Question to all candidates - what's your take on answers quality in "hot" questions, does site have a problem here? If needed, refer to respective meta post for more details on that...

Q: Answers quality in hot questions

gnatFor few recent months, I've got a habit of downvoting answers which quality doesn't look OK to me. These probably can be generally described as low effort and/or these lacking relevance to question asked. Opinionated slogans, claims that are not backed up by appropriate references or by ...

What candidates? We only have 1 Nominee!

WE NEED MOAR CANDIDATESSSSSSS
@Morons It's only been a day since the election started, six more days for nominations.

@YannisRizos that was a reply to @gnat 's question :)

3:03 PM
@Morons Well, yes, but the question will stay there for all candidates (assuming others appear). It's not like it must be answered today.

3:31 PM
Only six days for nominations?
How many candidates can I nominate?

@JimmyHoffa You can't nominate anyone, candidates must nominate themselves.

Damn, seems reasonable though. If someone nominated me, I would drop a duece on their car

@JimmyHoffa Well, if you have someone in mind, you can always ask them (in chat) if they'd be interested.

Regardless of the rules, I nominate WorldEngineer and MichaelT.. And uhhh..

@JimmyHoffa Hurry up and nominate yourself then.

3:37 PM
@JimmyHoffa World Engineer already nominated himself.

Good

and he's my favourite candidate (so far).

I think nobody is nominating themselves just yet because they don't want to seem too eager for power.

@maple_shaft Nah, they'll all nominate at the very last minute, to avoid comments (no comments on the next phase).

more likely this se looks like a fuck of a lot of work @Maple_Shaft

3:45 PM
@JimmyHoffa The workload is about an hour per day. Except when there's Meta drama. But we all love Meta drama, so it doesn't really count as work.

I'd be interested (though nobody in their right mind would vote for me) except it genuinely looks like a lot of work

@JimmyHoffa Yes... but then thats why we are having another election. And no matter how bad it is, remember it is nowhere near the time sink that StackOverflow is
Those SO mods are nuts
it would be like if our site tripled in activity and you cut our existing mods by 3/4ths

I would think so has lots of miss making it less work per mod than here where 25-50% of questions get killed
s/miss/mods

@JimmyHoffa It's like WalMart though... they make up for it in volume

@JimmyHoffa I've handled 97 flags the past 30 days. SO mods handle 100+ flags each daily.

3:49 PM
^^^ THIS.

eff that.

I think SO mods should be paid

how many are their?

i think just 12
whois stackoverflow mods:
oh
that doesnt work here
nvm

They probably love it, makes them feel important, not a fair trade if you ask me

3:51 PM
15 mods
but I think at least three of them have disappeared off the face of the earth

I'm happy feeling irrelevant and not working hard for it

> I'm aware of 15 moderators: Tim Post, mmyers, Won't, Jonathan Sampson, Robert Harvey, jjnguy, George Stocker, ThiefMaster, The AntiSanta, Bill the Lizard, casperOne, BoltClock, Lasse V. Karlsen, Brad Larson, NullUserException

Harvey's an so mod? He should come back to modding here and give up that crazy

Tell him to run ;-)

I nominate @WorldEngineer @MichaelT and strongly suggest @RobertHarvey quit SO modding so he has the free time to finally learn Haskell ;) and mod here again.

4:04 PM

Oh yeah and since my nominations mean nothing anyway, I nominate @Rachel just to ensure controversy

The coolest thing there is that you can add any user (including yourself) and compare to the candidates.

Now that I think about it, we should have a haskeller in mod, I also nominate @Telastyn
@KarlBielefeldt and @pdr would both make good choices as well

@YannisRizos That is really cool

I can't get that to work on my phone

4:13 PM
There are a LOT of good choices
I unfortunately don't have enough votes for everybody that deserves one

yeah, there's a lot of extremely smart folks here now that I really think about it

sorry about that.
WTH, worldengineer has 0 downvotes?

oh, that's no good. Can't have a shiny happy mod on Progse.

@WorldEngineer take the word hereby out of your nomination message, no wonder you don't have strunk and white badge

5:00 PM
@JimmyHoffa That's something I would have brought up in the THC, but might as well do it here...
@WorldEngineer WHY U NO DOWNVOTE???

@WorldEngineer don't feel knowledgeable enough to tell someone their answer is wrong? Because some answers are downright wrong
I probably have almost as many downvotes as upvotes, I think it's more important to hide misinformation than show good info sometimes.
Actually I probably don't, not my fault we have so many really smart folks who deserve upvotes..

@JimmyHoffa Your upvote/downvote counts are visible (to all) in your profile.
You're at 422 up / 39 down
I'm at 2,860 up / 6,105 down

haha, you're a hater
I just ignore a lot of bad content, or a lot of content altogether.

user55340
715 up / 684 down

My up/down ratio used to be ~ 1:1, but then I got a diamond (~ crap hunting / downvotes)
Also the counts include votes on deleted posts. I always downvote when I delete crap (and I delete a lot).

5:14 PM
I'm a bad example because I'm surprisingly apathetic. But I still downvote incorrectness when I see it
Hey @MichaelT you gonna run? You should

user55340
As I understand it, something that is -5 doesn't show up on the front page. I believe it is important to get the bad questions off the front page.

user55340
@JimmyHoffa I believe I would need a job that is more... conducive to more time spent. I believe there are better candidates than myself who want the responsibilities more.

I can't tell a bad question so barely downvote them
Bull, I think there will be like 2 candidates, nobody wants the responsibility around here

Having been a modish elsesite, the best way I've described being a mod is that of a janitor in middleschool - "bzzt Janitor to Mr. Blank's room, someone threw up." -- Mods are the unsung heros of interwebs that put up with more vomit than most people ever see outside of the health care industry. Be glad that someone is cleaning up after other people because it really stinks when they don't. And they are human and under paid.

How many diamonds are being added @Yannis?

5:18 PM
@JimmyHoffa > moderator positions available 1

Why the election btw?

It's all in the election page

Q: Does the community think we should have another Moderator Election this year?

DynamicAre we going to have another Community Moderator Election for 2013? It seems like we have one around this time every year. Does the community/mods think we need another mod? I, personally, think that (most) mods are doing an outstanding job at what they have to do, but all of our mods should be...

Yeah @MichaelT that's why I don't want it

5:20 PM
@Walter None of us is resigning, and we haven't really complained about the workload. In fact we weren't involved at all in triggering the election, all of us found out about it when Anna posted her answer here. That said, looking at our traffic growth (the month view is revealing) the past year I can understand why SE thought it would be a good time to add a new mod to the team. Personally, I'm looking forward to hazing the new guy/gal ;P — Yannis Rizos Dec 29 '12 at 9:19

Ah just one I get to vote for

user55340
@JimmyHoffa Incidentally, my 2nd grade teacher's name was Mr. Blank. His ancestors, when they came through Ellis Island left the form for last name blank. Some one else had to enter in a name, so they became "Blank."

5:54 PM
@MichaelT interesting. What's that to be in response to? I don't get it.

user55340
@JimmyHoffa My comment about being a janitor in middle school.

user20683
7:09 PM
@JimmyHoffa I don't downvote because I feel it doesn't explain enough to the user (particularly the new ones). If I have an issue with a post that I think can be fixed, I will leave a comment.

user20683
otherwise I typically vote to close and then explain why unless someone else beats me to it.

user20683
I do have a fair number of "Hello and Welcome to Programmers..."

@WorldEngineer That's... weak.
DOWNVOTE ALL THE THINGS <-- It's the mod's way

user20683
@YannisRizos we each have our own style but don't think for a moment that I'll be "soft".

@WorldEngineer It's your votes and you are free to use them as you wish. My only concern, and it's a very small one, is that you aren't using the tools as they are meant to be used. For example:

There are other stuff that are tied to score, the damn twitter bot for example. Lots of crap make it to @stackprogrammer because people don't downvote.
When it comes to voting style, I honestly don't care. I vote how I vote, and I couldn't care less how anyone else votes.

user20683
7:22 PM
@YannisRizos I'm definitely liberal with the close votes

@WorldEngineer Heh, enjoy it while it lasts. Binding close votes are no fun, trust me.

user20683
@YannisRizos I'm very aware of that

The ability to cast a non binding close vote is the only thing I miss... On the other hand, one click deletes are AWESOME!

user20683
@YannisRizos I've run guilds in World of Warcraft and Corps in EVE: Online, I'm well and used to making hard decisions on the internet.

7:39 PM
@WorldEngineer I'm not even asking about questions, but why do you never downvote answers?
hard to tell good from bad questions (for me anyway) but a bad answer is easy to tell from good

@WorldEngineer Well, I've run a squad for 9 months. Moderating Programmers is harder (mostly because I can't threaten any of you with jail time ;).

user20683
@JimmyHoffa I'll respond but it's class time and I can't use my computer there.

Many answers aren't answering the asked questions, many are technically just incorrect, some are highly subjective tainting the information with an inaccurate slant
doesn't really matter for moderation, the details of answers don't matter, just curious cuz 0 is odd

I'm officially in the running :-)

10:13 PM
@Dynamic you knocked Lisp, lost my vote. I'll be a one-issue voter, I'll do it

user20683
10:49 PM
@JimmyHoffa Consider it a quirk of my personality more than anything else. I did have some downvotes but I think they got deleted during one of the cleanups, thus they "don't count".

user20683
If I'm elected Moderator, my downvoting may increase substantially since I'd be representing the community rather than my own quirkiness.

@WorldEngineer And all your other votes would be binding. ;)

user20683
@AnnaLear precisely

11:39 PM
@JimmyHoffa I don't recall? Care to remind me?

user20683
@JimmyHoffa also weirdly enough, if you go to my profile, it says I have 4 downvotes

user20683
but on the mod page it says I have 0

user20683
hmmm

11:57 PM
@Dynamic "If the answer is no, then your probably going to end up like Lisp. If the answer is yes, then your on the right track." Et tu brute?
also you're not your

user20683
@JimmyHoffa I could never hate Lisp, it powered one of my all time favorite games.
