00:00 - 17:0017:00 - 00:00

5:04 PM
@ACuriousMind you can get food poisoning in the game

I can get food poisoning in real life if I want to
so what

@SirCumference At least both are mammals, so: Good work, model!
@RyanUnger I'm less a stickler for realism than you might think :P

Really realistic games can be fairly dull
Way too much boring micro management
Also there's a Thing that happens in "realistic" games which is like
1) you have to do activity X to stay alive
2) Time is extremely compressed usually
3) that means you have to do X way more than you'd do in real life
and usually X is dull
I don't want to have to make my character pee every 15 minutes

Just be happy most games don't include, erm, waste disposal :P

@ACuriousMind Some do!
ie
The Sims
Ark Survival Evolved
although it is very rare because it is very annoying
Oh Theme Hospital has it, too
and Rimworld I think?
I forget
Rimworld's pretty nice, although it is very much "Dwarf Fortress without the hassle"

5:08 PM
No, Rimword doesn't (it's very annoying with how quickly things get dirty, though)

@ACuriousMind which is very realistic
It is very annoying how quickly my appartment gets dirty

Yes, I agree. The problem is that reality sucks in a lot of ways!

Let's play very unrealistic games instead
Let's play... Antichamber
or something

@Slereah not in this one

@RyanUnger So how often do you have to pee

5:19 PM
what I don't understand is how my breastplate got damaged in a fist fight!

very strong fists

@Slereah you don't have to pee

prostate problem maybe

@ACuriousMind well I've been stealing food to stay alive
right now I'm carrying 15 onions

@RyanUnger are you an ogre

5:20 PM
gonna make onion soup

why when you could make chicken soup

probably couldn't defeat the chicken

I have made chicken soup from scratch a few times
It is quite alright but a bit of a hassle to make

vzn
5:51 PM
@RyanUnger it looks like really breakthru cutting edge research. it takes time for these kinds of results to be assimilated. dislike the aversion routinely expressed around here for breakthru work/ new results and think all the angst about popsci is a distraction (popsci is merely the 1st to report it). my interpretation is that its very strong evidence for the soliton nature of the electron, its basically a spinning soliton and this experiment nearly definitively proves it....

6:04 PM
@Slereah it's good for you

it is

@vzn Isn't the electron a spinning Mobius band?

I think there was some theory in like the 19th century or so that electrons were toruses
tori?
And that was supposed to explain discrete energy levels
Although I'm 90% sure it was one of those theories that was just a vague idea nobody ever developped
Kind of like the one electron universe theory

remember you know who
he said electrons are belts right

Hush
We must never speak his name!!!
a dark wizard is he

6:11 PM
he gave me this scar
4

I feel that the whole field of interpreting QM is a bit marred by people having actual stakes in the outcome
Like people seem to have real problem about QM being this or that

@ACuriousMind - Name an aspect of reality... I ran out of them to add with mods to Fallout 4. The only thing I don't have to do is get up and go to work.

@Mazura ACM hated F4
@Slereah just another reason to do only math

@RyanUnger Oh sure, math people never have philosophical quarrels

pretty much

6:23 PM
coughintuitionist logiccough

That's a tiny fringe minority
no one takes them seriously

The same is true for physics, tho

it's literally never come up in my work

Like I'm sure most physicists just do solid state stuff

idk string theory is just about the most interesting physics but also probably wrong
strange how that works
I'm not considering GR physics here

6:25 PM
Once in a while I meet "normal" physicists
and then I try to show them my area of interest
and they are like what is this shit

Words, with numbers in the way, apparently.

most physics people just do like calculus and linear algebra
and that's about it

When do you learn about stress tensors? And what level math do you need to understand them?

Stress tensor is in like continuum mechanics
Which is like... 3rd year or so?
At least at my uni
Usually stress tensors aren't terribly complicated
it's basically just matrix stuff

What's the equivalent of tensors in GR?

6:34 PM
What do you mean
GR uses tensors

crap
I need about another 4y of math...

6:58 PM
hello

2 hours later…
9:32 PM
@Slereah it's because you like those weird spacetimes!

10:01 PM
@dmckee perhaps, "unreasonably effective"? :-)

2 hours later…
11:56 PM
I thought y'all were just being uppity. Then I figured out why I haven't seen any green numbers all day... Who was it (and is that a question that can be ethically answered, or do I have to look for an (at) that betrays this information?)
