1:10 AM
beware of the "herd mentality"
(rendering obviously person-dependent :-)

6 hours later…
6:55 AM
@EmilioPisanty the whole Brexit issue has now become surreal. My last hope is that someone has slipped psychedelic drugs into my coffee and at some point I will wake to find it has all been a dream.

@JohnRennie We all live on the same planet. Stop caring about countries, politics and the territorial classifications that humans have set for no reason.

@NovaliumCompany humans self select into social group. You can't do anything about that as it seems to be a fundamental part of human nature. What you have to do is manage it. You have to promote the positive aspects of tribalism and suppress the negative aspects.
But what's happening is that the argument is becoming increasingly divisive so exactly the opposite is happening.
As of right now there are only two plausible options left:
1. no deal Brexit
2. revoke article 50
And I cannot see option 2 happening.

2 hours later…
9:37 AM
@NovaliumCompany do you realize how offensive that type of flippant attitude is?
@JohnRennie "and it was all a dream" isn't a plausible ending, or particularly good storytelling

@EmilioPisanty reality is proving unpalatable to me at the moment ...
2

I take it a no-confidence vote is unlikely to happen now?

The problem is that there is no agreement acceptable to a majority of MPs.
There has been a lot of fuss about the prorogueing reducing the time available for debate, but it makes no difference because debate will achieve nothing.
The EU have quite rightly said the current agreement is the best that is on offer - take it or leave it. And that agreement was rejected three times. It's not going to be accepted now.
In the absence of any agreement the only options are no deal or revoke article 50.
And I don't think there's a majority in the commons for revoking article 50.
It really doesn't matter whether Johnson remains the PM or not. Any PM who replaces Johnson will face the same situation.

@EmilioPisanty No. I realize that we're all humans and should unite under one country.

@NovaliumCompany I think Emilio's point is that this is a very complex situation that a lot of us feel very strongly about, and it's unwise to go wading in with what seem to us to be oversimplified and unhelpful statements.

9:51 AM
But I have to admit that the difference in culture, religion... has let to a pretty interesting diversity. If we all believed in one thing, had the same culture... it would be pretty boring.
@JohnRennie I have no interest in politics so I'm no one to talk to about those stuff. I just want wars and violence to be over.
I watched a movie A Prayer Before Dawn yesterday and I'm a bit depressed now :(
@JohnRennie I registered the domain anastir.com (to be a technology company) but I found out that the 9th turkish web hosting business is called alastyr.com. Will that be a problem?

@NovaliumCompany they seem different enough to me that there wouldn't be any confusion.

@JohnRennie Great! It's not a possibility they will sue me in the future right? I mean, we work in different industries (web services and product technology) and their whole website is in turkish language.

It doesn't seem likely to me that you will be sued.

@JohnRennie Alright then, thanks.
@JohnRennie How's life? :P
Finding an untaken business name is a nightmare in 2019

10:13 AM
@NovaliumCompany this is an extremely serious issue in which millions of people's livelihoods are on the line, among many other real-world consequences. "stop caring so much" is not an appropriate thing to say.
@JohnRennie that's the grimmest thing you've said thus far =|

@EmilioPisanty I jut don't see a way out.

Imagine if in the future, the planets we conquer become the countries xD
Like, Bulgaria is a planet, America is a planet...
Then we'll have star-wars type of wars

Suppose a snap general electron brought the Liberals to power. They have said they will revoke article 50, so it could happen.

@JohnRennie =/

@NovaliumCompany the issue is this apparent 52% who oppose uniting because of bendy bananas

10:17 AM
But even if it did, how are the rest of Europe going to view the UK now? It would make for a very uneasy relationship going forward.

@JohnRennie better than the alternatives

That's certainly true.

The reality is, we can sit here and talk and complain all day long, but there are other people who rule the world.

But a lib dem majority sounds like an utter pipe dream

@EmilioPisanty Agreed.

10:18 AM
@NovaliumCompany and the apparent 52% want to perpetuate that

The sad reality is that about half the population have been unmoved and would still vote to leave in any future referendum.

There will always be difference in the world and I'm pretty sure it's because God didn't want a boring world.

@NovaliumCompany "No reason"? Hardly. They may not necessarily be good reasons, but there certainly are reasons. People have been willing to die and kill for this stuff. Perhaps you need to study some history. You can't solve the problems of the human race by simply telling everyone that they should get along and be one big happy family.

On the flip side I am eligible for Irish citizenship because my father was born in Northern Ireland. I have begun to seriously contemplate this move.

@PM2Ring True.

@TaeNyFan hi :-) You asked about blogs a little while ago?

I'm reminded of the classic Monty Python skit, How To Do It

Hi!!
Yes
I was about to ask that here now
Do you have any recommendations?

@TaeNyFan what blogs do you already follow?

I guess there's a reason violence exists.
It spreads like a disease.

10:21 AM
https://profmattstrassler.com/
Currently this

So is there any way to fix this mess of a world?

I really like Matt Strassler's blog, but he seems to have stopped updating it. He only posts once a month or so these days.

Yes. I'm looking for similar blogs because I really enjoyed reading his.

I havent read all of his posts though

10:23 AM
Maybe forcefully putting chips in our brains to leash anger and violence will be a good idea.

@NovaliumCompany of course there's a way to fix this stuff long term

Bad Astronomy is a blog I read every week, though he only talks about astronomy and not any other physics.

Nice! Do you know of blogs that talk about not just Physics? I'm looking to expand my knowledge outside physics too :)
I will check these out thanks!

@bolbteppa Example?

In the pipeline is a bit of a mixture, but it's mostly about the drug industry.
Peter Woit is officially the Grinch, but he does link interesting stuff.
Symmetry magazine tends to target the non-scientist but can be interesting.

10:26 AM
This is another blog/website that I read math.ucr.edu/home/baez/FUN.html

@NovaliumCompany peace since WW2? (Note the whole 'Europe' factor in this)

@TaeNyFan John Baez is a great writer, though he kind of lost interest in physics and works in other areas niw.

@bolbteppa There are still some wars though?

Nothing like compared to the past

Quanta magazine has lots of great articles on all sorts of subjects.

10:27 AM
Yes. Tbh I don't actually follow the author's actual works but only read his posts haha

@bolbteppa That's good. Let's hope it stays that way.
I overheard that Thanos may return and start WW3 but it may be just rumors

Thanks John I will check all those out later today :)

Physics Buzz has lots of general articles.
@TaeNyFan There are lots and lots of great blogs out there :-)

Haha yes may I know how you found them? Google?

Can anyone play Boogie-Woogie on piano?

10:30 AM
@TaeNyFan you're welcome. It was a shame your question had to be closed, but it wasn't suitable for the main site. But this chat room is great for questions like this. You can ask anything here :-)

@JohnRennie "You can ask anything here" - I couldn't agree more.

Alright. I understand :)

@TaeNyFan I just stumbled across them over the years. Sometimes people recommended them to me or sometimes they were linked by other blogs.

Nice. I was having trouble googling good blogs so that's why I asked haha

It does seem to be really hard to find good blogs by Googling. You tend to find lots of rubbish.

10:32 AM
Yea

The best route is probably following links from other blogs.

The two blogs I am already reading I discovered them through the comments on my questions on stackexchange

@NovaliumCompany when I was your age I used to rectify mains (i.e. 340V or so) and use it to charge banks of capacitors that I got from old TVs.
Then shorting them produced some almighty explosions!

@JohnRennie Your parents allowed you to do that?

10:34 AM
But I hereby officially discourage you from doing that as it can also produce death :-)

I going off have a great day everyone, thanks for the help!

@TaeNyFan You're the nicest person in this chatroom.

@NovaliumCompany I didn't tell them :-)

@JohnRennie Bad boi :D

:-)

10:35 AM
If I was doing such things and my father found out, I'll be joining my ancestors.
I can't believe I've been in this chatroom for 2 years.
Time flies

My parents didn't know anything about electronics, so they would have had no idea what I was up to anyway.

@JohnRennie That reminds me, about the containers, I found out that I can simply use coin containers.
how didn't I thought of that
I ordered some that are 1.4cm diameter.

I have to say that I think your attempt to build a e-ink screen is probably doomed to failure, but I also think you'll discover lots of interesting stuff attempting to make it work.

@JohnRennie I've never said I'm making an e-ink screen ;)

The motion of the charged particles is known as electrophoresis, and that is an important technology in lots of applications of colloid science.

10:42 AM
It'll be very hard, but, I'll give my all.
Why do you think it's doomed to failure?

Because it involves lots of different things, all of which have to work, and all of which are quite tricky.

morgen

It may be very hard, but not impossible. And believe me, I'm not giving up until I don't see it working.
morgen
plus, it's the best learning experience I can ever get
@JohnRennie It bothers me a bit that you're sharing your identity on the internet.
I should have researched before buying the domain alastir.com :( Now I'm so annoyed that alastyr.com exists. Hopefully they don't mess us around, but I don't think they will since alastyr is a Turkish company.
I was thinking a name between Olstro, Avoala, Jellor and Anastir.
I asked people on discord and they voted Anastir.
But damn it, alastyr.com exists :(
Do you think they'll mess us up? I don't think they will because alastyr.com is entirely Turkish a no one besides Turkish people know about it.
It's so hard to come up with a good name these days ;((
That's not taken or similar.
What happened to @Blue :( He was a nice guy.
Did he disappear for no reason?

11:13 AM
@NovaliumCompany Blue got interested in quantum computing and spends all his time on that these days.

@JohnRennie Cool.
I just learned a lesson not to compulsively and emotionally take decisions, such as buying the domain anastir.com, where I forgot to check whether there are similar business names due to my excitement. RIP 15$.

2 hours later…
12:56 PM
@ACuriousMind Achtung

3 hours later…
3:32 PM
@NovaliumCompany well …

3:48 PM
@Slereah Jawohl?

@ACuriousMind Some paper suggests that invariance of the action is to be something of the form $$\int_{a}^{b} L(\phi(x)) dx = \int_{\Phi(a)}^{\Phi(b)} L(\Psi(\phi(\Phi^{-1}(x)))) dx$$
But due to Reasons, I would perhaps prefer it to be $$\int_{a}^{b} L(\phi(x)) dx = \int_{a}^{b} L(\Psi(\phi(x))) dx$$
Where $\Psi$ is some field automorphism that can also include diffeomorphisms
Are those two things equivalent or am I wrong

Well, if you have a transformation like a diffeomorphism you of course also have to transform the coordinates

Hm

Your latter equation is for vertical transformation sthat don't touch the coordinates

I suppose perhaps the generic way to write this would be $$S[\phi, \Omega] = S[\Phi(\phi), \phi(\Omega)]$$
With $\phi$ the diffeomorphism induced by the automorphism $\Phi$
Would that be it?

3:54 PM
You'd have to be careful what the space is the "volume" $\Omega$ lives in, but at least I'd say it's right in spirit

Alright

@Loong well?

Trying to work out that automorphism of the line bundle over R thing by hand to convince myself it's all correct

Jun 27 at 17:25, by ACuriousMind
@SirCumference cf. https://chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/74398?m=50424077#50424077
@RyanUnger Saw a "Metzgerei Unger" today - got relatives in the meat business? :P

as far as I can work out it's 1) preserve the manifold structure of $\mathbb{R}^2$ so it's a diffeomorphism 2) preserve the bundle structure so $\pi(x) = \pi(y) \to \pi(\Phi(x)) = \pi(\Phi(y))$ and 3) preserve the vector space structure so that $\Phi$ acts on the fiber like a linear transformation
Is that all I need to work it out

4:01 PM
It needs to be a linear automorphism, i.e. an invertible linear transformation, on every fiber

@ACuriousMind since the furniture stores no longer exist

So that it will be something like $\Phi(x,t) = (\alpha(x,t), \beta(x,t))$, but the other restrictions lead it to whatever

@Loong I think I'm too young to remember these ;)

From 2) that would be if $y_1 = (x_1, t)$ and $y_2 = (x_2, t)$, then $\beta(x_1, t) = \beta(x_2, t)$
And that is true for any $x$ in the fiber of $t$ and therefore $\beta(x,t) = \beta(t)$
And from 3) that would be that for $\Phi(x,t)$, the transformation along the fiber is a linear transformation so that $\alpha(x,t) = \Lambda(t) x$
Is that about correct?
and is that about general for most kinds of bundles
Vector ones anyway
(I know I am bad for not using transition functions but it's all trivial here)

4:26 PM
I should try to work it our for fields of arbitrary base manifold and vector bundles

4:39 PM
Does the condition 2) basically mean that the first part (locally) of the automorphism is always a diffeomorphism on the base manifold?
ie for some local trivialization, $$\Phi(p, v) = (\phi(p), \Lambda(p) \cdot v)$$
With $\Lambda : M \to \text{GL}(V)$

2 hours later…
6:29 PM
@ACuriousMind Shame he didn't come back after that :/

2 hours later…
8:26 PM
@ACuriousMind "not so nice activities on suspended account" - What did he do?

@NovaliumCompany As he didn't go into any more detail, it is not for us to do so.
