@StackExchange O_0
@David doesn't that^ hamper your event scheduling abilities
@Shog9 Alright, thanks :)
/me updates meta question

@Manishearth FYI: I'll be going through the sites being shut down this evening to determine what, if anything, remains to be done migration-wise, and updating my meta posts with that information. If there's no artifact on the site (meta post detailing migration progress, outstanding flags) indicating that something remains to be done, I will assume it does not.

@Shog9 Alright..
Oh, now I realized that today is May 4. RIP. :(

@Manishearth Fortunately, it's still May 3rd for me

@Shog9 half a day left then (a day since you said "evening") :)

12:54 AM
@Manishearth More or less. Expect mass-migrations to happen tomorrow morning (for me; between 15:00 and 18:00 UTC) with shutdowns following their completion.

@Shog9 Alrighty. Are you guys temptagging the Astro.SE and TP.SE questions as such?
(so that we can retag them, otherwise our already bloated tags list gets even more bloated)

@Manishearth I don't really have a good way to do that (unless one of the devs has something clever up his sleeve) - there'll be a complete list of auto-migrated questions posted on Physics' meta after the fact though.

@Shog9 Alright. Then we can just copy paste it to another metapost and remove them as we finish retagging. Sounds good :)

@Manishearth Yup

@Shog9 Aah, I see.

1:14 AM
@David looks like you mods can steal room ownership :P Feel free to do so :)

2:04 AM
@Manishearth oh, uh... well, apparently I wasn't a room owner before, so I guess I can still schedule events by virtue of my modship. So I don't think there's any reason to revoke room ownership from you.

2:38 AM
@DavidZaslavsky Alright :) Bans self from room

hehe, scientist at work :-)

1 hour later…
3:58 AM
@GraceNote Any reason why you're not here: stackexchange.com/about/team ?

4:17 AM
@Manishearth Search for "Chris Jaeger"
Given names only on that page. No "Shog9" either.

@Shog9 Aah, I was quite sure that "Grace Note" was a pseudonym, since it's a music term
Didn't know he was a guy though ;-P

Yup, though I don't know that that's the origin

A grace note is a kind of music notation used to denote several kinds of musical ornaments. When occurring by itself, a single grace note normally indicates the intention of either an appoggiatura or an acciaccatura. When they occur in groups, grace notes can be interpreted to indicate any of several different classes of ornamentation, depending on interpretation. Notation In notation a grace note is distinguished from a regular note by print size. A grace note is indicated by printing a note that is much smaller than a regular note, sometimes with a slash through the note stem (if two...

@Manishearth strictly-speaking, "Chris" can be used for either sex

@Shog9 Hmm, yeah..

4:20 AM
I was just glad it wasn't a reference to,
Gracenote, Inc., formerly called CDDB (Compact Disc Data Base), is a company that maintains and licenses an Internet-accessible database containing information about the contents of audio compact discs and vinyl records. It provides software and metadata to businesses that enable their customers to manage and search digital media. Gracenote provides its media management technology and global media database of digital entertainment information to the mobile, automobile, portable, home, and PC markets. Several computer software applications that are capable of playing CDs, such as Wina...

@Shog9 :P
@DavidZaslavsky physics.stackexchange.com/questions/24814/… Any idea how to deal with that?
We can't exactly tell him to split it into 8 questions, can we?

@Manishearth He already is...
Seems like the conscientious type

@Shog9 Aah, right.. though possibly the rest of the questions could be aksed in a nice way
I was thinking of merging the extremely similar ones into one question; then we will get about 3 total questions

Worth a try

Hi Robert, and welcome to Physics Stack Exchange! Manishearth is right, we prefer that you ask separate questions separately, so I'd say just let this post be about that one question. A little later, you can post the remaining questions, one by one. Also, anything that doesn't directly contribute to your question kind of gets in the way, so while it's not bad, your story is out of place here. I'd say remove that as well. You can pretty much condense it down to "Suppose I'm in a very fast spaceship that flies through the solar system and is deflected by the Sun's gravity." — David Zaslavsky 36 secs ago
Makes sense..
(though I usually hate the "ask,edit,add another question, bug answerers,repeat" cycle)

4:29 AM
@Manishearth well, we wind up with better questions that way.

@DavidZaslavsky Yep :)

in any case feel free to stay out of it if you get bored or anything

@DavidZaslavsky I'm editing the question and shortening it anyway..
I think I know the answer, but I'm not sure. Leave it to the experts :)

Sure... I was thinking about doing it myself but personally I usually prefer to have the OPs handle the edits (so they get to understand the procedure, and so that it's still in their words)
IMO there's nothing wrong with having 8 separate questions, if they're good questions
@Manishearth excellent edit :-)
(even the note about there being multiple questions at the end isn't really necessary, but I suppose it doesn't hurt)

@DavidZaslavsky Well, the 8 questions on their own would be "too localised"
@DavidZaslavsky Thanks :)

4:34 AM
Only some of them would be too localized.
That's why I made that comment about Robert trying to look up and apply some formulas

@DavidZaslavsky Well, it explains the comments (though I guess they'll go down the memory hole after some time)
@DavidZaslavsky Right.

Yeah, I'd consider deleting those comments after a short time

Yay I have wriggled into the faq!!! http://meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/130046/when-should-i-vote
;-)
Now everyone has to follow my voting guidelines!
/me adds bit about "always upvote Manishearth"

7:49 AM
;-)
I'm also really surprised that wasn't in the FAQ already... I'd assumed that all the FAQ posts dealing with existing features had already been written.

Surprised that there isn't a faq post on this. *shrug* — Manishearth Apr 23 at 1:08
Me too

Yeah, I saw that (hence my "also")

(oh, you already saw that :P)
Yeah, voting is a huge part of SE
while there shouldn't be rules, per se, some guidelines are good

4:06 PM
Well, you know meta ;-)
I may not be online later today when the migrations go down... if it matters

4:33 PM
@David don't think it does.... Though that reminds me, I have a meta(.phy) post to write.

5:21 PM
Write one big metapost.... check

Q: How should we go about retagging the salvaged posts?

ManishearthAlright. Today(-ish), Astro.SE and TP.SE shall be mass-migrated to Phy.SE. After the migration, we have retagging to consider--these questions will all be untagged. We shall be provided with a meta-post-list of the migrated questions. How should we retag? The issue with retagging is that it ...

6:46 PM
Heads-up: all 6 sites scheduled for shut down doing so within minutes, massive migration to Physics happening shortly thereafter.

6:57 PM
No countdown? :(
waits impatiently

Delays. Devs decide at last minute to change how sites are shut down. :|
Probably a good thing, in that we'll have a bit more breathing room to make sure we get the migrations right, but... Delays.

@shog how long then?

I... Don't know.
Between 5 seconds and two hours

Aah, six to eight weeks ;-)
What's the change?

@Manishearth Instead of trying to mass-migrate from a live site, we'll effectively be pulling access to everyone external first, and then migrating.

7:11 PM
Aah
Actually I was about to suggest so me thing si milar
Migrate first, then delete

Yeah, whole lot safer.
Apparently, waiting on a full build.
SE has become rather large.

'waiting on a full build' ? I didn't get that :/

@Manishearth everything. All of SE. Is being "built" - compiled, linked, deployed, etc.

Wait, why?
( I know what a build is, didn't get why you wanted to wait for one)

@Manishearth Apparently, this is necessary in order to have the ability to make a site unavailable without actually taking it down completely.
Not being a developer (at long last, sighs happily), I don't have to worry about why

7:16 PM
Or is there some 'read-only' mode for the sites being added (since all sites run on the same engine)

So I get to just complain about it ignorantly ;0)

Oh, I realised why :p

@Manishearth Pretty much. Not read-only though (that would break stuff). Rather, inaccessible to everyone but us.

You can't modify the code for just one site since each site runs on the same engine
@Shog aah, right (i'm surprised the feature wasn't built in.. Most webapps have an emergency shutdown.

@Manishearth Pretty much. There's a hierarchy, wherein we can do a build for just MSO and nothing else, but once it's needed on a real site, it needs to be everywhere.

7:19 PM
Yup. I read it recently.. digs meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/131333/…
MSO is used for mass-testing?

@Manishearth Well, that is available. As is read-only, although to my knowledge it's never used and probably doesn't work for anything other than an emergency fill-in.
@Manishearth Yup.

Aah. Of course, you could just take the whole network offline for a while and be done with it :P
Easier I guess..

7:37 PM
It's getting late, better turn in.
Nice chatting with you!

8:15 PM
What ?! The sites will be made unavailable for everybody without stuff being migratede here ? WTF is going on ?! I thought (most of)the questions and answers should Astro and TP should find a save home as previously discussed ...:-(

Migrations are happening RIGHT NOW
Watching for incoming Astronomy posts
@Dilaton We have to pull data dumps first, else... Well, they'd be pretty empty.

@Shog9 Ah ok, thanks for the clarification ...

8:32 PM
WATCH 'EM ROLL IN!
real-time updates make this sorta fun

8:43 PM
TP -> Physics migrations in progress

Yeah, watching them coming is awsome :-D

Q: The main page acting strange and inconsistently

M.Na'elRight now (May 4th '12 20:58 UTC), the main page either remains as I first open it to continues to 'update' with tens of questions each second coming to the top of the list. Once I refresh, it's gone and everything is back to how it was when I first opened it; a minute later and the same behavior...

Darn, I just wanted to delete [this ](physics.stackexchange.com/questions/13252/…) question together with its pseudoanswer I accepted because it is now a dublicat of that one which I want to keep because it has a real and nice answer from Lumo.
But I`m not able to delete the pseudo answer of the first question because I have accepted it, so I can not delete the first question itself either ...

10:03 PM
@Dilaton: Cant you unaccept the answer?
Through the migration, I gained reputation but lost most of my badges, as apparently the user accounts of physics and theoreticalPhysics were somehow but inconsistently merged.
No, sorry, that was on meta -- on physics everything is ok.

10:38 PM
Thanks @ArnoldNeumaier, I forgot that I can unaccept it. Now it is sheduled for deletion and I`ll hopefully keep the right member from the "doublet" :-) It was the only question I succesfully managed to crosspost.
Ha ha, now I`ve earned the "disciplined" badge :-D ...
