A few friends and I have mentioned that we'd be interested in a MO chatroom analogous to the homotopy theory chatroom (chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/9417/homotopy-theory), but for stuff at the interface between geometry (and sometimes topology) and physics (typically QFT but also other stuff)

to open, here's a question I've been confused about for some time: what is a higher spin QFT?
I've seen those words appear in a bunch of hep-th paper titles over the last several months, but I'm not sure what "higher spin" is supposed to suggest.
nLab does have an article (ncatlab.org/nlab/show/higher+spin+gauge+theory) but I'm not sure whether this encompasses all uses of 'higher spin;' it seems too categorical to be such a common term on the hep-th arXiv. But I could be mistaken.
