A: Edition of formulas from a generic New Contributor for the first post or comment: how do they learn it?

quidA new user to the site is shown the following page before asking their first question https://math.stackexchange.com/questions/ask/advice It starts: Welcome to Mathematics Stack Exchange! To improve the chances of your question getting an answer, make sure that it: Uses MathJax...

Is the advice page still shown before the first question? My impression was that it was removed at the time of this announcement: The new ask page is now live on the network!Martin Sleziak 25 secs ago
See the paragraph starting "The /questions/ask/advice page has been replaced by a new modal for first-time askers, ... "
I have asked about this in MO chat some time ago - but I did not get a response there. (However, MO never had the /ask/advice page shown to the first time askers.)

@MartinSleziak good point. Presumably not. I had not realized this change. It be interesting to know what exactly is shown now. — quid ♦ 17 mins ago

@MartinSleziak I did not realize that change affected this. I don't know what exactly is shown now. I'll check.
What's slightly inconvenient is that I'll need to register to ask...

Yeah, that is a bit unfortunate.
Should some discussion be started on meta about customizing the modal window mentioned in the above post?

@MartinSleziak maybe it is customized?
Who knows?

I got this on a new account before I started to type the question:

@MartinSleziak that's great. Both because now we know, and even more so as the information is still there.
If you don't mind, I'll include the image in the meta post.

1:39 PM
That's ok, feel free to use the screenshot.
To have some record of that, I'll copy the parts that contain links:
> Uses MathJax formatting for math formulas
> Has an interesting, specific title that summarizes the question
> Describes what you know and what you don't understand (don't just copy a textbook problem!)
> Here are some additional tips:
> Before you post, search the site to make sure your question hasn’t been answered
It seems to be basically the same as in the "How to ask" page: math.stackexchange.com/questions/ask/advice

2:17 PM
@MartinSleziak it seems SE took care of the transition in a very good way. I don't know if it came up with us even; I think they just did it. Do you have any ideas for modification?

No, not really.
I did not know until now that the modal window is customized on Mathematics.
Of course, I might be able to think of a better link for searching, but I might be biased there.
Anyway, since we're talking about user interface, I'll just remind my proposal to include the "search faq" on meta somewhere in the help center: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/20352/2020/5/2 math.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/27421/…

@MartinSleziak I think it's a good idea, but I am not sure that the meta post in its current form is ideal for escalation. I'd prefer if there was on or two to the point requests.
That are also optically set apart in the question, or maybe a new to be accpeted answer that states what should be done.

Congratulations to @Dr.XanderHenderson even though despite the mask it appears he is not a real doctor, merely a mathematician. ;D

8:41 PM
@quid Thank you.
And now that I have worn the moniker for a day, I'm going to go back to normal. :)
Oh... shoot... you can only change your name once every 30 days?!
Annoying...

@Dr.XanderHenderson yes there I meant to make a snide remark about this. :-)
There are ways around this though if you want it changed.
The simple one is to ask a helpful mod.
The more complex one is to create a new user on another site chose a name there and copy it over to all other sites.
If you really want it changed back, I can do it, no problem.

9:11 PM
@quid Oh! Moderators have that power? Would you please be so kind?

@Dr.XanderHenderson yes, we need it most frequently to be able to remove inappropriate names.

Oh, of course. That makes sense.

@Dr.XanderHenderson it's done on the main sites.

@quid Thank you.

@XanderHenderson now also in chat
You are welcome
