Q: TestExplorerWindow, the event-tossing UI

Mat's MugFollowing up on Integrating Unit Testing functionality into an old COM-based IDE, I made quite a few changes to the UI, and now the code-behind for my TestExplorerWindow is starting to feel somewhat bloated, at least compared to what it was... I blame the added toolbar and the fancypants progress...

Frederik AalundI'm writing an utility function that returns the extension(s) of a boost::filesystem::path (v3). Q: How to fix/optimize this calendar program? [Using Zeller's Congruence]

KawaiiiiI have this calendar program that I've finished but it's kind of long. Also, could someone tell me why I'm getting the wrong starting days even though I'm following a formula? Thanks. #include <iostream> #include <conio.h> #include <string> using namespace std; void printDays(); // easy fun...

@CaptainObvious Fix and optimize are the same?
(it's off-topic anyway)

> could someone tell me why I'm getting the wrong starting days even though I'm following a formula?
use a magic formula. should work.

Now I'm really feeling that should be dealt with.

as in... optimized?

The tag itself

12:54 AM
@Mat'sMug just put two underscores in front of it, it makes it magical

lol
C++ != PHP un fortunately

I get the feeling that it's usually used as just another tag.

hi @RubberDuck!
@Jamal OP's last question had a similar issue:

Q: Vending machine implementation

KawaiiiiHow would one optimize this code? import java.util.*; public class VendingMachineAssignement { public static void main(String[] args) { Scanner keyboard = new Scanner(System.in); double item1 = 1.25; double item2 = .75; double item3 = .90; double it...

> And also, for example, if I enter 5 for item and .10 for paid, then why does it say Please insert another $1.4 instead of 1.40? Even though 1.50 - 1.4 and 1.50 - 1.40 would be the same, how come it does not display 1.40?

Well, if tags about concerns are meta tags, then they go.

1:09 AM
There are 17 answers for me that are common to both: codereview.stackexchange.com/…

Not sure I agree yet, but we should at least be consistent.

the net result, is that a merge/synonym between them will bring me real close to a gold badge....
BUT.....
If you start down that root, you should consider: , and a bunch more too

^^^ that

Yeah...

1:12 AM
I've already started writing an optimization post for Meta. Should I continue, or just discard it?

Doesn't hurt to talk about it?

Perhaps not.

It's not even a new issue, but one that still concerns me. I'm not too worried about the other tags as they're a bit more specific.

@rolfl @Jamal this is broken with 4 close votes. Can you guys get out the hammer?

Q: Excel VBA binary search class module

sgp667I have a long list of sorted strings in a Workbook, and I have to find a lot of values in it. all right, all right.. .closed

That's 8 meta-like tags that are all > 200 questions (thus part of generalist-pool).

but all that's missing is a Dim in front of the offending declarations...

Broken is broken...
If it doesn't compile, there's no way it's been tested. That's all Mug.

lol @flagged chat post

[unit-testing] seems like a good tag. Indicates that the code is a unit test, right?

Yeah. That ^

Q: Should we just put an end to [optimization]?

JamalThis is probably one of CR's oldest tags, next to refactoring and best-practice, both of which have already been removed. @RubberDuck are you answering it?
lotsa Hungarianish

BURN... ALL OPTIMIZATIONS
(btw @Jamal this semi-new user (me) agrees)

@rolfl Yes, definitely! Looks like we're due for an update soon. — Bill the Lizard 2 mins ago

Tim Post did get a laugh from my past request to have burninated. :-)

1:37 AM
Right, this burnination thing... is a bad idea.... before we request it, there's better alternatives, right?

For such a large tag? We never looked for alternatives to , though it was even more obvious that it needed to go.

It would make sense to me to synonym from optimization to performance.
performance, to me, is a noun, optimization is a verb.
optimization is what you do, performance is what you want.

"optimize" is a verb :p

you know what I mean,.

(as is "perform")

1:40 AM
But are all of the optimization questions about performance? I also see it being used just when someone wants an optimization, likely not really knowing if it's really needed.

English speaking people don't know english from an academic perspective.

"This code looks very ugly. How can I optimize it?"
5

@Jamal - that's the base issue.

lol

lol

1:41 AM
for each question where optimization could mean performance, there's another where it means something else
wiling optimizaiton out will be a really, really big hit on the site.

Too tired right now @Mat'sMug. If there's no answer there in the morning I will.

Remember, there's also questions tagged optimization that are about optimization, like, for example, computing the smallest number of cuts to make to get a specific shape.

It does smell Hungarian.

So, burning optimization is radical.

Weeding out each question into different categories for new or existing tags? I love editing, but even 1500+ questions intimidates me. And then there's the edit-floods.

1:46 AM
Is there any kind of correlation? Between and other tags frequently found alongside it?
Like or such

Is it possible to leave out language tags?

I'm out. Game of Thrones.

this is one of the things i do for the project prototype. This is yet to be the product i am going to present to the class or users. Thus i am not checking my grammar. Yes if this is to be present to the audience, i will have to do a thorough grammar check up to make sure that it looks friendly to the users — mmm 28 secs ago
Well I hope he make bigger effort than in this comment....

@Pimgd The pedant in me hates "Creating energy", but I get yer point

@Yann The linguist in me feels I used the wrong word and finding the correct word for things is hard.
And the programmer in me wishes there was a syntactic construct for identifying questionable statements.

@Pimgd Let's call the whole thing off?

You could use "transform" if I can remember correctly.

But I guess "releasing energy" would be the better phrase?
releasing the energy stored in the fat

3:09 PM
Yeah, that's probably the word. Converting?

It's not "energy" until it's actually used. I would think "transferring and storing carbohydrates" would be more accurate ;-)

Converting looks good too.

Could cross-post on English.SE and Biology.SE if we're really worried :P

@CaptainObvious VTC
someone elses code

It is energy. Potential energy. A ball on a shelf has potential kinetic energy, which turns into kinetic energy when the shelf stops holding it up.
Acid in a battery has potential chemical energy until the chemicals are used to make the usable energy.

3:14 PM
I'ma start referring to kebabs as potential energy

We could also start referring to coffee and Mountain Dew as potential code.

Food has potential energy in it. Your body uses it eventually for energy to move or think, etc

Q: ColdFusion code to highlight names optimisation

JaredeI have created a set of functions, that when given a struct of structs full of names, it will highlight those names that appear in a body of HTMl based text. Is this the best method of doing this? <cfcomponent> <cffunction name="init" access="public" output="false" returntype="PartnerHighligh...

anyone using Visual studio here?

Can anyone recommend a good steampunk game? Someone mentioned Turing, so I thought Babbage -> Difference Engine -> Steampunk.

I need to have some XSL files put into the running folder with the installation, I am not sure how to make that happen

Are they added to project @Malachi?

yeah

As resource?
Go to properties and set copy local true

for a build action they shouldn't be set to content? instead they should be Embedded Resource?
or plain resource.

I dunno not my fprte
Forte

3:24 PM
I am going to change them from Content to Resource, because they aren't getting copied over as content

just add them to your project and set "copy to output directory" to "true"?

@JeroenVannevel already did that.
I think I figured it out

and it's not in your /bin/ folder afterwards?

I need to add the content files to the installer
building and installing
now I just need to fix the XSLT file....LOL

@Jamal I missed your milestone of 10k votes!

3:39 PM
@JeroenVannevel yeah I had to create a new installer and forgot to put stuff in it, I don't know exactly how those things work but I learn something new about them every time I create one. lol

A: Improving equal spacing between elements in layout

MalachiI don't know what the standards are for Layout Naming on Android, but I can tell you that these names are not very good. textView2 btn_distance_walked textView3 none of these accurately describes what they do. you should probably look of naming schemes on Google or something like that. btn_...

no votes on this at all?

I'm getting noticeably fewer votes the last couple of days
so maybe I'm not the only one?

it is a holiday, kind of so maybe people are out doing things and not on their computers

I'm noticing a sharp drop since Tuesday

weird

you noticed too?

3:49 PM
meh, I don't answer a lot but my last two weren't too well received either. Questions didn't get many views either though
sometimes it just happens

I guess so
oh looks like this question will get closed
actually I wanted to answer it, been saving it for a rainy day

Q: jQuery-Keyframes allows dynamic generation of CSS3 keyframes with callback events

Jake CattrallI want to learn best practices for structuring these kinds of small jquery plugin libraries. I believe I am using a bad design pattern and what I was going for is fewest line numbers and minimal code. Please advise on any better practices and any ways I can reduce the code down further. $(windo...

too bad

Are questions like this acceptable on Code Review?

Q: How should I inject headers when unit-testing Web Api controllers?

Jeroen VannevelThere are a few resources out there that showcase how you can unit test Web Api 2 controllers but one aspect I haven't seen mentioned so far is injecting headers in your request. I noticed I can directly set the header of the controller like this: var userController = new UserController(new Use...

@RobertHarvey: I was considering posting it here first but figured it was a little of both and Programmers had more chance of a response

3:52 PM
@Marc-Andre it's ok, you can still be there for the 10K edits ;)
monking!

It would be ontopic here so feel free to move it if it doesn't belong on Programmers

Monking @Mat'sMug

I think it would get a better response on CR. The folks at Programmers are allergic to "best practice" questions.

monking Mug!

Partly because of cargo cultism, and partly because they don't always know the answer. :)

3:55 PM
Yeah, I can imagine. Too bad, because I couldn't find anything about this specific usecase
I doubt it will get an answer here but that's okay, I can add another long-standing question to the list

zombie

I'll just assume I defined the best practice right there

https://github.com/DanPantry/craft
here comes the C++
(note: I hate cmake already)

My standard response is "The best practice is the one that most effectively meets your software's functional and non-functional requirements."
A tautology in response to their tautology, in other words.

Ohhh... Hi Robert
