To that comment, @jokerdino @Mahesh @jrg all my friends know about you through the newsletter
Mahesh.. not too much
@Mahesh Go Go! Become an ubuntu member

2 hours later…

@AmithKK what comment were you referring to?

@Mahesh The "Everone of my friends know you thing"

Why are nominations ordered newest first? This should be random.

They are random for the next two phases.
Which matters more than the nomination phase.

okay :)

Are you good with Sql?

11:00 AM
@jokerdino asking me? not good, but yeah, had classes and I'm a MySQL admin sometimes.

I think that might be enough. I need a good fella to help me with data queries.

2 hours later…
12:59 PM
@jokerdino Sup? :P

1 hour later…
2:22 PM
@AmithKK Haha, let me know when you come around then ;)
What just happened?
Hi @Shog9

'morning

Don't you love the controversy around the Stack Exchange star?
namely, Mr Carroll.

2:38 PM
ah, drama

Does it qualify as melodrama yet?

@ger
err
@gertvdijk not nominated? hmm any reason why? you are a good candidate, I think

@Private Thanks for that. But no, I am starting on my graduation project this monday. And moreover, I prefer answering questions too. I'm only a janitor when I feel bored. When I would be a mod I would not have time to answer questions anymore I think. Not my ambition. And I'm just here for a few months.

@gertvdijk aah graduate project.. on what topic if I might asked?
@gertvdijk you can run for moderator next year too I guess...
-ed

@Manishearth Didn't that comment drip sarcasm enough? :P

2:47 PM
@Private designing+developing secure web based file transfer application, at an IT security company. it's partly research and partly just being an intern.

@FEichinger which one ?

@Private If I would have found AU a year earlier I would have nominated myself for last year elections probably. :) Not sure about next year... life will change I guess after I will not be a student anymore.

I thought "magically" gave it away. :P I'm just playing along.

@gertvdijk I guess, make sure to look at the nominations the hour before they close, though. I mean if you are not able to pick three qualified mods, then maybe, just maybe you might reconsider

2:56 PM
@Mahesh Yep.

man.. his meta participation..
ahem.. ahem..
I've stumbled across masterpieces.
How's it going Evan? I haven't had a chance to down vote you in a while! — Chacha102 May 26 '10 at 15:25

3:13 PM
man, this oneis a bigger troll than I had the courage to suspect.

@Mahesh LOL
@Mahesh He has lower meta participation then me (srsly)

@smartboyhw: he stands for every single election he can

@JourneymanGeek I knew

on the hope he wins one so he can carry on some crazy ass vendetta against Atwood

3:15 PM
@JourneymanGeek Nice
Just one thing: DON'T VOTE FOR @EvanCarroll

lol
he'll likely get disqualified
one 'nice' thing with the AU election rules

Is that he needs to sign the Ubuntu CoC:P

yup
which he clearly refuses to

@JourneymanGeek who do you think you will vote for?

lol
not me? ;p

3:22 PM
@JourneymanGeek You cannot include yourself

Joker probably
other two, I donno, haven't decided yet

And for truth's sake, I won't vote for you
I would vote for @jokerdino, @AmithKK and @RolandiXor

yeah, that's expected

@fossfreedom how many votes can one actually vote?

I know its a little disingenious, but I don't expect to win
3

3:24 PM
@JourneymanGeek The problem is, you don't have much rep in here, and your helpful flags doesn't help

nope
I'm just curious how many votes I'll get, to be honest ;p

@JourneymanGeek LOL

and even If i don't it increases my visibility on site for the next election

@JourneymanGeek Good one

(which also ties back in to 'not having much rep on AU')

3:26 PM
Jeff Atwood on December 02, 2010

Back in July, we appointed Moderators Pro Tempore for the nascent Stack Exchange 2.0 communities. Leadership is critical to any community’s success, and the bootstrapping of a community often requires those leaders to be appointed before the community is large enough or organized enough to elect them itself.

Our fellow moderators Pro Tempore have been instrumental in keeping their communities tidy and on track through the public beta and beyond. Now that the earliest Stack Exchange 2.0 sites have been fully public for over 60 days, we believe at least some of the communities are ready to  …

@FEichinger Yeah

I'm very interested in just how many people are gonna support me in the primaries, but have other votes in the actual elections.
Cause I assume there's gonna be a large drop between the two.

or a rise
and at least 4 people will get eleminated

3:31 PM
@JourneymanGeek Yep

@JourneymanGeek That would be hilarious.

@JourneymanGeek actually 5

@smartboyhw Well, four + Evan. :P

EC dosen't count

@JourneymanGeek I know
Which 4 then?

3:32 PM
The 4 with the least votes in the primaries.

maybe me, who knows

I mean guessing it now
@JaredBurrows, @JourneymanGeek (sorry), @FEichinger (sorry) and @green7

That is my prediction of the KO list

its plausible
Kartik might?

3:34 PM
I'm not gonna talk about it, but, I do have a list.

@FEichinger OK list it out.....

zero flags

We don't care about it

I just said I'm not gonna talk about it. :P

@JourneymanGeek you even have less flags than me:P

3:35 PM
funny thing is no one's really asked me about flags and meta participation >_>
@smartboyhw: There's less things I can flag here ;p

@JourneymanGeek good I will now copy @fossfreedom 's typical sentence as a comment

@JourneymanGeek done

already been asked ;p

green7, Gui, karthick87, JaredBurrows, JourneymanGeek, snow, and myself are all pretty close to the edge

3:38 PM
@JourneymanGeek No listen they didn't ask for why you wanna become a mod
@FEichinger ok

I'm unsure which ones are gonna bite the bullet, but it's probably pretty close.

I think @snow won't be eliminated
hey @MarcoCeppi

It largely depends on what criteria people will apply when voting.

@FEichinger Yep
Let's see how it goes

answered ;p

3:49 PM
@smartboyhw what? Or was that just a Hi, in which case, Hi.

@MarcoCeppi Can't I say hello?

yeah, sorry I realized that about two seconds too late

@MarcoCeppi lol

hey @MarcoCeppi

WHAT?! @FEichinger

3:50 PM
♥

rage quit
4

lol

I still see your gravatar up there @MarcoCeppi :P
okay. Why do I feel like we need more nominations? :|

I meant kittens.

We have an acceptable size nomination pool
14 candidates is pretty good
Previous election was only 10 and before that was just 7

3:54 PM
XD @smartboyhw aww, I'd rather let the voters tell me I'm not worthy of being a mod ;p

appears

@MarcoCeppi the site is growing, boss.

@MarcoCeppi cuz htorque quit in the 2nd one :P
@MarcoCeppi Anyone above 150 rep can vote right?

@AmithKK Do you have the number?

I think 20% of the total vote should be enough to get you through.

So, 4,210 people are eligible to vote
2

10% will vote. So, out of 420 votes, try to hit at least 80 votes.

Wow, that's a steep number. cringes

4:03 PM
I think the api no is higher

Just discovered the link to see all candidates and I was under Evan Carroll, which I was amazed to see it had 383 score here but then I saw a link to this places
-41
Q: Why is the establishment allowed to stifle my ability to campaign?

Evan CarrollIn this question, the following verbiage was repeatedly removed -- this inhibited my ability to answer the question. We all know Evan Carroll isn't yet a moderator on English.StackOverflow, but he ought to be and he'll win the election if enough people vote for Evan Carroll next week! I'd l...

Confirmed. 4210 people can vote
Hey maybe we should see how many people can nominate

@smartboyhw: also, don't forget the network effect. SU chat folks are likely to vote for me or joker. People on SF may vote for me as well.
@smartboyhw: if we hit 30, and all have more rep than EC... ;p

@JourneymanGeek But I think in the end you won't get moderatorship, and @jokerdino has more possiblities

Huh? apart from going to nomination to many sites, he/she has very low score. I really do not trust someone like that, my question is, when a moderator goes rogue, is there a way to protect the site?

4:09 PM
well, no

@smartboyhw erm, isn't that kinda rude to say such things?

@smartboyhw Dude, why are you dragging me into politics?

1991 people can nominate themselves

@jokerdino: bah, you're the only one I'm sure of voting for ;p

4:10 PM
For example someone going for moderator on many sites with little score sounds to me that they want to sabotage a lot of sites.

Only politicians throw stuff over each other.

@JourneymanGeek :P but thanks.

@LuisAlvarado yes. SE team can jump in and kick the diamond

I'm voting for @jokerdino and @undecided

4:11 PM
@AmithKK You have three votes

You can vote for yourself too

@Mahesh thanks buddy, and what about reversing any damage done by that moderator, can they also do that?

@LuisAlvarado Hard but yes

@AmithKK OK

Am voting for Roland, Jokerdino and Obsessive

4:12 PM
@LuisAlvarado No idea. They should be able to...

@AmithKK: yeah, you can

I LIKE POLICTICS

@LuisAlvarado: eh, EC got banned on SF
actually for a very long time

@LuisAlvarado sure you can vote for yourself.

who's ec?

4:13 PM
election commission

dont want to vote for myself ill leave that to the other voters

also, Jeff Atwood called him to make sure he's for real
2

@smartboyhw that doesn't mean you can start wars here.
3

oh, the guy who stands for every election on every site ;p

ill vote for the others I have seen active and helpful, which is tough since this time there are more than 3 that have done that

4:13 PM
@Mahesh: he's entitled to his views, I guess ;p

I'm not

for example right here is you (jokerdino) and Amith

@LuisAlvarado hm, not sure how i should respond.

I better keep my mouth shut here :P

@JourneymanGeek yeah, but there are these unspoken rules that really bind the community.

4:15 PM
say "Hey great, am counting on your vote!" then I wave a flag of jokerdino and say hurrah!!

@jokerdino: let me put it this way. If you hadn't stood, everyone would be bothering you for the next year ;p
@Mahesh: yeah, there's that, but my responses to this are limited to throwing a hissy fit, and being the bigger man, so I'm trying the latter ;p

:)

@LuisAlvarado haha
@JourneymanGeek heh

besides, I'll be around more now that I got a kubuntu install up again anyhow. There's always the next election should I lose, yes? ;p

yep

4:17 PM
Yeah, I know my chances of winning are pretty low.
:D

the last one i jumped in was a trial.
@green7 thanks for nominating yourself though. that shows you are selfless.

@JourneymanGeek you know a competitor beforehand.
/me

it doesn't matter whether you win or not. what matters is you tried.

@green7 Nominating yourself is good enough :P

Yeah, who knows.

4:19 PM
I think smartboyhw is just a tad too excited.

@Mahesh: and I have more time to refine things, get more visibility, work out what's my power base, mobilise folk ect ;p

more than some of the nominees themselves o.O

I didn't see Rebecca Chernoff here in the recent past.

@jokerdino: he nominated himself at some point

@jokerdino He is a nominee

4:20 PM
he was, i think he withdrew.

Elections, Its a time when everyone tries to make a reasonable guess on who would make a better mod. Past contributions, enthusiasm, community contact, etc are the factors that inevitably affect the process. Lets just hope the community makes a good guess this time, as it always did. :)
2

@Mahesh That's beautiful :P

@Mahesh it's also a good time to get the pundit badge.

4:23 PM
keep all the conversation clean guys - lets not be too personal with comments about our fellow nominees.
6

I can only say this election will be very closely fought.
@fossfreedom you taught me diplomacy, boss.

@jokerdino: and hopefully cleanly fought. Also, You guys have relatively few joke candidates

@Mahesh Don't feed the trolls
Everyone: Don't feed the trolls
2

remember the one on SU who wanted to be voted cause 'I'm cute' ?

@JourneymanGeek Yeah that was funny

4:24 PM
@JourneymanGeek oh tha one.

@MarcoCeppi yup that. I'll keep stay low.

most of the candiates have SOME kind of platform

@JourneymanGeek platform

also guys, you may want to adjust your nominations to link to your launchpad pages

Blast from the past: First moderator "election"
2

4:26 PM
mine does, slightly sneakily, and its in the rules
I noticed not everyone does
(hint hint nudge nudge)

@JourneymanGeek If it's in your profile, you're okay, at least I would think so.

what if i want to remain anon? :D

@jokerdino You can be anon, just not anon mod :P

Noo~

Go home /b :P~

4:28 PM
Guys I am sad to say that I will only be using Ubuntu until it gets to the Aahing Aardvark version

@MarcoCeppi: if you say so ;p

@MarcoCeppi you need to shave every other day :P
i dont like that little beard hair flying.

done

/jk

I guess it dosen't say where it needs to be linked, but eh, I like playing it safe ;p

Q: What can be done for rogue moderators (Moderators that go bad)

Luis AlvaradoI have read the question about What is the process of removing a moderator from office if he/she goes rogue? but here I want to know what actions would be done after a moderator is known to be rogue. For example, apart form removing he/she from moderator status can it also: Reverse any damage m...

@AmithKK you beat me by about 30 days
the most I had was something starting in the 500

BBT
Good Night

until work got me

4:31 PM
nights

take care buddy

@MarcoCeppi Are you still working on that online version of Risk?

@jokerdino no, not anymore. I've considered starting it again but I'm busy with $other_things

Ah, could be good news to me though.
As in, i wont want to get hooked to that game.
@sat hi?

sup dawgs

4:38 PM
@Sathya o/

why are you not running again? ;)

@Sathya we blame you for you-know-who's nomination. :P

that's a dialog I haven't heard in a while

(okay, the joke might've got stale, but it still makes me giggle whenever I think of it)

well, EC is off the list again.

4:40 PM
@jokerdino and make a dash for the triple-diamon eh

@Sathya why yes, why not?
I think Yanniz and Michael Mrozek has three ♦.

yeah, why not?

I think Ivo's the only triple diamon?

wait.. three diamonds? can I have one of those?

Wait, Ivo has 3?!?!
what was after SU and the fitness?

4:43 PM
SU, Fitness, Meta Stack Overflow
there's Alenanno too
and not to forget ChrisF & Gilles

ah, MSO, I barely keep that in mind.
@Sathya Programmers, webapps and ---

ok, looks like we have quite a couple of SE super stars mods.

As for me, Super User & Web Applications takes a lot out of me. Work's increased as well. Some personal commitment's going to come up soon
won't be able to help Ask Ubuntu

"Sorry dear. I can't take you out today. I need to clear the flag queue."

4:46 PM
lol

@Sathya you can still chip in ;)

na, I'll pass for now

heh, also I think we have considerable number of mod nominees from GMT +5.30 this time.
at last count, 5.

how many now? need to check

5 and then you add Journeyman

4:49 PM
@MarcoCeppi @Oli - Hi guys, I was wondering a thing that I just got reminded again right now. Sometimes users here have some weird difficult problems and are never solved or are not solved quickly by some answers, so they go to chat (Or write to my email address) and I work with them to solve the problems. Some of this times I do it via chat, others with Remote connection to actually see the problem.
@MarcoCeppi @Oli - Just as an idea or maybe something for discussion, a chat room where, whoever has time, can offer their help to solve particular problems in the manner I mentioned above. Something more, i don't know how to say, direct?. For example I have helped 3 users with Intel and Nvidia problems that were literally out of control via the remote desktop or chat. Others had simple printer problems. But maybe a way to enhance askubuntu in a new level of help seeking.

you mean specialized help depending on the issue?

lot of good candidates, don't think me pitching in will help much :)
2

@jokerdino - Yeah, haven't you had a question that you knew you could help with but:
1. The OP did not make the question very clear or does not know how to make it clearer
2. The question involves a lot of details that you need to know to solve but the OP has little experience
3. You could help but if doing it via AU it would involve 100 comments to get the details

I did, once.

Here is where a chat room, a way to get direct contact with the user for specific problems and other alternatives come to help. For example, let's say you specialize in Nvidia and Service installation problems. Then those that can not find the answer here can look you up.

4:54 PM
I helped them in the chat room.

@jokerdino yeah am guessing you did since EVERYONE knows you hehe

@smartboy @journey you can vote for yourself. The voting is via Meek STV, and you get 3 choices(ordered)

every time I go into a chat it's "Where's jokerdino.. am not saying good morning if jokerdino is not present"
3

haha, the problem with chat room is not everyone is around everytime.

once I created a chat room and ...What that hell.. you were already in it

4:56 PM
@LuisAlvarado o.O
i am probably the least online guy.
at least in the last four months.

@jokerdino that's true but this also applies to Q/A, so this method would only add to the amount of help somebody can get.
@jokerdino maybe it's the dinosaur then, it has a long term remembering effect

@LuisAlvarado IME that kind of thing doesn't scale very well & alludes more towards help vampires & takes the focus away from the site.

i call them the help vamps. :P

@LuisAlvarado what about apes then?

@Sathya that is also true... so true. But I also thought that some rules could be made to first, make the user search AU for the answer or similar ones, if not then he/she could then could rely on any participant of this feature am talking about. But also, like jokerdino mentioned, they would have to wait for one of us to connect or to answer via email.
@Mahesh - Apes would go apes with the dinosaur

Oli
5:01 PM
@LuisAlvarado I would echo what @Sathya said. It's useful for one person if you help them in a chat session. If they post a question and you answer it and it's a common issue, that can help a lot of people.

Well anyway it's just an idea I had about it. What I like about it is the people you meet from various parts of the world.

Well, I know who to meet if I visit Venezuela.

@Oli correct. ok.
Remember, free food and place to stay hehe

hehe

and of course the about 5 tours of really pretty girls

5:02 PM
I happen to know a couple of personal facts about a couple of people in the site.
@LuisAlvarado O.O

are we back at 14 candidates again? really... is he expelled again?

@gertvdijk He didn't want to sign the code of conduct. surefire enough

what like Oli has this cool site, is a mod here and does so many things, one thinks how the crap does he have time for himself?

he has a g/f too, last time i heard.

Don't get why he would not sign it
I mean the CoC mentions stuff an Ubuntu user would actually do with or without signing, assuming he/she actually likes Ubuntu
btw
who are we talking about ^^

5:05 PM
err, Evan C.

I'm off to dinner. BBL

Heh, Anna missed the joke.

so how do I sign this CoC thingy?

5:08 PM
@Mahesh cya
@Sathya You need a launchpad account and a GPG key.

former, yes - latter no.

and other hoopla that is not really straightforward.

ah well, screw it then

14
Q: How do I sign the Ubuntu Code of Conduct?

Marco CeppiIn order to submit patches and items to certain projects it says I need to Sign the Code of Conduct. How do I do this?

It's a PGP key, my bad. That should make the process slightly faster.

will moderators stay moderators indefinitely on SE?

5:14 PM
they dont have a term.

Oli
@gertvdijk It's until we're kicked out or we resign.

@Oli okay. good to know. can't find a clear statement on that.
by the way: are elections yearly only on AU? on UL I saw they haven't had any elections after the first and only one in 2011.

it is on need-basis

and on SO it's like twice a year
ok. so who decides to start a new election? number of moderator actions? or time-based per site?

i think if the site grows too much, we have elections
possibly decided by the SE team

5:21 PM
ok. well, if there's more formal statement about it I'd like to hear about it. seems rather strange this is based on the randomness of people.

well, the details are usually vague.
the SO elections are actually supposed to be held annually but the mods wanted more help. so, they held an interim election.
in the case of U&L, the mods were able to sufficiently handle the flags. so, no elections were held.

ok

IIRC, each site goes through an audit by SE team and is then determined whether or not a new election to be held.

5:34 PM
@jokerdino you know that for a while (Pardon my geeky ignorance), I thought IIRC was something like Internet IRC, or when googling it I found "International Integrated Reporting Council" so I thought, DUDE this guy is talking some serious !@#!

ROTFL
This might have already been mentioned, idk
but
Evan Carroll is gone again.

it was mentioned above

@Sathya link?
I'd like to read the convo.

45 mins ago, by gertvdijk
are we back at 14 candidates again? really... is he expelled again?

Thanks ;)
@Sathya BTW I like your blog.

5:49 PM
@Seth welcome :) which blog :P

This one ;) Do you have more than one?
Just looked at your profile.

@Seth ah that :)
@Seth yeah, a few more ;p
@Seth btw, it was just started by me - few contributors there. Feel free to submit

@Sathya A friend and I submitted a few yesterday :P

@Seth ah, right - have queued it

ah, thanks :)

5:59 PM
Argh! There's no way with the quality of candidates applying that I'll be able to narrow down my choices to 3 :(
