@AviD herro - saw the ping, but I must be failing to understand the conversation - how far back to I need to see?

Q: Stewardship of an ecryptfs tag

Dustin KirklandI am one of the authors and the current maintainer of eCryptfs, a cryptographic filesystem for Linux. It's been in the Linux kernel since about 2006. It's the cryptographic filesystem used by default on Ubuntu if you choose to "Encrypt your Home Directory", as well as by ChromeOS. I'd like to ...

Cheers @StefanoPalazzo - will have a read through

no problem :) This is the data he's talking about: answers.launchpad.net/ecryptfs

@AviD Got back late - had ISACA meeting after work, then gym, then band practice so brain not fully up to speed, but I think I agree with everything (just call me Socky) - not a huge number of questions that would suit Sec SE, but a few
Thanks @Stefano

Howdy all, just got the ping now
@Ninefingers, happy to chat if you're still around
@Ninefingers, and no, I've never been in this chat before, though I've been around IRC for a good decade and a half :-)
@oli, yes, I am aware of AU, and I'm somewhat active there; however, eCryptfs bridges many different Linux distros, and I can see Fedora/Arch/Gentoo/SuSE/Debian users getting fussy about asking eCryptfs questions in an Ubuntu "forum"
@Ninefingers, users should and will absolutely continue posting bugs at bugs.launchpad.net/ecryptfs
There was a question posted about a week ago that my Google Alert found, related to eCryptfs on crypto.stackexchange.com, and that really got me thinking, how nice it would be to use crypto or superuser for these sorts of Q&A

Q: How does the MOV attack work?

BenSo my question what exactly is the MOV attack and how does it actually work and what is it used for ? It's explained briefly here and I'd like to know what it is more / what is it fully used for? Thanks for any help

@DustinKirkland I'm around now :) I'm on UK time you see. Yep; I think in principle there's no problem with questions coming here, provided they come to the right site (each site has a faq and don't hesitate to wander into chat and look for their moderators who you can find on the /about page - also linked at the top - if you need to ask). Unfortunately I reckon it is inevitable we'll get one or two misdirected queries - this happens anyway - but I don't see any reason why not.
Definitely have a read of @MichaelMrozek's points above and @Oli / @StefanoPalazzo's words.
Basically, we learnt from facebook.stackoverflow.com, a facebook-specific subdomain of SO, that these things need to be handled the right way. We got a lot of facebook user support stuff that isn't really on topic on SO. But I believe that's settled down and webapps handles some bits just fine - as does that other project on SU by the looks of things.

Q: Can an ECrypt-FS Home Directory Be Backed Up Remotely

user1612The main idea I want to have is a backup script run rsync to copy my /home/.Private/user directory off to another server. This would allow the backup script to have no knowledge of the data, but mean the remote backups would be secure. That way I don't need to worry about what happens to them. I ...

@DustinKirkland see for example, that one would probably be best off on U&L. cc @MichaelMrozek migrate?

@DustinKirkland Oli and I weren't talking about Ask Ubuntu being the official support place for ecryptfs, more about where your current batch of questions should end up. As for that, Stack Exchange encourage you to list multiple resource, and to not designate one Stack Exchange as your primary forum. It should be listed alongside IRC, the forums, and so on

@StefanoPalazzo on that note, do you want the above question?

I just saw those questions and said DO WANT :)

@StefanoPalazzo Yep, sorry, I meant this one:

those are the same ;-)
@Ninefingers well - yes, but it doesn't look like they're running ubunu - so it's off topic :\

ok, sending your way :)

11:04 AM
@Ninefingers hang on, that was misleadingly phrased - it's off topic
that's perfect for UL

@StefanoPalazzo ok, I'll send to U&L

I do so love crypto.se. Every other question is "Q: I have this GREAT idea [...]" → "A: That exists, is called a ---, and here are 10 excellent links"

Well, whilst you're here - want to come to the book review thingy? chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/info/784/cryptography?tab=schedule
See the top star ----->

@Ninefingers I don't think I have a book to review, but I definitely want to pop by. Hopefully everyone else won't do the same :-)

@StefanoPalazzo I have one - I may be the only one, but never mind! Can't say I didn't try to encourage it :)

11:11 AM
Since I'm doing proper crypto these days, in production, I really ought to cough up the money and get Applied Cryptography... Which one will you be reviewing?
or is that a surprise? :D

oh very cool

Yep. There's a Q I'm going to answer when I'm home on ECC (MOV attacks) too.
Will help me learn
Hopefully PulpSpy will come along - he's got a good text he wants to recommend.
I might even super ping him if he doesn't sign up, see if I can persuade him to come :)

err, our president has resigned
that's a good start into the day

@Ninefingers howdy, howdy :-)

@DustinKirkland Hello!
Ok, any questions on any of the above stuff?

@Ninefingers, hi, bear with me here, as I'm a little new to this SE chat interface
@Ninefingers, well, yeah -- where did we decide #ecryptfs belongs? crypto? superuser? security?

@DustinKirkland I think it depends. The criteria for askubuntu.com is that you're running ubuntu. unix.stackexchange will handle general unix/linux questions, and superuser might take some questions but as this is a linux file system unix.se probably makes the most sense, or askubuntu if they're running ubuntu.
However, if the end user has a question that fits this faq or ours they're welcome to post it on those sites.

@Ninefingers, okay, well I am monitoring a cross-site filter at stackexchange.com/filters/33360/ecryptfs

@DustinKirkland Sounds good - did you see Michael's comment about having lots of hint options (irc, email, here, other places)?
Also, you can propose edits to tag wikis - e.g. here: crypto.stackexchange.com/tags/ecryptfs/info
which allows you to write summary info about ecryptfs

3:23 PM
@Ninefingers, yes, those are great guidlines
@Ninefingers, will I have the ability to move a question from one site to another, if for instance, I know it's off topic in one place, and on, in another?

@DustinKirkland Not directly, but if you use the flag option and write a custom message, I can move from crypto.
We (myself, Paulo Ebermann and Thomas Pornin) can only move out from crypto, where we're mods. Everywhere else, I'm just a normal user, so I can only vote to close as off topic, or flag if I don't have the rep.

@Ninefingers, okay, sounds good

But if you are monitoring + flagging, that will help mods greatly - we get a notification icon of flags, you see, so we deal with things we see in the flag queue much faster than if we just stumble upon it.

@Ninefingers, I'll draft some guidelines/hints from Michael's suggestion, and post them for review

@DustinKirkland Sounds good to me.
@DustinKirkland another thing to bear in mind - whilst until you get ther rep you won't be able to edit directly, but you can always propose edits - so you really can maintain your tags to a high quality. Might be worth bearing in mind as things come in.

3:29 PM
@Ninefingers, agreed
@Ninefingers, that relates to another question
@Ninefingers, I have a co-maintainer of ecryptfs, who will be helping out
@Ninefingers, he's on-board and signed-off from our end, as to using *.stackechange.com for ecryptfs questions
@Ninefingers, he has even less rep than me, though
@Ninefingers, so I'll need to help get him built up too
@Ninefingers, it seems that I start new stackexchange sites with rep 101, whereas he starts with 1... i guess that's by design?
@Ninefingers, what did I do to earn +100 on new accounts?

@DustinKirkland you'll get +2 rep for each suggested edit that gets approved, so that's fine. Best thing for him to do is be registered (so we know who he is) and wander in/talk to the other mods so we know - basically providing we can talk to you / sort out any issues, all will be fine.
@DustinKirkland You got over 200 rep on one site - if you do that, you get +100 everywhere you go. All accounts start with 1, so you default to 101.
So yes, it's by design.

@Ninefingers, perfect, thanks
@Ninefingers, fyi, his nick is 'tyhicks', crypto.stackexchange.com/users/1606/tyhicks
@Ninefingers, he's also an Ubuntu developer, and the Linux kernel committer/maintianer for ecryptfs (I develop the userspace)

@DustinKirkland an authority on ecryptfs then :) @StefanoPalazzo, @Oli, @MarcoCeppi, @MichaelMrozek tyhicks will also be monitoring when it gets going.

@Ninefingers, cheers!

thanks guys :)

3:41 PM
@Ninefingers, I'm going to buzz out of here, if there's nothing else for me, at the moment?

@DustinKirkland Yep, fine by me. Just wanted to make sure you were okay with everything we'd said etc, really.

2 hours later…
5:40 PM
@Ninefingers, hi, could (or anyone else) review my on/off topic edits and links at meta.crypto.stackexchange.com/questions/132/… ?
@Ninefingers, hopefully that helps triage questions into the right site, as the discussion here seems to be that questions of different types, even though they might be about eCryptfs, might belong on one forum or another

2 hours later…
7:27 PM
@DustinKirkland looks good to me, for the purposes of you sorting the questions. for a support page, it seems a bit overkill though. you can easily get rid of SuperUser, StackOverflow and maybe even crypto for that
I assume 95% of all questions you get will be well at home on AU and Unix, the rest on security.se

@StefanoPalazzo, okay, I can do that if you like
@StefanoPalazzo, also I was going to link to the cross-site filter at stackexchange.com/filters/33360/ecryptfs

I'd agree. It might be overwhelming for users, I think... we (crypto, security et al) could be in an "other questions" page if you so wanted - and questions asked in the wrong place should find the right place in the end :)

@Ninefingers, @StefanoPalazzo, okay, great; updated and dropped SuperUser, StackOverflow, and ServerFault
@Ninefingers, @StefanoPalazzo: that leaves, AU, UL, Sec, and Crypto
I'd agree that most questions should fall within those 4
thanks for your help!

7:56 PM
@Dustin Welcome to Stack Exchange (I'm one of the other Crypto moderators).
I think there should be some wording changes about the site names in your "guidelines".
Should I simply edit your post?

@PaŭloEbermann, sure!
@PaŭloEbermann, thanks a lot

Q: What will be the way to go about deciphering this kind of cipher?

fitzerI've come across this cipher and have tried unsuccesfully to decipher it. http://codepad.org/aea7Wuyl The only 'hint' that I have gotten so far as to how I am supposed to crack it is the word 'Cheating'. I've observed that it is a 7x7 grid, and have tried various techniques like columnar trans...
