my flight gets in at 10:45 if all goes perfectly, then i have customs, baggage claim, and have to get to the tube. I'm certainly going to try, but if anything at all is delayed, looks like I'm taking crazy-ass bus rides.
Blerh.... I really should of considered all of this before booking a flight. Not one of my smarter moves. :/
Or looked into it more than the day before I leave... lol

you think cabs are so expensive there?

I'd be going from London Heathrow airport to around the King's Cross station area
easily a 30 mile drive

Please ping me when he gets here

@MadaraUchiha Hey, I'm here.

o/
Basically, in my newer projects, I don't do validation directly on the form fields.
(Talking about server-side only here)
Your service fills in the domain objects with the form values. The domain object's setters have the business validation rules in them (User is in appropriate age, things generally make sense).

Why not? If you have an extra email confirmation field and the have to match, how do you deal with that? The domain object only has one email property and doesn't worry about that.

Then your mapper, or whatever you use to store your object in the database, attempts to store the object to the database, in which case, the various constraints might raise exceptions, which are caught by the controller, and redirect back to the form view with the errors bound to it.
@KidDiamond You shouldn't do email confirmation.
It's pointless.
The whole point of requiring password confirmation, is that you can't read the password to review it. So the assumption is that you won't make the same typo twice.
You can read and review an email address, so it's pointless.

@MadaraUchiha It's the only way for my users to retrieve back their passwords. And they also have to confirm their email to complete the registration process. I think this goes more into UX.

10:52 AM
@KidDiamond Confirming that the mail is theirs by sending a secret code there is fine (and encouraged).
Making the user type it again on his registration is just annoying, and most users would copy/paste and be done with it.
As for password confirmation
Given that, again, this is a UX feature, you only need to validate it on the client-side.
If you really want, you can just have your password setter for the user to accept two fields, and compare between them (or throw a ValidationException).

But shouldn't a domain object not deal with direct form inputs?

@KidDiamond Ideally, it wouldn't.
Ideally, all data integrity checks would be done on the RDBM (i.e. database)
But MySQL doesn't feature much in that area.,

Just stepping inside this discussion quickly... Wouldn't you want data integrity checks between the RDBMS and server? In case you want to switch out the RDBMS to a different one?

@MadaraUchiha Okay. A question, do the domain object setters have to have the same constraints as the in the DB? E.g. first name < 35 chars, not null, etc.

11:05 AM
@skiwi Whatever integrity rules you may have depend on your RDBM.
Ask yourself this, why would you want to limit the user to 20 characters?
@KidDiamond No.

@skiwi I have no plans on changing to a different RDBM in the future.

They do completely different things. You don't need to perform the same checks twice
@KidDiamond No-one does. It happens.
The database is to check things like "Does this already exist in this table?" or "Is this longer than the maximum allowed?"

@MadaraUchiha So checks that are already done by the DB should not be done again by the domain object.

@KidDiamond Correct

@MadaraUchiha They should rather validate business rules, like if A changes, is B still valid.

11:07 AM
The domain object does the more complex checks, checks that involve business logic, which is basically their jobs
@KidDiamond Yes, exactly.

Hmm, okay. I'm starting to grasp it.
Are domain object properties usually 1:1 with the columns in their table in the DB?

@KidDiamond That depends
Ideally, no. Because you don't want to tie your objects to the database
Remember that the database is not the only place your user might map to. It might map to a file, to session, to a form (prefilling fields), etc.
Your user should be whatever you need, and it's the job of the Data Mapper to map correctly to whatever storage you want

okay
one more question if you mind

A user might hold a $categories field, which holds a collection of Category objects
The user_categories table might be completely separate from the users table

Yes I was gonna ask something regarding such things.
Lets say if a user in the database has multiple orders.
The domain object should then contain an array of those orders right
?

11:15 AM
Your domain object is not aware of the database
It doesn't give a f--- about how the database looks

lol

It's your database schema that needs to adapt to your domain objects, not the other way around

Hmm, I thought a domain object is supposed to contain everything that's related to it.

@KidDiamond Yes
A User object might have a $categories field that holds an array of Category objects
Where did the user object get those objects from? The user doesn't know, nor cares.
It could have been directly from the controller, it could have been from a mapper (from database), or it could have been directly injected with a test.

I see. That's the concern of the data mapper right

11:17 AM
Yes

@MadaraUchiha I know it a little different.. IMO Domain Objects shouldn't validate stuff themselves..
Domain Objects are stupid containers..

@Vogel612 No. Those are arrays.
You wouldn't need to make classes if it were only for a simple data structure.

they have some properties - ideally strongly typed ;) - and allow getters and setters on them.
darn php...

@Vogel612 Doesn't have to be PHP...
You can have a HashMap in Java for example
To do the same job.

nope..

11:19 AM
If key => value is your goal, you don't need a full class.

@MadaraUchiha Is it actually possible to get error information back from decent RDBMS? In MySQL I wish you good luck if you want to do length validation on database side instead of in domain object...

but it's key => strongly typed value

@skiwi MySQL sucks
I use PostgreSQL

and not key => object.
which sucks too...
SQL in general sucks..

Sadly I only have MySQL experience... Though I'll be moving to MariaDB at least at work
Which ones do you consider to be not sucking?

11:20 AM
@skiwi The best way is to dive in
Just start a project with Postgres as the main RDBM, and fix the fires as they pop

@skiwi I hereby recommend using Hibernate, writing some POJO's and no more give a fck about Database ;)

@MadaraUchiha So, if a domain object doesn't have any business rules to be validating, I suppose it's fine to just have public properties?

@KidDiamond Don't break convention. If everyone use getters and setters, use getters and setters.

@KidDiamond it would be, but you shouldn't...

@MadaraUchiha If none of them do, none of them will have.

11:23 AM
@KidDiamond You don't have domain objects with business rules?

@MadaraUchiha you gonna recommend an array now??

@MadaraUchiha No, I don't. It's a simple application that just gets the name, email, and password of the user.

@KidDiamond you should have some validation rules..

Nothing to be validated.
Yes I have validation rules

stuff like "email should contain an @"
well take these as business rules...

11:25 AM
Is that a business rule?

it's about the same..

Well then yeah, I gues I have business rules. lol

well it's not exactly a business rule, but it's one of the jobs that a domain object has
 domainObj->setEmail($email)
and inside you got stuff like:

Yeah, but my form validator also validates this input. before the input gets to the domain object
the user input*

public function setEmail($email) {
    $regex = {some email-validation regex};
    if(!preg_match($email, $regex)) {
         throw new validationexception;
    }
}

11:28 AM
So is double checking really necacessary then?

not sure about the syntax, I usually don't do PHP, but I hope you get it ;)

yea i get it

well if you validate server-side, no...
but if you validate client side, you definitely should do it again on the server..

I read somewhere on stackoverflow that ideally one should have 3 layers of validation.

never trust the client.

11:29 AM
View (client side), Controller (form input and such) and Model (last layer of validation).

View: fieldlength, numbers only, bla bla
Controller: business rules, recheck client stuff
Model: paranoid check if you created your database correctly..
in fact, as the model can be reused by a different controller - theoretically, you could also pack it all into the model, and just bubble stuff back...

@MadaraUchiha So I guess my UserValidator class is just useless.

@Vogel612 I second that!

11:44 AM
@KidDiamond who said that? you do know that is called defensive programming..
don't assume, validate

@Vogel612 Things break when people do that ..... :(

The "world's funniest joke" is a term used by Richard Wiseman of the University of Hertfordshire in 2002 to summarize one of the results of his research. For his experiment, named LaughLab, he created a website where people could rate and submit jokes. Purposes of the research included discovering the joke that had the widest appeal and understanding among different cultures, demographics and countries. The History Channel eventually hosted a special on the subject. The jokes The winning joke, which was later found to be based on a 1951 Goon Show sketch by Spike Milligan, was submitted ...

@Pickett awesome! thanks! Welcome to the CR voters' club :D (looks like there's heavy caching on these pages though), feel free to spend up to 40/day, this site needs more voters! :) — Mat's Mug 16 hours ago
and how many other voters aren't being shown on the voters page?

They should recommend this Stack Exchange on SO and Code Review : fitness.stackexchange.com :P

@Mat'sMug because he only has 9 votes so far. You need 10 or 11 to be shown there

A: Optimization of aStar in Java

VoiceOfUnreasonTeach a Man to Fish If you have a program that is running slower than you expect, and you want to know where it is slow, the right answer is to profile the code. There's a question at StackOverflow that describes a number of tools that will allow you to run the code and find the hotspots. Alte...

Look at his Location btw:

@SimonAndréForsberg is there a meta link for that?

@Mat'sMug There is common sense for that: codereview.stackexchange.com/…
@Mat'sMug Don't know

(facepalm)

I doubt we have only users who either spend 0 votes, or 11+ votes :)

I presume the vast majority of the site's voters (first-time askers voting on answers to their post) are in that "silent" group.

haha I turned this:
    For Each e In model.Elementos

        If e.Tipo = teGlass Then

            If e.Vidrio.Material.Tipo = tmSurfaces Then

                If e.Vidrio.Material.Clase = "SLAB" Or e.Vidrio.Material.Clase = "SLABP" Then

                    If ((model.Opciones("(44) ENFIGURATION PENTURE") = "NON ENFIGURÉ" Or model.Opciones("(44) ENFIGURATION PENTURE") = "HORS STANDARD") And model.Opciones("(00) SYSTEM") <> "S0") Or ((model.Opciones("(44) ENFIGURATION PENTURE") = "RÉGULIER" Or model.Opciones("(44) ENFIGURATION PENTURE") = "HORS STANDARD") And model.Opciones("(00) SYSTEM") = "S0") Then
into that:
    Dim partitions As List
    Set partitions = helper.GetModelPartitions

    Dim slab As ModelPartitionHoleWrapper
    Dim Insert As ModelPartitionHoleWrapper
    Dim partition As ModelPartition

    For Each partition In partitions

        a_Details = a_Details & ";" & partition.ToString & ";"

        ' add warning if partition has no slab, or more than 1 slab... but not if it's not a door:
        ' (yes, this [MelcoDoor_PriceInsert] method also prices Solarcan doors, and non-doors such as standalone thermos)

@Mat'sMug String literals OMG!

and the thing wasn't even doing what it was written to do, been telling them for more than a year.. just now I was green-lighted to rewrite that chunk of crap!
