@J.Musser Hi there. Hi THelper (I know, a bit of a delayed response)

5 hours later…
3:30 PM
@EnergyNumbers Slow room.

3:44 PM
@J.Musser it is at the moment, but quite a few of us pass through at some time. Happily the ping system, and chat's asynchronous setup, means that it works ok. I'd like it to be busier, and I do try to drop by frequently enough.

4:00 PM
@EnergyNumbers Well this isn't the fasted site either...
I am in 10 chatrooms right now for some reason...

4:27 PM
@J.Musser It's true - we're still building the community. We have got a good body of questions so far, and the numbers of page-views and new visitors is trending upwards, so I'm optimistic.

4:54 PM
@EnergyNumbers The graph is quite decently stable.
At least compared with GL:

We've got a meta question that captures some of the stats:

Q: Site statistics

EnergyNumbersFollowing on from the great work of F'x over on Academia.SE, this meta post will track our stats on Area 51, fortnightly (previously weekly) or a bit longer if I forget and someone else updates it: That's the Quantcast estimate of site traffic, with the mean number of visitors per month, a spa...

There are a few statistics that would be more useful. Are you an SEDE wizard? I'd be interested in seeing number of users active on meta per week, number of users with rep over 200 active on main site per week - is that the sort of thing SEDE can do? Active would mean - posted, commented, flagged or voted.
@J.Musser ^^^

@EnergyNumbers I saw that - voted a while ago.
@EnergyNumbers I can only do copy/paste on sede. Sorry :/

@J.Musser No worries. I might ask on the mother meta some time.

@EnergyNumbers It looks like you guys' q/day is suffering. .3/day.
Think a topic challenge would be useful?

We'll always welcome new questions, whether that was .3/day or 300/day. The difficulty at the moment is that we don't have one place where a lot of contributors gather, so although we could announce a topic challenge, I'm not sure we could get it to the attention of enough people. Perhaps if it overlapped strongly enough with another site that had a busy chat room, we might get some traffic that way.
But we'd have to be very careful to avoid spamming - we want to be good neighbours.

5:08 PM
@EnergyNumbers As it would be featured, it will be on the sidebar.

@J.Musser Any ideas for a challenge topic?

Q: How do weekly topic challenges work?

Jon EricsonA handful of sites have conducted a variation of the "weekly topic challenge" idea. I, myself, have become quite fond of them since they do seem to be effective at increasing asking rate and can be a lot of fun. I've personally initiated challenges on several sites (most recently on History and P...

^that.
It's what I did on GL here, and it got 101 views so far.
Just finished our first week, and we got 6 questions from it, I think.

@J.Musser Nice. Please do post a version of that on sustainability meta too, and I'll mark it featured

@EnergyNumbers Ok will do. And should it be a two-week challenge, just so it gets more attention on the site (might make it more successful)?

@J.Musser Yes, that sounds like a good idea

5:40 PM
@EnergyNumbers Here are the GL results:

A: Weekly topic challenge: terminology [completed]

J. MusserDuring the week that the challenge ran, we received 6 questions tagged terminology: What is apical dominance? What's the difference between annual, biennial, and perennial plants? What's the difference between corms, bulbs, and tubers? What is the term for this pruning technique that causes stu...

Q: Sustainable Living: Weekly Topic Challenge

J. MusserJon Ericson has come up with a wonderful way to boost the amount of questions on the site, and promote activity in topics that may otherwise receive only minimal attention. And it will be a lot of fun. Here's how it works: Suggest topics in the answers below. Next monday, I (or a volunteer) wil...

Q: Sustainable Living: Biweekly Topic Challenge

Because of my activity level on GL, I may now and then find I can't keep up, and in that case I'll post here in chat, to find some volunteer(s) to keep it going.

9:32 PM
@J.Musser Thanks for kicking this off - that's brilliant

@EnergyNumbers yup, np.
