This tuning method makes it possible to play the near-equivalent of A-barre and E-barre chords, in major, minor, and seventh forms (among others), while requiring far less dexterity, and with far less stress on the fingers.
An E-barre chord in conventional tuning would be E-B-e-g#-b-e', the equivalent here is E-e-g#-b-e (losing the fifth). While an A-barre chord in conventional tuning would be A-e-a-c#'-e', the equivalent here is A-E-e-a-c#'-e'. Not perfect voicings, but better-sounding than four-string chords.
