@EmilioPisanty thanks!
so, hmm - now that the strange works website is up, the question arises: i'm not completely sure what they do...

@heather lol scratching my head on that also. to quote heisenberg it was a bolt from the blue (iirc, his response to EPR1935). but hey its a startup. reading their manifesto, it reminds me of what musk is doing with AI via openAI... very similar model it looks like. strangeworks.com/manifesto

Does anyone happen to know the book "Explorations in quantum computing"? The second edition is some 7 years old, is that a lot in this field?

glS
from the youtube video above it looks like they aim to be a bridge between academia/research in QC and industries/businesses that want to apply/buy/invest on QC
@Kiro didn't know the book, but I just saw that it is available for loan in my university's library. I may go check it out later in the day and let you know

@Kiro The Nielsen and Chuang book is over 10 years old, but still it's THE primary reference in the field of quantum computing. So I guess 7 years shouldn't be too old to have useful information.

@glS @Blue Thanks for the input :-)

BTW the Amazon reviews of the textbook you're speaking of seem good

Anonymous
Although I haven't read it myself. Maybe I'll check it out sometime soon.

Sure, no prob

Q: When will we able to buy Quantum Computer?

DIDIx13When will we able to buy Quantum Computer or PC that has a quantum processor? The future of computation and problem solving is so close! What do you guys think? Should Quantum computers constructor sell their product for public use or only for professional and test use?

Anonymous
Phew. Is this some marketing strategy?

11:32 AM
@Blue hehe - for that to be a valid answer, the question needs to be vastly adapted :P

Q: How to make qubits more stable towards noise?

SchrodingersCatIn this paper and this paper, the "Noise Stability of Qubits" (the stability of qubits to external noise) has been discussed. In the first one, Gil Kalai states that it is difficult to create a quantum computer since the noise produced in creating a few qubits is enough to reach the threshold for...

Although this has been closed, if the OP edits it to make it a bit more focused, it can be re-opened

If anyone is willing to guide the OP, please do so

Also, there's no Meta post yet, about how to deal with list-type questions. I'd request anyone who is free, to write one and post it

The answers to the following very important question are more speculations than mathematical theorems, which I am expecting to see.

Q: Can a Turing machine simulate a quantum computer?

RikerI know that a Turing machine1 can theoretically simulate "anything", but I don't know whether it could simulate something as fundamentally different as a quantum-based computer. Are there any attempts to do this, or has anybody proved it possible/not possible? I've googled around, but I'm not a...

@nbro You can start a bounty if you want to draw more attention to that question.

@Blue That question has already a lot of attention (in fact, it's the most upvoted question so far), but the number of qualified people (including me) visiting this website (to answer such an important question and others) really seems reduced.

Anonymous
@nbro That is true. But I don't see anything else to do about it, at the moment.

You don't see, but I saw, i.e. to share my opinions above about what I think is a problem.
It's not much so far, but it's a start

Anonymous
@nbro How do you want me to share?

Anyway, a bounty is definitely the best option in this case. There are a few highly qualified people on this site, who might be interested in answering the question if they notice a bounty. Incentivizing is always a good strategy.

6:51 PM
@nbro This is what happens when you start a beta at half-filled commitment stage I suppose

7:04 PM
Just wondering, as a student, is my question quantumcomputing.stackexchange.com/questions/53/… not a good question for this site? I would like to understand why someone down voted so I could possibly improve my question.

Anonymous
@DanielBurkhart Your question is absolutely fine from my perspective. No idea why someone would downvote it

Anonymous
You could ask that in a comment on the main post

@blue yeah, I was worried it may not be clear because I haven't gotten an answer.

Anonymous
@DanielBurkhart Your question seems to demand expert-level knowledge, which perhaps majority of the answerers on this site don't have

Anonymous
If you need an urgent answer consider putting a bounty

Anonymous
7:10 PM
Even then, I can't guarantee that someone will be able to answer it

Anonymous
Once the site goes public, hopefully we will have more experts around.

@Blue yeah, I may put a bounty on it. The thought crossed my mind.

Nat
@DanielBurkhart What do you mean by "variables" in the context of that question? For example, are you asking about the physical specifications of the computer, or the variable types of the code it'd run, etc.?
Also, you use the term "genetic structure"; did you mean "generic structure"?

7:29 PM
Ask a question about this, go on - you know you want to :P

Anonymous
@Mithrandir24601 In fact I'm in the process of framing a question on that. I'll post tomorrow morning ;)

@Nat By variables, I am referring to what inputs makes up the generic structure. I wasn't sure when I wrote the question if that was the proper term. I was trying to figure out why certain inputs in a generic structure enable the blind cluster state to reveal nothing about the computation to the BQC protocol.

Also, I'm thinking about beginning to write up a tag description for and maybe some others, so is there anything in particular that people think should be included? ('noise' is a broad area, so there's only so much of it to include)

Anonymous
@Mithrandir24601 That would be great!

@Blue But if you post tonight, it'll give me another question I could potentially answer tonight! :P

Anonymous
7:33 PM
As for what should be included, maybe you can just summarize the answer you wrote to my question today morning

Q: What exactly is meant by "noise" in the following context?

BlueThe strengthened version of the Church-Turing thesis states that: Any algorithmic process can be simulated efficiently using a Turing machine. Now, on page 5 (chapter 1), the book Quantum Computation and Quantum Information: 10th Anniversary Edition By Michael A. Nielsen, Isaac L. Chuang goes o...

Also Nat's answer

@nat I did in-fact mean generic structures, thats a typo on my part.

Anonymous
@Mithrandir24601 I'll try after completing writing this damned lab report for my electron device class which has to be submitted tomorrow

Anonymous
:)

@Blue Ah. Lab reports... Fun times...

Lab reports: writing or grading them, you're still going to be miserable

Unless you have a deviant sense of "fun" ;)

Q: What should we call our chat room?

PavelWe, like all other sites, have a chat room. However, currently it has the rather boring name of "Quantum Computing". Most other sites have a room with a more intresting name: The Nineteenth Byte for Code Golf, The Sphinx's Lair for Puzzling, The Bridge for Arqade, etc. What are your suggestions...

8:45 PM
quantumcomputing.meta.stackexchange.com/q/32/82 just updated that post by adding a reference to the Physics.SE meta post that requested that feature.

Are the quotes in this answer rendering as code blocks for anyone else? Looks like there may be a bug.

They're rendering as code blocks, because they are code blocks, to show the markdown used

Nat
Pfttt, silly me. xD I saw the quote blocks with the same background as the code blocks and assumed that they were all code blocks.

@Mithrandir24601 Multiple answers can be good! Even if there's already a good, accepted answer, FAQ-like questions can still benefit from getting more good answers expressed in other ways.
Actually, should that one be a FAQ-question? It's not really a common concept, but it's still a very common intro-level question. Kinda borderline?

@Nat Yeah, but the only thing I could add is about why superconducting photon detectors are better than semiconducting ones (and only at a basic level)
@Nat I don't think so - the faq questions so far seem more basic

11:59 PM
Should we have a feed enabled in here again? Personally, I'd like both meta and main feeds, but I think at least a meta feed is important...
