Hi :D

Quick question: I want to interrupt a sentence in this manner: X - Even if it applied to Y - couldn't be used here. should I use dashes or commas here? Maybe should I just bracket it? X (even if it applied to Y) couldn't be used here.

Normally i did well today

8:21 AM
I would use commas.

@Mateon1 Some young people, obviously.
Hello, @infinitesimal, @Mateon1!
I agree, commas would be better.

Hello, @DamkerngT.

Q: Pretentious writing tag

Tyler James YoungWhy do we have this tag? Should we delete it? I can’t think of a constructive use of it. I vote for removal.

An interesting discussion over there!
One reader's "pretentious" is another reader's "ornate" and yet another's "poetic". How about bare "literary"? That marks a distinct 'dialect' without prejudging the author's motivations, which can be left to individual answerers. — StoneyB 11 hours ago
Indeed! What's pretentious writing anyway? Sophisticated writing that fails?

Interesting...

A: "But that I knew these places are my own" - meaning?

Ben KovitzI was wondering if "knew these places are my own" was a transcription error for "know these places are my own", so I did some googling. Indeed I found "know" in a few versions, including one in a chapter called "Breaking into Song" by John Hollander, in a book titled Lyric Poetry: Beyond New Crit...

But I dursn't tag any text posted by an asker "pretentious", that would be bad. I think we must ditch this tag.

Q: Learn English I'm newbie

abdelaziz marocHi the world I'm newbie in English cano someone help me ?? like talk with me on English or something like that on Skype or Facebook !

Everyone seems to believe that they have to talk with native speakers to learn a new language naturally.

That is actually a good idea, but till some certain extent a learner can learn without interacting with natives. That is what I think :-)

@Hanaa how is your exam going?

And good evening all!

Q: "Has taken" or "takes"? "Are feeling" or "feel"?

jihoon People whose health (has taken / takes) a turn to for the worse should not drink. Personally I think it is more suitable to use 'has taken' because this means that the people are ill or unhealthy now, so they need to go to the doctor and get medicine, not to drink. However if I used 'takes...

sorry this question

@Man_From_India This is a very interesting question, I upvoted it before going for a walk, and will now read the answer(s).

A native speaker already said what is correct, but still I can't think it that way

3:34 PM
I'll go and fetch me some tea, and read what the folks wrote there. (0:

Q: What is this stuffed pastry called in English?

SF.I'm currently making these: It's a puff pastry stuffed with meat, mushrooms and spices, a roll cut into such small pieces. I wanted to brag about these on a forum except I realized I have no clue what they are called in English.

It's an old question, and I haven't read it in detail, but it makes me hungry!

Me too pal :-)

Hehe! Hi!

How are you my friend?

A bit busy. :D
How are you?

Fine thanks.
