@Wigwam - Hey, question for you. Are you a WTF certified kind of person?

4:10 PM
@JohnP - Hi JohnP, wow, my first chat room message, need to figure this out. Yes, I'm dan certified (4th) by Kukkiwon, but not instructor. As to WTF, I used to referee and was certified, but no longer, and so, at the moment, I'm not WTF certified. So Kukkiwon, yes; WTF, no.

4:28 PM
@Wigwam - Ah, ok. I'm going through the Dan Conversion program (5th dan ATA), but I want to find an instructor that can test me. My original WTF club never submitted me for Kukki, and they can no longer find my records at the school. I want a kukki rank.
I would need to relearn all the forms, tho. It's been 20+ years. :)
4th dan WTF is Master rank, yes?

Ok, I see. If you are at 5th dan in ATA or ITF, I think you can apply for up to 4th dan via the US National Dan Program. That doesn't give you Kukkiwon cert, only USNDP. Having USNDP cert will get you all WTF-competition rights as Kukki, including right to be a coach; but without Kukki you can't become an instructor. So, those are your choices for that route: 4th dan USNDP, you can compete and coach in any WTF-sanctioned event, but not be certified instructor. Total cost should be about $50 or $75 - somewhat nominal.

@Wigwam - Thanks. I've considered aligning with a local school, just don't have the time with two toddlers right now. :|.
ATA is somewhat similar, in that you can have the rank of 6th degree, but not the Master title. (ATA goes 6-Master, 7-Sr Master - 8 Chief Master). It's a minimum of a year process for each title once you successfully test for the rank.
As long as I can possibly compete and coach, that's fine. I know ATA chatters about getting aligned with Kukkiwon, but I don't hold my breath on that ever happening. For me, it kind of irks me that I put in the work, and my school never registered me. The USAF lost all my rank certificates during a move, so I don't even have those, either.

6:23 PM
@JohnP You might find a high-ranking WTF/Kukkiwon instructor to help with the lost cert. Higher ranking ones often have clout to get you past bureaucracy. Schools are notorious for charging $400 for dan "certifications" to their students, then pocketing the money - they don't forward the info to Kukkiwon.
You can try to look up your information at Kukkiwon, there's a lookup right on their website (www.kukkiwon.or.kr) - just be sure to find the English links! I am also 4th dan in ITF. So in one school, I've got master title, in the other, I'm not. I never use it, and it generally holds no value except in officiating events and when working in the federation structure. My students just refer to be my first name, as is my preference.

6:39 PM
^_^ Woohoo! Activity!
I've got Capoeira tonight, albeit after physical therapy on my shoulder (for an unrelated issue involving pulling and lifting actions that I don't do in this martial art), so I don't know how frisky I'll be.

@Wigwam I've looked on Kukkiwon, they have no record of me.

@JohnP Oh man, I think that's gonna end up an uphill battle. If you want to compete and coach, then, USNDP is the way to go. Here is the article that started all this, and therein is a link for contact information. I can tell you that the US Grandmasters Society website is devoid of information. I suspect this is going to be a work in process, but give Michelle George a shot: teamusa.org/USA-Taekwondo/Features/2016/July/22/…

@Wigwam oh, I know. I already have spoken with Michelle. I just have to get my passport size photos printed and take a pic of my rank certificate and submit. But eventually I want to relearn the forms and actually test for a Kukki rank. Unless of course the politics finishes and ATA gets recognized by kkw.
@FuzzyBoots PT can be rough for sure. I had a year of rehab for ruptured achilles, and there were days it wiped me out.
@Wigwam - What I think happened is that the owner/instructor at the time just never submitted to kkw. And I have spoken with the current (son) owner, and after 20 yrs they don't have the records any more.
