So, from this repo, how do I create a new section for a new program with multiple files?

@Jamal hook up a Git client to the repo's URL, and commit there :)

@retailcoder I was thinking a bit larger of a scale, but including WEC.
@Jamal I added you to the C++ team.

@retailcoder: Wait, what?

What's the scope of this, the reason for it?

@Jamal Yeah, it get's a bit complicated here. Just stay with it and you'll be golden.
I recommend reading the Git book.
It's a good read, and not too long.

Q: Diving into Javascript for a game I am making. Having trouble with GUI

HotenFirstly, the game: http://www.hotengames.com/gridia/playground/ WASD/Arrow keys to move. Hold shift to run. Click and drag to move items. Some items (here, just the roses) may be stacked. Hold shift to move half a stack, hold a number key to move that many, and hold shift+a number key to move ...

@retailcoder I was thinking WEC, and then a bit of some other stuff.

Yeah, this is gonna take me a while.

@Jamal Yeah, you might want to save that for tomorrow.

I will.
The above question appears to be off-topic.

5:07 AM
@retailcoder By other stuff, I was thinking larger projects (hang with me here). This could be something like the CR community adapting the SE chat API code and updating it.

5:17 AM
@syb0rg so not for CRWEC stuff. More like a CR Community project.

@retailcoder I want to include the CRWEC stuff to, but also some projects of the CR community.
If that is all right with you guys.
That is just what I'm imagining.
@retailcoder That repo you added is in the wrong place, it is supposed to be a C# team repo.

It's gone.

Do all repos get posted to the main group, and then we have to sort them?

I can't believe there aren't more VB people here. I think I should tag all the VBScript questions with the VB tag too.

I think we need to put more thought into it. I'll write a meta-discussion so we can come up with "rules" of some sort. There's a reason CR isn't already on GitHub.

@Malachi Do you have a Github account?

no, maybe...IDK

@Malachi Seems lots of VB coders don't give a rat's @$$ about code quality - just make it work.

that's most coders in general, not just VB :)

@retailcoder & @Corbin I don't like that at all.

5:32 AM
@Malachi what's up?

Well, one new user is dissatisfied with our policy regarding reviewing on the OP's code. That user may argue it on Meta.

@retailcoder I will leave the Question un answered for a little bit longer and see who all likes your answer and who all likes my answer better then I will pick the one with the most votes
oh really @Jamal? what policy?

About only being able to post your own code.

@Jamal Then what prevents him from posting a bunch of the Linux kernal code?

@syb0rg common sense?

5:40 AM
it's a legal necessity that people only post code they own the rights too
otherwise it can't be implicitly issuing a CCA license

@retailcoder He doesn't seem to be possessing much of that if he wants us to review code that isn't even his.
@bobobobo What is up with the big white square on the top right?

Q: Why is only my own written code on-topic?

AliI tend to disagree with point #2 on the Help Center: Did I write that code? I believe any code, written by one self or any one else should be eligible for code review. Many a times, you're reviewing others' code. Any specific reason for this restriction?

@retailcoder It did take some confusion with the yield keyword before I (believe that I) understood it. When returning an IEnumerable, it feels like yield makes it possible for the method to "pause", return one thing, and then for the next iteration of the IEnumerable the method "continues" until the next yield. Kinda strange behavior, but kinda useful too I have to say.
@retailcoder Thank you a lot for the compliment by the way, I appreciate it :)

MSO Question about these flags in the top bar that doesn't seem to disappear:

Q: Remove the flag notification in the top bar when I have done my job with it

Simon André Forsberg(I have searched for a duplicate, didn't find any, but I still get the feeling that I can't be alone having noticed this so there might be a duplicate out there) I have the moderator privileges on Code Review. Even though it's quite rare that flags appear over there, it is still quite annoying ...

Good for you for asking ... I'm already getting to the ignore-by-default that notification.

I thought it was strange that no one else had asked it... Perhaps everyone has been thinking "No need to ask about this, someone else probably already has asked about it"

Frankly, I don't understand the system......
For me, I can't seem to tell what the flagger's reason was for flagging it.
I don't know what I am agreeing with, or not.

The reason for the flag is shown directly under the free-hand circle in my image on the MSO question

It's like my choices are: ignore it, close it (but it's already on hold), delete it (but there's no delete option).... up/down vote it, but what then?

In this case it was "Closed without comment (auto)"

Yeah, WTF is that though?

It seems to be a flag by that @StackExchange bot. Applied whenever a question is closed without having a comment.
Mostly it seems to be an invalid flag, since the close reason provides a kind of comment.

Ahh... so adding a comment to the question may remove the flag? ... but it has a comment... I am so confused.

The flag has to be dismissed by those with the moderation privilege. You dismiss it by flagging it as an invalid flag. (I know, it feels quite counter-intuitive to dismiss a flag by flagging it....)

A: Advice/improvement code-wise

Simon André Forsberg You have a lot of inconsistent indentation. Inconsistent positioning of {, are you going to place it on it's own line (common C# style) or on the previous line (common Java style)? The JavaScript conventions is to use the same conventions like Java for this. Put your global variables (playerx, ...

It could need a whole lot more killing though.
jsbeautifier.org is really a very handy tool to fix JavaScript indentations.

@SimonAndréForsberg on some of these Questions, I try to edit the code to see if the tabs are acting weird on the formatting, and if they aren't and the code really is indented badly then I say something about it. I didn't check that one, I am just saying in general. good answer though

@Malachi You have a good point there. Sometimes I forget about checking that but this time I did :)

Just one of the reasons why this site needs at least one mod (any mod) active at most times. Had none been there, the comments section would've erupted in disputes by now.

@Jamal TS. You're the man!

@Jamal I believe that even if it would have, your vacuum cleaner can be applied afterwards. :)

Haha. It really does concern me. We're still trying to graduate, and one of the last things we need is unhandled conflicts. Even with a (mostly) self-sustaining community, a mod is still needed at all times.

You shouldn't feel the obligation to sit around and looking at questions and answers all the time to make sure nothing gets out of hand, that would not be good for you I think.

@Jamal seen the latest comment on the CoD post?

Small report: the answer ratio leveled down to 1.8 :/ — Morwenn 6 hours ago

Yes I have.

I personally don't think the answer ratio is that important.
We do tend to have longer answers than most other sites I believe

It seems that that's one of the smallest issues we have, next to questions per day (which isn't even an issue for us). As Grace Note has said, we need fewer unanswered questions and more high-rep users.

Yeah, but I'd like to see it around 2.0

round(1.8) == 2.0
So it still is "around 2.0"

4:35 PM
Getting that one to 2.0 (or even 2.5), means lots more answers, which means lots more votes and lots more rep awarded

Currently we have 10828 questions. Which means we approximately have 19490 answers. To get the answer ratio up to 2.0 we'd need 2166 answers. Thanks, but I'll pass.

I have been working on some VBScript and SQL questions lately.

It's even tougher considering this site doesn't take too kindly to quick, small answers.

and trying to max out my votes on SO

Of course I will still answer questions when I feel that I have something useful to say, but adding an answer just because? No thanks.

4:38 PM
^^ TS @Malachi
@SimonAndréForsberg nah, I guess it's fine. But we shouldn't hesitate to add useful answers on questions that have < 2 replies, even if one is already accepted.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about it. Just focus on the zombies.

@Jamal Exactly. If we count for 30 minutes per answer, that's 1083 hours of pure answering. Let's say we would have 25 monkeys working on answering, that's 43.32 hours per monkey.
@retailcoder I agree. If we have something useful to add, then we should add it.

Would you say, answering-wise, rolfl counts as just one monkey or more monkeys? :-)

@retailcoder I am actually trying to get my gold badge for votes on 600 questions. I have voted on more answers than I have questions by almost 200 votes

@SimonAndréForsberg our two meta-answers are tied. Who wins?

4:47 PM
@Jamal @rolfl is just one monkey

@Jamal, @SimonAndréForsberg, @retailcoder I was looking at some questions and noticed that some of the answers were really low quality or that they didn't cover a lot of the review in the questions. I shared some of those with you guys because they weren't in my area of expertise, and I couldn't provide anything more than what was already given, but I knew there was more to the code that needed reviewing

@retailcoder The OP wins, he's the one that gets his question answered.

good point

Yes, but you also also get more tag score, which is good for tag badges. :-)

@Jamal End of the year? Pffft. I feel underestimated.
(TS by the way)
You just need to remember, @Jamal, that you don't get rep for edits anymore...

5:22 PM
I know. :/ I don't think I've even reached my 1000 rep max for suggested edits.

@Jamal how does that work anyway? is it once you don't have to have your edits approved it doesn't give you the +2?

@Malachi: Yes, you only receive the +2 from approved suggested edits to posts or tag wikis. Direct edits no longer award rep, which is obviously good so that no one can build up tons of rep from edits.

@Jamal Admit that you would if you could, right?

well you can only amass 1k rep from edits, is that 1k for edits and 1k more for tag wiki edits?

@SimonAndréForsberg: No, because I don't want to hoard rep like that. You could then pretty much edit any post any number of times for rep.
@Malachi: They're both combined in the 1K as they're both considered suggestions.

5:30 PM
@Jamal they would have implemented something with the Rollback function that would have taken back edits or whatever I think

I believe you can get +2 for tag-wiki edits no matter how much rep you have... I'm not sure about this though.

@SimonAndréForsberg: No, you no longer get +2 for wiki edits after being able to edit them directly. That privilege is for trusted users.

@Jamal OK, so you get +2 rep for tag-wiki edits until you have 4k then (4k on Code Review, that is)
I've never been a trusted user before.

Yes.

Okay.

Perhaps asking "How to perform code reviews" isn't the best topic for our chatroom either, but I figured that if he wanted to know then we could tell him how we normally do it around here
Otherwise, I think Programmers is the best place to ask such a question
(but I believe several questions has been asked there already about the topic)

Per our help center, if your question is about Tools, improving, or conducting code reviews, then it's off-topic.

@Donald.McLean Once they get full commitment, they get reviewed again before launching the beta. That's probably the hold up. Also, I think there's very few people committing to things at the moment... I have committed to the Artificial Intelligence proposal, and although it's going slowly forward, I wish it went faster.

@SimonAndréForsberg better get in there and mess that stuff up, I know what's going on, I watched all those Terminator Movies back in the day, and I watched iRobot (stupid Apple) and I watched the Matrix. we better put a fork in that toaster (Galactica Half Reference)

7:19 PM
Aw man. I think I want to post an entry for Tim's contest.
I'm sure I won't win, but I don't care.

@Malachi TS to you, man. TS to you.

@Malachi Movies on that subject aren't half as scary as the books.

@Donald.McLean which books? Fahrenheit 451? The Giver? (not really AI books but those are the closest ones that I have read i think)

@Malachi Fred Saberhagen's Berserker series, for one.
The Achuultani from David Weber's Dahak series.
I will admit though, that the computer in The Forbin Project was just fricking creepy.
Also, I think that group consciousness alien races are generally scarier than AIs.

A: Should employees with head injuries be allowed to post on meta?

retailcoderA long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away... There was this Bounty Hunter that travelled the StackExchange world like a Chuck Yeager, always the fastest gun in the west, always on time, always right, never afraid to steal a checkmark. Most of his posts managed to get 500 views in 2 days, but a...

A: Should employees with head injuries be allowed to post on meta?

JamalSo there I was, playing Poker with Tim Post's yodeling Sock Puppet head. The yodeling kept pissing me off, yet I was still able to pull off a Full House to his king high, ending the game. He got up, threw all the cards in the air and, like a Marauder, tried to attack me. I grabbed his little s...

@Donald.McLean I will probably look for this series (Fred Saberhagen's Berserker series) , it sounds like a side story from several star trek episodes, and similar to Battlestar Galactica

@Malachi Except that it predates BSG by a wide margin and Star Trek by a narrow margin. The first Berserker short story was published in Jan 1963.

I saw that. I was just saying that it fits my interests. and that I would probably be able to read them cover to cover no problem. (I have ADHD)

7:58 PM
damn that Forsberg guy
he was faster than me ;)

@tomdemuyt What have I done now?

reviewed the js RPG faster than me
just kidding
as in, I am not actually damning you

aha
that was hours ago :)
I started that one pretty quick, but I think there is more that can be said (the move function can probably be improved, for instance)

yep, I got that covered in my review

@tomdemuyt Ah, didn't notice you had written one! I will check it

Q: How do i refactor this code of hashes in arrays

SeebI'm iterating through a number of text files, trying to locate all carriage-returns, and individually save the text between carriage-returns. I get the index numbers of all carriage-returns, but I haven't got the slightest about saving the text. Basically I want to save every string between two ...

@tomdemuyt Well done, best answer I've seen today.
Your answer actually made me realize that there's one more thing to be added, a small but important bug

No way, I always code like that, there is no such thing ;)

@tomdemuyt No such thing as what? :)

a requirement to have player = and { on the same line

8:30 PM
@tomdemuyt Given your ;) I think your kidding.
Or does the auto-semicolon insertion not apply there?

it does not
now I am going to have to build a jsfiddle to prove it

@tomdemuyt But `return
{ };` is buggy, right?

possibly , but var definitely works
oh wait
just hit F12 and try in console ;)
yeah, that wont work
Hmmm

@tomdemuyt I was thinking about the point Semi colon insertion on Your Language Sucks, I assumed this applied to initializing objects as well

I just move office , and jsfiddle seems blocked here ;|

8:37 PM
@tomdemuyt No JSfiddle? Of all possible sites to block??
It seems like you are correct, indeed it does work to initialize like that.

Fortunately they have not caught on to jsbin
weird , works no
now

@SimonAndréForsberg My favorite language isn't there! And rarely requires semi-colons.

@Donald.McLean Which language is that? English?

@SimonAndréForsberg Scala.

@Donald.McLean Ah, of course :) I should have known.

8:43 PM
ABAP is missing as well, what an oversight

9:03 PM
@Donald.McLean Where is my ? Why is that not on Your language Sucks:

@rolfl Cobol sucks because: Nobody knows the language.

Ha. People are being downvote-happy on the MSO contest post. I don't think I've violated any of the rules, either.

@Jamal downvotes don't count.
Can you see how many upvotes I have?
Last I checked I was 2nd... but that was only net vote counts

@retailcoder: Yeah, that's what confuses me. They must hate some posts so much, that they'll downvote anyway.

I hope I get the tee :)
(uh, they'll actually ship it in Canada?)

9:10 PM
@Jamal you know why the answer on this question was deleted? codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/37693/…
@retailcoder You got my vote there

Thanks!
(didn't put much effort into it anyway, was just to write something)

@SimonAndréForsberg: Yes. That answer was posted on Programmers. When the question was closed, it automatically rejected the migration, deleting all answers here.

aha, thanks
Sorry @Jamal, seems like I have more hats than you now.

Yeah, and you're about to surpass my rep. Oh well. Can't stop anyone from rising above. :-)

9:30 PM
Now it's time to watch the latest episode of Person Of Interest :) Catch you later.
Hi @syb0rg, bye @syb0rg.

@SimonAndréForsberg Hi and bye.
So I see there has been some progress made on the Github idea, such as a meta post. Have we made any executive decisions yet?

No sooner did I say something about the delay in new sites getting created than the private beta I was waiting for started.

@retailcoder I got a the Bounty Hunter hat :)
And it's large enough to fit.
I like it a lot.
It's intimidating.

@syb0rg nice!! earned on CR?

@retailcoder Raspberry Pi.

so the leaderboards are for hats earned-by-site right?

@retailcoder Yes.
No surprise I am the leader for hats on the Raspberry Pi site. I beating the person in second by three times the number he has.
