Q: Should we allow software questions? (take 3)

tpg2114So it was alluded to in Should we allow software questions? (take 2) that software recommendation questions are generally off-topic but as pointed out by @dmckee on hydrodynamics codes for nuclear rocket modelling there is no clear policy regarding whether recommendations for physics-based softwa...

Q: Why are these questions linked to each other?

Chris WhiteVery minor thing here. These two questions How can a black hole produce sound? Why does a window at night become a mirror? reference each other under the "linked" sidebar. I thought that was curious, since they have nothing to do with one another. I searched both questions, and yet I could no...

3:03 AM
@chriswhite LOL Once, the Dosa's son was a student here. Naturally, he was called "idli" :p

3:23 AM
@Manishearth Naming with south Indian dishes..? - Cool :P

3:50 AM
Well, an idli is like a dosa (pretty much same batter), but smaller and fatter, right? :p

Yeah....
We're fond of teasing our own stuff :-)
@Manishearth The mix used for both dish are the same

Not...exactly

huh..?
Well, the rice mix when created on the first day - is used for Idlies
After leaving the mixture to sour (after some 1 or 2 days), it is very good enough for dosa :-)

Sliightly diff proportions , feementation timing, batter consistency
Also, you can make ok-ish dosas from idli batter, but not vice versa

4:31 AM
Yes... absolutely :-)
You're good in these southern foods. Eh..?

5:16 AM
@CrazyBuddy nah, just curious when my mom makes 'em

Oh... I see - Same here :-)
A slightly different situation - I do it :-)

Q: Is a thought-experiment tag appropriate?

tpg2114Since thought-experiments are so common in physics, is thought-experiment something we should create?

1 hour later…
7:44 AM
I think - asking simulation or software requests (especially like this one) is highly off-topic....
I (along with 2 other people) was thinking about designing some automated quadrotor- like aircraft
I'm very bad in these modelling things.

8:44 AM
So, Are there any simulation supportive software which allow to design more or less, an aircraft - taking dimensions, and other parameters as input, etc..., etc...
Are there any as such?

2 hours later…
11:12 AM
@crazy I dunno, but remind me tomorrow. I'll ask the folks in my robotics group about it (it's the same group that developed+built the actual quadrotor used in 3 Idiots, so the seniors who were there at the time ought to know about it)

@Manishearth But well - That prototype was unable to do something which I think..
I try something different - similar to automated one (I take ECE students for my support)
I require something that helps for my modelling and simulation
I thought you'd definitely reply Manish... Thanks :-)

I know, but at least you can model the mechanical working first. An automated one is infinitely harder, though... It needs to be able to do image processing, so you'll need to have a very good processor on board. Or just communicate with a laptop via a ZigBee and let the laptop do all the processing (this will be laggy, though)

@Manishearth Yes... Indeed. I don't have so much experience in the field. I thought Internet would be of help :-)
for knowing some intro to that...

Actually some seniors in our lab are trying to make an automated flying bot (not a quadrotor though, they wanna try something new)
So i can ask them
You may also wanna try the Robotics chat

@Manishearth A similar thing... But - I've thought of using obstacle detection and following towards the radio source,something more complex - for which I require help from a lot guys
I'll start modeling it this year... Next year, there would be a lot of questions here & in robotics by me :-)

11:23 AM
For this, youll need a lot of help, though. A few people specializing in electronics, two programmers, at least one of whom is good at image processing, two who are good at areo, and some mech guys. Note that I'm not talking about their departments, I'm talking about what they are good at.
(though if you take a sincere thirdie/fourthie who has done some core internship, that is pretty good as well when it comes to specialization in a field)

@Manishearth I know...
I've collected guys from ECE, Aero and IT (2 in ECE and 1 from other two)

@crazy what year?

all of 'em - first year

Freshies/sophies will be useless for this :/

I'm somewhat afraid to meet those seniors...

11:26 AM
Unless they have prior experience

Ragging & Teasing man...

Since in your first year you generally have common courses and in your second year still basic stuff

I really bet that our seniors would help...

Seriously, ask your robotics club or innovation group for advice here
There probably are other like minded seniors who would love to work on this, but you don't know them
Like I said, just freshies (regardless of their stream, it doesn't matter at this stage) will make it very hard for you to progress
Because you won't have even a rough idea of what is to be done
While you all may have enthusiasm, you guys need experience as well.. So find some guys with experience and add them to your team! :)
I speak from my own experience... Some of the stuff I've done in robotics wouldn't have gone too well if I hadn't had the guidance and experience of my seniors..

@Manishearth So, I thought of entering into the modelling thing... I thought it would be easy than others

11:33 AM
?
Static models:easy. I do it all the time.

Modelling, Design and Prototype
These are the steps - Isn't it?

Dynamic models: very hard. I have made only simple ones :s
@crazy not necessarily.

I think I'll have to find a nice guy... I'll tell you when I meet "the guy" who's more than enough for doing this...

Here, it is modular. You need to run things in parallel--programming, electricals, and bot

Robotics..! - These guys are intelligent

11:37 AM
Regarding the bot, you need to first discuss various components and the overall aerodynamics. Then yes, do the normal MDP process. But you need to get the electronics and programming done in parallel (more or less)
Btw, this rather long convo is a bit off topic for the chat room, i'll move it to a separate room on robotics.se when im back on desktop

@Manishearth Huh..?
I thought we could talk anything in chat..!
Ok then.... C'ya Later :-)

12:00 PM
@crazy well, yeah.. But sometimes it is better to move tangential discussion that nobody else will be interested in elsewhere :)

12:50 PM
@Manishearth nah, I think it's fine here. Our chat room isn't busy enough to have to sort discussions.

1:07 PM
@Manishearth If its like that, then No one would be interested in our chit-chat too (idly-dosas) :P

1 hour later…
2:14 PM
@Manishearth Hi Manish - Seems like there's something wrong with the revision history

4 hours later…
5:59 PM
The history has a bug indeed..!
When I saw that post, the last editor was QMech. I didn't remove the
To say truly, I didn't see the astrophysics tag at all...
But, the history indicates that I have removed the tag...
In the middle, an user is there. If his suggestion was rejected by Q, then he has to be in the 4th revision (which isn't)
@Manishearth Well, What do ya think?

2 hours later…
8:09 PM
@davidzaslavsky @Manishearth @qmechanic @mbq @dmckee any of you around?

@Sklivvz what's up?

Hi, can you please take a look at the flags on meta? You can grab me in a pvt room if you need to discuss, thanks.

I see. So far I have not been handling that particular issue, it's been left up to Qmechanic, Manishearth, and dmckee.

OK. Keep in mind that if someone puts more gasoline on the flames... you know who :-)

I'll try to see what the other mods' plan is about this.

Q: Please review our posts on the LHC

SklivvzWe have a lot of posts on the LCH - however, the experiments are still on-going and it's possible that some answers that were right at the time are now outdated. It's also possible that some questions are now too localised (because they are very specific to a situation and a past time) and need t...

@DavidZaslavsky thanks
should I remove the above? Honestly it's very similar, I don't really want to cause a problem

You can if you want to
Since that one doesn't say anything about contradicting answers, and is just a general call for review, it might be more tame. I'd be willing to give it a chance.

8:44 PM
Ok let's try it

8:59 PM
Any mod around?
David?
@dmckee @DavidZaslavsky could you momentarily unlock the post in meta so I can accept QMechanic's answer or do you think it's not appropriate?

Q: What's wrong with this Meta answer?

Ron MaimonI gave an answer to a question of Sklivvz, which attempted to explain the monopole answer before: This answer was deleted by David Zaslavsky, for some reason. It's annoying, because I tried to explain the detailed reason for the answer I gave, why it's not in the literature, and how to deal with...

@davidzaslavsky @Manishearth @qmechanic @mbq @dmckee should ron paste the answer body in another post? We had to edit all his questions on our meta because he kept on doing that.

10:09 PM
@DavidZaslavsky why is Ron's nice meta answer giving the physics explanations why he thinks about the magnetic monopoles as he (and many other theoretical physicists do) does deleted? It contained very good physics and deleting it was wrong and only potentally leads to many people being upset.
@Sklivvz, I dont see why you now go after LHC questions. There is really nothing wrong with them. The ones you listed are still relevant at present and even if their should be others which are no longer completely actual, they may still be worth reading and having them around is a godd thing. They do not hurt and no actions have to be taken.

@Dilaton I am not going after anything. Understand that, and move on.

10:54 PM
@Sklivvz the question reads again as suggesting to (rather down...?) vote, close, and even delete a whole bunch of mostly legitimate posts about a certain topic. Honestly this almost makes me vomit and wanting to leave the site (which is not that easy for me, obviously, since I once really loved Physics SE). However if the bad things I observe since about 6 weeks keep going on and are getting worse, moving on and forget about Physics SE will finally become managable :-(

I am at a loss for words...

11:07 PM
@Dilaton it was in the wrong place. Meta isn't the place for physics answers, and that question was not about physics.

@DavidZaslavsky I almost suspected something like this, as I said to Ron in a now again deleted post. Why did you not explain in a comment to Ron that it is deleted because it was in the wrong placa and that he should put it in his answer? Such a helpful comment could have been very helpful to avoid additional tension ... In fact I wanted to reread the physics again and now I cant.

@Dilaton How do you know I didn't?

@DavidZaslavsky I have read Ron's answer shortly before it was deleted. It suddenly disappeared without the sine of such a comment, which would best have been addressed at Ron. I looked for such an explaining comment why his answer was deleted, but there was none and there seems to be still none. Such a comment would have been useful for everybody who was interested in the physics, not only for Ron himself.

11:22 PM
That's not proof of anything.

@DavidZaslavsky Independent from if it was there for a short time or not, such a comment would still be useful. At present none is visible, and it could still help to release tension. And I would like it if Ron would repost the physics on his main page answer. Would you delete it if I ask Ron to extend his answer on the main page?

If Ron wants to edit his answer to the relevant question on the main site to include the physics content from his meta answer, then that will of course be fine. I've already left him a comment saying that.

Ok, I'll ask him too (on the main page) . I have to go now. About that particular issue I feel a little bit better now, thanks for the clarification.
