeling.

@nhgrif Then you're clearly wrong, so your opinion means nothing anyway. :-)

9:39 PM
I did not know that until I confirmed that I did not miss something.....

You can't include dynamic libraries in iOS projects. The supposed reason is because they can be loaded/unloaded at runtime, and as such, you could download executable code post-review, into your app...
This makes sense to me... except... maybe there's some restriction to Javascript that I don't know about... but you can download and execute Javascript within your app...

@rolfl OK, then I understand. Makes sense.

Moderator-attention flags are not common on comments....

@nhgrif What possible harm could JavaScript do to the iOS system?

In the past, they have all been resolved with a comment-delete.

9:41 PM
I don't know.

(at least I have).

I know almost nothing about Javascript or what it can do operating in iOS.
iOS aside, what could Javascript do to my computer running in my browser?

@nhgrif My guess is that it can probably do very little (to iOS). Although, knowing Apple, all apps can do very little to the system AFAIK.

They've opened the OS up with every version of iOS, and with iOS8 they're opening it up even more.

@nhgrif What could it do, or what is it intended to be able to do? It could do just about anything, though most of that is unintended.

9:43 PM
@nhgrif Honestly, I'm not sure what JavaScript is capable of when it comes to your system. I think the worst case is probably opening a couple of links, liking some crappy posts on Facebook, etc.

What could it do? What could an ill-intentioned programmer do via Javascript in my browser to harm my computer?

@SimonAndréForsberg - ben a mod now for ..... 67 days. Still new at some things .

@nhgrif TBH, I should say that I'm only guessing based on history. However, holes have been found in nearly every existing implementation of JS that gave attackers full root access to your computer. Based on the number of times it's happened in the past, it seems likely to me that most (if not all) implementations probably still have at least a few holes that still allow it.

"not sure what JavaScript is capable of when it comes to your system"- you would be surprised. With permissions granted by the user on a per visit basis it can access your hardware's gps, as well as other hardware components. It's not just the iOS though...

I'm pointing at iOS because I brought up the point that Apple doesn't allow dynamic libraries (other than their own) in apps.

Q: Async operations in WebMethod

artesdiHow to improve this code, without to return async Task? [WebMethod] public string Login(string login, string password, string deviceId, string appVersion, string xuid) { var authTask = _SSOFrontendService.GetSSOTokenAsync(login, password, deviceId, appVersion); ...

@nhgrif This is about 99% Apple being arrogant and some minuscule fraction of a percent about actual security.

So, what I really like about is this idea of optionals.
When you're declaring a primitive-type variable, you can append a question mark to the type, which makes it non-initialized, and you can check it like a bool to determine whether or not it's initialized

@nhgrif Sounds like what C# has had for years....

for non-objects?

10:04 PM
And what Java has as of Java 8. (Although it's probably not as efficient in Java as in C#)
Yup, bool? and int? and other stuff has existed in C# for quite a while.

Interesting. Didn't know.

I remember a couple of years ago when I was translating some C# to Java and I encountered such code, took me a while had to ask for help to understand it.

Q: WebService async WebMethod, C#

artesdiHow to simplify this method? Handle an exception in this method - is it good idea? [WebMethod] public string GetMDSToken(string xuid) { var tokenTask = _mapTokenService.GetMappedSSOTokenAsync(xuid); var tokenTimestampTask = _SSOFrontendService.GetSSOTokenTimestampAsyn...

Oh, speaking of Java, pre-Java 8 you could just use Boolean instead of boolean, i.e. wrap it in a non-primitive variable. As said though, not as effective as C#.

You've been able to do that in Objective-C for forever. There's an NSNumber class which handles all of the primitive data types.

@DaggNabbit Just for one example, look though the list of fixes in FireFox over time:mozilla.org/security/known-vulnerabilities/firefox.html
Hard to find even a single release that hasn't had at least one critical fix in a subsequent release (except the newest, of course).
Of course, some of those may not be related to JS, but it's a fair guess that ~80% rely on JS for at least part of the attack.

Q: c++ built-in gcd function parameters range

johnthere is a c++ built-in function for finding gcd ( greatest common divisors ) of two numbers , in c++ ( g++ 4.3.2)... its __gcd() . can anyone tell if this function works on large integer values as well, eg. long long int ( 10^18 )? or what is the maximum range of integer value it can handle ? ...

This is off-topic, right....?

Yeah

SO migration probably

w00t! Checkmark! Take that, @SimonAndréForsberg, I'm a big bad +15 ahead today! :D (now I'm only within a hard work reviewing day's reach! 181 points on the wall)

@JerryCoffin ah, I thought you were saying that someone could somehow root my box by running js in a browser (that isn't running as root, of course)

@DaggNabbit Yes--"privilege escalation" generally means: you browse to a site (usually running as a normal user), they get root access to your computer.

My lady is going to learn Python!!!

^^TS

10:42 PM
Yeah. Off topic. @nhgrif

@JerryCoffin every one I've looked at is talking about escalating the privileges of the script to the level of privileges of the browser

@Malachi then she'll create a CR account to get her code reviewed? :D

if the browser is not running as root, the script is also not going to have root access in those cases

depends on the process' privileges
process > browser > js
right?

well the browser might use several processes

10:44 PM
@DaggNabbit Yes, the browser on its own obviously doesn't create holes in the OS--but those are typically coupled with some hole in the OS to get root access.

@Mat'sMug I hope so!!

hmm then app domain > process > browser > js

I got her going on Code Academy right now.
my daughter wants to learn Ruby.

@JerryCoffin fair enough :)

and my son wants to learn to code too!! LOL my family is finally starting to understand me!
lol

10:46 PM
@ckuhn203 when you say Sidenote, how can I expose this to vbeCodeModule, but not client code?, do you mean handling the error in vbeCodeModule.Initialize?
@Malachi that's so cool! I hope at least one of my little twins will want to learn programming, and that at least one of them will want to learn to play guitar!
(poor unicorns)

@DaggNabbit ...and most OSes seem to have enough holes to let attackers through on a fairly regular basis. The only obvious exception (among reasonably widely used OSes) would be OpenBSD--but while it's quite capable as a server OS, it's fairly bare-bones for a client.
Unfortunately, some things that are common on clients (e.g., windowing systems) are almost all pretty much "broken by design" with respect to security. X is arguably the worst in this respect, but MS Windows and MacOS are tied for a very close second place.

back to relaxing and drinking iced tea. the tea seems to be helping the healing process
I really need to set up a file server soon lol

@Malachi I think "when not taking Vicodin" would be soon enough for that...

(afk)

@JerryCoffin lol I agree. I need to buy some hard drives and stuff though. I want one where I can keep Digital copies of movies and stuff too....

there is no price tag? I want one!
well actually I want a server or two worth of these

Q: Increase sorted string concatenation

LiondancerWhat is the fastest and most efficient way to do this: word = "dinosaur" newWord = word[0] + ''.join(sorted(word[1:])) output: "dainorsu" Basically I want to sort everything after the first character in the string as fast as possible. @JerryCoffin or a couple of these, I hear they last longer than disk drives hgst.com/solid-state-storage/enterprise-ssd/sas-ssd/…

@Mat'sMug I would like stop that error from happening the way I caused it.
I need vbeCodeModule to be able to access it internally, but (preferably) hide it when I'm working when working with code module. I don't think it's possible.

11:24 PM
@Malachi Well, I guess if you can settle for only a couple terabytes, they might be adequate... :-)

Q: A general purpose GUI data input, with validation, but unclear about best object design

user44635When I'm throwing together prototype code, I don't want to spend extra time setting up parameters, or chasing down problems from entering parameters wrongly. Q: Building/installing BASH script - does it need major changes?

MrVaykadjiI'm writing a bash script that has for goal : to build a node program from sources to install the built program on Ubuntu Linux to allow the user to rebuilt from most recent sources to add a small CLI (it has none) to add a small GUI for support (like report-bug,fix common errors, etc.) So, ...

@ckuhn203 not sure I get what error you're referring to, but I think you're looking for Friend accessibility: it's pretty much like internal in - other libraries cannot access it, but inside the library, it's exactly like it's public: in you'll make the method or property a Friend, and then the code that references your library doesn't even know it exists.
> In many cases, you want programming elements such as classes and structures to be used by the entire assembly, not only by the component that declares them. However, you might not want them to be accessible by code outside the assembly (for example, if the application is proprietary). If you want to limit access to an element in this way, you can declare it by using the Friend modifier.

@JerryCoffin I guess you are referring to the privilege separation in OpenBSD's implementation of X
that's a good point

oh wait, that's the MSDN I think.
bah, there:

A: What is the difference between Public Property, Friend and Public Variable in VB6

MarkJThe scope qualifiers Public and Friend determine whether clients in different projects can see the item. Public items will be accessible to client code in other projects1 and code in the same project. Friend items are accesible only to code in the same project, not to code in other projects....

@DaggNabbit Certainly one of the major points, but not the only one (though some of their most obviously useful and/or easy to implement innovations like address randomization have been adopted into most other OSes since).

@ckuhn203 in other words, if it's you can't compile a .dll and you're F'd. Unless you could have more than 1 VBProject in your solution, you need to write that code somewhere you can compile it into a .dll that your client code can reference and consume.
